In this series, Sumeet Nagdev will teach you some basic positions of modern dance. Modern dance started as a rebellion against classical ballet. Modern and post modern dance grew into contemporary dance in the mid-20th Century.

Step 1: Place your hips on the floor completely and stretch your spine straight up. With your knees bent and soles placed completely on the floor, relax your arms on your knees.

Step 2: Brush the pointed right foot spirally left, making it go around your body. Let the right arm flow and stretch while you try and look at your knee. Use the left hand to support yourself and take your hips off the floor. This is called ‘spiralling in’.

Step 3: Come back to the start position but this time place your palms next to your hips. Look up and relax.

Step 4: Repeat Step 2 but this time towards the opposite side.

Step 5: Come back to the start position with your palms placed next to your hips as you did in Step 3.

Step 6: Rond de jambe (literally, ‘round of leg’) the right foot, that is move the right foot in a circular motion anti-clockwise and release your hips off the floor facing your left side.

Step 7: Bring the left knee off the floor and try and reach forward with your left hand.

Step 8: Release the left foot and bend the knee, turning out from your hips. This position is called an ‘attitude’. Here, you can use your arms creatively, stretching and shaping them as you like as shown in the picture.

Step 9: Release the left foot behind and pivot facing the other side with your left arm stretching in front and lunging with your left knee.

Step 10: Lift your right foot up, bending the right knee and touching the pointed toe to the bottom of the left knee. Your right arm should release upwards and your left arm should be in front. As you do this, fall forward to add movement.

Step 11: Release the body forward with your right foot and left arm in front. This is the finish, so create an impact with your movement.
