2016ANNUAL REPORT
Jeremiah Program 2016 Annual Report | 1
Dear Friends,
There is no greater gift than one made to strengthen families and their futures. Thank you; we couldn’t do it without you.
Your investment in Jeremiah Program has given us the capacity and resources to partner with determined single mothers and their young children who are thriving now, thanks to your generosity. Within Jeremiah we have high expectations of ourselves and our families. This is evident in our ability to navigate change, growth, and transition. We know change is uncomfortable and takes time, it occurs from the inside out and we believe in the transformative power of education for mothers and their young children simultaneously.
Jeremiah is approaching nearly 20 years of success. Our holistic approach is nationally recognized and we are compelled to respond to the call from communities seeking our transformative two-generation model; scaling to meet the growing population of low-income single mothers in the US and addressing the barriers they face trying to earn their 2-year or 4-year college degree.
The mothers we meet across our campus communities, from Austin, Boston, Fargo-Moorhead and Rochester, MN to Minneapolis, and St. Paul, share a common thread of hope, courage and determination. The good news is that through Jeremiah, they build a network of support so they don’t have to pursue their dreams in isolation. We know Jeremiah’s two-generation strategy works.
• 455 women and children served in five cities across the United States
• 68% increase in earnings for the 2016 Jeremiah graduates, from what they were earning when they entered
the program
• 70% of moms across all Jeremiah campuses who were academic all-stars, earning a GPA of 3.0 or above
• 81% of alumnae children who attended a Jeremiah child development center are performing at or above
grade level in elementary or middle school
• $47,609 average income of graduates from the past five years
• 19,204 volunteer hours given by 1,426 volunteers across our locations
We have successfully completed the first year of our 2016-2018 strategic plan and we are accelerating our impact in partnership with people from around the country. Jeremiah is committed to quality, data analysis, innovation and leadership within the 2Gen field. We rely on our collective voices to advance the national conversation on the two-generation approach to ending poverty. You can learn more about each of our campuses and the volunteers and donors who make this work possible on the following pages.
Too many single mothers face nearly insurmountable barriers to moving out of poverty and their children are at risk of starting school behind their peers; it can seem impossible to catch up. Jeremiah Program is committed to removing key barriers for motivated single mothers so they can achieve their career-track college education. We believe that with a combination of quality early childhood education, a safe and affordable place to live, empowerment and life skills training, coaching and career-track education, families can find stability and a path forward- a pathway out of poverty.
You are an integral part of transforming families from poverty to prosperity. Our collective impact throughout the U.S. is a game changer for at least two generations and ultimately creates a better future for neighborhoods and communities.
Thank you for all you do!

2016 HIGHLIGHTS
Transforming Lives in 2016
2016 was a year of tremendous growth for Jeremiah Program. Thanks to support from funders
like you, we accelerated our efforts to meet the growing demand across the country for Jeremiah’s
proven two-generation approach to transforming families from poverty to prosperity.
We are pleased to share highlights of our accomplishments this past
year. Because of your support, we:
Completed a capital campaign and cut the ribbon on a beautiful new
campus in Austin, TX, in March 2017 thanks to major gifts from partners
such as the Moody Foundation, The Harry and Jeanette Weinberg
Foundation, Nelson Puett Foundation, Guadalupe Neighborhood
Development Corporation, and Austin Housing Finance Corporation.
Established a permanent home in Boston, MA, to offer our holistic
support to families thanks to ongoing support from Annie E. Casey
Foundation, Endicott College and new Boston partners including The
Boston Foundation and BNY Mellon Foundation.
Received major capital gifts from Margaret A. Cargill Foundation, Otto
Bremer Trust, National Housing Trust Fund, and two anonymous donors,
nearly completing our capital campaign for a campus that will serve 20
families at a time in Fargo, ND-Moorhead, MN.
Introduced mental health services and greatly expanded career services
for our determined mothers in Minneapolis-St. Paul, MN, with the support
of many local partners, including Greater Minneapolis Crisis Nursery,
Opus Foundation, The Saint Paul Foundation, Otto Bremer Trust, and F. R.
Bigelow Foundation.
Hired our first Executive Director in Rochester MN, thanks to early
support from Otto Bremer Trust, Mayo Clinic, Rochester Area Foundation
and local partners such as Olmsted County Community Services and
Families First of Minnesota.
Provided support to 15 cities interested in bringing a Jeremiah Program
to their communities, including Charlottesville, VA, and Brownsville,
in Brooklyn, NY, where we have formed important partnerships with
Community Solutions and SCO Family Services.

Angelina Kery
Angelina is clear about her goal: She intends to obtain a doctorate degree. Now a student at Endicott College in Boston and a Jeremiah Program participant, she is growing in confidence that this goal can soon be a reality.
When she came to Jeremiah in 2015, Angelina was newly divorced and, in her words, “struggling to stay afloat financially, emotionally and spiritually, not only for myself but for my children as well.” She also faced the loss of a job after the law firm where she had been working for 15 years dissolved.
At Jeremiah, Angelina has worked with coaches to formulate a budget and gain a clear view of her financial situation. “The one-on-one coach helped me lay out what are my expenses compared to my income,” she says. “Now I am able to be more
financially responsible.”
Angelina says Jeremiah’s empowerment course helped her manage her emotions and to understand that she was not alone.
“There are many women going through similar situations or even worse,” she says. “This program has helped me reflect on my future goals and actually make them happen.” Workshops have also helped her learn to manage stressful situations, improve
her college-level writing skills, and have healthy relationships with her 9-year-old daughter Sarai and 7-year-old son Isaac.
Her children are learning alongside her, Angelina reports.
“They come with me to the workshops and are able to meet other moms with their children, and
even help with some of the younger kids in the program.”
A psychology major, she is growing in insight about how to support families that are struggling. “As a single mom, I know we
face daily challenges. I encourage any single mom to take time to reflect and value yourself. Once you are able to do that, you can encourage your children to do the same. It all begins with you!”

Anthony Barr
FEATURED DONOR STORY Minneapolis-St. Paul, MN
Jeremiah Program 2016 Annual Report | 5
Viking’s linebacker, Anthony Barr, through his Raise the Barr Foundation, hosted its first holiday party and fundraiser as a way to give back to a cause near and dear to the Barr family.
“In raising a child you have many proud moments, and our family has had A LOT of those moments in the last four or five years, but tonight is really one of the proudest for me…it exceeds all others,” Lori Barr said. Raise the Barr Foundation helps to provide
single mothers with financial assistance for higher education and childcare. Lori Barr was 20 years old, a sophomore in college, when she had Anthony in Indiana, before the two eventually settled in Southern California to be near family. Barr went on to be
an All-American linebacker at UCLA before the Vikings drafted him ninth overall in 2014.
“I’m extremely proud of my mom and all she’s accomplished,” Barr said. “She always put me in a position to win and be
successful. That is what tonight is about, and hopefully we can help to provide opportunities for other single moms, to help set
them up for success,” he added. “I can’t thank her enough for everything she’s done for our family and me… this is just a little
way to give back to her.”
Lori Barr said help from a foundation such as Raise the Barr would have been a relief to her when she was trying to raise Anthony
in the 1990s. “There are a lot of struggles that come with being a single parent, whether it’s a single mom or single dad,” Lori
Barr said.
“When you are raising a boy as a single mom, it’s difficult because you have concerns of how that young boy is going to grow up into a young man. “I didn’t always have the right tools to show him how to do that. It was very challenging, but I was lucky
enough to have the support of my family and loved ones to help me, and I am so grateful to see the amazing man that Anthony
is today,” she added. “Not ever mom has that, and that is where Raise the Barr comes in. We can fill in those gaps … whether it’s help with childcare or help with education-related expenses, we are going to be there to walk that journey with that mom
and let her know that she’s not alone.”
“My mom and I founded an organization, Raise the
Barr Foundation, which is deeply connected to our
personal experiences. We know, first-hand, how
important it is to families to equip single mothers
with education and opportunities to succeed.
When I learned about the Jeremiah Program and
the great work they do with single moms and
their kids, I instantly felt a connection and wanted
to become involved somehow. When I see those
little kids, I see myself and it’s important to me
that Raise the Barr finds a way to collaborate and
support the mission of Jeremiah Program.”
- ANTHONY BARR
Whitney Wright
“I started volunteering with Jeremiah Program in the summer of 2014. I was not looking to start
volunteering anywhere, but rather for a new job and Jeremiah Program just fell into my lap.
My first volunteering experience was at our summer block party and I knew as soon as the day
was over this was an organization I could devote my time to for years to come.
I have had the privilege of being a part of four childcare sessions for the empowerment classes,
I have taken the community members class, and am embarking on my second Generation Builders
luncheon. It has been such a privilege and blessing to work alongside the single mothers in
our community, as well as the wonderful community members who volunteer their time to this
organization every day.
Jeremiah Program has such a special place in my heart, growing up in a similar environment and
having a sister who is an outstanding single mother. I have seen my own mother, sister, and the
women in this program rise up through the obstacles life has thrown at them and be the best
mothers they can be for themselves and for their children. This organization is doing powerful
things not only for the mothers in this community but also the women in our community. I can’t
wait to see what the future has in store for us!”

Deja Phillips
Deja’s father was always her biggest champion, so when he was recently killed in a tragic accident, her world came crashing down. “I struggled with my education after his death,” she says, “but shortly after he died I also received my greatest
blessing: my son Rashad, Jr.”
As she began searching for childcare resources, she came across Jeremiah Program.
“What caught my attention was the fact that the organization is built on supporting the
child’s education, as well as the mother’s. I wanted to be a part of a community that cared
about me and my child.”
This past March, Deja joined Jeremiah Program Austin, finding a support system that she had been lacking. “With empowerment training, I learned that I am lovable, important and valuable. I learned how to be strong for my son. I want to be
a role model for him and the truth I found in empowerment is helping me do that. Jeremiah is helping me mend parts of me
that felt broken and lost.”
Deja is also learning how to set financial and academic goals— and to continue building self-confidence in herself as a parent and a student. She is in her second year at Austin Community College studying criminal justice. She intends on becoming a
juvenile probation officer.

Otto Bremer Trust
The Otto Bremer Trust awarded Jeremiah Program Rochester - SE MN significant funding in 2016 to move forward with development of a Southeast Minnesota Campus. OBT staff provided invaluable guidance and information related to other
community organizations, helping to establish referral pathways for single moms in our area and identifying local program
partners to enhance the long-term sustainability of our program.
Otto Bremer Trust provided 50% of our funding for the Exploration Phase of Jeremiah’s expansion to Southeast Minnesota.
Bremer Trust has also provided support for our Minneapolis-St. Paul, and Fargo-Moorhead campuses.
“We were pleased to provide this support and guidance to Jeremiah Program.
Its expansion into Southeast Minnesota will provide invaluable resources to help move more
families out of poverty.”

“The Jeremiah Program Staff has
given me hope by taking my
sons in as their own, showing
me I am not alone and I that
I will succeed in life.”
– MARISSA MARTINEZ, Jeremiah Resident
Jeremiah Program 2016 Annual Report | 16
AUSTIN, TX Featured Mother Story
Marissa Martinez
Marissa is 19 years old and has two amazing sons, Jayden who is 4, and Bryan who is 2. She was first referred to Jeremiah Program by her father and his wife who saw a story on the local news and felt it would be a perfect fit for Marissa’s sons. She didn’t know it at the time, she says:
“just how the program would affect me so personally and change me from the inside out.”
She applied to Jeremiah Program hoping to get accepted so she could provide safe, affordable housing for her family and join
a community to help her obtain her college education. Her biggest challenge was having two sons by the age of 16. “After my
parents divorced (at age 14), I felt lost and abandoned which led to me making choices that I would not have otherwise. It is
extremely difficult being a single mother of two boys, working and going to school. Yet, I persevered and graduated from high school early by my sophomore year when I was five months pregnant with my second child. Jeremiah Program has provided me with the support to grow and accomplish all of my dreams.”
Marissa says that Jeremiah Program has changed her life in many ways. When she first applied to the program, she only wanted to obtain her certificate in Surgical Technology but as she went further into empowerment classes, she felt barriers fall away and knew that she could achieve more. She says she has learned many strategies during empowerment classes that have greatly
impacted her overcoming personal and educational barriers. Now she is enrolled in Austin Community College and plans to
receive her Associate’s degree and then continue her education and receive her Bachelor’s of Applied Sciences degree with
Concordia University and Austin Community College.
“The Jeremiah Program staff has given me hope by taking my sons in as their own, showing me
I am not alone and that I will succeed in life. I am not only creating a future for myself, but for
my sons and the Austin community. I believe the sisterhood and family we create on our campus
will not only impact the greater Austin community but generations to come.”

“I support JP because I feel like a community is pulled down by
its weakest members. Anything we can do to help those who,
for whatever reason, cannot help themselves prevents issues and
expenses for our community in the future. Helping in a way that
is not a band-aid is much more appealing to me. JP is doing work
that will last forever for all the members of these families.”

– CHRISTINA SAMAHA, Volunteer & Donor
Jeremiah Program 2016 Annual Report | 22
BOSTON, MA Featured Volunteer Story
Christina Samaha
I first found Jeremiah because I lived in the neighborhood of the Minneapolis campus, and noticed cute kids in the playground. I looked into it, and found it was an incredible program that worked with low income single mothers who
were incredibly driven for education for themselves and their children.
I couldn’t imagine anyone that wouldn’t be excited about that initiative. I first got involved helping with weekly Life Skills; childcare while moms were learning about skills that they needed for success. Over time, I helped where I could with some
career coaching, tutoring, and was on the junior board briefly before I was relocated out of state by work.
Eventually, I found myself in Boston and was really excited that Jeremiah’s expansion to Boston coincided with my move there.
I feel like I get as much if not more from volunteering, than what I give. I feel inspired by the talented staff that are doing a
lot with a little and being innovative with the Jeremiah model. The women themselves are so inspiring; they’re excited about potential for themselves and their kids. They work SO HARD (especially as a new mom, it’s put it into perspective about
how hard they work) and don’t have a lot of resources to help raise their family. I am just happy to give to the organization in
whatever way I can.
I’m also impressed with Jeremiah’s dedication to outcomes. The leadership thinks carefully about who they are working with and
how; they take time and resources to make sure they are actually being effective. I haven’t seen that commitment to outcomes in a lot of other organizations. One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned since I got involved in Boston was helping tutor a mom
while she was on maternity leave. She already had a young son and a baby; she invited me into her home to help her stay on task with her schoolwork. I saw that my presence in her home allowed her to give herself permission to focus on herself. It
allowed me to learn about her life as a low income single mother and give me an understanding of her experiences. I learned
that what I think moms might need is not necessarily true and may be totally different.

“I can’t wait to become the

to be and just have a better

my daughter.”
– AMANDA, Mother
Jeremiah Program 2016 Annual Report | 26
FARGO-MOORHEAD Featured Mother Story
Amanda & Zoey
Two years ago, when Amanda got her fourth DUI after a bad car accident, she hit rock bottom. She had been struggling with drugs and alcohol for many years, but in drug court, she was given a second chance at turning her life around. “I
decided enough was enough and I was going to take every opportunity to get the help I needed to make this change in
my life,” she said.
Several months later, successfully sober, she found Jeremiah Program Fargo-Moorhead while searching online. She immediately
signed up for the empowerment class in spring 2016. “Before Jeremiah Program, my life was not okay,” she says. “I was sober
and living clean but I did not have any confidence in myself nor did I believe I could become anything because of my past and the fact that I was a single mother living in poverty.”
The mother of a beautiful little girl named Zoey, Amanda longed to be the best she could possibly be for her daughter. But fear
of failure and rejection plagued her. At Jeremiah, she learned a powerful quote in empowerment: “I am lovable, important and
valuable.” Amanda says she says this to herself every morning, the moment she gets out of bed. “Just saying these words made
me believe that I am worthy of great things,” she says. “The empowerment class was a nice awakening of my soul and what I
can do when I have the confidence to get out and do it.”
Her work with Jeremiah led her to apply to North Dakota State University. Today, she is pursuing a degree in human
development and family science/elementary education. “I can’t wait to become the teacher I have always wanted to be and just
have a better life and opportunities for my daughter.”
She enrolled in Jeremiah’s life skills class this fall and will be continuing this spring. She says she has learned that “everything
is possible if you work hard and have supportive people in your life.” She also notes that the other moms in the program have
made an enormous difference in her life.
“I have met some great moms
who want the same things
I do and are going through
similar situations and having
that support group is just
another bonus.”

Jeremiah Program 2016 Annual Report | 32
MINNEAPOLIS-ST. PAUL, MN Featured Mother Story
Tyesha Mitchell
Tyesha and her younger brother were raised by a single, hard working mother in Chicago. While growing up, Tyesha’s mother,
Lizette, worked long hours far from their home. Tyesha did not see her mother often, and promised herself that when she grew
up she would be more present for her own children. Unfortunately, Lizette passed away when Tyesha was 18, leaving Tyesha and
her brother to care for each other. Devastated and hopeless with little support, Tyesha, reluctantly, left her brother in 2005 to
pursue a better life in Minnesota.
Tyesha secured her GED and quickly enrolled in an adult development program. However, after graduating that program,
Tyesha found herself pregnant and in an abusive marriage. She went through a divorce soon after, with two young children,
feeling as though she had broken the promise she made to herself as a child. Luckily, Tyesha found Jeremiah Program online
and immediately loved the rigorous admission requirements, which spoke toward her passion of self-sufficiency.
Tyesha attended empowerment classes, which provided useful skills in self-awareness and conflict resolution, lessons she would use during her divorce mediation and beyond. Tyesha moved into Jeremiah Program and was astonished at the fully
furnished apartment and touched by the welcome basket of essential items. Life skills courses, family coaching, and a supportive
community helped her connect with mentors, and she received the encouragement she needed to pursue her passion in
clothing consulting. Today, her children, Trinity and Destiny are performing at grade level and enjoy a full and balanced life.
Tyesha will soon graduate with a Bachelor’s degree from Metropolitan State University in Human Services Family Studies after
completing her Associate’s degree in Liberal Arts while at Jeremiah. Tyesha is employed at Hennepin County Medical Center
and hopes to return to Jeremiah to volunteer as a life skills facilitator in the future.
“Two of the greatest gifts I received from Jeremiah Program were the ability to manage
transitions, and the opportunity to be surrounded by such helpful and supportive people.”

Paul Fleissner
Paul Fleissner is the director of Olmsted County Community Services. He heard Jeremiah’s CEO Gloria Perez speak at
a conference in Washington D.C. about Jeremiah Program and its two generation approach to breaking the cycle of poverty. He was so impressed that he brought some of his team and local community leaders to meet with Gloria and
tour our Minneapolis campus.
Olmsted County Community Services Director Paul Fleissner was our earliest supporter to expand into Southeast Minnesota.
Mr. Fleissener and his staff are known across the country for collaboration with supportive service providers to launch and
implement innovative outcome driven programs like Jeremiah Program to break the cycle of poverty. His contribution marks the
first community expansion spurred by a government leader.
“‘Make a career of humanity. Commit yourself to the noble struggle for equal rights. You will
make yourself a better person, a greater nation of your country and a finer world to live in.’
(MLK, Jr.) I believe Jeremiah Program is an embodiment of this statement and the work needed
to make it happen. Jeremiah provides a new pathway that leads toward self-sustaining families.
That makes for a finer world.”
- PAUL FLEISSNER, Director of Olmsted County Community Services

Jeremiah Program 2016 Annual Report | 47
“Doing all this wasn’t easy, of course. I have brought a
feverish, teething baby to lecture, typed essays one-
handed while nursing a sick toddler, and memorized
vocabulary between turns of Candy Land...But what
was challenging would have been impossible if it
weren’t for Jeremiah.”
– COURTNEY (TERRY) MASTIN, 2015 graduate of Jeremiah Program
