Education

RLDAM had a successful year in 2018 by passing a tax conformity bill and defeating attempts to create a paid family leave mandate and a propo-sition that would have increased taxes to pay for universal elder care.

Tax ConformityRLDAM advocated for and helped pass the tax conformity bill to ensure Maine’s tax law lined up with the new federal tax reform law. This bill was eventually able to win bipartisan support and will allow businesses to only have to keep one set of books, instead of multiple books to deal with differing tax laws.

Paid Family LeaveRLDAM helped defeat attempts to create a state mandate that would have created paid family medical leave. RLDAM testified against the bills cited the concerns and strains it would put on small businesses. The bill passed the legislature, but was vetoed by the Governor.

Ballot Question 1RLDAM supported the campaign against ballot question 1, which would have increased taxes on employers and employees to create a fund for universal elderly care. A broad coalition was formed to oppose the ballot question, which was defeated by a 63-37% margin.
