2017-18 Student Growth Portfolio
District Portfolio Leads
Keely Potter, Director of Teacher Effectiveness, TDoE
§ To communicate the structural and content-specific revisions made to the 2017-18 student growth portfolios
§ To explain the purpose of the changes
§ To demonstrate how to upload and score work samples
Purpose of Webinar
4
§ Student growth portfolio models provide a holistic, meaningful picture of the value a teacher adds to his/her students using work already happening in the classroom
§ The right work – Student centered – Teacher developed – Flexible assessment – Professional learning and growth – Peer reviewed by content specialists – Correlated with state evaluation models
Why a student growth portfolio model?
5
§ Purposeful collection of student work organized into evidence collections that demonstrate student growth within the state standards.
§ Uses a scoring guide that includes the levels of performance for various standards.
§ Contains student work from two points in time. § Student work at varying levels (emerging, proficient,
advanced).
What is a student growth portfolio model?
6
Purposeful sampling is the process of choosing student work artifacts for inclusion in the evidence collections as a formal part of the evaluation process.
What is purposeful sampling?
7
§ Increase accuracy by focusing solely on the scoring of student work and then allowing the system to calculate growth scores and teacher effectiveness indicator result
§ Focus on capturing teacher feedback and reflections on student work – not just the score
§ Increase efficiency and reduce bias in sampling by focusing on scoring student work alone
Why a new process?
9
§ Fine Arts – Visual Arts – Music – Dance – Theater
§ Physical Education (K-5; 6-8 optional) § Pre-K § Kindergarten § Grade 1 § CTE – Work Based Learning (pilot) § World Language
Student Growth Grades and Subjects
10
§ Structure of the portfolio – Contains evidence collections – one for each domain
– Each evidence collection contains two assessments (Point A and Point B) that assess the same GLE/CLEs
– Each assessment has 3 differentiated samples of work (emerging, proficient, advanced) that are representative of teacher’s course load and student population (purposeful)
§ Teachers must upload a context/narrative form with each student sample indicating which domain and GLE/CLE is being assessed
Submission of the Student Samples
11
§ Scoring Rubrics – Two levels have been added to each scoring rubric to capture growth beyond
levels 4 and 5 (except World Languages) – Teachers must score the same GLE/CLE for both the Point A and Point B
assessments of a given evidence collection § Consensus Scoring Process using Educopia
– Teachers upload and then rate each student sample – Rating consists of tagging evidence and feedback within the actual work
samples and entering scores for each sample – Once all students are scored for a given assessment, the teacher may submit
the work for Peer Review – Peer reviewers will also tag and score each student work sample per
assessment – Teachers and peer reviewers will only score the student work. There is NO
calculation of student growth required by the teacher or peer reviewer.
Scoring of Submissions
12
§ Growth Score Reporting – Once all peer reviewers have completed scoring, the
student growth score for each evidence collection will be calculated by the Educopia system
– Then, the Teacher Effectiveness rating will be calculated across all of the student growth scores
§ Teachers will be notified when growth scores are available to view within the Educopia system
§ Growth scores will be exported to the state
Growth Scores
13
§ The difference between the Point A and Point B assessments is calculated for each student to obtain an individual student growth score
§ The average of all 3 individual growth scores is calculated
§ The average is applied towards the Growth Score ranges to determine the Growth Score (level) for the collection
Calculation of Growth Scores
§ Level 1 – Zero or negative growth
§ Level 2 – Less than 1 level growth
§ Level 3 – 1 level growth (but less than
2) § Level 4
– 2 levels growth (but less than 3)
§ Level 5 – 3 or more levels of growth
14
§ The average of all evidence collection Growth Score levels is calculated
§ The average is applied towards the Teacher Effectiveness ranges to determine the Teacher Effectiveness rating for the teacher
Calculation of Teacher Effectiveness
§ Level 1 – 1.00-1.79
§ Level 2 – 1.80-2.59
§ Level 3 – 2.60-3.39
§ Level 4 – 3.40-4.19
§ Level 5 – 4.20-5.00
15
§ Total collections to submit: 4 – ELA
• Literature/Narrative • Informational
– Math • Counting and Cardinality • Geometry or Measurement and Data
§ Each ELA collection has three options and teachers must select the same option for the Point A and the Point B.
Pre-Kindergarten
17
§ Total collections to submit: 4 – ELA
• Literature/Narrative • Informational
– Math • Counting and Cardinality • Operations and Algebraic Thinking
§ Each ELA collection has three options and teachers must select the same option for the Point A and the Point B.
Kindergarten
18
§ Total collections to submit: 4 – ELA
• Literature/Narrative • Informational
– Math • Operations and Algebraic Thinking • Number and Operations Base Ten
§ Each ELA collection has three options and teachers must select the same option for the Point A and the Point B.
Grade 1
19
§ Total collections to submit: 4 – Four evidence collections for the Perform domain (psycho-motor) – Two students’ work for both the Point A and Point B should be
submitted for each performance level (emerging, proficient, and advanced) for each evidence collection
– Teachers must assess the same GLE/CLEs for the Point A and Point B for a given evidence collection
Physical Education (Grades K-5; 6-8)
20
§ Language Change: – Type 1 is now referred to as a “Group Sample” – Type 2 is now referred to as a “Differentiated Sample”
§ Evidence collections are generically labeled to give teachers flexibility in selecting at least 3 of 4 domains.
§ Teachers must specify which domain they are submitting for a given evidence collection through the Context Form
§ Teachers must select a specific domain for each evidence collection and score the same GLE/CLEs for the Point A and Point B in that evidence collection
Fine Arts
21
§ Total collections to submit: 1 – Work Based Learning
§ Teachers will upload 3 samples for the Early and Late Assessments and score the work in Educopia
§ Teachers must indicate which standards are being assessed in the Context Form
§ Teachers must score at least one standard from each domain – Career Knowledge and Navigation Skills – 21st Century Learning and Innovation Skills – Personal and Social Skills
§ The same standards should be scored in both the Early and Late Assessments
