Dining
New RochelleYou know a restaurant has a winning formula
when demand drives additional locations. The
first Coromandel opened in Darien, Connecticut,
in 2000, and the second, in New Rochelle, came just
one year later; since then, the owners have added
four other locations, all in Connecticut. Hailing
from Kerala, in Southern India on the Coromandel
Coast, the owners decided to offer South Indian
cuisine in addition to the North Indian mainstays
found at most Indian restaurants.
That’s why the menu includes tandoori chick-
en, rogan josh, chicken tikka masala, lamb saag,
biryani, and garlic naan, plus South Indian spe-
cialties like masala dosa (a rice crêpe stuffed with
spiced potatoes and peas, served with sambhar
and coconut chutney), Kerala fish curry, and tawa
ruyyali (shrimp and crab meat with onion, to-
mato, and spices). Coromandel also offers its own
signature dishes, like sham savera (cottage cheese
and spinach dumplings with curried tomato-hon-
ey sauce) and calamari Coromandel (with onions,
bell peppers, garlic, and curry leaves).
To match the vibrant
cuisine, Coromandel sells 10
wines by the glass and 40 by
the bottle, plus 12 cocktails.
The carpeted, contempo-
rary-style dining room, with
white-tablecloth-covered ta-
bles, features royal blue and
red walls, plus blue, red, green, and yellow hanging
lights. The large restaurant, which prepares food for
takeout and delivery (to New Rochelle, Pelham, and
Larchmont), has a banquet hall that can accommo-
date 110 people.30 Division St, New Rochelle (914) 235-8390;

Classic RestaurantsThese restaurants have been consistently good for so long, they’ve
inadvertently been taken for granted. It’s time they got their due. By Dina Cheney
HarrisonCozy and warm, Emilio is located in a charming Colonial-style
white house with a front porch and green shutters, situated on a
side street with a private parking lot. Inside, multiple carpeted
dining rooms include white-tablecloth-covered tables and red-and-
yellow walls adorned with copper-pot planters.
At Emilio, which opened in 1979, pasta is the star—and it’s
no surprise why. After all, Lidia, the 81-year-old mother of owner
Sergio Brasesco, makes several varieties every day. All the authen-
tic regional-Italian dishes on the menu change seasonally (and are
never repeated), with one exception: the panzarotti, small ravi-
oli stuffed with ricotta and Swiss chard, served in a walnut cream
sauce. Other than the pastas, standouts include the colorful anti-
pasto table (with fare such as fried zucchini flowers, fresh figs with
Burrata and prosciutto, and wild mushrooms sautéed with mint and
shallots). The desserts, with the exception of the gelato, are made
in-house. Current choices include raspberry crostata with white-
chocolate raspberry sorbet; Emilio’s version of the Ring Ding (choc-
olate sponge cake filled with vanilla pastry cream, covered with
melted milk chocolate); Key lime custard pie; and mini Napoleons
(with vanilla pastry cream, fresh raspberries, and crème anglaise).
Like the food offerings, the extensive wine list (with 190 labels,
16 available by the glass or quartino) constantly changes and in-
cludes some esoteric varieties. Prices range from $8 to $30 per glass
and $24 to $2,500 per bottle. Emilio hosts convivial monthly wine
dinners, limited to about 40 guests.
1 Colonial Pl, Harrison (914) 835-3100; www.emilioristorante.com
ChappaquaWith nearly 60,000 bottles (and 5,000 vari-
eties) to choose from, Crabtree’s Kittle
House is a world-class wine destination,
offering both prestigious and sustain-
ably produced labels. Equally noteworthy
is the establishment’s elegant American
farm-to-table fare, such as fluke crudo
with grapefruit, heart of palm, and baby
fennel salad; seared foie gras with Asian
pears, honey sauce, and coriander; veni-
son osso bucco with squash puree, aspar-
agus, and juniper berry sauce; and goat
cheesecake with pear-ginger sorbet and
honey. Dishes feature natural, sustainably
produced ingredients—many from small,
local farmers and producers. The restau-
rant’s website lists purveyors, includ-
ing Hudson Valley Duck Farm, Crown
Maple Syrup, Highland Farms Venison,
and Mobius Fields Farm.
In the main dining room, which fea-
tures plush chairs, whitewashed barn-
siding walls, and natural wood floors,
guests can order à la carte or opt for a chef’s
tasting menu. Meanwhile, in the more ca-
sual Tap Room (with a copper ceiling and
hardwood tables), diners can go for a hot
dog (with Wagyu beef) or sliders (Hudson
Valley grass-fed Angus beef with barbecue
brisket stuffing). Although the fare is relatively modern,
the surroundings are historical and storied.
Built more than 200 years ago, the white
columned structure has had several incar-
nations, including as a farm, school, and
roadhouse. In 1981, the Crabtree family
purchased the place and transformed the
stables into the much-heralded wine cellar
(which can be booked for private events),
turned 14 rooms into guestrooms, and ex-
panded the events operation. A few years
ago, the community banded together to cre-
ate Amy’s Garden, in honor of John’s wife,
Amy Crabtree, who passed away in 2009.
Each Tuesday night during the summer, the
restaurant hosts Sparkle for a Cause events
in the garden with different local charities
and live music, small bites, and sparkling
wine cocktails (30 percent of that evening’s
proceeds are donated).

New restaurants tend to soak up all the attention and glory. Yet, it can be
argued that those who endure are actually more noteworthy; after all, many
restaurants close within their first year of business. That's why we decided
to honor those rare county spots that have stood the test of time—perennial
favorites we visit again and again. Of course, with more than 2,000 restau-
rants in the county, selecting just nine proved particularly daunting. We
can't imagine life without the restaurants on the following pages. They're

Bazaar à GoGo This one-of-a-kind mobile boutique—the county’s first and only fashion truck—was launched by Bedford resi-dent Marion Siegel, founder of home-goods website Hivernage, to showcase Bohemian clothing and acces-sories she discovers in her travels around the country and to Morocco, India, and Thailand. The focus is on leather goods, jewelry, and simple silhouettes in natural fabrics from indie designers.
