At Mountain Ash Comprehensive School we offer a broad and balanced curriculum which enables our pupils to develop their full potential academically, personally and socially. We are committed to providing high quality teaching and learning experiences which challenge our learners to be the best that they can be. As a Champion School for Accelerated Reader we place great emphasis on improving reading skills, encourage our children to read for pleasure and focus intensively on ensuring that literacy and numeracy skills are secure. Our excellent sporting and performing arts spaces provide our pupils with opportunities to work as part of a team and develop their confidence and performance skills, both of which are important life-skills. A wealth of extra-curricular activities are on offer, including the opportunity to participate in competitions, team sports and visit exciting destinations around the world, from Spain to the USA. Mountain Ash Comprehensive School is a happy and caring school. As the first secondary school in RCT to achieve Level 1 as a Rights Respecting School, we have a strong family and community ethos. We believe that happy, healthy and well supported children learn best and we work hard to develop partnerships between school and home. Our school motto “Every Child will Succeed” is fulfilled by ensuring that each and every child is given the right support in order to be successful. More Able and Talented learners gain support from enrichment opportunities and initiatives such as the Brilliant Club, whilst others may need additional support and targeted interventions to improve their basic skills. Every child is individual and we strive to meet each child’s needs in all that we do. We want our pupils to become ethical, informed learners and there are many ways in which your child can participate in the life of the school. Our Senedd enables pupils to influence policies and procedures and contribute to school developments and improvements. Please visit the school website at www.macs.uk.net to find out more about the day to day life of our school. At Mountain Ash Comprehensive School we try to ease the transition from primary to secondary school as far as possible through our excellent transition programme of visits, activities and curriculum experiences. Our recipe for success is working together with our valued primary partners, parents and pupils to ensure a smooth transition. There clearly is no better time to join us here at Mountain Ash Comprehensive School! Mrs Samantha Evans

Location

Mountain Ash Comprehensive is a mixed 11-18 school of around 1000 pupils. Our sixth form is part of the very successful Cynon Valley Consortium with Aberdare Community School and St.John Baptist High School, Aberdare. The school is located adjacent to the main road through the Cynon Valley and is situated on an extensive green field site on the outskirts of Mountain Ash. History The School was opened in 1991 in purpose built accommodation. It is at the edge of a traditional valleys town and is fortunate to enjoy a large and attractive campus. The school serves a community which has seen major changes from traditional industries such as mining and manufacturing to more technological industries and small businesses. Transition The number of pupils admitted to Year 7 is rising with approximately 200 pupils joining the school annually. Pupils are drawn from the following schools: Abercynon, Caegarw, Glenboi, Miskin, Pengeulan, Penrhiwceiber, Perthcelyn, Trelewis and Ynysboeth. There is a comprehensive transition programme and pupils transferring to us visit the school frequently from Year 5 during the academic year preceding their entry. This enables the pupils to familiarise themselves with the school and take an active part in a wide range of activities.

Organisation of the school curriculum

The school’s curriculum is organised to provide pupils with a broad and balanced education which is sufficiently differentiated to enable all pupils to maximise their potential whatever their ability. Excellent links exist between the school and its cluster primaries which enables pupils to settle quickly. Pupils are organised into two broad bands, X and Y, but the organisation of these bands may vary according to the needs and size of each cohort. In Year 7 pupils are taught in mixed ability classes whilst in Year 8 they are set within the bands. At the end of Key Stage 3, pupils are assessed formally in all National Curriculum subjects. Pupils choose their KS4 options at the end of Year 8 and pupils begin studying these subjects in Year 9. At KS4, pupils may be set for some core subjects. In Year 9, pupils are also taught Equality & Di-versity and Financial Capability which contribute to their average points scores at the end of KS4. Pupils are taught by suitably qualified and committed staff in one hour lessons through a timetable which extends over a fortnightly cycle. On average, pupils all year groups receive approximately 6 les-sons of Science and 7 or 8 lessons of English and Mathematics over a fortnightly timetable cycle whilst the number of lessons taught in other subject areas varies. Pupils also have one hour per fortnight with their form tutors to focus on skills development and pastoral issues. Pupils who have additional learning needs and maybe placed in small groups and many also receive timetabled intervention to focus on literacy and numeracy.

Organisation of the school curriculum

Years 9, 10 and 11 (Key Stage 4) At Key Stage 4, the vast majority of pupils follow G.C.S.E courses and some vocational courses. All pupils take the compulsory core of English, Maths, Welsh, Science, RE, PE and the Skills Challenge Certificate which is part of the Welsh Baccalaureate Other subjects are chosen from a broad range of optional subjects, as in the example below. This table changes annually to take account of pupil choices or curriculum need. A small number of pupils follow an alternative curriculum which is supplemented by enrichment activities and an external work placement. At the end of Year 11 pupils are entered for public examinations. Some Year 10 pupils may also be entered for public examinations in selected subjects.

Basic Equipment It is essential that pupils bring the correct equipment to school to be fully prepared for learning. They will need a school bag, an inexpensive pen, a ruler, a pencil, a pair of compasses, coloured pencils, a scientific calculator (which can be purchased from the Maths Faculty in school).

UNIFORM AND EQUIPMENT WILL BE SUBJECT TO REGULAR CHECKS AND ANY INAPPROPRIATE ITEMS OF CLOTHING, JEWELLERY, MOBILE PHONES, HEADPHONES OR SPEAKERS WILL BE CONFISCATED. PARENTS WILL BE CONTACTED TO RECLAIM THESE

Attendance

Regular attendance to school is extremely important and all pupils should aim for 100% at-tendance over the course of the year. Research shows that students who have a high level of attendance achieve more. Within school pupils are marked into each lesson electronically and in this way we assure ourselves to the best of our ability that pupils are present in all lessons. We also have a range of rewards in school to encourage good attendance. The school is supported by the Attendance and Welfare Officer who also supports us in en-suring that pupils attend regularly and who works closely with parents and carers. Pupils whose attendance falls below Welsh Government guidelines or who are constantly late may face penalty notices and fines. At Mountain Ash Comprehensive we have created an attendance zone system and pupils are informed weekly of their current attendance and which zone they are in. Our target for every pupil is to be in the silver or gold zones. Letters will be sent to parents every half term with this information.

Page 13: 2020/21 - Mountain Ash Comprehensive School

Holiday Requests

The Education Act (2000) sets out the Welsh Government ’s expectations regarding attendance. Leave of absence during term time is actively discouraged as it negatively impacts on the pupil’s ability to engage with the full curriculum. Parents and carers must apply in advance for permission for their child to have leave of absence during term time. The head teacher will consider the request and respond in writing within 5 school days to inform the parent or carer whether the request has been authorised. Attendance is an integral part of our rewards system. Pupils are regularly praised and recognised for having excellent attendance. For example we run 12 days of Christmas and Eggcellent attendance ini-tiatives at key points in the school year.

Complaints Procedure Mountain Ash Comprehensive School has a strong partnership ethos with all our parents. We endeavour to provide a good quality education for all our pupils. We strive to maintain excellent relationships and communication with parents at all times . Partnership is the key to successful education at Mountain Ash. We would always encourage parents to discuss concerns with school to try to resolve issues informally before pursuing a formal complaint. However, we realise that from time to time the school may not be able to fully meet the expectations of every parent. In situations such as these, parents will rightfully expect a means by which they can express their concern or complaint. The following COMPLAINTS PROCEDURE provides the vehicle for this to happen: When a parent wishes to make a complaint about any aspect of the work of the school, the complaint should initially be made in writing to the Headteacher. The Headteacher will then contact the parent, by telephone or give a written response within 5 working days, to explain the nature of the action being taken by the school. A meeting may then follow between the parent and the Headteacher, or her elected representative, in order to resolve the problem. If, after this meeting, the parent still does not feel a satisfactory outcome has been achieved he/she can then write to the Chair of Governors (Cllr P Jarman) who will raise the concerns at the next full Governing Body Meeting. Complaints, which cannot be resolved by the Governing Body, should then follow the agreed Complaints procedure.

Pastoral Organisation Our pastoral system is organised into Lower, Middle and Upper School. Each pupil is assigned to a Form Group on entry to the school. Each School is led by a Head of School who has responsibility for monitoring the academic progress and pastoral care of each year group. The Head of School is the direct contact for pupils within the school and for parents. Additionally, we have designated Pastoral Support assistants who work closely with pupils and their families and ensure that there is good communication between school and home. Each pupil is also part of a House system; the houses are Cynon, Golwg, Pennar and Taf. Pupils can earn points for the House in a range of curriculum areas and through extra-curricular activities and competitions, including our annual Eisteddfod. All school activities are positively reinforced by an effective Reward System, where pupils are given Achievement Points for attendance, achievement and a positive attitude to learning. Rewards are also given for involvement in the school community and being helpful and kind to others.

Class Charts We use Class Charts to record positive behaviour and achievement points and as a means of communication with parents. Pupils are able to exchange points earned in the School Shop.

Parental Appointments

Parents are always welcome at Mountain Ash Comprehensive, since a child’s education is a partnership between home and school. We will do our utmost to deal with your requests whenever we can. However, in a very large and busy school, we may not be able to deal with your request immediately. Parents who telephone the school about their child will have their call returned as soon as possible, ideally on the same day, by the most appropriate person to deal with the enquiry. However, this is not always possible due to teaching commitments. We ask parents to telephone the school to arrange a meeting with a member of staff, rather than turn up at the school without prior warning. An appointment can then be made at a mutually convenient time. On arrival at school, parents are asked to report to the reception area in the main foyer, where the Receptionist will be able to contact the person you are meeting. Parents are also asked, kindly, to sign in on entering the school, and then sign out on leaving, so that they are fully protected in the event of a fire. Parents can also arrange ,by prior notice, to have details of all school policies, procedures, guidelines etc. made available to them at the reception area. These are also available on the school website.

Welsh Language Policy

Welsh language teaching is a key subject for all pupils from 11-16. The delivery of ‘Y Cwricwlwm Cymreig’ and the promotion of the Welsh Language through Bilingualism, is monitored regularly. Correspondence in Welsh will generate a reply at least partially in Welsh. Bilingual signs are used inside and outside the building. The school makes use of every opportunity to promote the use of the Welsh Language and to foster a pride in being Welsh. Mountain Ash Comprehensive School is proud of the extent to which we celebrate the annual Eisteddfod; each year a full day of competitions and celebration is held in school.

Teaching and Learning

Teaching staff at Mountain Ash Comprehensive School are highly qualified and well trained specialists in their subject areas. A number of teachers are GCSE and A Level examiners for examination boards, or moderators in other schools. Excellence in Teaching and Learning, and the development of our teaching staff, is a key priority and has a prominent place on the school’s agenda. Within school we focus on six key principles that underpin our approach to planning lessons and in the training of staff:

Challenge and Engagement - So that pupils have high expectations of what they can achieve, and content is made relevant.

Explanation - So that pupils acquire new knowledge and skills through delivery.

Modelling - So that pupils know how to apply knowledge and skills and be successful.

Deliberate Practice – So that pupils have the opportunity to practise and rehearse what they have learned, and can identify gaps in their knowledge.

Questioning and Assessment - So that pupils are made to think hard with breadth, depth and accuracy and can apply what they have learned.

Feedback - So that pupils think about and further develop their knowledge and skills.

Our Policy on Home Learning We believe that homework and home learning is a very important dimension of a child’s education in secondary school, since it allows the learning in lessons to be consolidated at home. Opportunities to rehearse what has been learned at home is also vitally important for future success. It also provides a vehicle for you ,as parents, to become involved in your child’s learning and to provide support and guidance. The main purposes of this form of independent study are: to complete, consolidate and extend work already started with teachers in class

to encourage an enthusiasm for independent learning to develop a disciplined approach to work habits and a respect for deadlines

Supporting the More Able and Talented

At Mountain Ash Comprehensive School pupils are grouped to allow them to attain their full potential. The school runs an enrichment programme and subject leaders work with the MAT Co-ordinator to identify More Able and Talented pupils (MAT) across all year groups. These pupils benefit from opportunities to enrich their learning through competitions, such as the Young Presenters competition and masterclasses, such as The Brilliant Club, where pupils work on projects with universities across England and Wales. Pupils are also encouraged to apply to become active citizens who take full part in the life of the school. We have a very active Senedd (Student Council) and have had pupil representatives on the Youth Parliament for RCT. The school works with the Seren Hub programme to support pupils in KS5 to develop appropriate learning pathways, either academic or vocational.

Within these sessions, pupil’s cover the PSE Framework and aspects of the New Curriculum. There is an acknowledgement that pupils are experiencing changes, with transition into Secondary School alongside the challenges of adolescence. Within the Teaching & Learning programme, we equip pupils with the skills that will enable them to have greater self-assurance and tolerance as they become global citizens. Pupils look at Positive Mental Health in Year 7, Global Citizenship in Year 8, Moral and Ethical Issues Year 9, Career Paths & Future Plans in Year 10 and Relationships in Year 11. The school offers the Welsh Baccalaureate Qualification (WBQ) in Key Stages 4 & 5. Our Learning Core is focused on facilitating success with the WBQ.

School Visits - Charging

Throughout their time at Mountain Ash Comprehensive School pupils will have the opportunity to participate in an extensive programme of educational visits linked to different areas of the curriculum. We are not allowed to charge directly for these activities but may request a voluntary contribution. Parents experiencing difficulty in meeting costs are always welcome to contact the school. Should you require any further information please ask for a copy of our Charging Policy.

Security All visitors and contractors are expected to report to the main reception area. Parents are not allowed to see their child during the school day without the permission of a senior member of staff. Permission may be refused if the visit is not considered to be in the best interest of the child. No other adult will be given access to children without the agreement of their parents. Visitors to the school will be required to wear a visitor’s badge for the duration of the visit. In accordance with LEA policy, regular health and safety checks take place and the school is equipped to cope in the event of a fire hazard occurring.

Sporting Activities A variety of sports activities take place including rugby, football, netball, hockey, gymnastics, athletics and cricket. We use our own excellent on-site facilities.
