    What to do

for an encore? After a scintillating, down-to-the-wire season,

2015 may offer more of the same

    re you not enter-tained?

    Had Russell Crowe’scharacter in “Gladia-

tor” asked that question in Lan-caster-Lebanon League footballarenas last fall, the answer wouldhave been a resounding “yes.”

And why not? Each of the three sections went

down to the regular season’s finalweekend, with eventual champi-ons Wilson, Lampeter-Strasburgand Northern Lebanon each

claiming their titles by a meregame.

Longtime head man DougDahms and his Bulldogs contin-ued their dominance of SectionOne, but not without a challengefrom Manheim Township. Wil-son went 7-0 in section play, andin effect won its seventh straighttitle on Oct. 17 in West Lawn bydealing the Blue Streaks their

lone L-L loss, 28-14. What can we say about Section

Two except that it was historicallygood, arguably the most competi-tive race in league history datingback to the L-L’s 1972 inception.Five of the section’s eight teamswere still in the hunt heading intothe final games. In the end, John

Class AAAA title and advancedto the state semifinals; Cocalicoreached the District Three Class AAA championship game.

And when the dust finally settledat the end of the long campaign, two of the league’s two longest-tenured head coaches — Man-heim Central’s Mike Williams and Annville-Cleona’s Terry Lehma— stepped down after a combined62 years on the job.

So what to expect in 2015?More of the same and, it says

here, perhaps an even better sea-son.

    For starters there’s the dramatic

return of L-S QB Collin “Bear”Shank from a brain tumor. Hiscourage, his faith, his determina-tion have inspired his teammates, his coaches and his opponents.

“It’s a testament to his desire,”Garden Spot coach Matt Zam-perini said. “I have a lot of respecfor his love of the game. Not a loof kids could have come back likehe has.”

Comebacks could be at a pre-mium in the league this season.L-L coaches in each of the threesections have likened their leagueschedules to a “gauntlet.”

Under coach Mark Evans, ManheimTownship, along with Solanco andNorthern Lebanon, have establishedthemselves as legitimate title con-tenders.

Manion guided Lampeter-Stras-burg (6-1) to its third title in fiveyears, the Pioneers finishing onegame ahead of Garden Spot and

    Manheim Central.In Section Three, fifth-year

boss Roy Wall took NorthernLebanon to its first title since1991, edging Lebanon Countyneighbor Annville-Cleona by onegame and defending championDonegal by two games.

OLD faces, NEW roles A quintet of new head coaches is quite familiar with the L-L’s brand of football

    ED GRUVER [email protected]

hey’re different yet similar. And like Frankie said, they’re

gonna do it their way. What John Brubaker of Penn

Manor, Dave Hahn of ManheimCentral, Elizabethtown’s Bill McDonald, Co-lumbia’s Anthony Sottasante and Annville-Cleona’s Matt Gingrich have in common isthat they’re the newest head football coachesin the L-L.

Each has been a player and then an assis-tant, learning what it takes to be a head coachin part from the man in charge.

“The main difference is a little more time,”said Hahn. “As assistants we’re used to thegrind. As a head coach, it’s a little bit more

(time consuming).”Some of the many things he learned from

Hall of Fame coach Mike Williams, Hahnsaid, are “organization, dedication, learningyour craft; how to deal with kids, with adults;things to do, things not to do…

“Mike,” he stated, “was a big influence.”Gingrich, too, has benefited from positive

influences.“I’ve been lucky,” said Gingrich, who played

and coached for longtime A-C boss TerryLehman, played for Millersville Universitylegend Gene Carpenter and coached along-side his brother, Dave Gingrich, at Cocalico.

Gingrich has learned from each, and alsocredited former Cedar Crest coach Gene“Spike” Fuhrman for part of his philosophy.

“Spike always said, ‘Get your best athletesin space,’ and that’s what we’re doing.”

Each new head coach comes in with dif-ferent strategies, different coaching phi-losophies. Brubaker, defensive coordinatorof Manheim Central’s title teams and statechampions in 2003, favors 4-4 and 4-3 fronts.McDonald, Lancaster Catholic’s offensivecoordinator for the Crusaders’ state titles in2009 and 2011, when they featured two of

Pennsylvania’s best players in QB Kyle Smithand RB Roman Clay, employs a multiple at-tack that stresses a run-pass balance.

What each coach has in common is thatthey’ve spent the months since their hiringputting together coaching staffs.

Hahn has the most unique situation; the venerable Williams is staying on to assist in

coaching the quarterbacks, defensive backsand special teams. Hahn said two veteran as-sistants from Central’s high-gloss staff — for-

mer Hempfield head man Tom Getz and ex-Lancaster Catholic coach Joe Mack — havestepped down. Both, he added, may still con-tribute in other ways.

Hahn has added another former head coachin Tom Waranavage from Cedar Crest. Bru-baker, too, has landed a respected formerhead man in Mike Burke Sr., who guided Co-lumbia.

McDonald may have had the most turn-over on his staff; former L-L All-Star QB and

wide receivers/defensive backs coach AndyBreault is the lone returnee from Mike Cot-tle’s coaches.

McDonald has brought in several assis-tants who share his Lancaster Catholic back-ground. TJ Rudy, former defensive coordina-tor for the Crusaders, now occupies the same

post for E-town. Mike McDonald and LukeMcDonald, former linemen at Catholic, havealso been assisting and Mike Kyne, the lasthead coach at Lebanon Catholic before its pro-gram was disbanded, is on staff as well.

“It’s a mix of experience and youth,” Bill Mc-Donald said of his coaching staff.

One other thing the new coaches have in

common is that their roots run deep in theL-L. Sottasante played at Donegal for groundgame guru Gayne Deshler. Not surprising, then, that Sottasante, who has remained fa-miliar with Section Three play, said his coach-ing philosophy is to “run the ball and stop the

    run.”

McDonald played for Tony DiPaolo at Catho-lic; Brubaker starred at running back for Man-heim Central, was named to the Big 33 teamand, like Matt Gingrich, played for Carpenterat Millersville.

One more shared similarity is that each manwill try to stay on top of the ever-evolvingschemes that trickle down to high school foot-ball from the college game and the NFL. It’s notuncommon to see a “Bear” defense one week, ano-huddle offense the next.

“It’s a neat group of coaches,” Brubaker saidof his L-L brethren. “Everyone works to stay ontop of the trends. There are a lot of varied looks, without a doubt.

“The old 5-2 (defense) from the 1980s,” hestated, “isn’t going to cut it.”

Out of the district playoff picture and playing in the reg-ular-season finale, McCaskeyfound itself down by 20 pointswith under eight minutes toplay against Conestoga Valleylast season.

It would have been easy for

both teams to figure the game

over at that point. The Red Tornado, prodded

by the coaching staff to finishthe game, took that directive toheart. The defense dug in andthe offense scored three TDs —the last one on La’Detrius Sib-ley’s 4-yard pass to Randolph

Speller — to tie the game. With

20 seconds to play, Max Chal-font kicked the game-winninPAT for the 42-41 victory.

That ability to come back,to finish the game, has stayedwith the Red Tornado throughthe offseason.

McCaskey’s Kobe Gantz gets pushed out of bounds by Reading’s Dontae Owens in a game last season. Gantz, who finished with 29 catches and 515 yards in 2014, will be a receiver for the Red Tornado this year.

“Early last season, we’d have spurtsof playing well and then we’d check outmentally,’’ said McCaskey coach Rob

Monzon. “(Opponents) would jump allover us. Then we’d start playing again. So, for that last game, for them to pullit together and finish strong and over-come the dismal first half (of that game)we had, it gives us motivation.’’

About the offense: Sibley, engineerof that comeback against CV, was theTornado’s leading rusher from thequarterback position. He’ll be replaced by

    senior John Burnside.

Nick Perez is the fullback in McCaskey’striple-option attack. Carlos Lugo, whoanchored McCaskey’s 400 relay team, willtest the edge on defense with his speedand power at tailback.

Speller (21 catches, 260 yards) movesfrom running back to slot receiver.

Also at receiver will be Kobe Gantz (29catches, 515 yards), who, with basketballscholarships on the table, could haveopted out of football.

“He wants to play out his senior year withthe guys he came up with,’’ Monzon said.

Speller’s brother, Isiah, will also be in thereceiver rotation.

“I think our offense will give defenses a lotto think about,’’ Randolph Speller said.

On the offensive line, Skylar Davis returnsat center along with Jose Acosta at rightguard. Ohwop Wilson is at right tacklewith Alex Rivera the leading candidate atleft guard.

Nate Luvice, who moved to Coatesvilleafter his freshman year at McCaskey, has returned to the Tornado. He was thestarting center for Coatesville, which was13-1 last season.

The good feeling produced by the winover CV was tempered when last seasonwas viewed by McCaskey’s linemen. In toomany instances, they were pushed around. That led to an off-season weight roomcommitment.

“We vowed that it’s not going to happenthis year,’’ Acosta said.

About the defense: Jordae Grove,Deandre Bacon, Wilson, Acosta andLuvice will be in the defensive linerotation.

The linebackers will be Greg Nunez,Will Brown, Julian Sitts, Perez (95 totaltackles) and Davis.

The Red Tornado will have Luis Abreu, atransfer from Hempfield, in the secondary,as well as RJ Godwin and Isiah Speller.

Intangibles: The Red Tornado need to thesee the fruits of their weight room labors.Mixing increased toughness with speedcould turn that 4-6 record into a winningseason.

Key to the season: Monzon seeks a morecontrolled offense. Big plays are greatbut “they can be like rolling the dice.Sometimes you get it, sometimes youdon’t,’’ he said. Monzon wants his team to

    control the game’s tempo.

Final word: Sibley (798 rushing yards,1,605 passing yards) and Kaire Bynum(38 catches, 448 yards) will be missed, but there is a lot of experience up fronton both sides of the ball and enough inthe skill positions to give the Tornado thebuilding blocks for success.

Knights’ new mantra: ‘Finish’ Zeiber’s team seeks to get over playoff hurdle

    TIM [email protected]

A double-overtime loss to Cum-berland Valley ended Hempfield’s2013 football campaign in the Dis-

trict Three Class AAAA quarterfi-nals. A triple-overtime loss to Cen-tral Dauphin East knocked out theKnights in the same round in 2014.

How do the players and coachesplan on changing the ending in2015?

“Our slogan for the year,” saidfifth-year head coach Ron Zeiber,“is just one word. It’s just ‘finish.’ And we’ve been stressing that at

every practice, every conditioningdrill and everything else. We’ve gotto finish. And, certainly, it’s in ourguys’ heads, and they know whatwe’re talking about.”

The Black Knights’ quest to ad- vance past the district quarterfinalsbegins when they host defendingSection Two champion Lampeter-Strasburg at 7 p.m. Sept. 4.

About the offense: After averaging337.8 yards and 26.4 points per gamein 2014, the Black Knights’ spreadoffense returns with familiar faces, including those of senior quarterbackSam Kramer (85-160, 1,212 yards,

Hempfield’s Sam Kramer eyes the end zone against Lampeter-Strasburg. Having gone85-160 for 1,212 yards and 10 touchdowns in 2014, Kramer returns for his senior season atquarterback.

10 touchdowns, seven INTs) and seniorall-purpose yards leader Will Blair (83rushes, 33 receptions, 1,416 yards, 10touchdowns).

“Will’s just everything,” Zeiber said.“Everywhere. He’s been that way for acouple years for us.”

Without the graduated Devin Washington(204 carries, 994 yards), the Hempfieldbackfield leans on Kramer (1,005 rushing

yards in 2014) and Blair (543) with ahandful of other returning rushers.

About the defense: Among Hempfield’sleaders stands 6-3, 211-pound senior

lineman Nate Trimble, the owner of whatZeiber calls a “nasty attitude” on the field.

“Everybody’s got to play with thatattitude,” Zeiber said. “We call it thatnasty switch. When they get on the field,

Blair, a linebacker, recorded 55tackles and forced four fumbles tocomplement 76 tackles by then-junior Wyatt Miller. The Knights’secondary includes seniors DarnellLathon (two interceptions in 2014).

“The whole concept of ourdefense,” Zeiber said, “is to getguys with speed in the mostpositions that we can. We don’talways get the bruisers that everycoach would like, but if we can getguys out there with some speedand some speed off the edge andsome outside linebackers who canjust run, then we think, in that typeof defense, that it’s a pretty bigadvantage.”

season.“When we get to that level,” hesaid, “when we get to the playoffs,we’ll be ready for that. We’ll havebeen competitors all year long.”

Final word: “It’s everything,” Blairsaid of the way his season hasended for two consecutive years.“It’s a lot of motivation. I know it’sburning in the back of all of ourheads, and we’re thinking of thatwhen we’re preparing. It’s a lot

There’s no “I” in team — orin Cedar Crest — and that’show the Falcons are approach-

ing their second season underhead coach Rob Wildasin.

“We have a great group ofguys,” Wildasin said. “I thinkwe’re pretty solid across theboard and that’s the way we’regoing to have to play and win,too — as kind of a collectiveteam effort — and I think wecan have an improved season.”

    There’s room to improve af-

ter last year’s 3-7 campaign —in which Cedar Crest won justtwo of its last nine games — andarguably the Falcons’ biggestname, returning first-teamwide receiver and defensiveback Evan Horn, knows theonly way up is as a team.

“Everyone sees me, but reallyit’s 10 other guys I wouldn’tbe able to do it without,” said

    Horn.

About the offense: Horn finishedsecond in the Lancaster-LebanonLeague at wide receiver lastseason with 40 receptions for 523yards and five touchdowns, butnow it will be senior Stevie Rodathrowing him the ball.

Roda saw some game action lastyear — in place of the injured JoshBucher (1,144 yards and 11 TDs)

    — and threw for 286 yards and atouchdown, playing time Wildasinbelieves will prove invaluable.

“He was able to experience it andI think that will definitely helphim this year, “ said Wildasin. “It’snot like he’s completely green —he’s not taking his first snap as astarting quarterback in our first

game, he’s done it before and Ithink he’ll do a great job.”

The Falcons’ overall offensefinished second-to-last in thesection last year, but Roda shouldbenefit from playing behind aveteran offensive line.

“Our offensive line is a lot moreexperienced this year with

everybody having played somekind of varsity time last year,” saidtwo-way lineman Alex Flocken.“Four out of the five started 10out of 10 games at one spot oranother.”

“It’s a totally different feel upfront,” Wildasin agreed.

Cedar Crest’s Stevie Roda, who saw some game action last year in placeof injured QB Josh Bucher, runs around Warwick’s Mason Eshleman. This year, Roda’s experience should prove valuable as he steps into thestarter’s role.

Comets look for room to grow New coach Brubaker’s can-dooutlook bodes well for young team

    ED GRUVER [email protected]

With only five returning lettermen and tworeturning starters, some see potential problemsfor Penn Manor’s football team in highly com-petitive L-L Section One.

New boss John Brubaker and his coachingstaff, however, see something else.

“Critics would say this (lack of experience) isnot a recipe for success,” Brubaker said. “But ourcoaching staff believes we have an uncommongroup of players and believes this team will besuccessful.”

Brubaker has known nothing but success inhis many years as defensive coordinator at Man-heim Central. Long regarded as one of the topdefensive minds not only in District Three but

in the state, Brubaker brings his can-do attitudeto a Comets program that knew its fair share ofsuccess under previous coach Todd Mealy.

“We need varsity playing experience and gamesituations to grow as a team,” Brubaker said.“But make no mistake, we will approach eachgame as one we will win.”

About the offense: Brubaker said junior Grant Gale ismoving from receiver to quarterback to replace thegraduated Tanner Erisman. Brubaker believes Galehas shown the “skill and leadership” necessary to be

effective in his new role as leader of the offense.

Gale will be under the direct supervision of offensivecoordinator Mike Burke, formerly the head coach atColumbia.

Seniors Carter Kinser and Jamal McCaskell returnto the backfield. Senior Andrew Brown is thelone returning offensive lineman owning varsityexperience.

Though subject to change, at time of writingpotential starters on offense include center DanMahoney, Brown and Justice Eshleman at guard and

Tyler Kiebler and either Mark Yoder or Kyle Groff attackle.

Blane Richardson and Cavan Zechman are projectedstarters at wideout, with Daniel Wolf and DanteWilliams getting playing time as well.

About the defense: Brubaker will maintain his DCduties and he likes what he sees in Kinser, whom hesaid “has the instincts to be a great linebacker.”

KELSIE NETZER | JOHN CURLEY CENTER

Joe Santiago and Dante Jones have shown promisein the 4-4 and 4-3 defensive fronts Brubaker favors.

Potential starters on defense are Jones and ColtonNoel at end, with Santiago and Brown at tackle.Groff and Kinser are inside linebackers, whileMcCaskell and RJ Swisher man the flanks. BenWright and Jonah Barley are also seeing time atoutside ’backer.

Richardson and Zechman are on the corners; Galeand Wolf are the safeties.

Special teams starters look to be Liam Hart (kicker);Alex Schievert (punter); Richardson, Kinser andMcCaskell (kick returners); and Richardson and Gale(punt returners).

Through the years theBarons have played Section Onesquads, lining up against Wilson,Warwick, Hempfield and Cedar Crest, and scrimmaging Penn Manor in thepreseason.

From his experience, Brubaker believesthe biggest difference between SectionOne and Two may be the size of theschools.

“Section One teams,” he said, “mayhave more depth because they’re bigger

    schools.”

Key to the season: How quickly theyounger Comets acclimate themselvesto varsity play will be vital to the team’ssuccess.

Final words: McCaskell on Brubaker:“He’s a really great coach. We’re glad tohave him.”

Kinser on Section One: “It’s always verycompetitive. We look forward to it.”

Brown on the team’s outlook: “We’relooking to have a great season.”

    Streaks roll with changes

New faces dotting the lineup, MT still has confidence

    JOHN WALK [email protected]

Change is evident on the Manheim Townshiproster heading into the 2015 campaign.

On offense, Township lost three starting line-men, its top two rushers, its bruising fullbackand two of last year’s top three ball-hawking

wideouts to graduation. On defense, the BlueStreaks must replace two linemen, two line-backers and just about their entire defensivesecondary.

About the offense: Fortunately for Manheim

Township, third-year signal-caller Erik Benjaminreturns after leading the Streaks to a second-placefinish in L-L Section One, an appearance in thedistrict quarterfinals and an 8-4 overall mark lastseason. The 6-foot, 215-pound Benjamin passed for2,108 yards a year ago, completing 148 of 232 (63.8percent) for 23 touchdowns and eight interceptions.

Unfortunately for Benjamin, some of the senior QB’s

top targets, Fisayo Ouleye and Isaac Vasquez, aregone. Plus, the team’s top returning wideout, seniorJohn Stutz (29 catches, 534 receiving yards, sevenTDs last season), might miss some time at the startof the season as he continues to recover from adislocated right elbow suffered at an offseason

ManheimTownshipdefendersTanner Ev-ans, left, andJohn Stutzclose in onWarwick’sMason Esh-leman last

season. BothEvans andStutz areback for theStreaks thisyear, thoughStutz maymiss sometime early ashe recoversfrom a dislo-cated rightelbow.

So it’s up to newcomers Riley MacDonald,Mike Sharpe, Alex Wade, Rece Bender,Dillon O’Connor and Alex Kepler, among

others, to battle it out at wideout in theStreaks’ spread/pro set offense.

Also keep an eye on 6-foot-4, 250-poundsophomore tight end/offensive guardDrake Puffenbarger being a bit of anuisance for opposing defenders.

“There’s definitely some things we needto work on,” senior lineman Tanner Evanssaid. “We need to get everyone on thesame page working on all cylinders andstuff. We’re still filling roles, finding outwho is gonna play where.”

    Evans (6-5, 245) will anchor the o-linealongside returning starters A.J. McCloud(6-3, 265) and Tim O’Hara (6-0, 225).

It remains to be seen who will leadthe ground game for the Blue Streaks, but in the final weeks of preseasoncamp, fourth-year head coach MarkEvans said he likes senior KadeKubicki at tailback and senior NateSeprinski at fullback. Also keep tabson senior Matt Van Gorden seeingsome carries.

About the defense: Tanner Evans (76tackles, two sacks last season) will alsoanchor the Streaks’ d-line alongside

That leaves seven remaining spots up forgrabs on the Manheim Township defense.

Despite all the holes needed to be filled,Coach Evans has confidence in this bunch. But it might take some time for the BlueStreaks to get rolling. Of course, Evanswould like to see that happen soonerrather later.

“You see the most dramatic improvementsof your football team between Weeks Oneand Two of the regular season,” Evanssaid. “So you don’t know until you getthat first game under your belt, you canonly see so much in the scrimmage. I thinit’d be great to see us get off to a greatstart.”

    2015 ROSTER

HEAD COACHLeaving frustrating ’14 behind Depth, experience should help Warriors move forward

    DAVE BYR [email protected]

Hopes were high in Lititz atthe dawn of the 2014 footballseason as Warwick looked toimprove on the previous year’s3-7 record.

But, with a defense that fin-

ished in the bottom third ofthe league statistically, and anoffense that finished 21st over-all — out of 23 teams — thosehopes were dashed as the War-riors came home 2-8, 1-6 in theL-L’s Section One.

A year older, a year wiser, thecogs of that offense are in placeonce more.

    Quarterback Colin Gibble (69

for 151 for 1,054 yards, 6 TDs/13INTs), went down late in theseason with an injury, but re-turns none the worse for wear, along with his backups TylerTrimarchi (19-32, 173, 1 TD)and Taylor Lentz (22-52, 159).

Gibble also ran 76 times for286 yards and three scores andis joined by returning backsRyan Deibler (74-298, 4 TDs)

and Isaac Rissinger (17-72). After missing all of ’13 with an

injury, tight end Justin Smithcaught four balls for 35 yards, while wideout Keegan Flahive, the Warriors’ top returning re-ceiver, finished with 14 catchesfor 188 yards.

About the offense: The Warriorswill run a one-back spread,“Most of it will be (shot)gun,

three wideouts, a tight end and arunning back,” says Locker.

“Our two leading rushers return. Our quarterback is back for asecond full year. We return threeoffensive linemen who startedevery game last year, plus acouple other linemen, and our

    starting tight end.

“If we’re a better football teamthis year it’s because of somechanges we’ve made in the last

two years that have started to paydividends.”

About the defense: “We gave up

Ryan Deibler, who had 298 yards on 74 carries and four touchdowns lastseason, returns at running back for Warwick.

way too many points (293, 16th in the league)and yards (350 per game, 17th overall) last year,”Locker says.

That said, the Warriors’ base 4-3 returns with

a 4-6 goal line look and, in certain situations/against certain opponents, Warwick will playsome stack.

Smith (98 tackles, 2 sacks) and Deibler (39tackles) return at linebacker with Flahive (30tackles, 1 INT) in the defensive backfield.

Intangibles: The Warriors’ pre-season roster is61 strong. “That’s more depth than we’ve had inyears,” says Locker.

“We have some sophomores who are makingserious progress. We have competition,” he

continues.“You talk about things that are better this timearound, we have people legitimately fighting for jobs right now. And, when you are being pushed,it makes you better.”

Key to the season: “If we’re successful thisseason,” forecasts Locker, “it will be because werun, and we throw when we want to, not when wehave to.”

Final word: “Two and eight’s not acceptable,”Locker says. “It’s not a motto we’re allowed to use,but ‘Shut Up and Hit Someone’ is kind of where

we’re at right now. We just want to get (practice)started. We just want to get to it and figure outwhere we are.”

About the defense: The Falcons’ defense, which finished in the middle of the section

last year, will see a lot of new faces in newspots this season.

Gone are players like honorable mentiondefensive back Dominic Garloff andsecond-team Section One linebackerDamon Edwards, whose role may now fallto Horn.

“Evan will be bouncing around betweenstrong safety and linebacker,” saidWildasin. “He’ll fill those shoes or at leastthat position literally sometimes, andat times he’ll bounce back to the safety

    spots.”

Intangibles: Practice makes perfect, and the Falcons are already noticinga difference in their second year inWildasin’s system.

when asked for the team’s biggeststrength. “(The key is to) stay healthyand follow the lead of the offensiveline — I think that they’re the busdrivers.”

    DIANA [email protected]

For Conestoga Valley, the2014 season showed a lot ofpromise, even if it may nothave translated to a lot of wins.

In the Buckskins’ first seasonin Section One, as well as theirfirst year playing in the Wing-Toffense and the 3-3-5 defense,

they finished third overall inboth statistical categories.

Given that extra year of ex-perience, head coach Mark Pi-eters is excited for what 2015could hold for his squad.

“We went to an air raid of-fense and usually the secondyear in that you can get to awhole new level, and I’m see-ing it already,” said Pieters.

“Our execution, our knowledgeof the scheme — I think were just leaps and bounds ahead ofwhere we were last year at thispoint.”

About the offense: As asophomore, Grant Stoltzfus threwfor 1,996 yards — the best inSection One — and both Pietersand the signal caller think hecan be even better in his junior

campaign.“I think I got better at readingthe coverages and knowing myprogressions a lot better than lastyear, so I think that’ll help,” saidStoltzfus.

“He’s just smooth in running theshow,” added Pieters. “We let him

call some plays on his own now.He knows the system, he feelscomfortable in the system andI think he is going to have a bigyear for us.”

With Joel Lopez and his 780yards and 11 touchdowns goneto graduation, the Buckskins willturn to junior Connor Brinton atrunning back.

Pieters notes the speedster“makes great cuts on the insidezone,” and he’s not the only one

    taking notice.

“He’ll definitely be able to dowhat Joel did,” two-way linemanKole Martin said of Brinton.“He’s more of a speed back ascompared to, Joel is more of apower back. Connor will definitelybe able to carry the load for us.”

About the defense: Martin — asecond team all-star last year —will be back to lead the line, butthe highlight for the defense sofar has been speed.

Only one starting linebackerreturns, but Pieters is confidentthat track sprinter Andy Millerwill make a difference and “couldreally run some players down.”Brinton will also slot in a strongsafety, while Tyler Humphrevillewill start at corner.

Daulton Martin also returns fromtwo years ago, when he wasnamed first team All-Section atfree safety in Section Two.

Intangibles: “Our wide receivers,I think that’ll be our biggestsurprise,” said Stoltzfus.

Key to the season: “I think our defensewas pretty good last year, but I think ouroffense is going to be what carries usthrough this year,” said Martin.

Let’s start with rawnumbers. Wilson began

preseason camp with a rosterof more than 80 players. Mc-Caskey and Cedar Crest had75. Warwick, Manheim Town-

ship and Lampeter-Strasburgall had 60 or more.

Which is to say, high schoolfootball remains popularround these parts, not onlywith fans but, evidently, withteenage boys and (crucially)their parents.

Still, in an age of concus-sion awareness, when

the essential safety of footballis questioned more than ever,

some L-L coaches say theymust sell their sport as never

    before.“It’s tough to convince

Mom,’’ said L-S coach JohnManion, who acknowledgedthat the problem is mostlyat the youth level for now.“A lot of parents have a lot ofconcerns.’’

“If you’re looking for a violentsport, look at boys’ lacrosse,’’said Warwick coach Bob

Locker. “Football gets (a badrep) because of exposure; look

at the amount of football on TVcompared to any other sport.’’

The PIAA is con-sidering going to a

six-class structure for thefootball postseason start-ing as soon as the 2016season. An informal pollof coaches at L-L mediaday found a vast majority

of coaches in favor of sixclasses, which would put

the schools-per-champi-onship ratio closer to thatof most other states.

The six-class setup wouldalso shorten the season if, asexpected, it includes start-ing the season a week earlier, perhaps by eliminating onescrimmage. Everybody seemsto favor that.

    Paradigm shift

Barons seem to be taking big changes in stride

    ED GRUVER [email protected]

For the past two decadesManheim’s Central’s footballprogram stood astride DistrictThree Class AAA like a colos-sus.

    The Barons won 16 district

championships, including anastonishing 10 straight.Over the past half-decade,

though, a new behemoth hasbestrode Triple-A. Bishop

McDevitt has won five straighttitles and is halfway to tying amark once thought unassail-able — Central’s 10 consecu-tive crowns. The past two yearshave seen the Crusaders beatthe Barons in the postseason.

Now, for the first time in 35

years, the task of taking Centralto the top falls to a new man.Longtime offensive line coachDave Hahn has succeeded Hallof Fame head coach Mike Wil-

liams, the latter remaining ostaff as an assistant.

To handle the defense Hahhas hired former Cedar Creshead coach Tom Waranavage. In other moves regarding thecoaching staff, assistants JoeMack and Tom Getz, former

head coaches at LancasterCatholic and Hempfield, re-spectively, have stepped down.

Change, then, is in the air a
