Banteay Prieb (The Center of the Dove), a vocational training center for the disabled, was founded by JSC

(Jesuit Service Cambodia) in 1991. In the 1980s, JSC helped refugees at the border of Cambodia and

Thailand. At the dawn of 1990, the war had ended and all the refugees went home, but the people of

Cambodia were still paying the price through poverty, famine and injuries. As a result, JSC moved to the

Kandal Province and founded Banteay Prieb to help disabled people impacted by the war.

Every year, around one hundred students enter Banteay Prieb and receive vocational training. Banteay

Prieb offers five different courses: agriculture, mechanics, electronics, sewing and sculpture. Sculpture is a

two year course, while the other courses are all one year. Through the vocational training and cheerful

community life within the institution, students regain their dignity and become independent. We continue

to support past students through the Outreach Program. The Outreach Program maintains the close

relationship between the center and the past students through various means such as improving their

homes, setting up workshops for them or helping them find a job. In addition, in order to improve the

quality of life for the disabled, the Mekong Wheelchair was created. More than 1000 wheelchairs are sold

every year through the NGOs in Cambodia.

Banteay Prieb’s production workshops provide work for the disabled. All the money generated through

these workshops comes back to Banteay Prieb and its students. The workshops also provide graduates of

Banteay Prieb with the opportunity to work in internship. In production, there are four departments:

carpentry, welding, sculpture, and sewing. In the carpentry and welding departments, wooden furniture

and steel playground equipment can be made-to-order. Traditional hand-crafted Cambodian and Catholic

figurines are made in the sculpture department. Finally, the hand-crafts department produces Kromas

(traditional Khmer scarves), bags, necklaces and other similar items.

People are precious to Banteay Prieb. We believe that everyone has the power to change and regain their

dignity. Through their acquired skills, we believe that the students will not only be able to support

themselves and their family, but also use their skills to benefit their village. Our goal is for the Cambodian

staff to one day take over Banteay Prieb, so that the center will be fully independent and lead by

Cambodians. By helping to restore the dignity and independence of our disabled students, the hope of

Banteay Prieb is to help create a new peaceful future.

SCULPTURESculpture production consists of ten on-site staff members inside the

Banteay Prieb center. Outside of the center, many past students continue

to be involved in our production after graduation, by working on

sculptures in their own homes and maintaining their relationship with

Banteay Prieb. Our range of items are very diverse: from especially tiny

items, to statues 2-3 meters high. Production is not only an individual

working process; work on larger items reveals an energetic spirit of team-

work and cooperation. The sculptors' studio hums with a vibrant vigor as

the sculptors learn from each other and help each other to create each

sculpture. You can feel a very strong sense of cooperation and energy.

Our sculpture production grows in quality and quantity year by year, and

we have the confidence to say that we are proud to produce the best

sculptures in Cambodia.

SEWINGYou can find in our sewing production

workshop four young women, each a

2009 graduate of Banteay Prieb. Inside,

the atmosphere is always bright and

sunny, the sewing done to the happy

sounds of laughter. One Korean

designer, a volunteer, works alongside

them. The main products that the five

women create are all individually

handmade, fabric accessories such as

bags, pouches, hats and wallets.

Aiming for the traditionally Cambodian

and environmentally friendly, the fabric

used is the traditional Cambodian scarf,

the Kroma. The Kroma is hand-woven

on a loom and naturally dyed. Some of

the items are also made from recycled

clothing.

The designs of our products are based

on the traditional images of Cambodia

that convey a warmth and happiness, as

we wish to spread this feeling to others

through our products.

From our sewing production, our

graduates are provided with the

opportunity to practice their sewing

skills in preparation for their future jobs.

KROMA Cambodians traditionally wear a checkered scarf called a kroma. The kroma is what

distinguishes Cambodians from their neighbors the Thai, the Vietnamese, and the Laotians.

The scarf is used for many purposes - protection from the sun, for your feet when climbing trees,

a hammock for infants, a towel or even as a sarong.

WELDINGThe noise and energy of the flames in the welding workshop produce a

hothouse of activity. Inside, two staff members, former students and

graduates of Banteay Prieb, make playgrounds and children-sized desk

and chair ensembles.

All welded items are produced to order, specified by the requested size

and style.

Through the work of their warm hearts, the coldness of the metal is

turned into wonderful products. Iron alone is lifeless and dead. From

the touch of the two men, the iron seems to become alive and warm,

to become something for children.

Six staff members work in the carpentry workshop amidst the

busy sound of sawing wood. Each of the men are former

students and graduates of our center and have worked as

carpenters for more than ten years. Being very experienced

carpenters, they can make any item of furniture people ask.

Desks, chairs, beds, bookshelves and all kinds of other

furniture are made by production to order. All of our furniture

is made out of raw timber, giving each piece a quality solid

and heavy feel.

SHOPInside the center, we run a small shop.

This shop was just renovated in 2010.

Many people helped with the renovation process-

volunteers and designers came together to work and

because of this, our shop became very beautiful.

Here, we are able to display and sell our many

handmade sculptures and handicrafts.
