Kimberly C. Driggins is the Director of Strategic Planning in the City of Detroit’s Planning and DevelopmentDepartment.Inthiscapacity,she is responsible for developing several citywideplanninginitiativesincluding:updatedcomprehensive plan, open space plan, historic preservation plan, and an arts and culture plan.

PriortojoiningtheCityofDetroit,Ms.DrigginsworkedfortheDistrictofColumbia’sOfficeof Planning for seven years, as the Associate Director for Citywide Planning. She was responsible for managing planning studies in severalareasincluding:housing,economicdevelopment, transportation, facilities and capital improvement planning.

Inaddition,Ms.Drigginsservedastheprojectmanager for several creative placemaking initiativesincluding;TemporaryUrbanismprogram, Kresge Foundation and ArtPlace grants,andtheThirdPlaceinitiative.

Ms.Drigginsbeganhercareerasaconsultantworking on real estate, affordable housing, and neighborhood revitalization projects in the privateandnon-profitsectors.ShereceivedaMasterofPublicPolicy(MPP)degreefromtheUniversityofChicagoandaBachelorofArtsdegree, with highest honors, in political science fromHamptonUniversity.

Mostrecently,Ms.DrigginswasaLoebFellow(2016)atHarvardUniversity’sGraduateSchoolof Design; where she explored the intersection of design, civic engagement and creative placemaking through the lens of equity and inclusion.

Mr.Lee’splanningandurbandesignprojectsinclude master plans for Pittsburgh’s Hill District, the award winning houses at Dutch Point in Hartford, Connecticut and a visioning study for the future of the Ruggles StreetCorridorinRoxbury’sMadisonParkneighborhood.

Current projects under his direction include the DewittCommunityCenter,TheClarion,amixeduseapartmentbuildinginBoston,thedesignofnewMDOTrailstationsatNorthamptonandGreenfield,MA.andthedesignofa25storyofficeandresidentialtowerinRoxbury’sDudleySquare.

Mr.LeeservedasPresidentoftheBostonSociety of Architects in 1992. He was the recipientoftheBostonSocietyofArchitects’Year 2000 Award of Honor.

Mr.Leelecturesthroughoutthecountryandserves on numerous professional panels and designjuriesincludingthe2016NationalAmericanInstituteofArchitectsHousingAwardsJuryandAIA/HUDSecretary’sAwardsJury.

WillettMossisafoundingpartnerofCMGLandscapeArchitecture,aFellowoftheAmerican Academy in Rome, and a landscape architect of public and institutional landscapes. Mr.Moss’workreflectshisrangeofinterestswith a consistent focus on landscapes of broad value and public appeal.

His project experience includes community-based design, sustainable urban systems, planning rooted in ecological understanding, and making historic resources relevant today.

Some of his noteworthy projects are the transformationofMintPlaza,MarinCountryDaySchool,SunnylandsAnnenbergEstate,andtheUCBerkeleyLowerSproulPlaza.

He designs by rapidly representing spaces anddefininglandscapeexperiences.ForMrMoss,goodpublicspaceshaveclearpurpose,whether symbolic or utilitarian, and contribute to community identity as memorable additions to the landscape. He creates art and research focused on the intersection of public landscape, bodily experience, and collective memory, based on a longstanding appreciation for richly textured and varied environments.

Scot Spencer is Associate Director for Advocacy andInfluenceatTheAnnieE.CaseyFoundation.Inthisrole,hesupportsanationalportfolioof work to advance place based policies, practices and strategies which aim to afford greater opportunities for children, families and communities to succeed. He also coordinates a portfolio of local advocacy work in support ofCasey’shometowneffortsinBaltimore.From2002to2010,Mr.SpencerwasManagerofBaltimoreRelationsatCaseywheretheFoundation’sworkhasbeenfocusedontheEastBaltimorerevitalizationefforttostrengthencommunity and economic development in an historic working class neighborhood.

Mr.Spencer’spreviousworkincludes:transportationadvocacywiththeEnvironmentalDefense Fund; community development in BaltimoreandAlbany,NY;architecturalpracticein upstate New York and alumni relations.

HecurrentlychairstheboardofSmartGrowthAmerica and serves on the boards of Center Stage, the Orton Family Foundation, the Funders’NetworkforSmartGrowthandLivableCommunities, Rail-Volution, the Center for CommunityProgressandtheCentralMarylandTransportationAlliance.InBaltimore,ScotservesontheBaltimoreCommunityFoundation’sneighborhoods committee and served as co-chair oftheOpportunityCollaborative,Baltimore’sHUDfundedSustainableCommunitiesInitiativesteering committee.

The Rudy Bruner AwardAmerican cities embody our nation’s greatest triumphs and most daunting challenges. At their best they showcase the rich diversity, cultural achievement, and democratic values that characterize the American spirit. At their worst theyreflectourcountry’smostpersistentsocialills – economic disparity, hopelessness, neglect and abandonment. Yet there are those places that are developed with such vision and imagination that they transform urban problems into creative solutions.Byrecognizingtheseextraordinaryplaces, the Rudy Bruner Award (RBA) seeks to promote fresh and innovative thinking about cities, and to encourage us all to demand excellence in our urban environments.

Excellenceexistsineverycity.Itcanbefoundin downtowns, neighborhoods, in small cities and largeones.ThepurposeoftheAwardistodiscover places that embody economic, and envi-ronmental factors.

Theseplacesoftentranscendtheboundariesbetween architecture, urban design, and planning.Theyarebornthroughprocessesoftransformation – the renewal of something old, or the creation of something new that resonates in thehistoryofcommunitylife.Theseextraordinaryplaces enrich the quality of the urban experience, and serve as models for placemaking in cities across the country.

Eligibility/Who May Apply• The project must be a real place, not just a plan or program. Programs alone will not be considered.

•Sincesitevisitsareintegraltotheaward process, the project must have been in operationforasufficientamountoftime to demonstrate success.

•Theprojectmustbelocatedinthe contiguous 48 states.Itisnotfeasibleto conduct site visits at international locations or in Alaska or Hawaii.

•Therearenodistinctcategories.Projects may include any type of place which makes a positive contribution to the urban environment.

• Urbanenvironmentisbroadlydefinedto include incorporated cities, towns, or villages; a neighborhood within a city; an urban county; or anofficiallyrecognizedregionmadeupoftwo or more cities.

•Applicationsmaybeinitiatedbyanypersonwho has been involved in the planning, development or operation of a project.

•PreviousapplicantsandHonorableMention winners may re-apply. Previous winners are not eligible. Please do not apply more than three times.

The Selection Process

Establishedin1987,theRudy Bruner Award recognizesoneGoldMedalWinnerandfourSilverMedalwinnersineachbiennialcycle.TheRudy Bruner Award is distinguished from other award programs by its broad eligibility criteria; the multi-disciplinary Selection Committee; and the detailed on-siteevaluationofeachfinalist.Eachawardcycleis documented in a book, which includes in-depth case studies of the winners and a distillation of the SelectionCommitteediscussion.ThepublicationsareavailablefromtheBrunerFoundation.TheFoundation does not restrict the kinds of projects thatmayapply.Urbanexcellenceisadynamicand changing concept, and the Award is enriched by a diversity of applications. Rudy Bruner Award winners are not selected through an established set of criteria. Rather, the issues emerge from the Selection Committee discussion of the applications.
