Message from our President…

September 2018 will be a month to be remembered! I sincerely hope that everyone came through Hurricane Florence unscathed with minimal damage. Most of us left the area and had trials and tribu-lations trying to get back home. We started the month with our annual hamburger and hotdog cookout. It was a lot of fun I think eve-rybody enjoyed my cooking with a lot of help from Dennis Faver. Then Hurricane Florence put a damper on most of the rest of the month’s activities. Because of the hurricane SOS Fall Migration was cancelled as well as our club “free pour” at the OD pavilion. We also had to cancel our scheduled dance on September 21st at the OKI Moose Lodge, but we were able to reschedule it with a dance on the September 28th. A big “thank you” to DJ Jimmy Bruno and the OKI Moose Lodge to accommo-date us! Next up for the club is our 15th Annual Beach Music Shag Dance & Charity Fundraiser benefiting VFW’s “Operation Uplink” and our county’s New Hope Clinic which will be held on October 12th at the OKI Moose Lodge. There is still time to solicit businesses for giveaways and door prizes. The success of this program depends on the efforts of everyone to come together. Remember, for October, we are switching our dance venues. Our October 12th dance will be at the OKI Moose Lodge and our October 26th dance will be at the OKI VFW. We are doing this due to the turnouts that we have for “Operation Uplink”. We already had club members sell all of their tickets and many members have already mentioned donations. We are still looking for items that we can auction off at the silent auction and also at the Chinese auction. We’re also looking for items that we can give away as door prizes so if you haven’t done so, please go out and solicit the people that you know can donate these kinds of items. For more information on “Operation Uplink”, go to pages 7 -10. So for now let’s enjoy the dancing and the friendship and “no mo Flo!” We hope to see you on the dance floor!

Executive Committee Meeting Minutes, September 5, 2018...

PRESENT: Chuck Boney, President; John Hutton, Vice President; Dennis Faver, Treasurer; Joe Malinowski, Member-ship/Newsletter/Website, Cathy Myers, Secretary, and Katy O’Neill, Operation Uplink Chairperson

The meeting was called to order at 4:34 PM by President, Chuck Boney.

SECRETARY’S REPORT: The minutes were approved as published.

TREASURER’S REPORT: Treasurer Dennis Faver reported that August was a positive cash flow month and after the dispersal of funds and DJ checks, the current balance is $4,930.70. This includes money from the door, 50-50 and Uplink Tickets. Chuck Boney moved that the report be approved. Cathy Myers seconded. Unanimously approved.

OLD BUSINESS:

• The August dances were well attended.

• The September 7th Dance will be Hotdogs & Hamburgers on the club. Dennis Faver has purchased the supplies. Dennis and Chuck will get the grille on Friday afternoon. Chuck will pick up the trays.

• SOS card and Fun Monday ticket money has been sent in and has been verified as received.

• The SOS “Fall Migration” Free Pour will be held on September 22nd from 1 PM until 4 PM or until the money runs out. It will be handled the same as last April with wrist bands and chips.

• Katy O’Neill gave an update on Operation Uplink, reminding us that there were only 35 days left. We still need do-nations which can be brought to the September dances or delivered to Katy or Chuck or they will make arrange-ments to pick them up. An hour-long work session has been scheduled at the OKI VFW on Tuesday, October 9th from 3-4 PM to arrange baskets, type up inventories, make the raffle ticket table and create the Silent Auction Bid sheets. Anyone interested in assisting can just show up. She also gave a list of the items donated so far.

NEW BUSINESS:

• The next dance will be on September 7th with the theme of “Dog Days of Summer with DJ Gene Sistare. The September 21st dance will feature DJ Jim Bruno while we “Welcome Fall”.

• Chuck reminded us that the dance locations in October will be reversed to accommodate Operation Uplink.

COMMUNICATION & MEMBERSHIP:

• The Website is current.

• Joe Malinowski reports there are now 238 members, an all time high for the club!

• Badges are up to date.

• Joe sends a welcome Email to all new members.

With no other business, Chuck Boney adjourned the meeting at 5:05 PM.

The official Atlantic hurricane season begins June 1 and runs through Nov. 30, although hurricanes can form for a few weeks before and after that window. In other parts of the world, like the western Pacific, hurricanes can form year-round. "Hurricane" is the name used for the most powerful tropical cyclones in the Atlantic Ocean and the northeastern Pacific Ocean — those bearing sustained winds of 74 mph and above. Hurricanes are generally called "typhoons" in the northwestern Pacific Ocean and "severe cyclonic storms" in the south Pacific and the Indian Ocean.

Tropical cyclones are rotating low-pressure systems carrying thunderstorms but no iden-tifiable "front," which is the boundary that separates two air masses of different densi-ties in most storm systems. Tropical cyclones with sustained winds of less than 39 mph are called "tropical depressions," while those with sustained winds of 39 mph to 73 mph are called "tropical storms."

What are the hurricane categories?

A hurricane's power is measured on the Saffir–Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale, which was developed in 1971 by Herbert Saffir, U.N. civil engi-neer who died in 2007, and Robert Simpson, then the director of the National Hurricane Center, who died in 2014. The scale separates hurri-canes into five categories, with 1 being the weakest and 5 being the strongest. Category 3, 4 and 5 hurricanes are called "major hurricanes."

Category 1 (74 mph to 95 mph): Very dangerous winds with some damage to homes and trees.

Category 2 (96 mph to 110 mph): Extremely dangerous winds causing extensive damage to homes, trees and roads, often resulting in near-total power loss for several days to weeks.

Category 3 (111 mph to 129 mph): Devastating damage to homes, trees and roads. Electricity and water are often unavailable for several days to weeks.

Category 4 (130 mph to 156 mph): Catastrophic damage to homes, trees and power infrastructure. Most areas are uninhabitable and without power for weeks or months.

Category 5 (157 mph and higher): Most homes and other structures are destroyed. Most areas are uninhabitable and without pow-er for weeks or months.

How do hurricanes form?

Tropical cyclones develop when low-pressure systems gather heat and energy as they absorb warm ocean water near the equator. Evapora-tion from the ocean surface fuels them like giant heat engines, creating powerful winds twisting around a relatively peaceful center, called the "eye." The winds rotate counterclockwise north of the equator and clockwise south of the equator. When a tropical cyclone makes land-fall or crosses over cooler waters, its source of power disappears, so the storm begins to weaken.

How are hurricanes named?

Hurricanes and other tropical cyclones are given men's and women's names by the World Meteorological Organization to make them easier to keep straight. Different lists of names are used for different regions, reflecting local naming customs (the letters Q, U, X, Y and Z are never used for Atlantic hurricanes). When a tropical cyclone is particularly deadly or damaging, its name is retired. As of January, 82 Atlantic hurri-cane names had been retired. The most in any year, five, blew through in 2005: Dennis, Katrina, Rita, Stan and Wilma.

Which modern hurricanes have caused the most damage?

Reliable records have been kept only for the last half-century or so. Ranking hurricanes by the extent of the damage they cause is difficult, because monetary inflation and ever-improving building codes make comparisons imprecise. Here's a list of the deadliest Atlantic hurricanes since 1900:

Hurricane Mitch, Central America/Yucatán Peninsula/South Florida, October-November 1998 — 11,374 people killed

Hurricane Fifi-Orlene, Jamaica/Central America/Mexico, September 1974 — 8,200 people killed

Hurricane Flora, Caribbean/Florida, September-October 1963 — 7,193 people killed

Unnamed hurricane ("Galveston" hurricane), Caribbean/Texas, August-September 1900 — 6,000 to 12,000 people killed

Unnamed hurricane ("Okeechobee" hurricane), Lesser Antilles/Puerto Rico/Florida, September 1928 — 4,075 people killed

The "Carolina Shag" is said to have been born along the coast of the Atlantic Ocean near Ocean Drive in North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. The basic step for this upbeat, quick and smooth dance is a six-count, eight-step pattern danced in a slot. The dance originated in the African American community in the late 1930s and rose in popularity among a broader audience in the 1940s, as interest peaked in the “beach music” that accompanied it.

The Shag, specifically the Carolina Shag, has been called the “swing dance of the South” and lives in a class of its own. It has since been described as a “cold beer on a warm night with a hot date and no plans for tomorrow.” It’s often linked to the term “swing dancing,” though the two dances shouldn’t be lumped into the same category.

The Shag in North Myrtle Beach

Lifeguards, waitresses and other young adults are the ones who are credited with starting the Shag in Myrtle Beach. Dino Thompson, author of Boogie Woogie Beats and one of South Carolina’s original Shaggers, explains the dance’s origins: “We started dancing like we talked to girls at the beach – laid back, slow and easy.”

One thing that makes the Shag such a popular dance is that anyone can do it – whether you’re six years old or 96 years old. It breaks barriers and brings everyone together with one common purpose: to have fun and enjoy the music. Dino explains that it was the music that changed everything for the young dancers back in the day. “The sheer power of the emotional appeal of music brought the races together. Black and white, rich and poor, jumped the rope and came down from the balconies to share the music and a memory.” All that mattered was the dance floor, and this school of thought still rings true for dancers today.

Where to Shag in South Carolina

When it comes to the best Shagging spots in North Myrtle Beach, the OD Pavilion, Ducks and Fat Harold’s Beach Club are three popular establishments. And if you stop by, you’re almost guaranteed to see a few Shag legends busting a move on the dance floor. So, if you’re looking to learn a few new steps and take part in a true South Caro-lina tradition, just drive down Hwy 17 to North Myrtle Beach.

Our September 7th “Dog Days of Summer!” dance at the OKI VFW had a group of 64 SOBS, 2 new Members and 1 guest (Wendy Love). Chuck Boney & Dennis Fa-ver did a great job serving up our grilled hamburgers & hotdogs “on the club!” Club favorite DJ Gene Sistare did an outstanding job playing for our nice end of summer crowd. A big thanks to Sandy Boney & Elaine Faver who again did the decorations for our dance party. And, another big THANK YOU to all who brought those delicious sides & desserts to share

The “Welcome Fall… Good Riddance Florence!” Dance on September 28th at the OKI Moose Lodge had a great crowd of 82 SOBS, David Dooley & Mary Couvillon (Cape Fear Shag Club) and Tom & Linda Romero (Northern VA Shag Club), and 2 guests (Sean & Robin Fitzgerald). October DJ Information...

Summer is over, but it gave us many great opportunities to dance! DJs Gene Sistare and Jim Bruno did a great job for the club. I am trying to get back into the ocean and beach lifestyle after the recent storm. Please note that our dance venues are reversed this month: the first dance is at the Oak Island Moose Lodge and our second dance at the Oak Island VFW. October will also be the first month of our Sunday dance series at The Lazy Turtle Bar & Grill on Oak Island. We have two new DJs playing for us this month. DJ “Fessa” John Hook will be playing at our Friday, October 12th Operation Uplink VFW Fund-raiser event. The ”Fessa” is one of the legendary DJs of Beach Music. John has been involved in Beach Music since the early 1970’s. He is the author of Shagging in the Carolinas which chroni-cles the history of shag dancing and beach music. His latest publication is the 2 volume set Beach Music Guide, 1945-2006 which contains extensive information on Beach Music artists and entries of over 26,000 beach music songs. He now syndicates three radio shows weekly on 58+ radio stations across the United States and has been affiliated with numerous radio stations through the years. He can be heard locally on 94.1 FM “The Beach” in Wilmington. His pro-grams have recently been a feature on the Sirius Radio Network Carolina Shag station. He has an internet presence with his “Jukin Oldies” programs. His thorough knowledge of beach music has rightly earned him his nickname of “Fessa”. He has played our Project Uplink party for

many years. It will be a wonderful evening. DJ Ken Jones will be the DJ for our first dance in this 3rd season of Sunday afternoon dances at the Oceanfront Lazy Turtle Bar and Grill. He is from Pender County. This will be Ken’s first time playing for us. My wife Katy and I have gotten to know Ken and his wife Sandy through our Shag Dance cruises as Ken is one of the DJs on the Sam and Lisa West Cruise. Ken and Sandy are won-derful dancers and teach Shag lessons at the East Coast Shag Classic held at Wrightsville Beach every winter. Ken plays regularly in Southeastern North Carolina and has for many years. They are looking forward to coming to the Lazy Turtle. Our fall and winter Sunday dances are always a great way to spend an afternoon. Make that Sunday a beach and dancing afternoon.

DJ JJ Kinlaw will be playing our Halloween dance for us. JJ lives in Carolina Shores after moving down to North Carolina from Virginia. JJ is one of the staff DJ at Fat Harold’s Beach club where he plays regularly each month and during SOS events. JJ also plays at the Landmark Ocean Drive Pavilion in North Myrtle Beach. JJ has been a DJ since his high school years. He spent some time as Road Manager for the group Bill Deal and the Rhondells and has also been in the restaurant business. I think that the SOBS will enjoy our evening with JJ. In years past we have had some great costumes-what will yours be? Put this on your calendar and get out your dancing shoes. We continue to enjoy the Shag lifestyle as much as is possible and are looking forward to see-ing all you SOBS at our upcoming dances. The day after the Halloween dance we are off on a

Holiday Band shag cruise and will be joined by other club Members. Katy and I hope that all of our club Members came through the recent storm with minimum impacts.

“UPDATE” - Operation Uplink as of September 30, 2018... Hurricane Florence bore down on us last week and threatened the Operation Uplink donations with rising waters in our gar-age. John and I quickly moved all the art work, the baskets, the lounge chair, griddle, jewelry, golf bag and the rest of the SOBS’ auction items to higher ground. Although we personally sustained damage, NO UPLINK ITEMS WERE AFFECTED BY THE HURRICANE!

Operation Uplink is quickly upon us... October 12th! “Thank you” to everyone listed on the table showing our item count as of today. As you will see from the table, we have a wide selection of goodies for your bidding and raffle chances. We look for-ward to the additional items which will join this count.

How to donate? Using the community solicitation letter offered in the newsletter solicit items from your favorite restaurants, service providers and friends. The top of the letter acts as their receipt, and the bottom portion acts as ours. Turn in the bottom portion with the donated item. Print out as many as you like!! Perhaps you, like so many of our Members, are an arti-san and would like to donate your handiwork to this worthwhile event. Perhaps you would rather simply purchase items for donation.

There are no hidden fees or restrictions on these Free Call Days; all calls are free from midnight to midnight Eastern Time. On October 12, 2018, the Society of Brunswick Shaggers (SOBS) dance club will hold their 15th annual Beach Music Shag Dance & Fundraiser at the Moose Lodge on Long Beach Rd, Oak Island. All profits from this event will be do-nated to the VFW’s Operation Uplink and Brunswick County’s New Hope Clinic. Our organization has donated over $40,000 through the local VFW to provide US Service men and women with free call days and Internet con-nections. Our event will include a dance with DJ John “Fessa” Hook, a Silent Auction, raffles, a 50/50 drawing and door prizes.

Would your organization or business be willing to support our event through the donation of items suitable for any of these categories? Examples of items donated in years past include DJ services, gift cards, golf and hotel packag-es, airplane rides, boat rides, ceramics, works from local artists, a grill, jewelry, tote bags, and services from local area restaurants. If you prefer, we can accept monetary donations from your business. Your name will be en-tered into the door prize drawing and your company’s name/Business cards will be prominently featured on our Wall of Fame at the event.

Our September 7th “Dog Days of Summer!” dance at the OKI VFW had a group of 64 SOBS, 2 new members and 1 guest (Wendy Love). Chuck Boney & Dennis Faver did a great job serving up our grilled hamburgers & hotdogs “on the club!” Club favorite DJ Gene Sistare did an outstanding job playing for our nice end of summer crowd.

The “Welcome Fall… Good Riddance Florence!” Dance on September 28th at the OKI Moose Lodge had a great crowd of 82 SOBS, David Dooley & Mary Couvillon (Cape Fear Shag Club) and Tom & Linda Romero (Northern VA Shag Club), and 2 guests (Sean & Robin Fitzgerald). And, we had 3 new members join us! A big “THANK YOU” goes out DJ Jim Bruno for rescheduling for us after cancellation of our September 21 dance due to someone by the name of FLORENCE!
