Welcome to SitkaA Place to Nurture Your Creative Spirit

Sitka’s dynamic landscape furnishes an inspiring place for your imagination to flourish.

Come here to hone your skills or try something you’ve never tried before. You’ll benefit from the encouragement of expert instructors, curious classmates and helpful staff. Workshops range in length from one to five days and are designed for beginner, intermediate and advanced students. Choose from more than one hundred workshops in a wide variety of disciplines from writing to woodcarving to painting and more. Taking a class at Sitka is different than taking one in the city. You’ll be in a studio surrounded by towering Sitka spruce trees nestled by ferns and mosses, with a backdrop of Cascade Head, the Pacific Ocean and the Salmon River estuary. The air is fresh, the mornings crisp and the environment beckons you to explore. It is a special place. We hope you enjoy perusing this workshop catalog as much as we do. About the Sitka CenterEach person’s experience at Sitka is unique, but the common thread running throughout is a sense of place. It is inescapable. The coastal rain forest reaches to the sky with its oversized trees and soft understory with more shades of green than are conceivable. It seems inevitable that this dynamic landscape creates an interior spark, awakening ideas and encouraging reflection. Sitka is an ideal place for artistic learning and inquiry. This year, we celebrate our 45-year anniversary and are proud of our continued legacy connecting art, nature and humanity.

Sitka is located in Otis on the central Oregon coast between Lincoln City and Neskowin near Cascade Head and the Salmon River estuary (page 8). Summertime brings more than 900 students to our Workshop Program, with around 100 workshops from one to five days in length. These in-depth workshops in visual art, writing, ecology and music are designed for all skill levels (pages 11-36). Autumn transforms the campus from a bustling hive of workshops to a hushed and introspective vibe with our Residency Program. From October to May, artists, writers, natural scientists and musicians at varying stages in their careers stay, for up to 3½ months, and receive housing and studio space, free of charge.

The Resident Show & Tell and Mingle and Muse events give you an opportunity to visit Sitka and get a glimpse into the creative processes of our talented instructors, residents and local community members (pages 6-7). Every November, the Sitka Art Invitational takes us to Portland to showcase 450+ pieces of nature-inspired artwork by 140 Northwest artists. This show connects full circle the learning and art making that happens at Sitka during our Workshop and Residency Programs with the celebration and appreciation of finished artwork. During our week in Portland we offer a variety of workshops (page 36).

Look forward to meeting like-minded folks and enjoying snacks beginning at 4:30pm followed by the presentation at 5pm. • Because there is no student housing, RV parking or camping available at Sitka, you will need to find accommodations in Lincoln City, Neskowin, Otis or Pacific City.

Wait Lists and Fees• If the workshop is full, you may choose to be added to a wait list. If an enrolled student cancels, Sitka will immediately notify the first person on the wait list. • Material fees are used to reimburse instructors for supplies they provide for students. Instructors may buy materials that are difficult to find or more economical to purchase in bulk.

• Model fees are used to compensate the person who models.

ScholarshipsThrough generous private donations, Sitka is pleased to offer a limited number of scholarships to individuals who require financial assistance. Scholarships are need-based and cover one-half of a workshop’s tuition. Recipients are responsible for the remainder of the tuition. Scholarships do not cover cost of travel, accommodations, meals or materials fees. To apply, download an application from our website’s workshop page. Application deadline is April 30. CancellationsIf a workshop is cancelled due to low enrollment, you will be notified at least 14 days prior to the start of the workshop and you will receive a full refund. If you need to cancel from your workshop, please call (541) 994-5485 or email [email protected].

• Cancelling 21+ days prior to workshop = 100% refund less a $35 administrative fee. • Cancelling 14-20 days prior to workshop = 50% tuition and full materials fee refund with no administrative fee. • There is no refund for cancellations made less than 14 days before the first day of the workshop.

Frances Blaker Winds and Waves: Recorder WorkshopIntermediate | Age 16+

Work on a wide variety of music from the recorder repertoire with an internationally renowned recorder faculty. Classes are divided into three skill levels: intermediate, upper-intermediate and advanced. The end of the day on Monday is a “Grand Consort” with all participants playing together. The hours for this workshop are Saturday and Sunday 9am to 5:15pm, and Monday 9am to 3pm. A ticket to the Faculty Concert on Friday and catered lunches are included. Faculty Concert: Friday, April 24, 8pm at St. Peter the Fisherman Lutheran Church, Lincoln City.

Faculty includes Frances Blaker, Letitia Berlin and Clea Galhano all of whom perform, record and teach workshops in the United States and abroad. Frances, who composes for recorder and other instruments, and Letitia are based in the San Francisco Bay area and form the duo Tibia (www.tibiaduo.com). Clea, originally from Brazil, lives and teaches in St. Paul, Minnesota. She is on the faculty of Macalester College and other Twin Cities institutions. Guest instructor Rotem Gilbert is a native of Haifa, Israel and is a founding member of Ciaramella, an ensemble specializing in music of the 15th and 16th centuries. Rotem has been featured as a soloist for the Pittsburgh Opera, the Los Angeles Opera, Musica Angelica and the Los Angeles Philharmonica, and she is an assistant professor at the University of Southern California Thornton School of Music. Rotem is the 2015 Recorder Artist-in-Residence at the Sitka Center.

Kim Stafford Earth VerseAll skill levels | Age 16+

As a tree weaves a basket, as the moon pencils shadows, we will craft earth verse—drawn from the vocabulary of particular places in the landscape at Sitka, and informed by traditions of observation and evocation from the oldest forms in English literature: spells, riddles and blessings.

Akihiko Ishijima & Ruri Woodfire CeramicsAll skill levels | Age 16+

Handbuild a series of small clay vessels and learn about Mashiko, Japan’s pottery traditions. Once bisqued, select one of your pieces to be woodfired in the FuuKooGama anagama kiln in Sheridan during a 7-day firing in June. Arrangements may be made to visit during the woodfiring and finished works may be picked up, delivered or shipped.

Akihiko Ishijima studied under Sanzaemon Kamata in Hagi, Japan, and at the Royal Danish Art and Craft School in Denmark. He established a studio and kiln in Mashiko, Japan, in 1981. His work has been shown nationally throughout Japan and abroad. Originally from Japan, Ruri apprenticed under Tatsuzo Shimaoka before establishing her studio in Sheridan, Oregon. Combining text with image, you’ll create several small editions of unique, fine art letterpress broadsides using wood sign type and linoleum relief printing techniques. Layering concepts will be addressed throughout the workshop, as well as ink modification and mixing, basic color theory and composition strategies. Let’s get inky!

Bright colors, bold shapes and expressive lines make the work of Henri Matisse visually dance. Explore the use of color and shape inspired by the style of Matisse in small-scale abstract watercolor paintings, cut paper collages and whimsical ink drawings. Learn numerous techniques to create art with open-hearted simplicity.

Learn the technique of glass-on-glass mosaic using a salvaged window. Glass-on-glass mosaic has a striking result, as the design becomes illuminated when light shines through, creating a glowing piece of art that casts color into the surrounding space.

Angela Grainger Elements of Nature and Texture in WatercolorAll skill levels | Age 16+

Create dynamic, textured patterns in watercolor paintings by employing nontraditional techniques using plant materials, herbs, legumes, salt, stones and other elements. See how watercolor pigments react and leave beautiful and unique patterns on your paper. This workshop also emphasizes composition, design principles and color theory.

Let the Audubon Society of Lincoln City guide your birding photography to the next level. Topics will include identification of local birds, how to find and approach your subject and camera settings for varying conditions. A portion of your tuition will go directly toward the ASLC to help conserve and protect nature’s birds, wildlife and habitat. The hours of this workshop are 9am to 3pm.

Explore the relationship between text and image through illustration. Using drawing materials and a variety of water-based media, follow a series of exercises to learn how to select and plan your compositions as well as new approaches for both representational and abstract illustrations.

Cindy Lommasson Landscape Painting with Chinese Brush TechniquesAll skill levels | Age 16+

Create unique impressions of the surrounding landscape using Chinese materials and brush strokes. Depict rocks, mountains, trees, mist and clouds with sumi ink, Chinese watercolor, various brushes and papers. There will be daily demonstrations and lots of hands-on practice. You will complete two to three finished paintings.

Chinese brush painting has been the foundation of Cindy Lommasson’s art for over 10 years. Influences range from the imaginary landscape “Dream Journey” painters of ancient China to modern Abstract Expressionists. Jeffrey Opp Creating a Handmade Photo BookAll skill levels | Age 16+

Use your digital camera, whether it be a smart phone or digital SLR, to photograph your outdoor surroundings. Then print images and create a handmade book to capture your experience. Two classic binding formats will be presented, accordion and case-bound book. Leave with at least one completed book and skills for future projects.


Jeffrey Opp holds an MFA degree from San Jose State University. His handmade books combine text and image, allowing viewers to re-evaluate their participation in his photographed landscapes. Crocheting without patterns is easier than you think. Learn to make basic shapes and three-dimensional sculptures.
