Report of the Board President and Executive Director

“While we try to teach our children all about life, our children teach us what life is all about.” ~ Angela Schwindt

Our Children, Our Future/Nos enfants, notre avenir (OCOF/Nena) continues to deliver high quality programs and services to the community. We are guided by our Vision of “Empowering and supporting children as well as families to foster a healthy future for our community.”

We are pleased to release our second narrative update report on our Strategic Plan titled “Bringing our Plan to Life – 2nd Update”. This report is a work in progress and will be available at our 2017 AGM and will be posted on our website.

We launched our Staff Satisfaction Survey as well as our Parent Feedback Surveys for both Programs and Daycares. An Executive Summary of these reports will be available at our AGM and a brief presentation of the results will be shared at the AGM.

Quality Programming has been a focus for both the Management Team and the Board of Directors as we work together to strengthen the quality of all of our programs. With quality comes professional development and training for all our staff in order to build capacity within the organization. We continue to work with our funders to bring the Ontario Early Years Child and Family Centres (OEYCFC) to fruition. OEYCFC will be embedded into local service system planning by 2018.

OCOF/Nena will continue to be actively involved in local Network Planning Tables and to strategically position our programs to be an integral part of the system of services based on neighbourhood/community needs. We would like to acknowledge and thank our funders for their support and trust.

OCOF/Nena continues to play a leadership role with our Regional Partners funded by Public Health Agency of Canada by being a member of the Coordinating Committee and managing “WebConnects”: an online tool that allows interactive connectivity with our CAPC/CPNP counterparts throughout Ontario.

OCOF/Nena is committed to standing firm in our community as an organization ready to embrace change and willing to collaborate with our community partners in order to achieve excellence in service delivery. This year the Sudbury & District Health Unit awarded our organization with the Public Health Champion Award, recognizing OCOF/Nena as an organization that has helped to spark change and impact social and economic factors that influence health.

This past year has seen a significant increase in our fundraising as we staged several successful fundraisers. You will find information on these events in our AGM Report.

We are fortunate to have strong fiscal oversight and risk management built into our slate of Board of Directors. Our Board directs and guides our organization in being a more effective and accountable organization. We would like to express our appreciation to our Board of Directors for their tireless enthusiasm and commitment as they work together with the constant vision of moving our organization forward into its future.

The dedication, passion and energy within our organization is incredible and we would like to thank the creativity and dedication of our staff, Supervisors, and the Management Team. It is the combined effort of Board, staff, volunteers, community partners, and our funders that make OCOF/Nena the success that it is.

Licensed DaycaresThis past year has been busy and exciting. Last summer our Sacred Heart Daycare in Espanola transitioned to the former A.B. Ellis site, as this will be its’ temporary home until the new school/daycare is completed. Sacred Heart was also thrilled to open their infant program in order to better meet the needs of that community. This has also increased the licensed capacity.

Enrolment in daycares has increased over the past year. The Manager of Quality Assurance has been with us for two years now, and we are happy to have hired a Pedagogical Coordinator to provide pedagogical training and guidance to support the development and implementation of play-based learning.

We continue to work on the recruitment and retention of qualified staff, particularly those that are bilingual.

Once again we would like to thank our team of supervisors and the staff who are committed to strengthening the quality in our daycares and who will go above and beyond to ensure our children and families have a safe, warm and caring environment. Our daycare supervisors continue to take a leadership role in the community and are being intentional when setting goals within their teams. We anticipate that 2017/2018 will be another exciting time.

Carole CôtéDirector, Childcare Services

Quality AssuranceInvesting in professional development internally and within the community has provided parent resource workers, supervisors and daycare staff with resources and skills to enhance our quality services and understand pedagogy as a means to reinforce excellence in the programs and daycares. Whether it is the Leadership Series where supervisors are being empowered in their roles, or CPI (Non-violent Crisis Prevention Intervention Training), we continue to provide opportunities to gain knowledgeable experience that will only solidify the quality that our children and families deserve. Everyone is included in professional development. Our cooks have met with a dietitian while planning summer menus to make certain that the nutritional guidelines from the Ministry of Education and the Sudbury and District Health Unit have been taken into consideration, and that our children are consuming healthy, nutritious food.

Accessing professional development opportunities is crucial, but the greater value is in the accountability of bringing the information and training back to Our Children, Our Future/Nos enfants, notre avenir (OCOF/Nena), and transferring it to practice so we can all benefit from these investments. We have taken responsibility in providing internal training in pedagogy and quality, along with mentoring and coaching to all staff regardless of their previous education and background. Continuous Professional Learning and goal setting is ongoing.

Over the next year, the staff at OCOF/Nena will be supported by our Pedagogical Coordinator and me, as we continue to focus on the Four Foundations and what they “look” like. Included will be the importance of documenting children’s learning. The continuous cycle of learning taking place includes our staff as every one of us is in a different place on our journey.

Program Manager’s ReportOver the past year, we have been working on exciting opportunities and our ever growing and changing programs continue to reflect the needs and diversities of our communities. We are proud to say that the work that we do continues to reflect our organizational values of Development, Inclusiveness, Collaboration and Excellence. We would like to thank our staff for all of their hard work, creativity, and dedication in working with our children and families. They have had an exceptional impact on all our communities.

We have highlighted below a few of our successes throughout the year.

Family Resource Program/Minnow Lake and OCOF South Central Best Start Hub (Sudbury): In partnership with the city, we continue to participate in the Healthy Kids Community Challenge by delivering Activate Grades 5-8 at Adamsdale Public School and R.L. Beattie Public School. Also, in partnership with NOAH’s Space and Positive Connections, we continue to offer programming at 1960 Paris.

We continue with our commitment to physical well-being through our Getting Healthy with OCOF program. Our staff have been actively involved with the Community Gardens project which continues to be successful.

This past year we have developed a relationship with Minnow Lake Lion’s Club. This organization has been supportive of our families through their assistance with the Minnow Lake Family Fun days, Christmas Breakfast, and bus rental.

Family Resource Program/Sudbury East Best Start Hub (Noelville, St. Charles, Markstay/Warren): As part of OCOF/Nena’s continued commitment to healthy lifestyles and physical well-being programming, we continue to partner with the municipalities and schools to deliver Zumba and Zumbini classes to parents and children throughout the area.

This year we have developed great partnerships within all three municipalities which include the libraries, municipalities, schools, Community Health Centre, Carrefour Francophone daycare, Word Play, the Sudbury & District Health Unit (SDHU) Sudbury East site, etc. We have several new participants and we have had a higher amount of referrals from other agencies.

Dan BoivinManager, Program ServicesSudbury & Sudbury East

Family Resource Program/Hanmer Best Start Hub (Valley East, Capreol & Chelmsford): We were approached by Chelmsford Public School last year with a request to offer some food security programming to their vulnerable families. So far, one Crockpot Community Kitchen & four Community Kitchens have been offered at Chelmsford Public School. Parents have been extremely welcoming & appreciative of this program and feedback has been very positive.

As a result of a need in the community, we offered for the very first time a School Readiness Program at Redwood Acres Public School in Hanmer. This program was an overwhelming great success with 16 children attending. The educators observed significant growth and development within the children throughout the 8 weeks. Many children who were shy or apprehensive about the program quickly adapted to the structure and routine.

Family Resource Program/LaCloche Best Start Hub (Espanola, Webbwood, Massey): We continue to evolve and to meet the needs of the community. We were approached by the SDHU in regards to the ever growing amount of pregnant women that are currently in the community. Therefore, Creating Healthy Babies was offered earlier this year in partnership with the SDHU and held after hours at the Espanola High School. These prenatal groups provide parents the opportunity to share in a safe space their joys and challenges while formulating a deep network of friendships.

We had the opportunity to send one of our Parent Resource Workers to a Triple P (Positive Parenting Program) Group training in the fall. As a result of this, we’ve offered two 8 week groups in partnership with the SDHU. Based on the current needs of the LaCloche area, we offered one in Massey & one in Webbwood. For two small communities, we had great attendance at both sessions.
