Camp Waluhili Oct. 2-4, 2015
Becoming an Outdoors-Woman®(BOW) is a non-profit,
educational program offering hands-on, outdoor workshops to
adult women in the United States and Canada since 1991. All
BOW workshops emphasize a supportive environment for
novices conducive to learning, making friends, and having fun.
BOW is not a membership organization and no experience is
necessary to participate.
All BOW workshops require teaching a balance of hunting
and shooting; fishing and boating; and non-consumptive
outdoor recreation activities such as campfire cooking, crafts,
and outdoor skills. Specialty trips to utilize skills gained at BOW
workshops are offered throughout the United States, Canada,
and abroad.
Susan Bencke
Director of BOW since 2012, Susan’s involvement spans more than a
decade in capacities such as lifeguard, logistical assistance, and
instructor for kayaking, sailing, and rappelling. An avid outdoors-
woman, Susan holds a B.S., Leisure Studies from Oklahoma State
University. She has worked in camps across the nation from Vermont
to Colorado, sharing her skills and passion for the outdoors with
people of all ages.
Camp & Outdoor Director for Camp Fire Green Country, Susan directs
resident camp each summer and a strong outdoor program for Camp
Fire throughout the school year.

What is Becoming an Outdoors-Woman®?
Becoming an Outdoors-Woman® (BOW) and Camp Fire place a
high value on inclusivity. Camp Fire purposefully supports
communities and groups underserved by other programs or
agencies - such as women participating in historically male-
dominated activities like hunting and fishing. Camp Fire welcomes
children, youth, and adults regardless of race, religion,
socioeconomic status, disability, sexual orientation, or other
aspect of diversity.
BOW fosters an environment of respect for the dignity and
worth of all participants, volunteers, and instructors. Diversity is
recognized as an important component of the program. Bias,
prejudice, discrimination, and harassment in all forms and
manifestations are not tolerated. Discrimination based on an
individual’s race, gender, religion, color, creed, disability, sexual
orientation, national origin, ancestry, age, marital status,
pregnancy, or parental status is demeaning to all, impairs the
process of education, and violates individual rights.
Women needing reasonable accommodations related to specific
medical diets, mobility challenges, or hearing/sight must request
these items on their Workshop Registration AND contact the BOW
Director at least 10 days before the workshop.

Tips for a Great Weekend: Remember that all classes are intentionally facilitated on a novice level and
deliberately lack competition to create a more welcoming learning environment for beginners.
Read class descriptions carefully - don’t base your choice on the class name alone. Request more information if you’re still not sure what to expect.
Note the “Class Activity Rating” to choose topics best suited for you.
Select your 1st, 2nd, and 3rd choice wisely. Classes fill quickly and many participants are assigned their 2nd or 3rd choice - choose three classes that appeal to you.
Challenge yourself to try one class outside your comfort zone!
Friday Afternoon, 2-5 pm
ARCHERY
Bullseye! Experience this popular sport and practice your
shooting accuracy. Proper shooting techniques and stance, using both
compound and re-curve bows, will be explained. You will have an
opportunity for plenty of hands-on archery shooting, and then finish
the class with fun archery games. Taught by our friends from the Bowhunting
Council of Oklahoma.
BLACKSMITHING
A blacksmith forges iron or steel using tools to hammer, bend,
and cut the metal. Try your hand at this traditional craft, then take
your project home to show off and use! An additional $15 will be
collected at check-in to cover the cost of specialized class materials.
Taught by our friends from the Saltfork Craftsmen Artist-Blacksmith Association.
FROM HOOK TO TABLE
This cooking class will take you through five easy and flavorful
fish recipes convenient for the campsite or kitchen. Your taste buds
will delight in the exotic spices of Morocco, savor the classic Italian
tradition of prosciutto and capers, and linger on the rich aromas of
simmering vegetable broths.
KAYAKING
You won’t be flipping upside down in these kayaks! Launch
yourself from the shores of Fort Gibson Lake in a very stable,
recreational kayak. Develop a sense of comfort with the equipment
and then start paddling solo in a flat-water kayak. Expand your skills
with plenty of paddling time and kayak games on the water. Bring your
own USCG approved lifejacket or wear one of ours.
LEATHER WORKING
From raw cowhide to finished project, it’s all up to you! Pick a
project then cut, punch, stamp, stain, and sew the leather. Project ideas
include belts, hat bands, draw string pouches, key fobs, or other ideas
you can dream up! An additional $10 will be collected at check-in to
cover the cost of specialized class materials. Taught by our friends from
Tandy Leather Company.

letterboxes around Camp Waluhili following clues then record your
discovery with your own hand-made stamp. Then, carve a second
stamp to hide more boxes in the area for others to find in the future.
PADDLEBOARDING
Standup Paddleboarding is gaining enormous popularity in our
land-locked state. Board and paddle shapes, sizes, and lengths will be
discussed before you head into the water. You’ll learn how to safely
board the boat, balance, and paddle using different strokes. Whether
you are looking for a great new road to fitness, want to fish off the
boards, or care to cruise around to enjoy nature, you will be quite
surprised at the ease of this sport. Bring your own USCG approved
lifejacket or wear one of ours.
RIFLERY

you! Enter the exciting world of shooting sports with a basic .22 rifle.
This is the perfect firearm for beginners to learn range and gun safety,
shooting stances, breath control, and aiming. You’ll be ready for the
“big guns” in no time!
Not as hard as we thought it would be!

after you combined your current knowledge of archery with the tips
and tricks gained in this class. Equipment and clothing, where to shoot
and aim, scouting/tracking techniques, and tree stands will all be
discussed in an outdoor classroom setting. Class will focus on
knowledge needed to successfully hunt - little to no archery shooting
will occur during this class. Taught by our friends from the Bowhunting Council
of Oklahoma.
CAR CONFIDENCE
You drive your car every day, but might feel overwhelmed when
it comes to simple maintenance. Your worries will be put at ease when
you learn from Camp Fire’s favorite mechanics. Practice changing a
tire and checking tire pressure and oil level then challenge yourself to
back a trailer by yourself! Taught by our friends at KC Auto.
DUTCH OVEN COOKING
FOR DIETARY RESTRICTIONS

matter their dietary restrictions! Prepare recipes accommodating a
range of restrictions including gluten-free, vegetarian, and vegan.
Information on equipment, care, and use will be covered as you
prepare, cook, and feast on your creations.
FIBER ARTS: SPINNING & FELTING
Follow the process of wool from loose fibers to yarn. Construct
your own drop spindle to spin the loose fibers into gorgeous yarn ready
for knitting. Then, take already spun wool and “felt” it onto a small
item . Once you’ve mastered your technique, wool purses will be
available for purchase for $15 for those that would like a larger project
to work on.

Can’t tell a catfish from a perch or a bobber from a lure? This is
the class for you! Start from the very beginning with equipment, knots,
and technique so you can join your friends when they’re out chasing
“the big one”. Already have the skills and interested in some quality
fishing time? Check out the Social Fishing “Hour” Saturday afternoon

the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation.

DUTCH OVEN: Cx(H2O)y = ENERGY!
No, this isn’t a chemistry class! Instead, enjoy your carbs in
delicious dishes in a Dutch Oven, including potatoes, pastas, rice, and
breads. While often shirked, carbohydrates give you the energy to fully
enjoy your next camping trip. Information on equipment, care, and use
will be covered as you prepare, cook, and feast on your creations.
FIREARM & KNIFE: CARE & CLEANING
Gun getting gummed up? Pocket knife barely cutting butter? It’s
time to give your tools and firearms some TLC! Disassemble a variety
of firearms for cleaning and whip out the whetstone to sharpen your
blades. Proper maintenance, storage, and care are important to keep
these items around for future generations and there’s no better time
than now to learn!
