Introduction
The youth in America is highly uneducated about the type of food they
are putting into their bodies. Most kids are educated enough to read a label
and say there are X amount of calories in an item of food but very few knows
what that means. This lack of education leads to instances in teen and adult
years where certain unhealthy diets are used to try to lose weight. These
diets may seem like they work at rst, weight is lost, but your body can
become etremely malnourished and once the diet ends the weight is
immediately put back on.
There are many factors that contribute to weight loss like what gender
you are, your stress levels and also how you go about losing weight. These
factors should all be covered in health class and students should know all
about them, but health classes aren!t e"ective in getting all this information
across. This is due to the lack of time health classes have in teaching, for
instance, when I was in elementary and middle school, my health class was
once every other week and that #ust is not good enough for smaller kids to
learn and retain information. My pro#ect will focus on reforming health class
education so students will learn, and be able to retain and use the necessary
information to live healthy lifestyles.
I believe that with the proper education at a young age about the type
of food they consume and the motivation for kids to want to be on a team
and live an active lifestyle, they can develop early, healthy, habits that could

translate to teen and adulthood. This would help to prevent obesity in
America in the future generations to come.
My target audience for this pro#ect would be those sitting in school
board positions that have the ability to reform the health classes in America.
$urther more individual county school boards that could impact their health
classes on a local level, for eample the %t &ohns county school board, in
&acksonville $', where I received my poor health education because I have a
personal eperience with their health class system is and I know it needs to
be improved. Improvements come from changing how the students learn(
teaching the course like any other math or science course, by having class
everyday, students will be able to learn and retain the information.

The sources found in the library were hard to come by because of how
specic my topic is. *ducation of nutrition and eercise at an early age is a
devolving topic and has yet to have many books written about it. I did nd
information on eercise and dieting that was general information.
I have found the Internet to be the best source to use, as all the
information is easier to locate and has more up to date information on my
topic. The sources I found all had very similar messages to lose weight
because they all said in order to lose weight eercise and a healthy diet are
crucial. The di"erences in each source come from what else to do on top of a
healthy diet and eercise. $or eample in Ann +. hitaker and &ames Annesi

scholarly peer reviewed paper an eperiment where people who are
attempting to lose weight are put on a diet and eercise regime but the ones
who are more successful in losing weight have a high sense of body
satisfaction and reduced stress -/01. This is showing how eercise and diet
are the main components of losing weight but there are other eternal
factors that can increase or decrease the process of weight loss. &ames also
believes strongly in a proper diet consisting of fruits and vegetables because
it isn!t #ust about eating less food its about eating the right kind of food -21.
$ruits and vegetables are naturally low in calories but rich in vitamins and
nutrients, which help your body, get the nutrition it needs to survive, perform
properly, and be healthy, by preventing diseases, which is why they are
considered so healthy. The reason eating cookies is bad for you is because
they are high in calories but low in nutrients and vitamins, so your body
doesn!t get what it needs from the food causing you to be hungry even
faster, the same reason if you eat an apple you will be full for a longer time
then if you eat the same amount of chocolate.
*ercise and eating healthy are key to losing weight but &itendra
3iple took it one step further in her scholarly peer reviewed article where she
reviewed the level of education of people who worked in a hospital and the
obesity of their household -21. The hospital was chosen because it was able
to provide persons from all educational levels as sub#ects for the test with
#anitors being the low, nurses and secretary!s in the middle and doctors
having received the highest education. The eperiment wasn!t seeing who

had received the most education in the area of what it re4uires to have and
maintain a healthy body but rather overall education. 5aturally however the
doctors had received education in this sub#ect due to their #ob as well as the
nurses on a smaller level, but the custodians had received minimal education
on this sub#ect. The results of this eperiment followed eactly what you
might epect, the healthiest families belonging to the doctors and the poorer
families having more obese members in their family. 6tefan Adrian Martin,
and Monica Tarcea collaborated on a pro#ect that highlighted the inade4uate
education among high school student athletes. It mentioned the lack of
education leading to the diets of these athletes not meeting the
re4uirements of a high stress training regimen they were on. The remaining
sources by Ming 7u, Minue %hen, 8hen4iu %un, and A. % 3eacock, were all
highlighting using di"erent periments and studies, the imprtace of eercise
and healthy eating to in order to stay healthy.
Interview
I interviewed Austin Teall, a student here at $lorida %tate 9niversity
and current player on the $%9 club ice hockey team. I decided to interview
him because he is a very knowledgeable man when it comes to eating
healthy, as well as he being a student in eercise science. I epected to gain
insightful knowledge about what happens as your body eercises and what
di"erent foods do to an eercising body. I asked him to help eplain what
food is and how it is broken down and the di"erent classications or the si

categories, +arbohydrates, 'ipids, 3roteins, :itamins, Minerals, and ater, he
provided were especially helpful because my lack of knowledge proves there
is a huge gap in what students should know. I also asked about e;cient ways
to lose weight and his response was very helpful. hen asked if eercising or
eating healthy food was more important to losing weight Austin said, Meaning that you
cannot epect any weight loss when you feed your body #unk food. This
interview really helped me to back my problem and solution to the issue of
obesity, holding parents more responsible and getting kids to eercise is a
viable solution to help. The importance of both eercise and eating healthy
were highlighted. Mr. Teall left out education in his claim for kids to lose
weight and I believe this is because he has already had the education and
knows everything that a health class should teach because of his ma#or
therefore he would not see the importance of it.
+onclusion
As a species we are very intelligent and the feats we have
accomplished are incredible. e as individuals can do so much with our lives,
but we need the proper education, an engineer wasn!t born designing cars,
he was educated and used his knowledge to do so. e need to begin
education at an early age of why foods are bad, not #ust that foods are bad.

9nderstanding of the topic will provide the basic grounds for developing into
healthier adults. %ince children are so undereducated about nutritional
information, and eercise information, the health class should be revamped
to include a more comprehensive program for students including this
information along with the other information already included in health
classes.
?riginally I wanted this pro#ect to be aimed at providing government
incentives to promote healthier lifestyles by Americans, however I now
believe that the proper way to achieve a healthier country is to hit the local
governments. @y implementing a school health program for students to take
that is similar to that of a math or science class, students will be able to
learn more and also retain more important information that they otherwise
wouldn!t have access too.
