President’s CornerBy: Bill Oates

The older I get the quicker time seems to fly. We have already held the summer picnic and now looking forward to the balance of the year. If you missed the picnic, you missed a great time at a wonderful location. Kempton and Mary Shields were kind enough to offer their spectacular home for the event. It turned into just a great day. We apparently were on our best behavior as the Shields have invited us back next year.

We have had some great activities during the first half of the year. A popular one was the indoor karting event, which was a blast. It also required more effort than I imagined; those karts are quick. The driving school at the Williamsburg/Newport News Airport by all accounts was exceptional. We look forward to continuing at that location.

We have seen a drop off in attendance at some events this year. I worry about missing something simple we could be doing to ensure more attendance. While I don’t pretend to have a ready solution, I will be talking with members for new ideas.

We will hold our first annual Habitat for Humanity Benefit Golf Tournament on September 22nd. The tournament will be held at The Tournament Player’s Club, a fun and challenging course in Virginia Beach. You will find more detailed information about the tournament on the next few pages of this issue of Das Kummet. I would like to take this opportunity to ask everyone who owns or can rent (I have an extra set) clubs to please sign up to play. We would like as many people as possible to join us for a fun day and its a great opportunity to raise money for Habitat for Humanity. We are in need to lots of volunteers for such things as witnesses for the hole in one location. We are looking for companies or individuals to sponsor holes. Please contact me if you can provide any assistance so we can make this event one we can be proud of. As always I can be reached at 757 456 9923 or [email protected].

South Hampton Roads Habitat for Humanity (SHRHFH) has built 133 Habitat for Humanity homes with low-income working families throughout the re-gion since 1989.

As the local affiliate of Habitat for Humanity Interna-tional, SHRHFH helps to carry out the Habitat mis-sion to eliminate substandard housing by providing home ownership opportunities for working families who do not qualify for a traditional mortgage.

Habitat volunteers bring muscle and motivation to the jobsite, but funds are needed to purchase build-ing materials and secure other resources necessary to reach building goals. Generous people like you

make what we do possible. For additional informa-tion, please call our office at 625-1281 or visit our website at habitatforhumanity-shr.org.

Suffolk Fun Rally has great Weather (finally)and Lots of Fun!By: Joe Bivins & Jay Neal

The weather was beautiful, the convertible tops were down, attendance was great, and most all had a great day! The rain/snow/sleet delayed Suffolk Fun Rally, which was originally scheduled for Feb., turned out to be great in May! We had 35 people gather for the Rally that started in Suffolk on Saturday, 20 May. The cars ranged from an “older” 5 series that has parts from most BMWs ever made, to Jud & Ann Black’s new E60 M5 [with 500 horses!], an X5, a few “top down” convertibles, and even one very red 8 series in almost perfect condition! The people ranged from age 2 to, well…, well above 60. Everyone enjoyed the back roads of the Suffolk and beyond – the scenery was pretty, and the route was nice and interesting. It proves the point once again that BMW’s have the most fun on the back roads! The Rally route took everyone westward away from the busy metropolitan areas of Southside. There were lots of nice empty twisting roads to traverse, homes, farmland and woods to view, and one small town to meander through. We ended up in Wakefield, Va. and had a great lunch at the Virginia Diner.

Determining who won was not a problem for Rallymasters Joe Bivins and Jay Neal. The scores were close, but we had a “clear” winner by ½ point. Steve and Jaeson Dandalides won 1st place by

answering 27 of the 30 questions correctly, and only having ½ point deducted for mileage error. The teams of Rick and Bev George, and Mike Dandalides and Dave Horwitz both tied for 2nd place, being only ½ point back. Wally and Danene Abdallah, completing in their first fun rally, completed it on time and managed to stay on course very well, coming in only ½ mile off the official mileage. [However, no comments will be made regarding the number of questions they answered!]. Two other newcomer teams—Thomas Smith and his wife in their nice Z3, and Philip and Tina Rowland in their beautiful 850i—definitely took their time, but both completed the rally without peeking at the “bailout map”, and answered most of the questions correctly! We had lots of nice prizes, and trophies for both 1st and “dead Dog Last” places

Chris Brown’s nice M5 made it to the Diner OK!

Everyone seemed to enjoy lunch.

Here’s a great way to enjoy a summer Saturday — our July 22nd ‘gimmick rally’. You and your “navigator d’jour” will drive the Williamsburg back roads in your favorite car! To top it off, the rally will end at a nice restaurant for a late lunch—with prizes for both the apt and the inept. Jim Waldeck, one of our Rally-masters, has a designed another great rally!

Not a re-run This is not the same route run at the 2005 Williamsburg rally. In fact, the club hasn’t used this route for some time; it’s new for most of us.

Hold the GPS, please This will be a “fun” rally with no timing involved. You just follow directions, and answer some tricky questions along the way. Jim guarantees the roads to be fun, and the questions will at least be “interesting”. We will have “Bail Out” envelopes for all, so if you do get lost you can still get to lunch with everyone.

Mark the date Be at the Williamsburg Marriott, Saturday, July 22 [in their side parking], 50 Kingsmill Rd., Williamsburg at 9:45AM for a 10:00 start. Everyone

should be at our selected restaurant by 12:45 or so to start enjoying lunch.

If you participated in our Virginia Beach Rally this spring or last springs rally the format for this event is similar. If you have never done a rally before they are fun and not difficult. More information on “Fun Rallies” is provided in Event Essentials

What else do I need to know about the event? You need a navigator. If you don’t have a navigator then post a message on our Das Kummet Yahoo Group telling everyone you need a navigator or driver depending on what you want to do yourself. You will probably find a volunteer. The driver drives and keeps track of the mileage traveled while the navigator calls out the directions and looks for answers to the clues. Be sure to RSVP with Jim (contact information in ‘Essentials’ at left).

What clues? Oh, I forget to mention the clues. On the instruction sheet there will be clues and questions asked along certain points on the route. You must read the clue and find the answer to the question. At the end of the route you will turn in your directions with the total number of miles you traveled and your answers to

the questions. The team with the lowest miles traveled wins a prize. So does the person with the most questions

answered correctly. The event organizers resolve any ties.

Is there anything else? Gas tank mostly full, a bottle of water, cell phone and pocket change are all good things to have on hand. Also, make sure your car is in roadworthy condition as always.

What a glorious and beautiful day for a picnic; we had it all. The sun, the view, a nice breeze and good food. The day started out a little cloudy and cool, but it wasn’t long before the picnic gods bestowed their favor on us; soon the SPF 50 came out.

The best part was the location. Kempton and Mary Shields’ opened up their beautiful home on the Mattaponi River just outside of West Point at the confluence of the Pamunkey River where it forms the York River. Sixteen of the club’s faithful showed up to share and enjoy the bounty of food supplied by the club and those attending. Thanks to Glenn Martin for rescuing the pork shoulder from my front porch and putting up with the traffic to finally join the party. The really late arriving pork shoulder was enjoyed by a few who must have known that more food was arriving. Then there was the cake, the cake of all cakes and an appropriate one at that as you can see from the photograph. YUM YUM.

After lunch we were entertained by the “spud gun”. Someone with too much time on his or her hands devised this contraption and now it is all over the Internet. But you really need a place on the river or a lake to enjoy it to its fullest. Check out www.spudgun.com

Tim Jones showed up with his “new” 2002. This is the car that was on

the cover of the Roundel in January 2002. You luddites remember the car, the one with the S14 motor pumping out 240 HP. Tim has gotten himself a beautiful car.

Speaking of die-hards at the picnic, Aaron and Glenn were

able to enjoy a sunset cruise on the York River as guests of Kempton and Mary. They were the lucky ones.

Actually the “lucky ones” were all the people who made it to the picnic. The rest of you missed the boat. BUT you all have another chance next year as Kempton and Mary have offered

their place for next years’ picnic.

Welcome to new members Ralph and Eileen

Megenity who attended their

first Club event. We hope to see more of you.

The Patina DigestBy: Steve Waddell

“It Will Always Be My Car”

Have you ever considered who owns a car? Not just in title but in real life? Some cars find their rightful owners early in life, while others take ages – sometimes withstanding years of abuse from caregivers who strip them of all dignity and pass them on as if they were an old refrigerator dumped on some lonely back-country road. All of our cars have their stories. And in fact, a few great local stories come to mind...

…like the beautiful 1974 2002 tii which gave its life while saving the life of its owner’s son. That car then passed on parts to allow the rebirth of a Verona red ’73 2002 that was found in a barn. The poor ‘73 was just sitting forlorn in a corner of the barn, probably wondering where its owner was. Then all of a sudden, the barn door swings open and there it is. Kind of the same feeling you had when you saw your wife for the first time. (Okay, the wife is not thrilled with the comparison.) You open the door and pop the hood and the romance begins.

There’s also an Inka ’02 who joined its owner’s family in 1976, when it was only four years old. It was a daily driver for years before being lovingly disassembled and restored over a span of about 10 years or so. The car lives on with its family.

We all know who owns the 1981 Saphire Blue, Megasquirt’ed Euro 528i. And then there are my cars – two 1976 2002s – who migrated cross-country from California to find me. Kind of like a cat who travels thousands of miles to find its way home. One was even salvaged from a junkyard by its previous owner - a close call.

There are other stories, other cars, too. Like the “phantom” cars that are talked about but never seen, like a local 1968 2002 and a 1973 Sahara 2002, referred to simply as “the ‘68” or “the ‘73” by their owner’s peers. And there are those who collect BMWs, owning several at a time, or who sort out, build up and restore these classics to incredible condition before passing them on to loving new caretakers.

Often, cars like these aren’t sold by their “rightful owners” and if they are, are forever known as “so-and-so’s car”. If you’re still looking for your car – don’t worry. It’s on its way to you. My cars took over 8 years to

reach me once I started looking, but it’s all part of their — our — story.

Enjoy the ride.

Steve Waddell

there it is.”
