How to qualify and apply for rebates

Many of MidAmerican Energy’s EnergyAdvantage® programs feature rebates that defray the often higher cost of energy-efficient equipment and materials. Preapproval is required for custom projects, building optimization services and targeted industrial system optimization. After installation of your new purchase has been completed, send in the appropriate MidAmerican Energy rebate application with a copy of your sales receipt and/or itemized invoice. Some products and services may require additional documentation, such as a yellow EnergyGuide label. These additional requirements are noted on each rebate application.

Rebate applications for products and services that typically are completed by an equipment dealer/installer can be obtained directly from that place of business. All rebate applications are available online at www.midamericanenergy.com/iowa-bus-forms. Rebate applications must be submitted within six months of dealer invoice, or by Dec. 31, 2018, whichever comes first, for the equipment/material purchased. You also can call our rebate processing center at 800-894-9599 from 8 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday through Friday, to have applications sent to you.

COMMERCIAL ENERGY SOLUTIONSImprove the performance of your commercial building through MidAmerican Energy’s Commercial Energy Solutions services. This program promotes comprehensive energy efficiency for existing commercial buildings of all sizes through free energy assessments and building optimization services. You can

increase your property values by lowering your monthly operating costs and investing in advanced efficient technologies, while improving building operation and comfort.

Did you know?

Thirty percent! That’s the amount of energy the average commercial building wastes. It’s often possible to reduce energy use by 10 percent with little or no cost. Capture easy wins by starting with simple changes, like adjusting temperature set points and making sure lights aren’t on when no one’s around. Then get expert help from a service and product provider who can take you a step further.

ENERGY ASSESSMENTSThe assessment is customized to your building size and business needs and includes a review of the facility’s operating equipment and systems. At the end of the assessment you’ll receive a customized report that equips your business with a prioritized, actionable plan for saving energy and reducing operating costs. Each recommendation includes estimated energy and cost savings, project cost, potential rebates and simple payback. In addition to the report and recommendations, an energy adviser will continue to provide technical assistance as you complete your energy efficiency projects.

Incentives

n Equipment rebates – The energy assessment report connects customers to prescriptive and custom rebates as outlined in the nonresidential equipment programs.

n Enhanced incentives – Bonus rebates are available when multiple projects are completed.

n Direct-install measures for small businesses – Gain immediate cost savings. Our energy specialist may install energy efficiency measures at no cost, as appropriate.

Express Building Tune-Up

This service targets buildings that can achieve energy savings through simple control strategies and by servicing mechanical equipment. It is a systematic process of achieving savings through system tuning on existing equipment to produce low-cost energy savings. Participating buildings typically are less than 100,000 square feet, have rooftop HVAC units or smaller central chillers and boilers. This service does not require a building to have an energy management system. The goal of an Express Building Tune-Up is to find easy-to-fix items that are quick to implement and will enhance building performance and reduce energy consumption. Examples of corrective measures include:

– Adjusting schedules and setpoints – Rooftop unit maintenance and adjustments – Boiler tune-ups – Steam trap and valve repair

Retrocommissioning

This service targets larger and more complex commercial buildings and can achieve greater results over standard system tuning. Improved results are achieved by performing a holistic, systematic and intensive study of the building systems, leveraging the building’s existing equipment to produce low-cost energy savings. Participating buildings typically are greater than 100,000 square feet, have a central heating and cooling system, a functional energy management system and are free of major problems requiring costly repairs or replacement of equipment. The goal of traditional retrocommissioning is to enhance existing building systems while increasing safety, comfort and energy performance. Examples of corrective measures include:

– Optimizing economizer and ventilation controls – Improving equipment sequencing and scheduling – Optimizing chilled water systems – Improving boiler sequencing and performance

Incentives

MidAmerican Energy will fund 50 percent of the express building tune-up survey or retrocommissioning study, and additional incentives are earned based on energy savings ($0.05/kWh and $0.20/therm) from implemented projects. Incentives are capped at the lesser of:

n 65 percent of total study and implementation cost n $0.20/square foot of building space

Participants in the Retrocommissioning offering are required to have one person become building operator-certified. See Building Operator Certification® sidebar for additional information.

How to get started

Call 800-292-6448 or email [email protected] and let one of our energy advisors assist you with determining which service best meets your building’s needs. You also can complete an online form requesting a callback from an energy advisor to help you get started in enhancing the performance of your building. Visit www.midamericanenergy.com/iowa-CES.

Building Operator Certification

Building Operator Certification is a nationally recognized training and certification program focused on energy-efficient building operations and preventive maintenance procedures. BOC training provides building operators with the skills and knowledge to incorporate energy efficiency practices into their operations and maintenance tasks to reduce energy usage and costs. MidAmerican Energy offers a maximum rebate of $700 to eligible participants ($420 for electric-only customers, $280 for natural gas-only customers). How to apply for rebates

Complete the application found at www.midamericanenergy.com/iowa-bus-forms and return it to MidAmerican Energy along with product specifications, dated invoices and installation date(s). Include the motor manufacturer’s specification sheet with efficiency ratings.

19

VARIABLE SPEED DRIVESA variable speed drive connected to your electric motor regulates the motor speed and torque of the motor-driven equipment to the process requirement, resulting in reduced energy consumption.

Rebates are available for VSDs controlling 1 to 75 horsepower motors driving fans or centrifugal pumps for process applications. VSDs that are integral to the equipment are not eligible for rebates separate from the equipment rebate.

Rebates for VSDs cannot exceed 50 percent of the installed cost (materials and reasonable labor). You will receive the lesser of the rebate amount or 50 percent of installed cost. Installed cost includes contractor labor only and does not include internal labor.

Variable speed drive benefits

n Reduced energy costs n Improved plant efficiency and load factor n Precise control of process flow and pressure n Bypass capability when required

Variable Speed DrivesEQUIPMENT REBATE

Variable Speed Drives $60 per HP of motor driven

Important note before purchasing or installing a VSD:

Modern variable speed drives contain integrated protective circuitry that can shut down the drive when it senses the input voltage is too low or too high, loss of a phase (e.g., unbalance) or the motor is overloaded. The typical input voltage tolerance is +/- 10 percent, but some manufacturers offer drives with wider input voltage ranges. Some variable speed drive applications may require an inverter duty-rated motor, particularly if the motor will operate at very low speeds; a motor’s internal cooling fan is less effective at low speeds. Work with your vendor to purchase a drive that is compatible with the power quality and motors in your facility.

Custom Equipment

Examples of VSD projects that may qualify under Nonresidential Equipment Custom Systems:

n Process fan or centrifugal pump applications where the controlled motor exceeds 75 HP

CURTAILMENTThe EnergyAdvantage® Curtailment program is designed to allow MidAmerican Energy’s large commercial and industrial customers in Iowa to receive financial incentives for reducing peak electrical demand.

The Curtailment program is designed to help manage demand for electricity June through September, typically the hottest months of the year.

n Your MidAmerican Energy key account manager contacts your company to warn you of potential peak periods two to 12 hours before actual events may begin.

n During curtailment events, you must reduce your company’s use of electricity supplied by MidAmerican Energy by your contract amount (minimum contract 250 kW). This reduction can be achieved by:

– Limiting air conditioning – Reducing or shifting the operation of other equipment – Using auxiliary on-site electrical generation

Curtailment incentives are based on the contracted kW reduced during peak periods and are payable as rebates at the end of the peak energy season following, and based on, performance analysis.

Note: For residential SummerSaverSM information, see the For Your Home booklet, Page 9.

Questions about Curtailment?

Contact your MidAmerican Energy key account manager, email [email protected] or call 866-584-0871 for additional information. You also may visit our website at www.midamericanenergy.com/curtailment.

Participation is limited and is available on a first-come, first-served basis.

QUALIFICATIONS AND CONDITIONS

n Participants must be nonresidential customers (commercial or industrial) with facilities located in MidAmerican Energy Company’s Iowa service territory.

n MidAmerican Energy Company must directly provide the primary electricity or natural gas to the equipment at the facility for which the rebate is being paid.

n Transportation gas customers with daily metering are ineligible for natural gas incentives. However, customers with monthly metering under the Monthly Metered Transportation Service natural gas tariff are eligible for natural gas incentives.

n Qualifying equipment must be new, installed on the premises and must not be purchased for resale.

n Customers are responsible for ensuring that the equipment installed for these programs meets all applicable codes, standards and regulatory requirements.

n Equipment must be installed and operating prior to submission of final rebate application, except for motors purchased for spare inventory. Installations must meet the standards referenced in the individual program guidelines.

n Customers may not receive custom rebates in lieu of prescriptive rebates.

n Custom projects require preapproval by MidAmerican Energy Company and no equipment can be purchased or any work initiated prior to receiving a formal preapproval letter. Projects must be completed within six months of preapproval. All custom projects must be deemed cost-effective by MidAmerican Energy Company in order to be eligible for a rebate.

n For custom projects, the rebates for electric projects will be $0.08 - $0.12 per kWh of first year savings. The rebates for natural gas projects will be $2 per therm of first year savings. Customers will receive the lesser of the calculated custom rebate or 50 percent of the eligible project cost, and the rebate may not reduce the simple payback for the project to fewer than two years.

n For prescriptive rebates, the rebate payment cannot exceed 50 percent of the installed cost (reasonable labor and material/equipment - reasonableness to be determined by MidAmerican Energy Company). Installed cost includes contractor labor only and does not include internal labor.

n Prescriptive rebates will be based on the rebate schedule in effect on the date of dealer invoice for the equipment/material purchased.

n Prescriptive rebate applications must be postmarked within six months of dealer invoice, or by Dec. 31, 2018, whichever comes first, for the equipment/material purchased. Some exceptions apply for new construction, multiyear or multiphase projects. For these types of projects, preauthorization for the exception must be obtained by the customer from MidAmerican Energy Company. Rebate applications received after Dec. 31, 2018, will not be eligible for rebates.

n Rebate checks will be issued to the building owner or account holder.

n Itemized and dated invoices from the contractor must accompany equipment applications. Specification sheets also are required for all equipment. Applications must be completed in full; incomplete applications will delay processing and may be returned. Applications for equipment must include the equipment manufacturer’s name, model/serial number, efficiency rating and the quantity of high-efficiency equipment installed.

n All project installations with rebates exceeding $20,000 will be reviewed for on-site verification of installation by MidAmerican Energy Company or its agent prior to issuance of rebate.

n Allow 4-6 weeks for rebate processing, excluding on-site verification time, if needed.

n Rebates may be subject to income tax. Consult your tax advisor for more information.

n MidAmerican Energy Company reserves the right to conduct on-site verification of equipment installation, install metering devices on new equipment, and to verify sales receipts and other project documentation at any time before or after issuing a rebate.

n MidAmerican Energy Company does not endorse any particular manufacturer, product or system design in promoting this incentive program. Listing a product does not constitute an endorsement, nor does it imply that unlisted products are defective in any way.

n MidAmerican Energy Company does not guarantee that installation and operation of energy-efficient equipment will result in reduced usage or in cost savings. The manner in which a customer uses and maintains energy-efficient equipment affects potential cost savings.

n MidAmerican Energy Company makes no warranties, expressed or implied, with respect to any equipment purchased or installed, including, but not limited to, any warranty of merchantability or fitness for a particular purpose.

n In no event shall MidAmerican Energy Company be held liable for any incidental or consequential damages or injuries resulting from defective equipment or installation.

n Additional program-specific qualifications are shown on individual program pages and rebate applications.

n The programs are effective Jan. 1, 2018, through Dec. 31, 2018, unless otherwise noted, and are subject to periodic review by MidAmerican Energy Company, and MidAmerican Energy Company reserves the right to modify or end these programs at any time.
