Mike Lynn —SES Mid Atlantic
Mike Lynn is a graduate of Virginia Tech and a LPSS. He is also a licensed operator, in-staller and OSE. Mike is the president and co-owner of SES Mid Atlantic, a design-build operate sewage system company. Mike also owns a private utility company that owns and operates decentralized water and sewer systems.

Pamela Pruett— Environmental Systems Consulting, LLC
After graduating Tech, she worked as a chemist and laboratory manager for a private envi-ronmental laboratory. She also worked as a part time operator at large wastewater treat-ment plants.
Five years later, Pam went to work for Fairfax County Health Department. During that time she worked in the On Site Sewage and Water Section and on the Lead Poisoning Task Force. Pam also attended and completed the University of North Carolina—Chapel Hill Management Academy for Public Health.
Pam worked for the Health Department for 16 years and ultimately headed up the Alterna-tive Sewage Systems program in Fairfax County.
Pam is a Licensed Alternative Onsite System Evaluator, a Licensed Alternative Onsite Sys-tem Operator and currently works for Environmental Systems Consulting, LLC. Pam also teaches wastewater courses for the Engineering & Surveying Institute in Chantilly, VA.

Reed Johnson—Orenco Systems Inc.
Reed Johnson is an Area Sales Manager with Orenco Systems®, Inc., a wastewater equip-
ment-manufacturing firm based in Sutherlin, Oregon. In this role, he works closely with
customers to provide support, training, and technical expertise. His operational area in-
cludes the states of Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, and
Delaware. Reed has been with Orenco since 2008. Prior to this, he gained a wealth of expe-
rience in the wastewater industry, including six years with the City County Service Author-
ity Virginia and seven years with ITT Flowtronex. He also has an extensive background in
pumps and pump control systems. Reed has an Associate of Science degree in electrical
technology and is a Master Electrician in the State of Virginia.
Marcia J. Degen, Ph.D., P.E.—VDH
Marcia Degen has a B.S. in Biology, a Master’s degree in Environmental Sciences and En-
gineering, and a Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering, all from Virginia Tech. She is also a
licensed Virginia professional engineer. Dr. Degen’s Ph.D. research was in onsite
wastewater disposal systems, specifically looking at the effect of several variables on the in
-ground denitrification rate.
Dr. Degen’s career has involved consulting and teaching at the community college level,
but has primarily has been with state government starting as a water permit writer at DEQ
and then moving to VDH’s Division of Wastewater Engineering and Office of Environmen-
tal Health Services. She is currently the Technical Services Manager for the Onsite Sewage
and Water Division.
VOWRA is pleased to have participation from the NC State
University Soil Science Extension Onsite Wastewater Training this
year to bring you some new trainings.
The Onsite Wastewater Training Program has been a key component
of Soil Science Extension at NC State University for 30 years. While
primarily focused on the needs of the citizens of North Carolina, we
have welcomed workshop participants from all over the United
States. The program offers about 40 workshops each year on septic
system installation, operation and maintenance, design, and soils.
Soil Science Extension is also home to the following North Carolina
certification schools, required by the NC Departments of Environ-
mental Quality (DEQ) and Health and Human Services (DHHS):

Colin Bishop — President of ANUA
Colin Bishop is President of Anua – a company that provides a variety of sustainable
Clean Water and Clean Air solutions that can be integrated to simplify life and complement
the natural environment. Colin is the Chief Health Inspector over food safety for the City
of Woodville Texas Health Department. He is a Registered Sanitarian in Arizona, Louisi-
ana, Ohio, Texas, and West Virginia. He is a Registered Environmental Health Specialist
through the National Environmental Health Association. He earned a B.S.-Zoology from
Brigham Young University.

Chloe Greenberg — Master Student Virginia Tech
Chloe Greenberg is a Master's student in Virginia Tech's Department of Civil and Environ-mental Engineering. She received her Bachelor's degree from Washington University in St. Louis in Chemical Engineering. Before entering graduate school she worked as a consult-ant engineer to drinking water and wastewater utilities in New England with Tighe & Bond.
Johnathan Godfrey — North Carolina State University
Jonathan Godfrey, BS, MExtED, is an Extension Associate and the Director of the On Site
Wastewater Training Program, North Carolina State University, Raleigh. The program
offers approximately 40 workshops per year on onsite wastewater system installation, oper-
ation and maintenance, design, and soils. The program includes five licensing certification
schools including On Site System Operator, Installer, and Time-of-Sale inspections. Jona-
than is a North Carolina Registered Environmental Health Specialist and holds NC certifi-
cations as Level IV Subsurface Wastewater Operator and Wastewater System Installer, and
Wastewater Point of Sale Inspector.

Jesten D. Brenner, P.E., has worked as an engineer for Orenco Systems, Inc., since 2012.
He earned a degree in Civil Engineering from the Oregon Institute of Technology in 2010,
then began his career as a design engineer for several private companies. At Orenco, Jesten
works with distributors, designers, engineers, and regulators on commercial onsite
wastewater treatment systems in the Eastern region of the United States. In addition to
providing engineering and technical support services, Jesten offers trainings on commercial
systems and makes presentations at regional conferences.
He is a licensed professional engineer in the state of California.

Jim Bell —Bio-Microbics
James A. Bell, Executive Vice President of Bio-Microbics, holds an M.S. in Sanitary Engi-
neering from the University of Missouri and a Master of Business Administration (MBA)
from the University of Kansas, and a B.S. in Civil Engineering from the University of Mis-
souri in Rolla, Missouri. Mr. Bell has worked for 35 years as a Process Engineer for Smith
& Loveless, Inc. designing wastewater treatment systems. In 2008, he joined Bio-
Microbics as Executive Vice-President to provide process engineering and regulatory ex-
pertise.
Mr. Bell is currently the President Elect of NOWRA (National On-Site Wastewater Recy-
cling Association) and the Vice-Chairman of the Joint Committee on Wastewater for the
NSF, which develops the NSF standards for small onsite wastewater treatment systems.
Mr. Bell is also an active member of the Small Community Committee for WEF (Water
Environment Federation) and is the Chairman of the Captains of Industry (COI) - an affili-
ate organization of the State Onsite Regulators Alliance (SORA).
Dwayne Jones — Bay Area Environmental
Dwayne Jones is president of Bay Area Environmental with over 30 years experience
providing consulting, conventional / alternative onsite system design, installation, and op-
eration. Dwayne is a National Environmental Health Association (NEHA) certified con-
tractor, past president of the Maryland Onsite Wastewater Professional Association
(MOWPA), and is a current member of the NOWRA Board

Jim Beeson is the founder and president of Piedmont Environmental Associates, PA. For the last twenty five years Jim has specialized in evaluation of soils for both small and large scale wastewater disposal systems. Jim has also installed and designed wastewater disposal systems. Jim has been qualified as an expert witness in court cases that require expert wit-ness on such matters. Jim also directs developers in making decisions based on soils, envi-ronmental, and financial issues. Jim also assists clients in making applications for wastewater disposal systems.

John Ritter —Engineering Design & Development
John Ritter, PE, is the owner and President of Engineering Design & Development, Inc. in Richmond Virginia and has been designing onsite sewage systems for over 20 years. John has a civil engineering degree from Old Dominion University and his background includes environmental engineering, onsite water and wastewater treatment systems, geotechnical engineering, surveying, land development, and construction. His company focuses on on-site sewage and water systems, discharging systems, landfill operations and construction, and construction monitoring and testing. He has designed numerous alternative systems for single family homes, community systems, restaurants, schools, and multi-use sites which typically utilize at least secondary treatment and pressurized dispersal. John feels he has a unique perspective on design as he is not the product of the health department or of the industry status quo.
