As NDDYG committee chairman I have enjoyed seeing our group continue our work throughout 2017. I hope this newsletter will give you a small insight into some of the things we do to help support local children with Type 1 Diabetes. I would like to thank the hard working members of our committee, whose time, effort and work is given to our group completely voluntarily. In particular I would like to thank Linda Chapman (Birthday Card sender) and former committee members Mark Priestley (Vice Chairman to April 2017) and Sue White for their positive contributions to the group over many years. Pictured above are some of the children and parents who attended the World Diabetes Day UEA Sports Park event held in November 2017. This, along with thirteen other subsidised fun events during 2017 were organised to bring local children of all ages with Type 1 Diabetes and their families together, which is not only a fun event, but is also an opportunity for parents and children to catch up, talk, share T1 care experiences and knowledge, subliminally offering support and reassurance in a relaxed environment. We have a varied range of events planned throughout 2018, some of which are featured below. Full details and booking for these can be found on the separate 'Spring Events' A4 sheet and other flyers with this Newsletter. We will donate funds this year again, to a research project funded by Diabetes UK. We will continue to provide WH Smith voucher rewards to the Jenny Lind Care Diabetes Team and will continue to support the Jenny Lind Diabetes Care Team in what ever way we can. If you want to support us, you can donate funds to us or you may just want to help with our committee - It would be great to hear from any parent of a child with Type 1 Diabetes who wishes to help, bring new ideas and offer support with their time. CHRISTMAS PARTY '17

This event was quickly booked up and proved very popular with all ages.

The younger group donned their harnesses and climbed the 7.5m high climbing wall. Many successfully reaching the top. The second older group tried 'Bouldering'; which is climbing un-harnessed, using hand and leg holds up to a height of 4.5m. Plenty of Chalk Dust required !! This was all followed by a Pitta Bread Pizza, Sweet Potato Fries and plenty of drink.

In December, we held our annual Christmas Party at the Gas Social Club.

There was yet another excellent turn out for our annual Christmas Party. Over 60 children danced the afternoon away to Steve Pizey’s disco, culminating in a visit by Father Christmas with a gift for each child.

Yummy food was provided by our, now regular, catering team, Paul & Gail Howes from The Old Catton Kitchen. The Campbell Family did some gorgeous face painting, bringing lots of colour and sparkles to the party. The Christmas Party is our main fundraising event and we were delighted to raise £1200 through raffle ticket sales and the tombola.

Thank you to everyone who supported this event. Next year is already booked!

Family bowling was a great hit during 2017 and saw our best ever attendance of 46 people.

A great family outing with food for all the children in a newly refurbished bowling alley and restaurant. A good opportunity to come together and share experiences which is what the group is all about. Come and join us this year, suitable for all ages.

BRITISH TRUCK RACING CHAMPIONSHIPS

In September a group of 22 went to the British Truck Racing Championships at Snetterton.

Weighing in at 5 tonne, they have 1000+ horsepower and can accelerate to 100mph as fast as a Porsche 911! Plenty of action and crashes during the full day of racing. A chance to meet drivers and look around the pits. Many took the chance to have a ride on the Red Dragon Monster Truck. The weather could of been better, but a great day.

DINO PARK FAMILY DAY!

AUG2017

In the summer we visited the Dinosaur Park.

A great day out for all the family whatever the weather. Always a very well attended event for ages 3 to 14 as there is so much to do once you are inside.

WORLD DIABETES DAY UEA SPORTS PARK

NOV2017

This event marked World Diabetes Day with the Paediatric Specialist Diabetes nurses and dieticians also voluntarily attending to support the occasion.

Around 37 families joined us on the day to take part in the variety of activities on offer, including climbing wall and gymnastics sessions, badminton, Zumba, new age curling, basketball, soft play, table tennis and the crafts area; with many thanks to the Campbell family who once again triumphed with the fabulous assortment of crafts. It was great to have the presence of the Norfolk Diabetes Trust, with some of its committee members present including Kip Bertram who continues to inspire so many of us.

Andrew Broomhead, the Head of Volunteering within Central Diabetes UK had heard about the success of our youth group and was keen to experience this first hand, he was also present at the sports event on hand to talk to parents and children living with type 1 diabetes.

HIGHLIGHTS FROM SOME OF OUR EVENTS HELD IN 2017/18...

Organised and run by Paul Hill - Diabetes Type 1 Specialist Nurse at Jenny Lind Clinic, this group is for family members of T1 infants, children or young adults. Online and face to face conversation, support and regular meet-ups, because sometimes we all need a pint and a chat. This has recently been attended by a few mums too!

There's dates on the dads group for the next 6 months, you are welcome to join us!

HILLTOP RESIDENTIAL ACTIVITY WEEKEND

JUNE2017

In June 2017, 20 of our children aged 7-17 and 10 volunteers spent a fabulous weekend at Hilltop Outdoor Centre near Sheringham.

It was an amazing experience - the children participated in the climbing wall, pond dipping, air jump (awesomely terrifying!), a muddy obstacle course & orienteering. The Saturday evening culminated in a barbecue and camp fire activities.

For some, it was their first experience staying away from home overnight. The children were able to relax and participate fully, safe in the knowledge that our dedicated and enthusiastic volunteers, including Kris Howell, Paul Hill and Jo Gibbons from the Jenny Lind Diabetes Team, were on hand to support them.

A big thank you to everyone who donated funds, to Hilltop for putting on an excellent weekend, to the volunteers for giving their time so enthusiastically, but most of all, to our wonderful children for being utterly fabulous... An unforgettable weekend!

Hilltop Residential 2018

We had hoped to run another Hilltop Residential in June this year. However, Diabetes UK announced in January 2018 that they are putting all Type 1 residential events on hold at least through 2018 while they work on a “Refresh” of their policies and approach. This means that Diabetes UK will not be providing insurance or running DBS checks for events where children are NOT accompanied by their parent/guardian - namely the residential. All other activities where children ARE accompanied by their parent/guardian remain unaffected.

We shall keep you informed of developments and can only express our disappointment that we won’t be revisiting Hilltop in 2018 for a residential weekend, however, look out for details of a Family Day at Hilltop in September - Details TBC during this summer.

In May 2017, we ran an event for under 7's and Toddlers at Tots Town, Hethersett.

The children had great fun role playing in the child sized town, visiting the cafe, shoe shop, hairdressers, doctors surgery and more. It was lovely to see the children get on well, enjoy lunch and for the parents to chat and share experiences.

MAY2017

Maria Suffolk and Claire Hough have joined us in 2017.

A note from Claire - Hi, my name is Claire Hough and I have recently become a member of the committee. My daughter Madison age 8 is Type 1. I am very proud to be part of this amazing group and hope to meet you all soon at some of the fantastic events we organise. We welcome Maria and Claire and look forward to seeing their positive contributions to the group in 2018. If you would like to help or join our committee. Please do not hesitate to get in touch.

On Saturday 10th February 2018 100 avid Harry Potter fans from our group of T1 families (both adult and children alike!) had a most Wanderful time to Warner Bros Studios The Making of Harry Potter Tour.

We saw and experienced Hogwarts, The Great Hall, The Forbidden Forest, Hagrid's House, Diagon Alley, Professor Dumbledore's Headmasters office, Hogwarts Express and Platform 9 and 3/4. Some even soared through the sky on magic broomsticks, practiced their wand skills and sampled the Butter Beer! A magical day all round.

CHRIS MILLIGAN CHARITYGOLF TOURNAMENT

Pictured above from left to right: James Cooper and Toby Forster - Norwich Round Table, Mark Preistley and Fen Littleboy - NDDYG

Norwich Round Table, chaired by Toby Forster during 2017 raised £2,300 for NDDYG. Norwich Round Table raised their funds from a Charity Ball held in March 2017 which was also supported by two tables from members of NDDYG and also from an annual Round Table Father Christmas Float before Christmas 2016.

A Music Night held by Meadoway Chapel in Hellesdon raised £610.00. Andy Dodds and Fen Littleboy were pleased to be asked to host the event and raise awareness of NDDYG. It was a well-attended and enjoyable evening.

Thank you to Chris Milligan, whose daughter has Type 1 Diabetes, for his kind donation of £3,580.00 raised for a Golf Tournament Day. Some of this money has funded the Snetterton Truck Racing Day 2017, WDD Day UEA Sports Park event 2017 and 80% of the Harry Potter Trip in Feb 2018. Also thank you to his main sponsor MKM, without whom, Chris said he would never be able to do such an event.
