PGPULSEJuly 2021

It has been widely publicized that Utah is currently suffering through a severe drought. This is affecting the water resources of Pleasant Grove City. Effective immediately, PG City is imposing new water restrictions.

If water resources our used at the current pace the secondary water system will be out of water by mid-September. If everyone does their part we will have enough water to last through the irrigation season.

This might mean that your normally green lawn might have more of a yellow or brown look. Don’t worry, grass is resilient and will bounce back next year. Let’s get through this year and hope for a more wet winter.

We are asking that you reduce your watering time in one of two ways:

Option 1- Reduce your water by 30%. For example, if you are currently watering for 20 minutes, change it to 14 minutes.

Option 2- Keep the same watering times, but only water twice a week. Odd House Number days: Monday and Friday Even House Number days: Tuesday and Sunday

Please adjust your sprinkler heads to avoid overspray. Delay new sod or see installation if possible to next spring and when possible, avoid watering in the heat of the day or during wintry conditions.

The City will be watching for those wasting water through our enforcement program.

Thanks for your understanding and compliance.

City Beautification June’s Beautification Award Winners

Congratulations to the winners of this month’s beautification awards!  We encourage you to be on the lookout for our green and white signs in

the following neighborhoods:

The Beautification Commission members are still on the lookout for evidence of residents’ hard work in developing and maintaining lovely, creative yards & landscapes. If you have a neighbor you like to recommend, submit via our website athttps://www.plgrove.org/beautiful/be-a-winner/nominate-a-home.html.The criteria will be different this year due to the drought. Don’t be surprised if awards are given to yards that have yellow grass. It is evidenced they are doing their part to conserve water. The next garden workshop is in September. Sign up to participate via Zoom on

our website at https://www.plgrove.org/beautiful/yards-gardens/. The next three planned workshop are:

• September 15th- Harvesting and Storing Your Bounty• October 20th - Putting Yards and Gardens to Bed for The Winter

Being “water wise” means conserving water as an individual, family, and community.      Here are 3 examples of our “water wise” tips for more healthy garden:

• Use Mulch: It prevents water evaporation and is a natural weed preventer.

• Use Trigger Sprayers:  It makes hand watering easier and saves water.• Use Compost: It decreases water usage for both clay and sandy soil

types which improves absorption and retention.

BBQ Safety from the Fire Department

· July is the peak month for grill fires at 17 percent.

· Gas grills contribute to a higher number of home fires overall than their charcoal counterparts.

Safety 1ps for grilling include:

• Propane and charcoal BBQ grills should only be used outdoors.

• The grill should be placed well away from the home, deck railings and out from under eaves and overhanging branches.

• Keep children and pets at least three feet away from the grill area.

• Keep your grill clean by removing grease or fat buildup from the grills and in trays below the grill.

• Never leave your grill unaBended.

• Always make sure your gas grill lid is open before ligh1ng it.

As for charcoal grills, there are several ways to get the charcoal ready to use. Charcoal chimney starters allow you to start the charcoal using newspaper as a fuel.

If you use a starter fluid, use only charcoal starter fluid. Never add charcoal fluid or any other flammable liquids to the fire. Keep charcoal fluid out of the reach of children and away from heat sources.

There are also electric charcoal starters, which do not use fire. Be sure to use an extension cord for outdoor use.

When you are finished grilling, let the coals completely cool before disposing in a metal container.

When using a propane grill, check the gas tank hose for leaks before using it for the first 1me each year. Apply a light soap and water solu1on to the hose. A propane leak will release bubbles. If your grill has a gas leak, by smell or the soapy bubble test, and there is no flame, turn off both the gas tank and the grill. If the leak stops, get the grill serviced by a professional before using it again. If the leak does not stop, call the fire department. If you smell gas while cooking, immediately get away from the grill and call the fire department. Do not move the grill. If the flame goes out, turn the grill and gas off and wait at least five minutes before re-ligh1ng it.

• Keep your grill clean by removing grease or fat buildup from the grills and in trays below the grill.

• Never leave your grill unaBended.

• Always make sure your gas grill lid is open before ligh1ng it.

We hope these 1ps help keep us keep a fire-safe community.
