INTROI have a cool job...I spend my time seeing art, being surrounded by art and collaborating with wildly creative people that have resulted in amazing artistic experiences. Artists keep the world spinning for me with their passion, integrity and just flat out kick-assery. Their commitment to tell their unique stories in their unique ways, informs, inspires, ingnites and, most importantly, connects me to all my humanity. I’m hooked, I admit it. The performers at the Shadbolt this season will get you hooked as well. They will tell you fantastic tales, lead you down paths untraveled and set fire to your imagination. Most importantly, they will open your heart to the deep, certain knowledge, that we are all connected.

And isn’t that cool?

LIVE AT THE ‘BOLT: KASANDRA FLAMENCOSeptember 20 | 8pmKasandra Flamenco is thrilled to present “Ritmo y Soniquete” a super charged, high octane flamenco show starring one of Spain’s hottest flamenco dancers, Ivan Vargas from the caves of Sacromonte in Granada. Experience the Kasandra Flamenco Ensemble at its most raw and powerful, showcasing the best of improvisational, rhythmic flamenco with spontaneity, passion and emotion. This is pure flamenco at its roots as the artists torch the stage!

NO FOREIGNERSOctober 9-12 | 8pmHONG KONG EXILE

No Foreigners is a multi-media performance that meditates on North American Chinese shopping malls as spaces of cultural creation and clash. Multiple storylines begin in a mall and quickly diverge—catapulting us across cities, between Cantonese and English, in and out of the afterlife, through past, present and future.

Weaving together text, miniatures, digital backdrops and live cameras, No Foreigners examines our changing relationships to these social spaces and the histories, characters, experiences and ephemera that keep inviting us back.

MARGIE GILLIS: EVOLUTIONSOctober 16 & 17 | 8pmEvolutions offers a new tour concept: a transcendental and transformative adventure for audiences, with the fluidity and distinctiveness associated with Margie Gillis. In each show, Margie will be accompanied by seven Legacy Project dancers.

Audiences will be offered an entirely singular experience, depending on the composition of the group performing. Spectators will be transported through a selection of works from Margie’s prolific repertoire, both in solos and group dances, interpreted acknowledging the individuality of each dancer’s experience. Every show includes new choreographies and a Margie Gillis solo performance.

SARAH SLEAN WITH KEVIN FOXSeptember 26 | 8pmCanadian Sarah Slean is a three-time JUNO nominee. Her music borrows from cabaret, rock, pop and orchestral: knit together by the startling poetry of her lyrics, virtuosic piano-playing, and that voice, described by the CBC as “a 19th century Kate Bush”. Sarah has headlined across Canada and toured internationally with Bryan Ferry, Rufus Wainwright, Alanis Morissette, Andrew Bird, Feist, Ron Sexsmith and Chris Isaak.

Kevin Fox is a sought-after arranger/composer and in-demand recording artist. He has composed arrangements for Justin Bieber, recorded with Celine Dion and Chantal Kreviazuk and performed with Steven Page and Olivia Newton John. Kevin’s three solo albums combine his signature instrument and charismatic voice to create a captivating cello-driven folk/pop

BRUCE MCCULLOCHTALES OF BRAVERY AND STUPIDITY November 8 | 8pmTales of Bravery and Stupidity is a one man show that is funny and, at times, touching. Part stand-up, part storytelling, it looks at some of the bravely stupid things that Bruce has done, and things we all do as we get ourselves in and out of trouble as we “throw ourselves at life.”

Bruce McCulloch is a member of The Kids in the Hall and the creator and star of Young Drunk Punk. Bruce is currently producing and directing the series TallBoyz for CBC.

DON AMERONovember 2 | 8pmDon Amero is an award-winning, singer/songwriter who has been performing and speaking across Canada for a decade. This three-time JUNO nominee genuinely connects with his audiences with his easy and effortless charm. Don impresses wherever he goes with his messages of encouragement, positivity and beauty.

KISMET, THINGS HAVE CHANGEDNovember 13-16 | 8pmCHOP THEATRE

A show about fate and destiny a decade in the making. Ten years ago, four artists in their twenties travelled across Canada and interviewed one hundred people, aged 1 to 100, about their beliefs.

Now, with four marriages, five kids, two parental deaths and two cross-country moves between them, the artists are in different places in their lives, with different concerns. So the team set out to find the surviving people and interview them again later— 10 years later and with some new questions. What they discovered on the road is revealed in a complicated yet intimate portrait of change.

BED & BREAKFASTBY MARK CRAWFORDOctober 26 & 27 | 8pm ARTS CLUB SERIES

When Brett inherits a family estate, he and his partner, Drew, move to a quiet little tourist town to set up a B&B. But will these big city boys face friction in their new community? With dozens of hilarious characters all portrayed by two actors, it’s a heartfelt comedy about “being out,” skeletons in the closet, and finding a place to call home.

TONYE AGANABENovember 28 | 8pmTonye is a singer-songwriter born in London England to Nigerian and Zimbabwean parents. She moved to Canada in her teens and started a career in music at 17. Her style can be described as Soul / Neo-Folk / Hiphop. She is a Much More Music Video Award recipient, social justice advocate and the kind of singer/performer that turns heads wherever she plays.

In 2015 her trajectory was interrupted by a MS diagnosis, yet a new Phoenix-like person is emerging from the proverbial ashes. She now calls MS the best thing that ever happened to her and is on a career trajectory that involves connecting deeper with her audience and that sees her creating a new community for herself.

CHARLIE BROWN CHRISTMASDecember 11&12 | 8pmA CORY WEEDS PRODUCTION

Jerry stands on stage and tells the story of how it, all of it, almost never happened. Somehow disaster was averted at every turn and the magic of the music, of Charlie Brown, the vision of Vince Guaraldi, persevered. It is, today, undeniably a classic, a part of the canon. It was 1965; drummer Jerry Granelli, the newest member of the Vince Guaraldi Trio, with Fred Marshall on bass went into a San Francisco studio one afternoon. In just a three-hour session they recorded the soundtrack for a scrappy little animated Christmas special featuring the Peanuts gang.

JAZZ WALK AT THE SHADBOLTDecember 1 11am-10pmA CORY WEEDS/SHADBOLT CENTRE CO-PRODUCTION

TELEMETRY loopNovember 21-23 | 8pm November 21 | 10pm November 23 | 4pmRADICAL SYSTEM ARTS

Telemetry loop is the re-imagination of RSA’s most successful work Telemetry. This 360 immersive experience pushes the audience further and digs deeper into its’ artistic concepts. One of the most direct reception/transmission cycles from an audial signal is dance. Telemetry loop looks to transmit the art forms of bebop footwork, swing and tap dance with House and Contemporary dance, supported by a live-interactive environment of light, sound and video. This environment is controlled by a singular source, returning to concepts around radio sciences and the idea of a control tower. In Telemetry loop, the tap dancer is the control tower – directly controlling and affecting the lighting, video and sound throughout the piece. Photo: David Cooper Photo: Liz Roza

THE SHOPLIFTERSBY MORRIS PANYCHFebruary 8 & 9 | 8pmARTS CLUB SERIES

Meet Alma, a career shoplifter who prefers the “five-finger discount” over any senior citizen’s deal. When a grocery store theft goes awry, her elaborate life of petty crime is halted by an overzealous security guard and his affable mentor. With sharp-witted comic observations, Morris Panych has expertly drawn a cast of misfit characters that will leave you rooting for all sides to come out on top.

THE BELIEVERS ARE BUT BROTHERSJanuary 29 – February 1 | 8pmJAVAAD ALIPOOR

We live in a time where old orders are collapsing. From the post colonial nation states of the Middle East, to the EU and the American election.

Amidst this, a generation of young men find themselves burning with resentment; without the money, power and sex they think they deserve. This crisis of masculinity leads them on a journey into an online world of fantasy, violence and reality. This Fringe First award winning and Total Theatre Nominated (Experimentation & Innovation) multi-media show weaves together their stories.

GOD’S LAKEBY FRANCESCA ALBRIGHT & KEVIN LEE BURTONFebruary 5-8 | 8pmA CASTLEREIGH THEATRE PROJECT

God’s Lake is documentary theatre about the strength and resilience of people in the remote fly-in reserve of God’s Lake Narrows, Manitoba following traumatic events of unresolved justice and a complex and challenging past. A rare glimpse into the lived reality of this community as told verbatim from interviews with its members over six months in 2017.

Using bold northern imagery, a live score by Ziibiwan, and heightened physicality — God’s Lake offers a unique opportunity to witness the complex issues facing people in a remote community and provides understanding for those with no comprehension of the reserve system, let alone life on a remote First Nations reserve.

MAMA’S BOYJanuary 23 & 24 8pmMIKE DELAMONT

Mama’s Boy is the heart-breaking, funny and endearing true story about a young boy being raised by a single mother who struggled with an addiction her entire life.

It is an intimate and beautiful performance, told through the eyes of one of Canada’s most popular comedians.

FEBRUARYMADAMA BUTTERFLYFebruary 22, 27 & 29 | 8pmFebruary 24 & 26 | 2pmBURNABY LYRIC OPERA

Madama Butterfly is the tragic story of a beautiful young geisha who falls in love and marries an American Naval Lieutenant, only to have him leave her and take their only son back to America. Puccini’s magnificent music soars throughout this heartbreaking story of love, betrayal, and the clashing of two cultures in the late 1890’s. One of the world’s most popular operas with some of the most beautiful music ever written, Burnaby Lyric Opera’s production team and the best of BC’s young opera singers bring this “must see” opera to life.

FAROFA AND CARO PIEROTTOFebruary 22 | 8pmFasten your seatbelts, you are about to take a ride on BR-101, the major highway connecting Brazil from North to South! Brazilian exports, Farofa and vocalist Caro Pierotto will be your guides on this musical tour featuring the smokin’ hot rhythms and sensuous melodies of their birth place.

Farofa’s raw talent thrives on the collaborations of its members, touring musicians Felipe Fraga (Percussion), Isaias Elpes (Bass), JP Mourão (Brazilian Viola Caipira) and Luis Mascaro (Violin). Through their independent journeys, they have worked with such prolific artists as Ricky Martin, Lee Ritenour, Selena Gomez and Foo Fighters – and together, they are turning heads with their fresh and imaginative set lists and avante-garde mashups.

SAMANTHA MARTIN & DELTA SUGARFebruary 20 | 8pmBubbling up from the cauldron of roots Americana music, Samantha Martin is an artist of extraordinary power, gravitas and deep-seated emotion. A dynamic front woman, she possesses a stunning voice that is capable of summoning up tidal waves of spine-tingling emotion in one instance while delicately bringing out the nuances of a gut wrenching lyric in the next.

The vocal alchemy of Delta Sugar is not the work of a single talent though, with her “co-vocalists,” Sherie Marshall and Mwansa Mwansa, the vocal blend Delta Sugar produces is pure, unadulterated gospel-tinged, neuron-tingling magic.

MARION COWINGSMarch 19 | 8pm Marion Cowings is a bandleader, singer and educator. He was mentored by the legendary vocalist Jon Hendricks, and while still in high school was chosen as a vocal soloist with Leonard Bernstein and the New York Philharmonic. He went on to replace Dave Lambert in the ground breaking Lambert, Hendricks and Ross, and over the course of his career has appeared at venues such as Lincoln Center, the Blue Note New York and Tokyo, the Berlin Jazz Festival, and in Holland’s North Sea Jazz Festival.

BETWEEN BREATHSMar 25-28 | 8pmARTISTIC FRAUD OF NEWFOUNDLAND

Well known in Newfoundland as the Whale Man, Dr. Jon Lien pioneered techniques for rescuing whales entrapped in fishing nets. Often risking his very life in the water with the formidable and frightened animals, Dr. Lien would seek to earn their trust as much as the fishermen’s. He looked for the best way to free whales while doing as little damage to the fishing gear as possible. His efforts saved the lives of over 500 animals, and earned him the hard-won respect of the island’s fishermen. Between Breaths jumps time backwards, from the final moments of Lien’s life – in a wheelchair and dealing with brain damage due to a car accident – to his very first whale intervention. As his life becomes further and further confined, his mind stretches itself in memories of release and salvation.

KIM’S CONVENIENCEBY INS CHOIMarch 14 & 15 | 8pmARTS CLUB SERIES

Mr. Kim, a Korean shopkeeper, grapples with both a changing neighbourhood landscape and the chasm between him and his second-generation offspring. This journey of a fractured but loving family forgiving the past and confronting the future is a new Canadian classic. APRIL

SPOOKY ACTIONApril 22-25 | 8pmINVERSO PRODUCTIONS/ LESLIE TELFORD

Spooky Action is a dance project inspired by Einstein’s famous phrase referring to particles that are so closely linked, they share the same existence. This new interdisciplinary work by Inverso Productions extends the theory of particle entanglement to human connections. Spooky Action brings together thought- provoking dance, engaging narrative by Barbara Adler and original composition by James Meger to probe the mysterious ways we act on each other’s lives. It is by turns intricate, mysterious, refined, and dryly witty.
