Why studywith us?New College Swindon has delivered degree-level higher education successfully for a number of years. And there have been a number of long-standing partnerships between us and universities to provide high quality programmes.

These partnerships, many of which have been built up over a number of years, provide critical resources and services for students, and deliver outstanding results for local economies and local employers. It is important to stress that all higher education courses face the same rigorous checks and audits.

While the end result – a degree (hopefully!) – will be the same from either type of institution, the experience you’ll have getting there will very different.

• Our College will have smaller sites than many Universities which can often spread across multiple campuses, so easier to find your way around!

• The student populations at New College Swindon will include anyone from 19 – 60, and rising, so there is a very diverse mix of students, so will put you at ease if you are planning to come back into education.

• Our College offers a range of higher education qualifications: foundation and undergraduate degrees, Higher National Certificates and Diplomas, part-time professional Certificates and Diplomas and teacher training for the learning and skills sector, and not just Undergraduates and Postgraduate degrees and Doctorates.

• Our tutors teaching degree courses will certainly know their stuff and how to deliver it, in the same way you’d expect from a tutor at a university. Chances are some will lecture and teach across both types of institution.

• There may be a difference in the classroom atmosphere. Some students feel it’s more relaxed and intimate in an FE setting, and there are smaller class sizes – meaning you will get more opportunity to ask questions and get involved in open discussions.

• Studying at our College you can be living at home and studying nearby. You can also still mix with your circle of friends and keep a part-time job. To some students it is not always about partying and having a good time, it is about study and your family. It is about fitting in with your lifestyle and home commitments, and saving money on living expenses, competitive fees and accommodation.

• Our College will have the same classrooms and workshops as a University but as a franchise college student, you will also be able to access university facilities as well.

• Similarly, careers and student advisers will be in evidence at franchised colleges like us.

• If you have completed a Level 3 course at New College Swindon, as we have Higher Education provision on campus, this will give you continuity and offer you a supportive learning environment you are already familiar with to progress your career.

CostsHigher EducationWe are the largest provider of Higher Education in Swindon, with higher level courses in a wide variety of subject areas. More students are seeing the benefits of studying at a local college that fits in with their work and family commitments, without the worry about long commutes or the cost of living away from home.

As well as more affordable fees, you could benefit from smaller class sizes, for more one-on-one time with tutors. We aim to create a supportive environment where you feel relaxed and comfortable with your fellow students. We have a Learning Development Centre available to all students, where you can benefit from knowledgeable staff who can help with researching and referencing, borrow from a diverse selection of books and magazines, use the computers and have space to work.

Our HE Students have access to a separate HE Student Centre with your own exclusive facilities for personal study. As part of your experience here, we value your feedback and have regular Student Voice meetings where you can raise any concerns or give positive feedback.

Whichever course you choose you’re guaranteed specialist HE study support, tutorials and a dedicated HE team to help you every step of the way.

All of our programmes are designed with employment in mind and our lecturers have a huge bank of professional experience. They know exactly how the skills and knowledge they teach transfer into the real world. On successful completion of your course, you’ll have the opportunity to take part in our Graduation Ceremony, which usually takes place in early Autumn.

Now is the time to get your qualifications, so you can improve your job prospects. Plan now for a more interesting future and higher earning potential. Higher Education is open to students usually aged 18 and over, and many of our courses have options for studying full-time and part-time, which may mean that you can fit them in around your current employment.

Dealing with the Cost of Higher Education

Our fees are highly competitive anyway. However, when you factor in that you can combine working with study and you can stay at home too, the cost of studying locally reduces massively compared with going away to University.

Getting Help with Living Costs

You can apply for a maintenance loan to help with your living costs whilst studying Higher Education courses. Maintenance loans are available even if you are living at home with your parents, depending on household income.

Advantages of a Student Loan

The key difference between a student loan and any other loan is that what you pay back is based on your earnings rather than what you have borrowed. At the moment you pay back nothing at all if you are earning under £25000 a year.

Once you earn above £25000 a year you pay 9% of the difference between your salary and £25000. e.g. if you earn £35000 you will re-pay 9% of £10000 = £900 per year, taken monthly from your salary. If you are concerned that paying back a student loan might be too expensive for you, it might help to know that, regardless of the sum you borrow, your repayments are fixed to 9% of the difference between your salary and the £25000 threshold. Payment terms can change at any time.

Make sure you fully explore what they are at the time you take out the loan. We can help you apply for your student loan at thecollege. It is up to you though to make sure you fully explore the implications of taking out a student loan before doing so.

Whether it is right for you will depend on many factors. All of our course fees arepublished in the Higher Education section on our website.

4. Receive your Study Aid and Study Strategies Report. You will be sent a report which identifies the equipment and other support you will need, how much it will cost and where to get it from.

5. Find out what the DSA can pay for. Qualifications Explained

Entry Requirements

Higher Nationals (HNC/HND) - are Level 4 and 5 qualifications, recognised as the equivalent to the first two years of a Bachelor’s Degree (BA). They are work related courses with an emphasis on ‘learning by doing’; focusing on the skills and knowledge needed for a particular industry. Assessment is by projects, presentations and practical tasks rather than traditional exams. An HND can lead directly to a career, or can be extended via a top-up course into a full Bachelor’s Degree (BA).

Foundation Degrees - are equivalent to the first two years of a Bachelor’s Degree. They offer a combination of academic study and workplace skills relevant to a specific job or profession. Ideal if you’re looking to formalise your workplace knowledge with a qualification and open up your progression opportunities. On completion, you can apply the skills you’ve learnt directly in a work environment. Alternatively, you may choose to complete a top-up year in order to gain the full Bachelor’sDegree (BA). Zenon Rejek had a natural born talent for problem-solving, applying his strategic brain to both his GCSE Maths study and video games!

His brother was already studying AAT at the college and encouraged him to enrol on the same course to put his numeracy skills to good use.

Prior to joining, Zenon had already passed his Level 2 before hitting a brick wall at Level 3. “I decided to re-sit the year and study Level 3 here at the college. My tutor encouraged me to do more self-study. I passed every exam first time with the help and guidance of my tutor.”

Past experiences taught Zenon to be resilient in the face of adversity. Now, his advice to others remains the same. As exams get progressively harder through the levels, he recommends regular self-study beforehand, asking as many questions as possible and having a clear understanding before sitting your exam to help you achieve the best grade possible.

Sophie Pook, recognised the pressures of GCSEs, combined with learning difficulties and a troubled home life all contributed to her finishing school with few qualifications.

Despite these obstacles, Sophie followed her passion for Photography, which led her to visiting Swindon College. She was blown away by how accommodating tutors and staff were.

With no previous artistic talent to speak of, Sophie proved doubters wrong by studying an HND in Photography, having already passed Levels 2 and 3 in Art and Design. Whilst her HND isn’t specifically photography based, the lecturers have tailored Sophie’s learning to allow her to develop the specialist skills she needs.

She plans to pursue a B.A. in Photography after her HND. Sophie eventually wants to fulfil a lifelong dream of teaching Photography – an opportunity she herself never had growing up but one that she wants to offer to other young people.

“I struggled in secondary school so was always placed in the lower sets. Whilst I haven’t been officially diagnosed, the college picked up on my dyslexia. It has simply made me more determined to be successful!

Chris Taylor has always been interested in Art but, after finishing school, he decided to put University on hold to weigh up his options.

It wasn’t until age 22, that he realised his passion for Graphic Design, and began an HND in Graphic Design whilst living in Dublin - his first foray into the world of creative communication. This inspired him to fulfil his potential to work in the creative communication industry. Chris made Oxford Brookes his first choice and enrolled onto a BA (Hons) in Graphic Design based at Swindon College.

“I was impressed with the smaller class sizes, one-to-one opportunities, live job experiences and the passion and enthusiasm of the tutors showing me around, explaining about the course and the facilities. They treated me as a valued individual.”

In Chris’ first year he helped with re-branding a local primary school, and also worked with the National Trust. In his second year he was given the opportunity to apply for a role as a Junior Graphic Designer at Swindon College and was hired by the Marketing Team!

“During the course I’ve worked on live

projects with real clients. When I look back at

where I started, I feel I wouldn’t have had the same opportunities or

experiences elsewhere.”

Kara Gelston is a Health Care Assistant in a GP practice. She had seen the course on the website and was prompted to follow up her interest by the Course Tutor.

She says the tutors are really supportive and, after completing the course, she wants to go on to do a nursing degree. This pathway will allow her the opportunity to go straight to year 2 of a nursing degree with Oxford Brookes.Kara says time management has been key to her success in fitting everything in, as she juggles family life with work.

She has a very supportive husband andan employer who is keen for her to succeed. She found that having a calendar of hand-in dates for assignments has been very helpful.

Kara recommends the College because the whole process of joining was made really easy.

Public Services(Crime andCriminal Justice) Steph Small left school pondering her

options. Thankfully, the breadth of courses available at New College made it easy to trial different subjects whilst keeping an open mind.

It was the more hands-on approach of the HNC in Public Services that suited Steph. She enjoyed all the exciting field trips organised by the Course Leaders:

“It was a great opportunity to develop skills with adventurous activities that I really wouldn’t have thought about pursuing in my own time. The course itself opens doors, not only to the Public Service sectors, but other avenues such as national security, government and international relations.”

Her course has seen her involved in a number of vocational activities ranging from being Team Leader in a Royal Marines Challenge to Police Training drills for new recruits. She now wants to do a top-up year at University or College to achieve a full Honours in Public Services or Criminology.

Students’ Consumer Rights

As an undergraduate student, you have consumer rights which have been set out by the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA).

The CMA guidance covers three areas of consumer law as they relate to students:

• Information provision – Universities and Higher Education providers must provide up front, clear, intelligible, unambiguous and timely information.

• Terms and conditions – terms and conditions that apply to students need to be fair and balanced.

• Complaint handling processes and practices – providers need to ensure their complaint handling processes and practices are accessible, clear and fair to students.

The CMA have published two pieces of guidance for undergraduate students which explain what students can expect from their University or Higher Education provider and what to do if things go wrong. Please visit:
