WOW, what a couple months it has been in the Microsoft Dynamics AX
User community. From a record AXUG® Summit in Tampa, to exciting
announcements on the Microsoft Dynamics AX product front, to a great User
group day at Convergence EMEA in Barcelona, things have been hopping!
With everything going on, it might be easy to forget about the theme of this month’s magazine
and instead just focus on all these great events and announcements, but that would be a mistake.
Many Members have told me over the past two years how much they enjoy the magazine and the
themes covered. This issue is no different, with the theme of Supply Chain Management (SCM).
I can remember when I first installed Axapta back in 2002. At that time, there was a
Warehouse One and Warehouse Two module that provided some pretty cool functionality
to help in our warehouse and distribution areas. A lot has changed since then, with more and
more SCM functionality being included in both the base Microsoft Dynamics AX product
and supplemented by many great add-ons from the ISV channel. As technology has evolved at
the same time, with slates and smartphones, the needs of Users in the SCM area has changed,
and Microsoft Dynamics AX has continued to meet that demand. The recent announcements
around new SCM functionality in Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 R3 are just the latest example
of the growth of the product in these areas. That’s a lot to keep track of, but in this issue, we
highlight many of these items and also spend time reviewing some “old school” SCM content
like EDI. Even back in 2002, my company had EDI needs with Axapta. The need for EDI hasn’t
changed, and our panel discussion provides a great overview.
Please take the time to read this issue front to back. The tips and tricks can be applied
immediately to help you be more successful with Microsoft Dynamics AX. The SCM content
will explain how Microsoft Dynamics AX can enable your company to do more both internally
and externally to improve your warehouse and distribution operations. SCM, much like
business intelligence, continues to evolve, which was a top reason for addressing it in this issue.
There’s also information about AXUG Summit and the success of 1,000 Members converging
in sunny Tampa for a week of unparalleled networking and knowledge sharing. Yes, AXUG
Summit 2013 was truly a great event, with more than 230 breakout sessions, a motivating
keynote from coach Tony Dungy, the huge Expo Hall, and the 5 o’clock Somewhere Regional
Chapter session where a couple hundred AXUG Members met with Users from their city or
region. I would be remiss not to thank the 130 speakers, numerous volunteers, and AXUG staff
that all contributed to make Summit such a success. The bar will be raised even higher in St.
Louis for the 10th AXUG Summit, but I believe the AXUG community is up to the challenge!
Finally, I want to remind the AXUG community to continue to use the AXUG Collaborate tool
as your “one stop shop” for knowledge sharing and networking. Since we rolled out Community.
AXUG.com at Convergence 2013, thousands of AXUG Members have created profiles, joined
the 30+ online communities, and posted hundreds of questions and replies in the discussion
boards. AXUG Collaborate continues to grow, so if you have not taken advantage of this great
AXUG benefit, there’s no time like the present to do so. I promise you will not be disappointed.
See you in Atlanta for Convergence 2014, or perhaps at an upcoming AXUG Regional
Chapter or Global Branch meeting!

For several years, the Minnesota Chapter of AXUG® has made an
annual trip to the Fargo, North Dakota campus of Microsoft. It is a
trip that everyone looks forward to and is not limited to Minnesota
Chapter Members – all AXUG Members are welcome! This year
we met for two days of sessions and networking in mid-September.
There were more than 80 Microsoft Dynamics AX Users in
attendance – the largest turnout we’ve had to date. Outside of
AXUG Summit, this was the largest AXUG-sponsored event of
the year. Microsoft did an outstanding job of hosting us at their
Executive Briefing Center on the Fargo campus. Lunches were
included, and we enjoyed a reception with dinner one night.
Because we met at the Fargo campus, many Microsoft Dynamics
AX engineers and product managers were available to give us a
number of excellent presentations. The presentations were divided
into two tracks: technical and functional. In all, there were more
than 20 presentations given by Microsoft and Partners on a large

I have been involved with the New England Chapter of AXUG since
January 2011. The group was formed prior to this time but had gone
inactive until Green Beacon stepped in to help revive momentum in
the New England area. The efforts have paid off, and we have been
meeting every quarter since with an average of 22 attendees.
Mark Erikson and I organize the meetings as best we can around
the needs of the group. Part of our agenda is a roundtable where we
openly discuss current issues or things we’d like to see in the future.
It is from these roundtables that we are able to assess the needs of
the meeting population and start our search for relevant meeting
sponsorship. A number of vendors have graciously stepped up to the
task and provided us with presentations around electronic document
capture, BI, and reporting solutions as well as EDI. Since the majority
of our Member companies are running Microsoft Dynamics AX 2009,
our most recent undertaking is to get help understanding Microsoft
Dynamics AX 2012 and the future roadmap of the solution so we can
make the best decisions possible for our respective companies.
New Life for the New England Chapter
by Barbara Maraglia, chapter leaderIt’s been amazing to me that as a group we have so many similar
struggles, and that in some cases, we are able to jointly work on
solutions. Through my involvement with this group, we have been
able to identify a mutual need and hire developers to work on
solutions while splitting costs. Situations like this are definitely
win-win for all involved.
One thing that I believe has made us stronger as a group is that
we continue to communicate with each other outside of our regular
quarterly meetings. Our group is on LinkedIn, so it’s simple for
anyone at any time to get assistance. We also try to keep an updated
list of folks who have attended our meetings so if we need topic clarity,
it’s easy to reach out to the group, but more importantly, we are able
to send personal reminders of planned meeting agendas and meeting
dates to the group to help keep them engaged between meetings.
Last summer we changed up our regular meeting agenda a bit
by meeting at one of our Member companies. This was the most
attended meeting yet with 39 in attendance! It was fun to see
how they use Microsoft Dynamics AX, what they do outside of
Microsoft Dynamics AX that needs to then interface with it, and
to understand more about their company in general. We hope to be
able to do more of this down the road either by visiting a Member
company or by having them present at our regular meeting.
I don’t see 2014 being much different for us. We will continue
to solicit topic suggestions from our group so the meetings are
meaningful and worthwhile for our Members to attend. Our
quarterly meetings are already booked for January, April, July, and
October, and we hope to continue delivering topics our Members are
interested in as well as growing the average meeting size.
AXUG TOLA Looks for a Great Year Ahead
by Eric Hintz, chapter leader
The recent AXUG® TOLA (Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, and
Arkansas) Regional Chapter meeting in Houston was a success!
Twenty attendees were present to share User experiences and
learn from one another. Clive Wiley from TARGIT gave a terrific
presentation on the company’s business intelligence (BI) platform.
Another great component of the meeting was the Customer
experience presentation. Arhan Dundan from Gurwitch Products
showed how his company utilizes Microsoft Dynamics AX in its
business, including how the solution interacts with eCommerce, EDI,
and other third party integrations.
Planning for 2014 rounded out the meeting. Members provided
feedback, ideas, and input, and topics of interest and potential
speakers/vendors for the year ahead were identified. AXUG TOLA
looks forward to a tremendous 2014! AXUG

How long have you been a Regional Chapter/Global Branch leader?
Since about June 2011. The New England Chapter had been dormant for some time, and
Green Beacon got us going again in January 2011. At that time, they introduced about
15 of us to AXUG and asked for a couple of folks to step up and lead the group. I, along
with Mark Erikson of Bemis Associates, Inc., stepped up and have been co-leading the
chapter ever since.
What’s the most valuable aspect of the chapter/branch meetings?
The networking. You can’t put a price on the knowledge and training you get from your
peers. To also find out that you have similar requirements and can combine efforts on
projects has been a big help. Our chapter meets once per quarter, and we always make sure
there is time for our roundtable discussions. There is so much knowledge in the room that
it’s been very useful to tap into everyone’s knowledge. Not one person knows the answer;
rather it’s a combination of people that makes our chapter work more as an extended team instead of separate companies.
What do you enjoy most about your AXUG membership?
The expertise we have the ability to tap into. Regardless if someone is with a Member company, a Partner, or a vendor, we all get
the time to share our knowledge and help each other learn and grow.
What was your favorite topic at a past chapter/branch meeting?
One thing I think we have been good about with our chapter meetings is to highlight Partner companies that meet the interests
of the majority of our Members. Every single one of these topics has had something that could be applied back at the office. I for
one can’t pin-point a favorite topic and hope that the group feels the same way.

How long have you been a Regional Chapter/Global Branch leader?
Since July 2013
What’s the most valuable aspect of the chapter/branch meetings? Networking with other Microsoft Dynamics AX Users and learning from their
experiences are the two most valuable items of regional meetings. It is a great feeling
to learn about a fix another company found that would solve the same issue that my
company is having. Having vendors showcase a product or solution also helps because I
can ask more detailed questions about the product to the speaker than simply going to
the vendor’s website to view general information about the product.
What do you enjoy most about your AXUG membership?
There are two main reasons I enjoy my AXUG Premium membership. First, the annual
AXUG Summit is worth its weight in gold. My company is an AXUG Premium Member and receives a discount on registration
which saves several hundred dollars. I network with peers who have similar Microsoft Dynamics AX modules and customizations
as me. I also take academy-led training at AXUG Summit, and I always learn better ways to utilize Microsoft Dynamics AX.
Second, I enjoy the regional meetings. I love finding local Microsoft Dynamics AX Users that I can network with. The chapter
meeting is a short drive which saves time and money.
What was your favorite topic at a past chapter/branch meeting?
The Customer experience portion of the meeting was most valuable. The Microsoft Dynamics AX end User explained how
his company used Microsoft Dynamics AX with several other integrations. He explained the challenges and lessons learned of
choosing a Microsoft Dynamics AX implementation Partner, his current challenges, and the desired future state of his ERP. The
Customer experience story is an invaluable part of the chapter meeting.

Discontinued Inventory Items
12 Replies | Posted by Kaitlyn Peot on August 9 at 5:25 p.m.
Hi, I am wondering if anyone has a process for deactivating/getting
rid of discontinued items. Soon we’ll be clearing out all inventory and
replacing it with new. When that happens we’ll no longer have a use
for 75% of our current items. As I understand it, there is no way to
delete an item. Knowing that, when I pull reports they will contain all
items, discontinued and not. That is not ideal and ultimately I would
like to be able to delete the item, anyone find something that works
comparable to the item actually being deleted? Thanks for any input.

Statistical General Ledger
Accounts in AX 2012 R2???
9 Replies | Posted by Dan Naser on August 28 at 12:34 p.m.
Is there a way in AX2012 R2 to create statistical accounts to track
metrics such as department headcount, etc. - so that the value/
balances associated with the statistical account can be used for future
calculations such as allocations? I see there is a statistical Main Account
Category however I do not see a Main Account Type for statistical?
Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

MRP: Ignore Purchase Orders that
are Not Posted
9 Replies | Posted by Eric Lepage on August 30 at 4:26 p.m.
Hello, as soon as a P.O. is created, it is considered by the MRP
calculations. We would like to take in consideration only those P.O.
that have at least been posted.
The “include inventory transactions” checkbox in the master plan
parameter form indicates whether the MRP process will used pending
transactions, like purchase orders, in the calculation process.
However, is there any way to somehow configure this parameter so
it will take into account only the P.O.’s that have been posted (posting
- purchase order). Or as an alternative, only P.O.’s which have physical
quantity received (posting - receipt list).
The documentation indicates that it is the case for production
orders: “production orders that are not yet registered as physical
receipts”. Regards.

Master Scheduling Quitting
Halfway Through Product List
9 Replies | Posted by Tom Cook on October 23 at 10:40 a.m.
Hey folks, So, we’ve been running into an issue with Master
Scheduling on a fairly frequent basis: it will often, when run, get
about 20%, halfway, or 75% or so through the SKU set it has been
tasked to run planned orders for and then decide that it is finished,
for no discernible reason other than petulance or outright malice.
We deal with it by re-running master scheduling on different
computers until it does what we want it to do, which, needless to
say, is a whole lot of fun.
Has anyone else encountered this issue? If so, were you able to
more permanently fix it? Thanks.

Inventory-Excess and Obsolete
11 Replies | Posted by Aaron Newman on October 29 at 10:48 a.m.
Hi, I’m looking for ideas or processes to identify the excess and
obsolete inventory in 2009. We are getting ready for physical
inventory and we’re looking for a way to identify what parts we
have on hand that have zero usage over the past X amount of
months (or years). I don’t see any canned reports but I’m also new
to AX and it’s possible I’m missing a canned routine or process
that does what we’re looking for. I thought maybe it could be
identified via SQL Query by some type of a join from InventTable
and InventTrans...the problem is if you haven’t used it, then
there wouldn’t be any entries to InventTrans so how would you
write it? I know this isn’t a new area for companies, especially in
manufacturing, so I’m hoping there’s someone here who can help.
Thanks!

Quantities in Financial Reports
9 Replies | Posted by Pascal Quellet on October 31 at 8:40 a.m.
Hi everyone, We are a manufacturing company implementing
AX 2012 R2, For us, quantities (sold, produced, hours worked...)
would ideally be presented along with our Financial data in reports
(for example, with the actual cost of a production department).
Ideally, we would like to populate the quantity field in the GL
posting along with the actual transaction. Do anybody ever tried
to do this? Any thoughts or suggestions?

“One of the things that
drew us to Microsoft
Dynamics AX is the
familiar Windows look
and feel of it,” says James
Harrington, director of technology services with
Wirtz Beverage Group, which is a leading distributor
of luxury and premium wine, spirits, and beer brands
as well as non-alcoholic beverages. The company
does $2 billion in annual sales in the states of Illinois
– where it’s headquartered – and Iowa, Minnesota,
Nevada, and Wisconsin.
Prior to deploying the technology, James recalls
a heavily siloed environment. “Each state operation
of ours not only had a different name, but also
its own set of systems as well,” he says. “It made
sharing and consolidating financial statements
very difficult. We wanted to bring it all together to
alleviate the pain points.”
Specific items on the wish list for the new
system included more visibility into data and more
repeatable, efficient processes across all states.
“Our monthly closing statements were different
for each state,” James recalls when asked for an
example of the challenges presented by silos. “So
we’d review each state separately.”
Once Microsoft Dynamics AX was chosen,
James realized that the Windows look and feel
was but the beginning of the benefits. “Instead
of the platform dictating how we do things, the
configurability and extensibility make it possible
to accommodate our processes,” he says.
Today, Wirtz entrusts all of its general
accounting, master data management, and pricing
to Microsoft Dynamics AX. The solution does
indeed provide a consolidated view of the business
from a financial perspective. “It tells us how
individual units are performing so that corrective
action can be taken proactively if necessary,” James
says.
The information, he reports, is not only more
accurate, but also available more quickly. “With
pricing changes, many times we had to wait to get
an accurate view of revenue and profit from 30 to
45 days after the end of the month,” he says. “Now
we have an accurate view on a daily basis.” One
of many areas where that’s beneficial concerns
chargebacks – the term for the incentives paid by
suppliers whose products Wirtz sells. “Once we’ve
sold it, we can send documentation to the supplier
much more quickly than we used to be able to,”
James says.
He’s also very pleased with the newfound ability
to deliver on a shared services model. “We’re
able to implement and deliver things such as HR
programs across different groups and different

state lines,” he says. “We had separate systems before, so this enables
us to grow more profitably.”
Overall, James is pleased with Microsoft Dynamics AX. “It does
what we wanted to it do,” he says. “For us, the challenge was in
changing behavior. Our Users have had to get used to the amount of
information that became available. There’s a methodology that takes
some getting used to, and if you don’t know how to look at it, it’s
almost too much data.”
In the future, James says he’s looking forward to taking advantage
of the Microsoft Dynamics AX modules that he’s not currently using,
such as those for expense management and purchase requisitions.
The Project Management module was implemented, but due to
timing, only in one unit. “We’re circling back now to do more and
further leverage what we have in the solution,” he says.
As it stands, in addition to Microsoft Dynamics AX, Wirtz relies
on separate solutions for the core areas of warehouse management
and purchasing. “It would be nice if they ran on the same system,”
James says. At Convergence, he attended development sessions and
said the previews were very encouraging. “We’ll take a serious look at
the upgrade path and what we need to do.”
In the meantime, he says that rather than relying on an external
implementer, Wirtz is bringing the development work in-house.
While the company hired its first Microsoft Dynamics AX
developer only a year ago, the transition to being 100 percent
sufficient is already well underway. And that transition, he says,
will likely mean that rather than only answering questions in online
discussions hosted by AXUG, the company will likely be asking
them as well. AXUG

As with everything in life, it’s good to start with the facts.
You’ve likely heard the term “EDI” flying around the
last couple of years. Outside of defining the acronym
as electronic data interchange (and maybe even that
was a stretch), do you know what EDI is??
AXUG® sat down with a User and two Partners who work in EDI
every day. They say that by far the most popular question they receive
is, “What is it?” So, if you’ve been unfamiliar with the ins and outs of
EDI to this point, you’re not alone.
What is EDI?
To get the ball rolling, I asked our interviewees to define EDI in
their own terms:
“EDI is a “standard” in which two companies can exchange data
electronically, allowing both parties to transact business in a seamless
and efficient manner,” says Christian Fordham, an EDI User and
director of business applications for New Sunshine, LLC.
According to Mike Gross, vice president of the EDI and supply
chain essentials group at Accellos, EDI is best defined as, “a standard
language used to orchestrate business-to-business transaction
exchanges, such as moving inventory throughout a supply chain
network, invoicing and payment reconciliation, healthcare claims
processing, etc.”
Rounding out the message, Dennis Bruce, director of business
development for Data Masons Software, says EDI is, “the ability for
a company to transact business electronically with other businesses
using ‘standards-based’ messages.”
Unfamiliar Territory
“Often times when I’m talking with people regarding EDI, I try to
figure out why they’re interested,” says Dennis. “Many are doing it
because their customers are forcing them; others want to do it for
the benefits that come from that electronic relationship and process
automation.”
“As Dennis said, adoption is often driven by mandates within an
industry,” says Mike. “If a User is not familiar with EDI, we’ll explain
the multiple methods and options available for managing EDI.
EDI is a functional process that overlaps multiple disciplines, and
it’s important that Users understand how to interpret compliance
requirements and the business processes that EDI can automate.”
Christian agrees with both Dennis and Mike, sharing that he
receives questions from colleagues within his own organization about
EDIBR

whether or not EDI can help them with one business need or another.
“Many people don’t have an understanding of what EDI is or what
it can do, as well as what it can’t do,” says Christian. “Once we get into
a discussion and really dig into requirements to get a feel for why
they want to use EDI, I’m able to provide some direction as to what
the best options and tools might be to make life a little bit easier. For
example, if we have one small customer buying only a few products,
it doesn’t make sense to start EDI with that customer.”
Who is a Good Candidate for an EDI
Solution?
One of the most important things to understand is that EDI is not
one-sided.
“In discussions I’ve had with fellow Users, I try to get an
understanding of whether they have a current EDI presence or if
they’re just throwing out an idea, hoping it will provide a solution
for them,” says Christian. “EDI is not a one-sided deal. Both the User
and the organizations they’re working with need to be set up to give
and receive information. Once I know where they stand with EDI, I’m
better able to help them figure out a solution.”
For Mike, a good candidate can also be defined by the number of
transactions they exchange with business partners each week and
how much time is spent manually processing those transactions.
“If somebody is evaluating EDI as an initiative for their organization,
an essential step is to review the supply chain network that is engaged
with the delivery of inventory or services to customers. They should
also review their order to cash and procure to pay processes to identify
areas that can be automated,” says Mike. “If the organization is doing
100 or more transactions a week, that’s a lot of manual work and
room for error. EDI minimizes the potential for mistakes and down-
line supply disruptions, lowers PO processing costs, and tightens
up processes so as change occurs, the change is handled through a
system-iterated process rather than phone calls and emails.”
Mike also shares that EDI capabilities can elevate your positioning
with potential new business partners that prefer or mandate EDI as a
method of exchanging business transactions.
“Nobody will ever tell you that entering data is a core competency
for their business, and data entry is one of the main reasons why
people enter an EDI discussion,” says Dennis. “If you’re looking to
increase your business but want to do it in a fashion that doesn’t
require you to increase headcount, then EDI may make sense for you
as it gives you the ability to transact with any company – whether
that’s a customer, vendor, third-party logistics provider, or carrier
– 24/7 without increasing headcount as the accuracy and speed of
how you process transactions improves immensely over your team’s
manual data entry capabilities.”
Putting Your Best Foot Forward
As with anything, there are best practices associated with EDI that
can help an organization find a greater level of success.
“Success with EDI starts at the foundation, during the configuration,”
says Christian. “As you bring in an information trading partner, it’s
critical that both parties have a good, firm understanding of the
transactions they’ll conduct and that during the project a high level
of testing has occurred all the way through the system, including the
exchange of EDI documentation. This is critical.”
“Another thing that was key for us in our business is that we have a
person in an EDI coordinator role whose responsibility is to monitor
the EDI transactions that occur each day, checking for errors and
making sure transactions are completed successfully,” continues
Christian. “Sometimes a partner will send awkward item numbers
or documents will get stuck. It’s key to have somebody monitor the
system to catch things that are outside the norm. A company that
doesn’t have something like this in place is probably causing problems
that they don’t know about.”
“Those are great thoughts from Christian,” says Mike. “In general,
we try to provide the recommendation for Users to automate their
workflows so that you can manage by exception, just responding
when a true exception has occurred that requires attention from a
business User.”
“If you think about manufacturers and distributors selling into
large companies across the globe, there are numerous compliance
requirements, and a lot of companies don’t have the resources
to have one person own compliance, so it’s a shared function,”
continues Mike. “Another best practice is to ensure your organization
understands your trading partners’ compliance requirements
and builds discipline within your organization and processes to
minimize non-conformance to requirements as non-conformance
can introduce significant chargebacks, disruptions, and damaged
scorecard performance with key accounts.”
“Mike is correct; managing by exception is a big deal,” says Dennis.
“Being in a position where you have a fully automated EDI solution
and are able to manage by exception, receiving notifications when
things are processed, properly or improperly, is key.”
“A final best practice I would share is to set up audit reports for
specific transactions or trading partners. These types of reports can
strengthen a managing by exception process by delivering intelligent
and timely notifications that help you stay up-to-date with the
information you need to run your business efficiently.”
The Future of EDI
“EDI is, in reality, a format for what electronic documents look like,”
says Dennis. “There are other formats out there now. For example,
Europe uses a lot of XML and ‘ASCII’ formatted documents, and they
want those documents formatted to fit within an EDI solution, so that
change of accepting and translating different document types with
EDI solutions is becoming an industry requirement.”
“One trend that has driven significant change is the emergence
of multi- or Omni-channel fulfillment, meaning that consumers are
dictating how products are supplied to them and their customers. This
means that manufacturers and distributors will have to deal with new
EDI and fulfillment requirements to ship individual packages directly
to consumers,” says Mike. “The biggest fundamental change in the
industry will be a continued shift towards cloud-based technology,
which moves management of data communication, translation, and
compliance validation to a hosted service versus on-premise model.”
“I agree with Mike,” concludes Christian. “I don’t see much out
there to replace how we’re currently doing business. EDI is there, it
works, and it works well. Managing the exceptions in that process
makes it fairly simple.” AXUG

Power View is a great tool for creating dashboards and analytics
for Microsoft Dynamics AX; you can easily embed it into Role
Centers to create summary dashboards, you can use it to drill into
offending statistics that you notice, and you can easily create new
dashboards using the new Analyze button in Microsoft Dynamics
AX 2012 R2. But what would be even better would be having context-
sensitive dashboards built into the actual master data forms. You
would then be able to see statistics and trends against the data that
you are focused on. Fortunately, that is not very hard to do.
In this example, we will show how you can easily create a new
dashboard through Power View and then embed it within the
Microsoft Dynamics AX forms to display just the statistics that you
are looking for.
Creating a Customer Summary
Dashboard
The first step in the process is to create a new Power View
Dashboard that you will embed into your master forms. Once you
have done this, you can continue to tweak the view later on and not
have to do any further coding.
How to do it...
To build a simple Customer analysis dashboard, follow these steps:
» Start off by finding your Power View Data Sources and creating
a new reporting canvas. In this example, we will use the Sales
cube as our data source.
Embedding Power View Dashboards within Microsoft Dynamics AX Formsby Murray Fife
» Build your dashboard from the available dimensions and measures
in the cube. We just summarized the sales by date period and
also listed out all of the products that the Customers have bought.
Note: Don’t put any filters on this form. We will apply filters in
the code later on.
» Once you have finished building the dashboard, select the Save As
option from the File menu. When the Save As dialog box shows up,
give your new dashboard a name and then click the Save button.
t t&TIPS & TRICKS
18 | AXUG Magazine
How it works...
Now if you return to the Power View reports library, you will see
the new report that you just created.
If you open it, then you will see your report in view mode.
Embedding the Dashboard into the
Customer Form
Once you have designed your dashboard, it is time to add it to your
forms. This will allow you to browse through the records and see
statistics alongside the original field data in Microsoft Dynamics AX.
Getting Ready
In this example, we will extend out the CustTable form, which
normally looks like this:
How to do it...
To add the Power View dashboard to a form in Microsoft Dynamics
AX, follow these steps:
» Open up the AOT and create a new project for the change. Then
copy the CustTable form over to the new project.
» Expand the form definition until you are able to access all of the
UpperGroup set of controls which houses the definition for the
main form layout.
Winter 2014 | 19
» Right-click on the UpperGroup form and from the New Control
sub menu, select the Group item. Rename the group, and then
set the Width to 600 and the Height to 512. We do this so that
you can see the dashboard when it is displayed on the form; the
default sizing for the control is a little narrow.
» Then right-click on the new group that you added and select the
ActiveX option from the New Control sub menu. When the
ActiveX browser is displayed, find the Microsoft Web Browser
control and add it to the group.
» Give your new ActiveX control a more appropriate name, and
also set the Width to Column Width, and the Height to Column
Height so that it fills the container.
» Now open up the Methods at the parent table level, and
right-click on the Methods group. Open up the Override
method sub-menu and select the activate method. When
the method editor opens up, add the following lines of code.
Note: In the second line of the url variable definition, note the
name of the report. This needs to match the name of the report
that you created in the prior section.
» If you save the project and then open up the Customer form, you
will see the Power View dashboard is now shown.
t t&TIPS & TRICKS
20 | AXUG Magazine
» Unfortunately, this allows the User to edit the form. To fix that,
update the code to include a couple more qualifiers.
» Now when you open up the form, you will just see the report.
» The final step in the process it to add some filters to the
code so that it will only show the data that you selected.
Here is the complete code listing:
public void activate(boolean _active) { str url; url = "http://dynamicsax.contoso.com/sites/DynamicsAx/_layouts/ReportServer/AdHocReportDesigner.aspx"; url = url + "?RelativeReportUrl=/sites/DynamicsAx/Power View Reports/CustomerSummaryDashboard.rdlx"; url = url + "&ViewMode=Presentation"; url = url + "&DefaultItemOpen=1"; url = url + "&Fit=True"; url = url + "&BackgroundColor=White"; url = url + "&AllowEditViewMode=False"; url = url + "&PreviewBar=False"; url = url + "&rf=[Company].[Company] eq '" + CustTable.dataAreaId + "'";
How it works...
Now when the dashboard is displayed, it will only show the
information that relates to the current record.
How cool is that!
Summary
This was just a quick example of how you could create a Power
View report and then embed it into the Microsoft Dynamics AX
forms.
This is not the only place that you could do this though. If you
wanted, you could create dashboards for:
» Inventory statistics and embed them within the products forms
» Vendor scorecards and include them in the vendor records to
help with negotiations
» Project status reports to help the project managers
» Employee performance
This is a simple change to make, so give it a go. AXUG

AXUG: Walk us through what your team has
developed for Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 R3.
Chandramouli Venkatesh (CV): The biggest
feature we added is Master Data Management,
which has been a long-standing ask from
Customers and the field. I’d say this is the single
biggest feature addition in R3 by my team.
We also worked on performance improvements,
including specific advancements and improvements
to X++ compiler, which has been a huge pain point
for ISVs and Partners in particular.
AXUG: You’ve been in program management
for quite a few years. What do you like best
about that role as it applies to the business
applications Microsoft develops?
CV: Business applications are a really motivating
and inspiring way to see how our solutions address
real business problems and have an impact on our
Customers’ bottom lines. It’s very gratifying to see
that play out.
As a program manager, the touchpoint we have
with Customers, Partners, ISVs, and AXUG is
eye-opening and educational. Every time I meet
a Customer or Partner, I walk away thinking that
they’re using the product in ways that we didn’t
even think about. It’s refreshing to get those insights
and put what we’ve learned back into the product to
make even more of an impact with future releases.
AXUG: Where do you get most of your product
feedback?
CV: The Connect tool is the most concrete way, but
we receive input from informal channels as well,
as we take the feedback from casual conversations
and feed that information back to the product
team…so much so that some Customers are
friends with me on Facebook!
AXUG: Now that’s a friendly relationship!
I imagine you also have a regular cadence
of receiving feedback from the Technology
Advancement Program (TAP)?
CV: Yes; we also have the Customer Advisory Council
that we meet with regularly to gather feedback and
bounce ideas off of, which ultimately leads to them
helping to shape the future of the product.
These meetings are frequent enough to enable
getting updates often, but not so often that we
annoy the Customers that are helping us.
Another thing with the advisory council is that
we include a bunch of different Customers, from
business size to industry to geography, to get a
diverse number of viewpoints.
AXUG: You previously mentioned that you’ve
engaged with Users during AXUG events. We
love to hear that. How has that involvement
helped connect you with Users?
CV: It’s a very structured way to hear the Customer’s
voice. It’s also a beneficial way for Users to get
information and voice opinions, rather than looking
on the web for random feedback where they could
walk away not finding the answer they need.
There’s also so much innovation in the User
world, and this User group model allows innovation
to flourish. The more creative the product usage,
the better.
AXUG: On that creativity note, Microsoft Dynamics
AX was previously known for customizations, but
the last couple of releases seem to have focused on
more out-of-the-box functionality. Can we expect
that with Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 R3 and
future releases as well?
CV: We see a continuing trend towards enabling
more standardization in the product. This is purely
a reaction to the market and industry moving
towards more and more ready-made solutions
where people don’t want to start from scratch.
It’s the right thing to do as technology evolves
and is in line with what we want the base product
to be, so we’re investing more in the product to
enhance that out-of-the-box functionality.
That said, we will not take away the power to
customize as that’s one of the biggest traits of Microsoft
Dynamics AX, but if there’s less need to customize,
then that’s a good thing. Less time implementing, less
time upgrading. That’s good news overall.
AXUG: Is there anything else you’d like to share
with our readers?
CV: Keep the feedback coming as we’re absolutely
listening. Sometimes Users might feel like they’re
not getting individual responses, but that’s due
purely to the volume we receive, so we’re not
always able to extend a personal response.
The Connect tool is the most official way
to provide feedback, but there is also AXUG
Collaborate, LinkedIn forums (which I check
often), and other avenues. Use all the avenues you
can, except maybe not Facebook. My aunts and
friends might not know what you’re talking about
if you start to ask questions about X++. AXUG

Display Pack is a packager that has a niche market in advertising. Chances are if you’ve
purchased a mobile phone or accessory in the last couple of years, you’ve held their
product before you’ve held your new phone.
Over the past 47 years, the family-owned company grew from a one-stall garage to a
five-story, 460,000-square-foot building plus two additional facilities, creating solutions
that have earned them numerous AmeriStar awards for packaging.
Display Pack implemented Microsoft Dynamics AX 2009 in January 2011 to help them bring their
spreadsheets and disparate data into a single system. In addition to Microsoft Dynamics AX, the company
leans on RF-SMART to control their shop floor from handheld devices, automating their manufacturing
environment and keeping their team on the warehouse floor to enter data instead of in their offices.
We caught up with Holly Coppock, IS manager, and Nate Briggs, logistics manager, of Display Pack to
learn more about how the technology and mobility have moved their business forward over the last couple
of years, as well as hearing their advice on how the combination can help other Users move forward as well.
A Team of Experts
Before the implementation of the handheld devices, Display Pack’s warehouse team learned how to use
Microsoft Dynamics AX, something that Holly and Nate say was instrumental to their success with both
Microsoft Dynamics AX and the handheld device’s interface. As Nate says, “We now have a team of experts
instead of a team of Users.”
“The data gathered from these systems has helped us understand our movements more clearly and put
the warehouse together in a practical sense. It’s also really helped with labor as well, as we’ve been able to
break down overtime due to poor process control,” continues Nate. “We’re getting tighter and tighter and
starting to see the gains.”
From a back office perspective, Holly’s team has experienced a seamless integration between the
handheld devices and Microsoft Dynamics AX.
“Nate’s really great to work with as he’s very specific with his needs,” says Holly. “As long as we have the
information in the system, we’re able to compile the reports and data he needs. We really don’t have to
spend a lot of time supporting him and the warehouse, which makes our jobs rather fun and easy.”
Nate is quick to compliment Holly and her team as well, sharing, “Holly does a fantastic job of putting it
together so I can actually use it,” shares Nate.

Always Moving
Tongue in cheek, Display Pack has the mantra of “God, family,
and ERP”. This mantra holds up as the team continues to look
towards the next big thing, whether that’s a search for new
hardware that will bring more control to the floor or re-evaluating
workflows to make sure they’re as efficient as possible.
“Display Pack was built on being progressive and always moving,
and we continue to push for ROI in everything we do,” says Nate.
“We’re interested in getting into tablets, but we own the scanners, and
it’s hard to justify replacing a $4,500 device when it’s still working.”
When the devices are retired, the team plans to replace them with
mobile devices.
“We’ve been looking at a motion tablet that can run Microsoft
Dynamics AX and RF-SMART,” continues Nate. “It’s a great tool, a
way of the future. Our receiving guy has taken ownership of it and has
really embraced the tool.”
“We’re also looking at setting up our workflows so that in two
years we can streamline our operations and remove clerical support,
meaning that POs would go up to accounting from the floor, and our
shipping paperwork would be completed electronically,” says Nate.
Have Faith
The Display Pack team finds it hard to envision life without the
implementation they have today.
“There is absolutely nothing we can’t do,” says Nate. “Sure, there
are things that cost money so we can’t just do them, but we can
do anything with the system to let our people do what they need
to do.”
That feeling is bittersweet as like many other companies, Display
Pack had to cut their workforce substantially in 2008, due to the
economic depression.
“We cut our staff in half back then, but we’re ramping back up
without having to add as much staff,” says Holly. “Now in better
times, we’re able to maintain our workloads without increasing the
workforce at the same rate.”
With an eye on the future, Nate shares advice that resonates across
industries and implementations.
“Have faith in your process. Understand it and be willing to listen
to your people and their feedback,” shares Nate. “Don’t be satisfied
with what’s coming out of the box. Challenge the norm and keep
pushing the envelope.” AXUG

A common tool for any accountant is Microsoft Excel®; it’s used
everywhere to complete a variety of tasks including budgets and
year-end financial forecasts. Such was the case at International Dairy
Queen, Inc. based in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
In the past, 12-month budgets were prepared in Excel by department
heads for each cost center for each company. Each company/cost
center combination was a separate Excel file. The Excel files were
submitted to the accounting team for review. After each proposed
budget was approved by accounting, all of the individual Excel files
were submitted to the information services team, who then uploaded
each spreadsheet into the budgeting software. Accounting would
run 12-month rollup and consolidation budget reports for upper
management review. As upper management changes were mandated,
the process was repeated until the final budget was arrived at.
The process for preparing monthly, year-end financial forecasts
was a more cumbersome process because year-end forecasts were
prepared for September, October, November, and December and
were prepared entirely using Excel. Beginning in mid-September,
each department head would prepare a year-end forecast for their
respective area(s) using Excel. Each forecast was submitted to
the accounting team who would then manually create rollup and
consolidated forecast reports using Excel. The entire process was
repeated for the months of October, November, and December.
Today, the process of preparing budgets and year-end forecasts
at IDQ is streamlined considerably using Microsoft Forecaster,
Microsoft FRx®, and Microsoft FRx Webport. The process is handled
completely by accounting without the assistance of information
services. Department heads and end Users key their budgets and
year-end forecasts directly into Microsoft Forecaster via Microsoft
Forecaster Web Access.
Through the use of input sets in Microsoft Forecaster, inputting
12-month budgets and year-end forecasts has the look and feel for
the end User as if they were inputting into Excel.
For budget input, first a Microsoft Forecaster administrator
defines budget accounting periods, including a year-to-date total
period. Next, line sets are created with all of the revenue and expense
accounts to be budgeted for. Column sets are created by combining
the 12 budget periods for the year and the year-to-date total period.
The administrator creates budget input sets by assigning the line set
and the budget column set to
the input set. Line set overrides
on the input set allow for some
cost centers, as defined by
IDQ, to see a shortened list of
accounts to budget for.
Rollup and consolidation
rollup structures are defined in
Microsoft Forecaster, allowing
for rollup and consolidated
12-month budget reports to
be generated in Microsoft
Forecaster at any time.
Microsoft Forecaster reports
are created by combining
the same line set and column set used in the input set. Currency
conversion rates are input into Microsoft Forecaster, allowing for top-
consolidation budget reports to be generated across multi-currency
companies. When running reports for a rollup cost center and/or a
consolidation company, Microsoft Forecaster allows the end User the
ability to drill down to the detail level to see what components make
up the consolidated numbers.
Streamlining Budgeting and Forecasting with Microsoft Forecaster and Microsoft FRxby Gary Novak
t t&TIPS & TRICKS
Through the use of input sets in Microsoft
Forecaster, inputting 12-month budgets and
year-end forecasts has the look and feel for the
end User as if they were inputting into Excel.
26 | AXUG Magazine
When the final budget is approved by upper management,
12-month budget reports, by cost center, are generated by accounting
using Microsoft FRx and the IDQ rollup reporting hierarchy defined
within Microsoft FRx. Rather than printing budget reports and
distributing these reports to the respective department heads,
budget reports are pushed out to the Microsoft FRx Webport where
department heads can view their budgets online.
Setting up Microsoft Forecaster for budget input is a fairly
straightforward process. However, setting up Microsoft Forecaster
for year-end forecasting takes more thought and effort.
At IDQ, Users are presented with a pre-populated forecast input
set. Users see actuals numbers for all closed periods and their budget
numbers for the remaining open periods in the calendar year to
formulate their year-end forecast. Actuals are locked down and are
not editable by the User. Users are able to adjust their budget/forecast
numbers to prepare their year-end forecast.
To accomplish this in Microsoft Forecaster, first current-year
actuals periods and forecast periods are defined. A forecast column
set is then created by assigning to it both the current-year actuals
periods and forecast periods. Next, a forecast input set is created by
assigning to it a line set with all of the revenue and expense accounts
and the forecast column set. Be sure to lock the actuals periods on
the input set. This is what prevents Users from editing the actuals.
Current-year actuals are imported into Microsoft Forecaster, and the
current-year budget is copied to the forecast input set, being sure the
budget is copied to the forecast periods.
On the column set, check the “hide” check box to hide actuals periods
that are still open where actuals numbers have not been imported. Also,
“hide” forecast periods where actuals exist. By hiding and unhiding
columns in the column set, you can always display 12 months at a time to
the User. A 12-month YTD forecast column can be added to the column
set by creating a year-to-date forecast total period using a formula to
sum up the appropriate actual periods and appropriate forecast periods.
As months close, you import actuals for the closed month, followed
by unhiding that month’s actual numbers and hiding that month’s
forecast numbers in the column set and adjusting the year-to-date
forecast total period. The previously entered forecast numbers for the
remaining open months remain in the system and are available to the
Users for updating as more information about the future becomes
available. There is no need for the User to start over to prepare each
month’s year-end forecast.
Rollup and consolidation reports can be generated in Microsoft
Forecaster using the same column set and line set. Appropriate actual
periods and forecast periods will display and total up to a year-to-date
total. Currency conversion rates are input into Microsoft Forecaster,
allowing for top-consolidation forecast reports to be generated across
multi-currency companies.
Forecast reports at IDQ are generated by accounting using
Microsoft FRx and the IDQ rollup reporting hierarchy defined within
Microsoft FRx. Microsoft Forecast reports are also pushed out to
the Microsoft FRx Webport where department heads can view their
year-end forecasts online.
Using Microsoft Forecaster, Microsoft FRx, and Microsoft FRx
Webport in combination have greatly streamlined the budget and
forecast processes at IDQ. AXUG

With TARGIT’s BI & Analytics for AXEveryone in your organization sees and shares the same goals and objectives. No more static reports, but dynamic analyses that keeps you up-to-speed. TARGIT is the world’s largest BI vendor for MS Dynamics AX.
www.targit.com
The wake of September 11, 2001, wasn’t
an ideal time to start a company,
but for six individuals who left
a large public organization and
wanted something small that valued
employee, Customer, and Partner satisfaction, it
was a perfect time.
“We figured that if we put an emphasis on those
principles and invested in employees as our greatest
asset, everything else would take care of itself,” says
Kevin Paul, vice president of Blue Horseshoe.
Blue Horseshoe chose to focus on supply
chain for the midmarket, an area of business that
generally continued with their investment strategies
and schedules even in tough economic times.
“We chose to develop solutions for Microsoft
Dynamics AX in 2005 because it lined up nicely
with the Customers and industries we were
selling to and the expertise we were building,”
says Kevin. “It also offered us an open system feel
with development, with huge white space around
warehousing and transportation, which met our
desire to focus on highly distributed markets.”
Fast forward 12 years, and Blue Horseshoe has
gone from six to 150 people, grown a consultative
management practice, and kept its employee
turnover to less than 10 percent. The company
has also expanded its footprint into the retail,
beverage, and consumer packaged goods industries
while continuing to hone its warehousing and
transportation solution.
“We felt that if we embedded that solution in
Microsoft Dynamics AX and built it in layers, we
could not only show the benefit and virtues of
what we wrote, but also do it in a manner that was
very cost justified,” says Kevin. “In doing so, Users
quickly adopted the solution with great fervor and
vigor because they saw the virtues of it.”
“The greatest barrier to midmarket
organizations purchasing Microsoft Dynamics AX
is getting them up and running quickly,” continues
Kevin. “We can call it an investment all day long,
but Users call it an expense and want to make sure
they’re getting a return and deploying quickly.”
Blue Horseshoe earned kudos and references
by taking 18- to 20-month deployments and
reducing them to six. The fruits of their labor
were fully realized when Microsoft extended
an OEM for its warehouse and transportation
solution in July 2013.
“This happened quickly and was perpetuated
because our Customers went to User group
activities and talked about their experiences,” says
Kevin. “Their stories of being up and running and
getting to work quickly are why Microsoft pursued
the acquisition.”
That User group collaboration – bringing
together intelligent, successful organizations to
create a productive environment – is at the heart
of when good things happen.
“It’s about making sure people can collaborate
and interact while also being in a position to
not only just hear the issues, but also promote
the excitement,” says Kevin. “Where you win is
where you’ve made an impact and taken care of
something that a Partner hasn’t been able to do
before or become much better at it so a User can
begin to explore other areas of their business.”
This environment sets the Microsoft Dynamics
AX and AXUG® communities apart from others.
“This is a younger, more progressive, and higher-
growth oriented community,” says Kevin. “The thing
that excites me the most is that it’s very collaborative,
with a VAR- and ISV-driven marketplace that
Microsoft is then able to introduce, absorb, and
apply in a mass market sort of way.”
“These are companies that can grow; they’re the
ones that I want to go and work with,” continues
Kevin. “They’re the ones that are investing and
see every dollar spent as something that will make
them better. Success begets success, and that’s
been our target.” AXUG

INBOUND TIPS TO TURBOCHARGE
Receiving
Receiving is the process of confirming that you received what
you ordered from the vendor or supplier. Does the product
received match the purchase order? The main receiving priority
is to validate that you have received the exact order and move
the incoming goods – whether they are on or in pallets, cartons,
totes, boxes, or something else – as quickly as possible from the
incoming trucks or cars to the storage, staging, or shipping areas in
your distribution center (DC). Every stop, every move, and every
use of a temporary staging area requires space and time. The more
you touch or handle product in any way, the more opportunity you
have for product damage, difficulty in locating stock, and errors.
By default you also have increased labor, inventory, and other costs.
When a typical DC receives, counts, and inspects thousands
of items from hundreds of vendors whose own pick/pack/
ship practices are all different, receiving can be one of the most
complicated DC processes. Any errors in this phase will have a
ripple effect that can impact all other areas in the DC. In addition
to the physical process impacts, data from receiving determines
when and how vendors are paid (directly impacting cash flow),
potential rework costs, and incorrect inventory exposure. Picking
and outbound process efficiencies start with receiving. Receiving
best practices means moving items to their next location with as
few touches – and as little labor – as possible.
Good receiving also starts with good labeling, both with vendor
labels and those used to map to internal inventory systems and
locations. Depending on the warehouse management system
(WMS) receiving module, typical pallet labels (generally applied
at the receiving station) would likely include:
» Shipper/supplier information (company name, vendor number)
» P.O. number, receipt date, lot codes, date codes
» Pallet and/or case level quantity
» Product (SKU) number and description
» Pallet, case, each unit level ID
» TI x HI information
» Track and traceability information
In many receiving operations, portable printers can enhance
pallet labeling productivity and accuracy by eliminating travel
and ensuring the right label is applied to the goods received in
real-time. An effective receiving system also includes a well-
labeled facility. All storage and staging areas such as aisles, slots,
rack bays, shelves, and put-to-store floor locations through to the
shipping dock doors are likely to be labeled with large, easy-to-
read (both human readable and barcoded) location labels. Voice
picking processes also typically use randomly assigned two-
digit human-readable location ID check-digit labels. And larger
barcode “license plate” labels scannable from 30 to 50 feet are
recommended to identify high bay inventory locations.
Multiple industry studies confirm that paperless data
acquisition processes based on scanning, voice, and/or RFID
are the most accurate and error-free methods of receiving and
subsequent handling of goods. To maximize productivity and
accuracy of the entire operation, top DCs always begin with the
labeling process at receiving. While it may sound simplistic,
the rewards of reduced receiving errors are very high. WERC
studies show that receiving is an area where benchmarking and
performance measurement are particularly important.
Flow Through
This is a process that occurs when typically full pallets are
identified by their ASNs (advanced shipping notices) and
taken from receiving directly to a “put” location rather than
being “put away” into the general inventory locations. A flow
through put location is provided by the WMS for a given
order. The put location can be at a shipping dock door or a
staging area for a specific customer order. If timed correctly
between receiving and shipping, a full pallet can be received,
reverse picked, and loaded directly into an outgoing truck with
reduced product handling. These pallets with high-velocity or
fast-moving goods are “broken”, and cases from the pallet are
put to a flow through location or into lines arranged in front
of dock doors where items are temporarily staged, then built
into new pallets for immediate shipping. The remaining cases
that do not flow through from the received pallet are put away
into regular inventory. Flow through requires an inventory
transaction.

(Note: This excerpt is from a whitepaper written by eNSYNC Solutions,
Inc. and Intermec/Honeywell Corporation. We’ll feature more ware-
house tips in a future issue of AXUG Magazine.)
Best Practices Tips and Techniques for Inbound Shipments by Area and Task
34 | AXUG Magazine
YOUR WAREHOUSE
Flow through is a great process for many DCs because less is
always more – less handling, fewer mistakes, less damage, etc.
Cross Docking
In its purest form, cross docking is the action of unloading
materials from an incoming trailer or container and
immediately loading these materials in outbound trailers,
thus eliminating the need for storage. Pure cross docking is
common in distribution centers, trucking depots and freight
consolidation points. Most cross docking applications in a DC
are closely aligned with flow through applications where the
operations require staging areas where inbound materials are
sorted, consolidated, and stored until the outbound shipment is
complete and ready to ship. True cross docking in a typical DC
environment requires extremely good management of receiving
and outbound timing and places a high degree of importance
on the WMS and shipping coordination to accomplish. Cross
docking does not involve an inventory transaction.
Put Away
Put away is the function of moving received goods from
receiving locations to inventory storage locations. In most
cases, the location for each item depends on its “velocity.”
High-velocity items (those that are fast movers rather than
slower movers) will be stored closer to the packing/loading
stations. However, there are many other process engineering
issues related to optimal put away location and can include
grouping similar items and locations into categories,
understanding dimensions, weight, unit of measure (eaches,
cases, pallets, etc.), temperature requirements, whether
it can be mixed with other items in a location, whether it
is rackable, max stack height, max quantity per location,
hazard classifications, finished goods or raw material, etc.
It is also important to consider the size of an item and
item velocity required for each pick. For the smaller size,
fast-moving products establishing a compact high-density
storage area ensure fast picks due to reduced travel time.
Most WMS applications enhance the put away process
by including downstream activities in the logic and decision
process. For example, put away decisions include which
location to pick from, replenish from/to, and in what
sequence these events should occur and whether the put
away is system directed or User directed.
Following are some additional requirements that can
impact put away logic:
» Location Sequence: This is the simplest logic; define a
flow through the DC and assign a sequence number to
each location. In order picking, this is used to sequence
picks to flow efficiently through the DC. The put away
logic would look for the first location in the sequence in
which the product would fit.
» Zone Logic: Breaking down storage locations into zones
can direct picking, put away, or replenishment to or from
specific areas of your DC. Since zone logic only designates
an area, combining this with cube and labor factors is
required to determine exact location within the zone.
» Fixed Location: Logic uses predetermined fixed
locations per item in picking, put away, and
replenishment. Fixed locations are most often used as
the primary picking location in piece pick and case-
pick operations; however, they can also be used for
secondary storage.
» Flex Location: Flexible locations generally refer to
areas where products are not stored in designated fixed
locations and may be temporarily stored. Like zone
logic, some additional logic is needed to determine
exact locations.
» First-in-first-out (FIFO): Directs picking from the
oldest inventory first.
» Last-in-first-out (LIFO): Opposite of FIFO. This might
seem strange, but an example might be an operation that
distributes perishable goods domestically and overseas.
LIFO is for overseas customers (because of longer in-
transit times), and FIFO is for domestic customers.
» Reserved Locations: This is used to predetermine
specific locations to put away to or pick from. An
application for reserved locations would be flow
through, put-to-store, and traditional cross-docking,
where an inbound shipment can be moved to specific
outbound staging locations or directly to an awaiting
outbound trailer. AXUG

Following is a recap of a four-part series that I think is useful to
almost anyone who wants to take advantage of some of the cool
features with Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 R2 and Power BI.
Without a doubt, for each of the topics covered, there is plenty
of room for extended reach and depth of knowledge. While there
might be some value for certain people in such a deep journey of
understanding for each of the topics, the point would be lost of what
the goal really is.
That goal, my friend, is the enablement of quick consumption of
data assets. This is the real goal of any business intelligence story that
is to be crafted for a company: Owning the data, and turning that
data into a real asset that goes to work for companies. With this goal
in mind then, the following links provide a recap, with the goal of
quickly getting you up and running with Power View and showing
you how any cube can be the target for such personal BI artifacts:
» Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 R2 and Power View - Part I:
http://dynamics-ax.blogspot.com/2013/03/ax-2012-r2-and-
powerview-part-i.html
» Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 R2 and Power View - Part II –

» The Cube Behind the Power View - Part I – Perspective: http://
dynamics-ax.blogspot.com/2013/04/the-cube-behind-power-
view-part-i.html
» The Cube Behind the Power View - Part II – Create, Deploy, and
Process: http://dynamics-ax.blogspot.com/2013/04/the-cube-
behind-power-view-part-ii.html
Now having each of these reviewed, you should see how simple it
really is to empower yourself and your company or clients to truly start
embracing the full BI semantic model. When Microsoft Dynamics
AX is your system of record and acting as your main data mart, then
you have a great BI offering built right into the product. This is what
we refer to as Tier 1 BI for Microsoft Dynamics AX Customers,
meaning that nothing but the stack of Office+SharePoint+SQL Server
(OSS) is used to craft a BI story for a company. It’s very feasible, and
it does not take a deep understanding of the empowering, underlying
technologies to get started.
The end result is less focus around what tool is used, and more
focus on the actual data. Too much focus at times is placed in the
ecosystem currently around specific tools and myths of “removing
IT” from the equation. The goal is putting your data to work for you,
and then the tool comes into focus for the specific BI artifacts that are
needed to get the job done. AXUG

TARGIT’s roots reach back to 1986
as a software company in Denmark.
Seeing a future in business analytics,
the company sold off much of the
business in 2000 to pursue that focus.
In 2012, TARGIT aptly targeted its business on
Microsoft Dynamics, providing Users with TARGIT
Decision Suite, a single integrated solution for
business intelligence (BI) and analytics, including
data discovery, dashboards, analytics, reports,
financial statements, alerts, and notifications, all
from one platform.
AXUG: What do Users like about TARGIT?
Ulrik Pedersen (UP): We receive very high
props in our Customer satisfaction surveys for
support and follow-through on projects. We have
an established department that works only with
existing Customers, so they know they’re taken
care of after the sale.
From a product perspective, they like that we offer
everything in one platform and that they don’t have
to go to different products for reports or analysis.
We also truly have unsurpassed User friendliness
in our product. Every product today claims to be
User friendly, but we’re actually so much so that you
can just say a command, and TARGIT will show you
an analysis. It’s kind of like “Back to the Future”, but
literally, you just ask for it, and the product will give it.
AXUG: Love that movie-like magic! What’s
coming out next for Users?
UP: We recently launched the mobile client for
Android, so we now cover iPhone and Android. In
mid-December, we released a service release that
includes a new reporting engine that caters to an
organization’s finance department. Furthermore,
we have included a big performance-tuning
feature in this release that enables Customers
using Microsoft cubes as their data warehouse to
turbo-boost those cubes using a mix of in-memory
and advanced caching technology.
This gets a little technical, but basically, they’ll
get whatever they ask for in an instant. The
challenge with cubes is that they perform quickly,
on aggregated levels, but if you go to a transactional
detail level with millions of rows right off the bat,
a cube will never perform, no matter which tool
you put on top of it. We finally cracked the code so
that the TARGIT client and server engine will use
advanced caching and a proprietary in-memory
data storage to supplement the cubes and deliver
a lightning fast experience to the Users. If you do
a side-by-side comparison with TARGIT and any
other tool using Microsoft cubes, we perform
faster because of this architecture.
AXUG: You mentioned support of the Android
and iPhone platforms. How does the mobile
client differ from TARGIT’s desktop client?
UP: We have three levels of clients – normal,
advanced, and developer – and the mobile
experience is very similar to “normal” access on the
Windows or web client. Not all the developer tools
are on the mobile client, so you can’t set up a new
dashboard or report, but you can use everything
else, including the slicing and dicing of analysis
and reports so you can answer those questions you
may have.
What’s really popular on the mobile client is that
you can receive push notifications on things that
are crucial for you to be up to date on, for example,
if your inventory is running low.
Mobility has been a hype word for a long time,
but it’s just now being implemented and adopted
by Users.
AXUG: When you’re talking with Users, what
type of questions come up most often with
regard to BI and analytics?
UP: Mobility is one for sure, but another is integration
of data – how do they get budgets in, reporting across
Microsoft Dynamics CRM and Microsoft Dynamics
AX, and so on. There’s also a lot of talk about big data.
I think if you ask 10 people to define big data today,
you’ll get 10 different definitions.
AXUG: How do you define big data?
UP: Big data is the enormous amount of data
outside your organization that you can’t control
and can’t necessarily access.
We have some tools that help Users sample on
big data, meaning they could query on how they
rank on search engines compared to 10 named
competitors with defined search terms, and then
the tool will go out and find the data that’s relevant.

AXUG® Academy strives to
be the premier learning
destination for all Microsoft
Dynamics AX professionals.
Here’s what some of your
fellow AXUG Members are saying about
the most recent AXUG Academy training
classes they took in Tampa, Florida, prior
to AXUG Summit 2013.
Understanding the
Microsoft Dynamics AX
2012 Data Model:
“Instructor did an excellent job and
showed a true mastery of the topic.”
“The instructor is great. He is an expert in
his field.”
Compliance for Techies:
Internal Control
Approaches for Code
Management:
“Joris is articulate and comes across as
very knowledgeable on the subject. He
provided some good insight on the process.”
Introduction to
Management Reporter:
“Noah did a good job of covering the
material and tailoring it to the needs of the
class. He asked each one of us to state our
level of Microsoft Dynamics AX knowledge,
which really helped define the pace of the
class. Derek acted as a troubleshooter to
keep students on track and to deal with
specific issues. Very good system! I learned
a lot.”
We are very excited to continue to
bring you incredibly rich content in 2014,
content that is generated by listening to
you, our AXUG Members. If you have
recommendations or feedback as we plan
for the 2014 AXUG Academy lineup, please
contact us at [email protected]. AXUG

This quarter we asked a few AXUG® Members about how their supply chain needs have changed in the past 12 to 24 months. Here are their answers.

1 | Joe Villella business analysis [email protected] Industries, LLC800 Users
We’re growing globally and need to extend the
reach of our lean supply chain to accommodate that
expansion. We’re also working to increase visibility to
potential (quoted) demand and incorporate that data
into procurement decisions while maintaining a lean
philosophy.
2 | Jay Omdahlvice president - [email protected]+ Users
We moved to mobile and also increased the use of drop
ship vendors for highly specialized product fulfillment.
3 | Terry ForsheeIT manager – applicationsCMC [email protected] Users
The biggest change for us has been how we
communicate with our suppliers. Over the years, we
have exchanged purchase orders and invoices through
the postal service. We had to plan and allow for days
or weeks to pass in order to fulfill an internal need. We
recently stopped sending and receiving faxes, which has
saved us time in our fulfilment, and for the past year, we
have primarily exchanged purchase orders and invoices
as email attachments. In the future, we hope to shorten
this time even further by utilizing EDI ordering straight
out of Microsoft Dynamics AX.
Another major change for us has been product
selection and pricing. Not too long ago, many
suppliers would send us their product catalog. As
suppliers have adapted to the Internet, the number
of catalogs we receive each year diminishes. Today,
most of our investigation and product analysis are
done online.
4 | Michael G. Ulicnematerials [email protected] Corporation85 Users
Our supply base doesn’t carry as much inventory as
they did prior to the recession, and we have to issue more
blanket purchase orders and do a better job forecasting
than in the past. We are also getting shorter lead times
from our customers, causing us to be designing special
options within suppliers lead times, making expedition a
necessity. AXUG
