Who is Joe Berry?

Born in England, Joe Berry emigrated to Australia in 1919. From a varied career Joe became involved with Claude Fraser, generally known as the father of Self-Serve groceries in this country. Claude was the founder of BCC (Brisbane Cash & Carry) which was later to become the backbone of the Woolworths growth in the Australian grocery markets.

Constantly looking for

Page 4

new ideas, Joe’s quest for information took him on overseas study tours, particularly the United States. He was always looking for modern fresh ideas to implement in the grocery scene.

Not only did Joe contribute to the growth and development of BCC, his ideas and innovations dramatically affected the industry as a whole. Many practices taken for granted today, such as the supermarket trolley, were initially developed and trialled

by Joe Berry in the early 1950’s.

Open topped refrigeration was first commissioned by Joe Berry, along with pre-packed fruit and vegetables and the common “twist-tie”. Joe later developed self-serve wholesale warehouses. All of these innovations are now common place within the industry world wide.

Joe’s involvement in the grocery trade was continued by his son John, who was himself, a major part of the independent supermarket scene. John talks proudly of his fathers innovative contribution to the industry and it is for this reason that the Joe Berry Awards exist, so that innovation can continue through young executives.

Our History

The Joe Berry Award was launched in 1986 by the Queensland Grocery Industry Association. The QGIA was for years a vibrant, cross-industry, association before the major retailers moved to national offices.

The first winner, Bernie

Brookes, Buyer, Woolworths Queensland, who wrote on Category Development. Bernie has gone on to hold senior retail positions internationally. Bernie is the Award Patron. Our latest winner, Esra Ozege, Woolworths Account Manager, Lion Dairy & Drinks.

The purpose of the Award; to allow young executives from all parts of the industry to compete for a prestigious award. The program also allows Award sponsors to see closely the talent that exists across the industry. The prize was designed to allow the winner to add further and wider knowledge of retail to their personal portfolio.

The Award has been run every year since 1986, except 2005 while transferring to the ASMCA. Since 2006 the Award has had it’s home in Sydney and it has been expanded to cover all of Australia. The Award has grown greatly in that time and the number of sponsoring companies has also increased rapidly.

The competition remains

industry wide. The finalists and winners are from a variety of companies and roles and all have gone on to be promoted to more senior positions. Joe Berry

Promotional Planning and Creating a Positive Cycle

The industry has held on to long-term promotional processes that are no longer truly relevant. There is a need to break the promotion addiction/negative cycle and take promotions to a new level of customer impact. Promotion wastage or “promotion madness” prevails in the Australia FMCG industry.

In your essay consider where the promotion addiction lies between the retailer, supplier and important promotional support teams. Look also at what changes have happened to the promotional cycles and the potential for this to continue unchanged.

ESSAY TOPIC 1

Q. The promotional cycle can be broken and reinvented so that the wastage in terms of product, labour and supply chain cost is mitigated. Promotion types that have worked well in other markets and retail sectors, are now being reduced in number. What are the catalysts for reduction of these promotion types and can a win-win promotional model be created?

Page 12

Building an Efficient Model for Data Sharing

Retailers have developed widely used loyalty programs that have increasing data capture capacity. In Australia, the utilisation and sharing of that data varies across retailers. In some parts of the retail world data is readily shared, in others it is jealously guarded. There is no apparent model that can be used to allow all parties access to data for the benefit of the wider industry.

In your essay consider the measure of ‘value’ through the lens of the retailer, the supplier and the shopper. Compare the data sharing arrangements in Australia with either the US or UK.

ESSAY TOPIC 2

Q. The benefits of Transaction Data are more available to the data-owner who has options to withhold information or share information. Arguably there are levels of information that should be automatically shared versus data that is sensitive and covert. What retailer-supplier ‘sharing’ model would you suggest to create the best value from available data?

Page 13

Managing the “Last Mile” Problem

The ‘Last Mile’ Problem: the most efficient way to deliver goods into the hands of the customer continues to be an issue for all retail types. The growth of eCommerce has introduced the need for various delivery methods for differing customers and different locations. The calculation of profitability on the last-mile is still uncertain as various models ,such as home delivery/click & collect/delivery to car/locker pick up, are still under trial.

In your essay consider the way and the speed at which the industry is changing and look to predict whether current delivery options will survive. Where possible quantify the total cost of eCommerce delivery including the store overheads.

ESSAY TOPIC 3

Q. The most suitable and profitable eCommerce delivery models for Australia are debatable. The best models might be to the front-door or front-of-store. Some delivery options may be detrimental to the viability of bricks & mortar retailers. How will the rise of e-commerce fuel this debate and what have we learned from overseas experiences?

Page 14

The Rise of Machines and the Retail Workforce

Machinery and technology have always been part of the supply chain for retail players but the speed with which machines are replacing human workers is accelerating. While the cost of machinery may take years to amortise, the efficiencies that they are bringing are creating rapid returns in other parts of the chain. Whether the workforce is seeing these benefits is not always clear.

Consider machinery not just as technology advancement but as a shift in the way that the industry operates, from raw materials to the consumer’s hands. Consider automation and look at where the industry can best achieve total business growth through machinery innovations.

ESSAY TOPIC 4

Q. Across all parts of the industry, including manufacturing, technology and automation are providing many business benefits and changes. Accordingly, workforce numbers may significantly decline in short/medium term. How will existing job roles change and what are the important skill sets for the FMCG/Retailer workforce of the future?

Page 15

The Future of Brands in a Differentiated Market

The discussion on brands competing with own-brands/private labels has been constant for several decades but the importance of the discussion has not abated. Consumers continue to shop across the width of each retail sector with varying attitudes towards long-term brands and newer private label offerings. The growth of discount retailers has added to the discussion with pseudo-brands not necessarily seen as private labels.

In your essay consider the strategy of branding and why consumers attitudes have changed. Be prepared to challenge the status-quo of the current market, from the consumer perspective. Discuss from either a supplier or retailer view of this situation.

ESSAY TOPIC 5

Q. The position of branded goods within the Australian retail market is blurred and pseudo brands may own the future. Unconsidered hidden cost and risk are possibilities for retailers that pursue private label growth, while brand decline may be due to a forced reduction in consumer options. Can brands successfully differentiate in a market with multiple own-label tiers and pseudo-brands?

SUPPORT & ADVICE

If you are not sure where to start

Having chosen a topic, create a simple matrix of 5 key points, then write 5 supporting points under each key point. Now you have the basics, start writing. (You are not limited to 5 key points.)

The www.joeberryaward.com.au website has copies of some 2016 - 2018 entries that will show you what is required for content.

If you require assistance in developing your entry you can use the following support services:

The ASMCA – Joe Berry office for information clarity, ‘how to start assistance’ and mentoring during the process [email protected]

Your own company team or management.

Internet and library services provided that the end result is your own work and free of any plagiarism.

Yourself: re-read and check your work for spelling, grammar and continuity as many good essays fail on the lack of revision by their authors.

Other points to note:

Be aware of what an executive summary and an introduction do for your essay. Many people confuse the two and lose valuable essay space. Summary = what your essay is about, half to one page only; Introduction = getting started, lead-in information, a paragraph to half page

Set up your argument as a ‘trail’ and make sure that you stick to that trail during the essay writing. Good essays can lose points by drifting into arguments that do not relate to the topic, or by losing the plot.

Spelling and grammar are important! Check both, otherwise the meaning that you intended to put forward can be read as something completely different. This may result in a lower score for your essay.

Editing means a word-by-word proof reading of your work to ensure accuracy. After each sentence stop, read, and ask “does it convey my message?”

Shorter sentences have stronger impact. A sentence of over 20 words may be too long. Rephrase or edit for punctuation to add impact.

It is possible in reading essays to identify the change in writer or the origin of information. Be sure that any work is your own and that cut-and-paste information is referenced.

THE JUDGING PROCESS

There are two judging sections:

1. Essays are distributed to around 45 judges for scoring based on a specific criteria. The essays are sent out “blind” (no names, no employer details) and no judge receives an essay from their own company entries. Each essay will go out to 5 judges, usually with other essays of the same topic.Scores are out of 100 and the results are totalled and averaged to provide a ranking.

2. The top 6 essays receive invitations to face the judging panel on June 20th 2019 in Sydney. The panel is comprised of 20 senior executives from the sponsor group. Each finalists has 1-hour to present their topic, face Q&A on the essay and Q&A on general industry knowledge.

Judges feedback is not provided at the judging, this will be provided later.
