40th Annual National Nursing Assistants Week!

Nursing Assistants Week is June 15th—22nd. It is designated to recognize nursing assistants who have dedicated their lives

to the well-being of others. Nursing assistants provide hands-on care and perform routine tasks under the

supervision of nursing and

medical staff.

More than 2.5 million nursing assistants help residents live in nursing homes and other

long-term care settings. They provide nearly 80 to 90 percent of the direct

care received by residents, bringing patience, a caring attitude and wisdom to their practices. Take time to recognize and honor our nursing assistants’ hard work and dedication during National Nursing

Assistants Week.

Thank you, Nursing Assistants, for all your hard work,

On Tuesday, June 20, 2017 at 11:24 P.M. summer officially begins in Minnesota!!!

Solstice means sun-stopping: to the point on the horizon where the sun appears to rise and set, stops and reverses direction after this day. On the solstice, the sun does not rise precisely in the east, but rises to the north of east and sets to the north of west; meaning it is visible in the sky for a longer period of time. Over the centuries, the June solstice has inspired countless festivals, midsummer celebrations and religious holidays. One of the world's oldest evidences of the Summer Solstice's importance in culture is Stonehenge in England, a megalithic structure which clearly marks the moment of the June solstice.

Chaplain’s Chat by Randy Somody

As I write this, I’m one day away from turning another year older. Another reminder that time is passing. Have you noticed—time just does not stand still! No matter how we might like it to slow down a little, it keeps moving forward. When our youngest daughter, Heidi, was about 8 years old, she looked in the mirror one day and got a very worried look on her face. She said, “I don’t want to grow up, I want to stay like I am.” When I took the time to listen to her, it became clear to me that she was afraid to think about growing up, and everything else that comes with that: Leaving home; going away to school; getting married; having a life of her own apart from her Mom and Dad; having children……you get the picture. Today, she is living in Georgia with her husband, Josh, and raising four children. Two boys and two girls. Amazing! When my wife’s mother was a few years younger than we are right now, she said that she looked in the mirror one day and she said to herself: “When did it happen? When did I start looking older.” There it is again, the passage of time. A reminder that we’re not going to be here forever! From my own life experience, when I look back to my mid-thirties, I remember those years between 30 and 40 as a time when I did a lot of thinking about my life and where it was going. And one day, as I thought deeply, (which I usually do—deeply, I mean)—it occurred to me that one of the most important, if not the most important, things on most of our minds as we get older, is—I want to know at the end of my life that it mattered that I was here. I think that what that translates into is a desire to know that someone is some day going to really miss me, and be very thankful that I was in their life. Can you identify with that? Mark Twain said: “The two most important days in a person’s life are the day they were born, and the day they found out why.” There it is—the “Why,” of life. The “Why” points to a few very important concepts. “Why?” speaks of purpose and meaning. It speaks of making a difference, making a contribution; of living for something bigger than myself. As a Chaplain, I think that one of the most important parts of what I do is to come alongside people and walk with them as a fellow traveler on part of their journey toward finding answers to the “Whys” of life. Really, this is the essence of that mysterious word “Spirituality.” Regardless of your faith or religious background, Spirituality is a part of all of our lives on some level. And it is such a privilege when someone invites me into that part of their life experience. I never barge in. I wouldn’t want someone doing that to me, either. But, if you invite me in, it would be my great privilege to walk with you on the journey as you discover some of the reasons why you are here—and that you matter. Mark time. Celebrate life. Take time to enjoy the journey. Breathe, and live, in the moment—It’s good that you are here. Chaplain Randy Somody

Every Providence Place Newsletter is a way to mark time. It’s another indicator of the passage of time: a reminder that we’re “moving” into a new month; a chance to look back and to look forward.

CLASS REUNION

I would have graduated from high school in 1952, but I quit in the 10th grade to join the

Air Force. I was 17 at the time, so I had my mother sign papers for me to enlist. I enlisted

in 1950, just 2 months after North Korea invaded South Korea. I retired from the service

after 20 years, in November 1970. The following June my, would have been, graduating

class held their 20th class reunion. Someone learned that I was at home and I received

an invitation from the class president, inviting me to the reunion! I didn't graduate from

school with the class, so why were they inviting me to a reunion? But I figured since they

cared enough to invite me, I make an appearance. I wore my formal blue Air Force

uniform with a white shirt and black bow tie. Of course, I had to show off my medals! I

had twelve medals and was quite proud of them. At 37 years old, I wasn't a bad looking

fellow.

The reunion was being held in the basement of a Baptist church. There are two levels,

with a landing in between. On the landing, there was a man in a weird looking uniform

who announced the arrival of classmates. When I arrived on the landing, he called out

“Air Force Sergeant Owen Evans,” in a loud voice. There I stood for all to see and they

starred! I went on down the stairs and shook hands with some old friends and received

many hugs from the girls. After that, I was free to move around and eavesdrop.

I walked by one couple and heard the man say, “Whatever happened to that foxy-red

head named Susan?” The lady replied, “I'm Susan!”

Two women were standing by a window and one said, “This can't be our group, Ethel,

there's no one in here but a bunch of old people.”

I over heard another lady say, “Why do we need a high school reunion? I write the gossip

column. I already know who got fat!”

I heard another lady say, “Some of my classmates have changed so much, they don't even

recognize me!”

I overheard another classmate say that she had decided to take an aerobics class. She

said, “I bent, I twisted, I gyrated, and jumped up and down for an hour. By the time I got

my leotard on, the class was over.”

Two men were talking. One said, “WOW!. . .so you became a . . . er. . . a. . .and how is

the pimping trade now a days?”

After that, I decided it was time for me to leave!

Poet’s Place Annunciation

To the impossibly; yes!

Enter and penetrate.

O’ Spirt, come and bless

This hour: the star is late.

Only the surety of love

Can break the bonds of hate.

Written by Miss Vickie M Lovers Apart

In what love does fidelity consist?

I will be true to you, of course.

My body’s needs I can’t resist.

Come back to you without remorse.

And you behind the footlight’s lure.

Kissing an actress on the stage.

Will leave her presence there. I’m sure.

As I my people on the page

And yet, I love you darling.

I sat with someone at a table

And gloried in our minds that met

As sometimes stranger’s minds are able

To leap the bounds of time and space.

Written by Miss Vickie M. Beautiful Child of Mine Beautiful child of mine

You are so divine. You glow

When you smile Even if it’s only for awhile

The joy of the Lord is in you You know how

To love me back You are a gift from God.
