2019 Annual Report
Celebrating the Literacy Network

Member Nations We are are so blessed to be part of a network of people and
organizations who believe in and participate in literacy and
conversational English ministry with Bible Content. Member
Nations are important components in this growing network. A
Member Nation is an LEI “franchise” in a country. The Member
Nation does ministry in accordance with LEI standards, has its
own board and is responsible for its own finances. LEI-Canada
became a Member Nation in 2016. Representatives of Member
Nations meet every 4-5 years and have input for overall policy
and ministry directions.

Ministry (October 28) in Mississauga, Ontario.
Sharing the Vision in Churches
Rev. Carey Jo Johnston presented the LEI
ministry at Markham Chinese Presbyterian , Keswick
Presbyterian, St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Sutton, St.
Paul Presbyterian Nobleton, St. John Presbyterian Port
Perry as well as Oak Ridges Presbytery.
Hosting Ministry Partners
Rev. Samuel Lawerteh, Director of L&E Ghana ,
visited Canada in August to promote the ministry
among Canadian Ghanaian Churches. There are over
20,000 Ghanaians in the Toronto area with over 20
Ghanaian churches, plus language fellowships. Rev.
Lawerteh, Mrs. Sharon Hionides (Board Chair), and
Rev. Carey Jo Johnston visited the Ga/Dangbe
Language Homowo Gala to
promote li teracy.
Canada
40 Days of Prayer
We have started a new prayer init iat ive
for 40 days during Lent. Prayer i tems
are sent out by email weekly to people
who register to part icipate.

Training
Assisting with International Literacy Training Institute Tulsa, Oklahoma (June 17-21)
In cooperation with LEI-USA, Carey Jo Johnston
traveled to Tulsa to teach “Introduction to Primer Construct ion” June 17-21. This is one week of the 3-week training. She had 6 trainees for this course from USA, Nigeria, Ghana, and Colombia. Nat Nunoo
from L&E Ghana assisted with teaching the course.
Digital Training
Dr. Melina Gallo, missionary with LEI -USA, is
developing digital courses for LEI’s main trainings.
Rev. Carey Jo Johnston continued to develop a 2 -part
Digital course for Primer Construction.
Rev. Carey Jo Johnston to “Horn of Africa” –
In November, Carey Jo Johnston returned to the Horn of Africa to complete the development of l iteracy materials in the “A” language. The “A” people are nomadic camel herders, 95% i l l iterate. Carey Jo worked with a team of “A” language speakers to complete the 3 rd book which is 36 Bible Stories. They decided on the t it le for the 3 book series “Kawsiyyi
Safar” – Journey to Reading.

Our national missionary, Director Brian Feliz in
Comitancillo, and staff Maria, Herminio. and Eliceo,
continue to lead Mam literacy classes as well as
teacher trainings. They continue to develop stories in
Mam, Bible studies for radio, and assisting with Old
Testament translat ion.
This year they also helped
organize a celebrat ion for
the 20 th anniversary of the
Mam Bible.
Latin America
Guatemala City – Yovany & Esmerelda Hernandez
National missionaries Yovany and
Esmeralda in Guatemala City are
training teachers and teaching
literacy in Spanish. They attended a
special training for Partnership Development in
Colombia.
Colombia – Carolina Perdomo Carolina has been leading teacher training workshops for l iteracy in Spanish and local languages in Colombia. She has assisted groups in
developing
literacy materials in their local languages. Carolina also attended the Partnership Development course in Colombia.
Sierra Leone – partnering with Literacy Sierra Leone directed by Agnes Bangura. This has been a regrouping year after
the death of former director Gregory Bangura in December of 2018. Malawi –
Supporting literacy in Malawi as Maxwell Mpitanyanga trains teachers in Lambya, Chewa, Yao and Sena languages. Maxwell and other L&E Malawi team members revised the Chewa primers. Malawi suffered severe f looding in early 2019 from the hurricane.

Africa
Ghana –
Supporting Literacy & Evangelism Ghana – the Ghana
staff completed the Asante, Fante primers, and started
Bono primer. They also facil itated teacher trainings.
Nat Nunoo also traveled to Nigeria to assist with primer
construction. Rev. Carey Jo Johnston assisted in
reviewing and edit ing materials via email and Skype.
They also celebrated
World Literacy Day on
September 8 th.
Supporting the work
of Gyan Mochary,
l iteracy consultant in
northeast India.
Gyan held teacher trainings in various regions of India
and visited regions to promote literacy. They also began English
classes with the Little Flock Discipleship
School using the LEI ESL Curriculum.

The Mission
Literacy & Evangelism International equips the Church to share the message of Jesus Christ through the gif t of reading and conversational English.
The Strategy
We develop Bible-content materials to teach basic reading in local languages and conversational English.
We train church leaders and missionaries to use LEI materials for evangelism, discipleship and church planting.
We develop partnerships that expand the mission of LEI.
