The Dutch division of the ISSMGE (KIVI NIRIA) and the Organising Committee have the pleasure of inviting you to Rotterdam, the Netherlands for the 21st European Young Geotechnical Engineers Conference, which will be held:

SEPTEMBER 4TH – 7TH , 2011 CONFERENCE CITY The 21st European Young Geotechnical Engineers Conference will be held in the heart of Rotterdam. ‘Manhattan on the Maas’ has an impressive skyline which can be seen from afar, enhancing the city’s imposing appearance. A city of great architecture spreading the Maas river, it features beautiful bridges, Europe’s largest harbour and impressive constructions. The RDM campus is situated in Heijplaat, centrally located in the City Ports area of Rotterdam, easily accessible with transportation to the city centre by fast ferry Aqualiner; This historical industrial location was once a shipyard and buildings of the 'Rotterdamsche Droogdok Maatschappij' (Rotterdam Dry Dock Company). HOW TO GET TO ROTTERDAM Rotterdam is easily accessible by plane, train, bus or car. Both the accommodation and the conference venues are in the city centre and easily reached from Rotterdam Central Railway Station using the underground or local trains.

By plane Flights are available from several European airports to Rotterdam Airport. Alternatives, like Amsterdam “Schiphol” Airport and Eindhoven Airport have good train connections (1 - 2 hours) to Rotterdam By train Rotterdam Central Station is part of the High Speed Rail Line from Amsterdam to Paris and Southern France. In addition all local trains and long distance trains stop at Rotterdam Central Station. By bus Eurolines offers low cost bus services connecting Rotterdam to 500 European destinations (www.eurolines.com). By car The accommodation is accessible by car with paid parking garages. TRANSPORTATION IN ROTTERDAM The accommodation is in the city centre of Rotterdam. Most places of interest are on walking distance. How to get from Rotterdam Central Station to the Maritime Hotel by public transport Due to an annual event in Rotterdam on the day of arrival (Rotterdam World Port Days) no bus or taxi services will be available on September 4. We recommend using the tram system from Rotterdam Central Station to the hotel: - Tram no. 7 (direction Willemsplein / Nesserdijk) and get off at Willemskade - Tram no. 20 (direction Lombardijen), get off at Vasteland and walk to Willemskade - Tram no. 25 (direction Carnisselande), get off at Metrostation Leuvehaven and walk to

Willemskade Participants can be dropped of at Rotterdam Central Station on the last day of the conference (Wednesday). How to get from the Maritime Hotel to the RDM Campus By aqualiner (ferry) from the Willemskade to Heijplaatstraat (± 20 minutes). Transport from and to the RDM campus on Monday and Tuesday will be arranged by the organising committee.

PROGRAMME OF EYGEC 2011 Keynote speakers Four experienced geotechnical engineers and ISSMGE representatives have been invited to EYGEC 2011. These keynote speakers will also be actively involved in the main presentation and discussion sessions. The following keynote speakers will attend the EYGEC 2011 conference:

16:30 : Depart from hotel to Rotterdam central station Maasvlakte 2 Harbour Expansion Directly to the west of the current port and industrial area of Rotterdam a new top European location for port activities and industry is to be created in the North Sea. Maasvlakte 2 will shortly cover 1000 hectares of new land for industrial sites, located directly on deep water. The reclaimed land will emerge after the construction of a combination of hard and soft sea defences in the North Sea. Beach and dunes form the soft part of the sea defence, rubble or concrete blocks the hard sea wall. Inside these defences, the sites will subsequently be sprayed on. The sand for this will come from carefully selected locations at sea, but will also become available when the port itself is deepened. The land reclamation will measure around 2000 hectares in total. Half of this will consist of infrastructure, such as sea defences, fairways, railways, roads and port basins. The other 1000 hectares will provide the space for industrial sites. Railway tunnel Delft The Delft Railway tunnel including access ramps spans 2300 m through the historical city centre of Delft. The central part includes two tunnel tubes constructed simultaneously while the current tracks are maintained at the surface. Completion of the first tunnel tube will allow removal of the existing tracks on an elevated overpass which currently divides the city in two. Construction works include a building pit within diaphragm walls which act as deep foundations for the overlying city hall, and jacking a historical windmill up onto a new foundation. Conference fee The conference fee is € 300. For additional delegates a fee is applicable of € 600. The fee will cover participation at the Conference, Conference proceedings, accommodation in the Maritime Hotel (3 nights from Sunday to Wednesday morning), meals from Monday morning breakfast to Wednesday afternoon lunch, transportation from accommodation to conference venue and excursions.
