Introduc;on This%work%is%inspired%by%Gertrude%Stein's%magnificent%libre;o%on%the%Faust%myth,''Doctor'Faustus'Lights'the'Lights".%%The%saxophone%personifies%and%brings%life%to%the%principal%characters,%delineaBng%the%individuality%of%each%by%stylisBc%means,%while%the%wind%ensemble%establishes%the%atmosphere%Dboth%emoBonal%and%physicalD%and%parBcipates%in%the%acBon%of%the%'plot'%D%even%someBmes%taking%on%the%funcBon%of%chorus.%At%certain%passages,%the%music%arBculates%the%precise%rhythm%of%Stein’s%prose.%My%intenBon%is%to%imbue%the%work%with%an%authenBcally%operaBc%idiom,%together%with%the%theatrical%intensity%inherent%in%the%form:%hence%the%designaBon:%SaxOpera.%%Synopsis (Quotes'from'Gertrude'Stein'in'italics)

"But%Faustus%gloomily%brushes%off%this%vision:%Leave"me"alone..."
