Succeed at UBC this year by making time for movement. Moving allows us to deal with stress, build new friendships, and maintain our bodies to think clearly and critically.

Ruth has been involved with UBC Recreation since she started working at UBC. By making physical activity a part of her routine, she has improved her overall health and increased her stamina for working, volunteering, and travelling.

“I don’t always get to the gym or to organized activities but I always do my routine at home. Working with a personal trainer has helped keep me on track. She has introduced me to new exercises I can do anywhere and has refined my technique so that I get the most benefit from them.

Ruth WarickSenior Diversity AdvisorUBC Access & Diversity

All of our community belongs at UBC Recreation. Our programs and events are inclusive: we offer fun, beginner level options designed for the diverse population and abilities of the UBC community. We are proud to incorporate all abilities and peoples into our programs and events, so please contact us at 604.827.3872 if you have questions or concerns.

E V E R Y O N E I S W E L C O M E ! To achieve health benefits,

adults should strive for at least 150 minutes of moderate- to vigorous-intensity aerobic physical activity per week, in bouts of 10 minutes or more, while youth should have at least 60 minutes of activity every day.

At UBC Recreation, we offer a variety of fun programs and events for all ages and abilities. Physical activity doesn’t have to happen in structured classes. Activity can take a variety of forms — such as walking the long route to class in the morning, taking the stairs to the top of the library to study, dropping in for a Boot Camp class over lunch, or playing pick-up basketball with friends in the evening.

In his first year at UBC, Derek participated in multiple intramural events and leagues, and could regularly be found at the BirdCoop or the Aquatic Centre. He is looking forward to participating in Day of the Longboat and Storm the Wall during his second year.

“My involvement has helped me improve my overall health and was a great way to meet new friends and blow off school-related stress. Playing sports or working out kept me focused, whether I was studying for an upcoming midterm or preparing for important assignments.

Lori has been an active participant at the UBC Tennis Centre since 2011, working with our staff and coaches to develop a social and competitive women’s tennis team. Spanning generations, their teams are inclusive to all ages and skill levels and have competed across the lower mainland in the Miele Spring Ladies League, winning their division in 2015.

“After the first day, I was hooked. The lessons were not only challenging but also so much fun and great exercise. Since then, the UBC Tennis Centre helped us build a community of tennis players of all abilities, athletes, parents, competitors, and participants, who above all have fun together while remaining fit.

Kimberley and her 8-year-old daughter have been involved in UBC Recreation Youth programs for three years, taking swimming and skating lessons on campus in addition to many summer camp experiences, including Soccer, Storm The Campus, Ropes Course, Tennis, Bike Hike, Sailing, and Musical Theatre.

“We had just moved to Vancouver and I was looking for a way for our daughter to meet other kids her age when I discovered UBC Camps. She loves the variety of camps — she can be on the soccer field one week and spend her days in the pool the following week. She is excited to learn new skills throughout the summer, and I am very happy with the quality of instructors involved in the programs.

*UBC Students must book in person with a valid student ID to receive discounted rate during applicable times.

The UBC Tennis staff make learning tennis fun and easy with a stress free, learning-centered environment. Start with our 1.0 Clinic to learn the basics of the game, connect with other new people, and be shown how to play matches. Next, check out our Friday Night Tennis sessions running in November — you can have a fun and competitive singles or doubles match against someone with the same level of skills. If you’re ready for regular play, consider our 1.5/2.0 Doubles League — this 5-week long league runs on Tuesdays and Sunday throughout the term. Find out more at recreation.ubc.ca/tennis.

UBC Recreation hosts iconic events nearly every week throughout the school year at varying levels of competition. Whether you register as a team with your friends or you want to sign up as an individual to meet people with similar interests, there’s always something fun and active to do.

The most traditional way to find a team is to talk to your friends, coworkers, classmates, or roommates to find people who are also interested in participating.

Once you have a team, for certain events like Day of the Longboat and Storm the Wall, you can register as a Just For Fun team or a Competitive team:

Competitive: Represent your Faculty or other community and compete for points — teams at this level will participate in timing heats, with the top teams going head-to-head in final heats.

Just For Fun: Single heats and non-timed events, this level is open to all skill levels and abilities.

You can also sign up to be a free agent for most of our events and leagues. For some of our most popular events, UBC Recreation hosts meetings to help individuals find a team.

Fall Softball: September 14Day of the Longboat: September 21

Water Wars: November 9

Come out and meet like-minded people who are also interested in these experiences! All meetings will take place at the SRC at 5:00 pm on the scheduled date.

Each student, staff, and faculty member at UBC is eligible to compete for individual Earl Points and represent their community or unit through the UBC Recreation Intramurals Divisional Structure. Every intramural event and league has a baseline of participation points that is awarded to each participant, with additional points awarded based on results in certain leagues and events. UBC Recreation categorizes dozens of groups on campus into different divisions so that like-groups are competing against teams of similar size and skill-level where possible. This goes for large groups, like faculties and residences, to smaller groups, like AMS Clubs and Greek Societies. UBC Recreation celebrates its champions at a year-end Hall of Fame Banquet.

TRIPLE CROWNIn 2014–15, we had two teams win the elusive Triple Crown award. Faculty of Engineering — Men’s and Faculty of Kinesiology — Women’s each won their division for Day of the Longboat, Great Trek, and Storm the Wall.

To learn more about the intramural point system and awards, visit recreation.ubc.ca/awards.
