What I is a Geotechnical Engineers?

A geotechnical engineer studies different kinds of soil like

bedrock, clay, sand, and top soil. If your wondering

why they study this it's because before people build a house or a building they need to know if the ground is good for the house or

for the building.

Were making a model of how it happens.

When we shake our model sometimes it falls

and sometimes it doesn't fall and this is the same in real life

because sometimes the building doesn't fall and

sometimes it does.

It was not a real earthquake because we did it with our hands.

It's different from a real earthquake because we

can't make a earthquake happen when we want it

to. We don't make the

building fall, it falls on its own.

How a model of an earthquake is same or different in real life

Same Different

Which layer of soil is good for earthquakes?

• Top soil was not the best because we found out that earthquakes affect the top soil more than it does to the other soils and it affects the Top soil more because its on the top. When we shook our model with the top soil, the building fell over fast.

• Sand was a little better than top soil because when we shook it, the building didn't fall as fast.

• Clay was the best layer because the deeper the pier foundations go the more stable it gets and it was a while before the building fell. So clay is a good soil to use if your using these soils, pick clay.

Advantage and Disadvantage of bedrock

Advantage Disadvantage

Structure is not damaged

More stable in bedrock

The bedrock helps the buildings from not

falling over in a earthquakes

Long time to dig

A lot of money

Hard to repair

If the earthquake is

too strong it can knock the

building down

In this model there is no bedrock

We take a core sample to study the layers. You can see our topsoil easily, but you can't see the sand and the clay very well but they are there.
