Security in Microsoft Dynamics AXby Andrea Jordan

Note: � is tip applies to versions before Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012.

If you fi nd yourself building many roles (like I did last year), create a template role to import and build from that.

It has full control on the base nodes with the security removed from underneath, on the main nodes, on the Misc. nodes, and on the table nodes. I did this for accounts payable,

accounts receivable, general ledger, and project, as these are the functions we most frequently use in my company. Import the template role, build the permission sets required, and once the role has been tested and access is confi rmed, remove any straggler nodes that were

not used (identifi ed via a re-test). � is template has saved me hours. � e top nodes need full control for some temporary tables

and methods to build and run, whereas under them usually is restricted for most of my Users or specifi c security needs. For this example I’m showing my general ledger template, though the accounts payable, accounts receivable, and project template roles are set up in the same manner.

� is isn’t always an easy concept to grasp, but it truly did save me so much time while re-building all of our roles.

visiting friends at a hotel lobby restaurant. Fortunately for me and everyone involved, my presence in the men’s bathroom caused little alarm, except for my embarrassment. Afterward, I wondered about how it happened. I have walked into the

wrong bathroom only one other time in my life. In both instances, the placement of the men’s bathrooms in relation to the women’s bathrooms weren’t what I was expecting. Now that I’ve spent a while thinking about it, I realize that I expect women’s bathrooms to be on the right and men’s

bathrooms to be on the left. Both the men’s bathrooms I mistakenly walked into were on the wrong side, at least from my perspective. I’m quite sure I haven’t been the only person to fi nd themselves in the wrong place in these two inconsistently designed buildings.

I tell you this to illustrate that consistency is important in every aspect of our lives. It keeps traffi c patterns fl owing as smoothly as possible. It keeps thousands of people moving steadily through even the longest of airport security lines. It even helps us endure sometimes uncomfortable family situations because — even though

we get irritated by Aunt Edna’s constant criticisms — we are prepared for them.

Consistency is as essential for leaders as it is for busy waitresses or pet owners training puppies.

Many of us have experienced the fallout caused by erratic, unpredictable leaders. Remember the times you turned in what you thought was a good report only to discover your manager had changed the rules on the fl y, and you had to suff er through a dressing-down and a complete redo? Or, how about the times you led projects to near comple-tion only to have an unpredictable leader surprise you with a last-minute review that brought you and your team back to square one with only a few days to respond?

Whether it’s in mood, expectations, involvement, promptness, policies, or lines of questioning, being a consistent leader is critical to the success of your organization…and to the mental health of your team members.

Since I have yet to achieve consistency in any aspect of my life (except, I guess, for my consistent avoidance of morning work-outs), I’ll describe an inspirational leader to you — a leader I look forward to being around and learning from. I’ll call him “D.”

When D enters a room, he doesn’t fi ll the space with his ego. In fact, he’s typically a few minutes early, peacefully waiting for others to join. D listens attentively and doesn’t distract himself or others with e-mail or side conversations. D asks relevant, thoughtful questions that help others form strong conclusions and strategies. D off ers his opinions instead of imposing them on the group. D displays grace under pressure, even in the most stressful of situations. D searches for solutions instead of someone to blame. When D is involved, meetings and projects stay out of the ditches and remain focused on customers. In short, D is a consistent, quiet hero who I surreptitiously try to sit near in hopes his state of being will rub off on me by osmosis.

In case you’re thinking D is an amalgam I made up to illustrate a point, let me assure you he is real. I’ve had the honor of working with him for 25 years and have never once seen him being anything other than calm, open, helpful, optimistic, and most of all, consistent. And, if you’re like me and doubt it’s even remotely possible to be like D for more than an hour at a time, here’s the advice he gave me and other new managers long ago.

» � ink hard about how you want to be

treated, and conversely, how you don’t want to be treated. Do more of the former than the latter until treating others the way you want to be treated becomes a habit.

» Nobody likes to be caught off guard. It leads to embarrassment, defensiveness, and avoid-ance. Even if you’re introducing just a small change, allow time and space for people to understand, prepare, and respond.

» Leadership isn’t a thing; it’s a state of being. Twenty years from now, no one will remember the projects you led or the decisions you drove. � ey’ll remember who and how you are, and how you treat others.

Well, D, it’s been more than 20 years, and you are absolutely right. I don’t remember the projects we worked on together or even what my role was when you were my manager. But I’ll always remember and be inspired by who and how you are. AXUG

2012 is off to a great start in the world of Microsoft

Dynamics AX 2012. How appropriate is that, as Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 continues to be the talk of the AXUG and ERP communities! There are continued exciting announcements and opportunities in our community this year. Hopefully you and your company are taking advantage of these opportunities. AXUG is excited to

help provide these opportunities and spread the good news about Microsoft Dynamics AX throughout our community and beyond.

The virtual launch of Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 for Retail in February was an exciting announcement for both Microsoft and the Microsoft Dynamics AX community. The AXUG Retail Special Interest Group (SIG) has been active for years, but now in 2012, the group will be moving to the next level of SIG programs, with webinars, chapter meetings, and conference content focused on Microsoft Dynamics AX for Retail and providing opportunities for Members to listen, learn, and share their experiences around running Microsoft Dynamics AX in a retail environment. If your company is in the retail industry, or you are just starting down the path of implementing Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 for Retail, get involved in this SIG; you won’t be disappointed!

If you are reading this article while attending Convergence, hopefully you have had the opportunity to participate in some of our AXUG activities. The AXPAC PreGAME event for Partners and the AXUG DayONE event for the entire Microsoft Dynamics AX community are always good ways to start off Convergence week. Many AXUG Members are helping lead Interactive Discussions and Birds of a Feather sessions at Convergence. These sessions are

a great chance to listen, learn, and share experiences with Microsoft Dynamics AX; don’t miss them. But if you do, don’t worry. Many of these sessions will be re-run as AXUG webinars. The Convergence Encore webinar series is always a popular one, and based on the Convergence 2012 session topics, this year will be no exception. Attend one of these Encore webinars, and you can listen to the same great speakers and facilitators share their knowledge and experiences, just as they did in Houston.

Finally, as I look at all the other group AXUG activities planned for 2012, I want to challenge you and your company to maximize the value of your AXUG membership. Between the 20 SIGs, 30 regional chapters and global AXUG branches, 100-plus webinars, and 40 AXUG Academy courses planned, there are literally hundreds of opportunities to engage with other Microsoft Dynamics AX Users in the community. Make sure you do so! And don’t forget about AXUG Summit 2012, a great opportunity to network and share experiences with hundreds of fellow Members of the Microsoft Dynamics AX community! This year AXUG Summit returns to Seattle, where it all began with the first AXUG Summit in 2005. Make sure your plans to maximize your AXUG membership include a trip to Seattle in October for AXUG Summit.

2012 is shaping up to be a great year in the Microsoft Dynamics AX community. Get involved, and maximize the benefits and programs your AXUG membership provides. I promise that you and your company will not be disappointed!

As we look ahead to an exciting new year, I can’t help but reflect on 2011

and marvel at the fantastic year that our CRMUG® community has experienced. It’s hard to count our many blessings, but I’ll share with you a few of my favorites.

First, we have been blessed with a fabu-lous group of volunteers that have helped plan, coordinate, and execute around 190 educational webinars. Many of these

webinars have been led by the Microsoft Dynamics CRM most valu-able professionals (MVPs), and I can’t thank them enough for sharing their knowledge. I’d also like to extend a huge “thanks” to all of the expert Microsoft Dynamics CRM Users that took leadership roles within – and lent their expertise to – the CRMUG Special Interest Groups (SIGs).

We’ve also been blessed with an awesome array of CRMUG Regional Chapter leaders that have committed to building the CRMUG community within their local markets. It was a monumental initia-tive and achievement in 2011 to launch quarterly chapter meetings in 27 locations, and 52 Users stepped up to take leadership roles. Thank you to each of these leaders who openly share their Microsoft Dynamics CRM experiences and help facilitate meaningful dialogue between Users in our various regions.

I can’t say enough about the fantastic group of CRMUG Mem-bers who put enormous effort into making our CRMUG DayONE and Summit conferences wildly successful. The strength of our event programming continues to grow, and that has led to increased event attendance and more valuable networking opportunities. We experi-enced a record-breaking Summit attendance growth of 59 percent in 2011; hats off to all of you!

The CRMUG community is also blessed with a wealth of expert VAR and ISV Partner Members who openly share their expertise with the CRMUG community. Their knowledge and experiences are invaluable, and CRMUG and the Microsoft Dynamics CRM commu-nity as a whole grow stronger because of their contributions.

And lastly, I’d like to thank the CRMUG board of advisors for the investment they make in helping guide CRMUG, for the time they spent helping me navigate my first year as CRMUG director, and for their never-ending evangelism of CRMUG.

Looking ahead, I am excited for what 2012 has in store for CRMUG. You’ve no doubt joined CRMUG as a means of connect-ing with other Microsoft Dynamics CRM Users, and I am commit-ted to facilitating new and effective ways to help you accomplish just that. My CRMUG New Year’s resolutions are:

» To better understand your issues, allowing me to develop pro-gramming that best meets your needs.

» To provide a larger variety of programming for ALL roles within your organization.

» To improve the daily service we offer to you by responding quickly and accurately to all your requests.

AXUG Summit 2012 Planning Committee

The AXUG Summit is the highlight of the AXUG program year. Each year Summit continues to grow, with great leadership

from the Summit planning committee. Building on the success of the AXUG Summit 2011 in Las Vegas, the committee is working hard to plan a great event for this fall in Seattle, and we have room for a few more Members on our planning committee. The time

commitment is about two hours a month, and the reward is great. Don’t miss out on being a part of the largest conference in the world dedicated solely to the Microsoft Dynamics AX community. New AXUG SIGs Launch

Special Interest Groups (SIGs) are an exciting part of our AXUG programs. They represent a subset of AXUG Members who

meet around a common theme, such as industry, job role, function, or implementation phase. There are two new SIGs that have officially launched in 2012. The first is the Human Resources and Payroll SIG. If you and your company utilize this functionality in Microsoft Dynamics AX, attend this SIG to listen, learn, and share experiences around HRP and Microsoft Dynamics AX. The second is the Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 Upgrade SIG. This SIG

is sure to be a popular one, as it includes Members who meet to learn about the upgrade process to move to Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012, both on the functional and technical side. Past upgrade SIGs have provided AXUG Members helpful advice with moving from one version of Microsoft Dynamics AX to the next, and this SIG will be no different. Check out the events calendar at AXUG.com to see when these SIGs meet next. If there are specific topics you want to see either of these SIGs address, please send a note to [email protected].

Missed AXUG Activities at Convergence? No Worries!

Each year at Convergence, AXUG has a huge presence. From the Expo Hall to leading Interactive Discussions, AXUG Members

are active at Convergence. Unfortunately, not all AXUG Members can attend Convergence, so for those Members who still want to be involved in the great session content from Convergence, we created the AXUG Convergence Encore webinar series.

The same AXUG speakers and facilitators that led sessions at Convergence and AXUG DayONE will re-run their sessions as part of the Encore webinar series. Like other AXUG webinars, these

sessions will be conducted virtually and will provide attendees the chance to participate in sessions as if they were sitting in the audience in Houston. From the speakers to the PowerPoint decks, the content will be the same, with the added bonus that some discussions from Houston will be added directly into the dialogue during these Encore sessions. Don’t miss the chance to experience these great sessions. Encore webinars will take place in March, April, and beyond, so be sure to check the weekly newsletter or the event calendar at AXUG.com for the latest schedule.

Daric Schweikart is vice president and chief information officer of Flow International, a company that harnesses the true power of water. “We are the world leader in

the development and manufacturing of ultrahigh-pressure waterjet technology,” he says. “Our technology is used in many industries, and it can be used to cut anything from baby carrots to 22-inch titanium. You can find our technology used to cut glass, marble, all kinds of metals, and food products. It’s also used in surface preparation areas.”

To keep it all running smoothly and on schedule, Flow International relies on Microsoft Dynamics AX. Initially, the product was chosen from among many contenders to replace the company’s former ERP system, which Schweikart says was more than a decade old. After conducting a cost analysis that factored in maintenance and customization, the company chose Microsoft Dynamics AX.

“AX runs our entire business,” says Schweikart. “It’s not simply a point solution; we use it for financials, purchasing, time keeping, shop floor control, and logistics. We’ve implemented a single solution worldwide, and the result is that we have all the information in a single place. Whether it’s purchasing, reporting, or analytics, our worldwide solution provides a single source of the truth.”

That’s a big change, Schweikart says, from the days of having different systems supporting different geographic areas and functions. One of the ways the company is taking full advantage of its new technology environment is by participating in the Pacific Northwest chapter of AXUG, which meets quarterly and includes people from

companies in both Oregon and Washington. The half-day meetings usually include a good mix of end Users as well as Microsoft representatives and vendors. The meetings include different presentations and lunch.

Schweikart, who co-chairs the group, became familiar with it during the initial analysis that led to the selection of Microsoft Dynamics AX. “There was a local company using the product, 10 miles down the road, and Bill Blyth, their CIO was the head of the local User group,” he says. “So we attended the User group and connected with local Users to see firsthand how it was used in manufacturing. We also spent time at some of the local companies understanding if AX was the correct solution for us.”

The networking opportunities, Schweikart says, are the greatest benefit of participating in the group. “It’s the concept of birds of a feather,” he says. “The meetings are great conversation starters. They’re the perfect place to kick-start a conversation by sharing how you solved a problem, which usually sparks an idea with someone else. It’s about encouraging synergies of ideas and exchanging insights.”

One of the changes Schweikart hopes to see during his tenure as co-chair is a transition toward more open problem sharing. “People tend to consume more than they contribute,” he says. “I think some of that is due to the fact that a lot of people only want to share something if it’s perfect. But it’s not about showing off. It’s about introducing a subject and then getting feedback and input that leads to you getting something better out of it.” AXUG

Security in Microsoft Dynamics AXby Andrea Jordan

Note: This tip applies to versions before Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012.

If you find yourself building many roles (like I did last year), create a template role to import and build from that.

It has full control on the base nodes with the security removed from underneath, on the main nodes, on the Misc. nodes, and on the table nodes. I did this for accounts payable,

accounts receivable, general ledger, and project, as these are the functions we most frequently use in my company. Import the template role, build the permission sets required, and once the role has been tested and access is confirmed, remove any straggler nodes that were

not used (identified via a re-test). This template has saved me hours. The top nodes need full control for some temporary tables

and methods to build and run, whereas under them usually is restricted for most of my Users or specific security needs. For this example I’m showing my general ledger template, though the accounts payable, accounts receivable, and project template roles are set up in the same manner.

This isn’t always an easy concept to grasp, but it truly did save me so much time while re-building all of our roles.

It’s a busy time for the Microsoft Dynamics Retail team as they’ve just wrapped a global launch to bring the latest version of the solution to more than 30 countries. AXUG® sat down with Michael Griffiths, global director retail and distribution, to learn more about the product’s virtual launch, highlights from

the NRF show in January, and the team’s plans for the rest of 2012.

AXUG: You just wrapped two very successful events. Tell me more about the scope of your virtual launch in early February. Michael Griffiths (MG): We certainly did. We launched Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 for Retail with a virtual event on February 1.More than 3,000 attendees joined us for the event, which included a keynote encompassing a number of live Customer interviews along with insight from industry-leading analyst Kimberly Greenberger of Morgan Stanley. We showcased the new innovation we’ve added to this release in multi-channel management, social commerce, merchandising, POS, and more, plus we showcased live product demonstrations of key scenarios.

AXUG: And this event came right on the heels of the National Retail Federation (NRF) show in January. What was the most beneficial aspect of that event for your team?MG: The timing between our launch and NRF couldn’t have been better. More than 25,000 people attended the tradeshow, making this year’s event NRF’s largest in its 101-year history. This was also the largest presence we’ve had at the tradeshow. One of the things that attracted so much attention were the Customer stories we shared, including that of DavidsTea, Mattress Firm, and Simon Pearce, through press, videos, and presentations.

The most beneficial aspect of the show was the energy and interest from Customers, press, and analysts who wanted to know more about Microsoft Dynamics and our new “One Microsoft” message that evangelizes the connected, empowered, and proactive experience our Customers can expect.

The event and launch definitely exceeded our expectations and

would not have happened without the amazing efforts of many team members across Microsoft.

AXUG: If a Customer or Partner wasn’t able to attend the virtual event, are they still able to access the event’s content? MG: Yes, all the content has been archived, and anybody can watch the Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 for Retail virtual launch by visiting www.microsoft.com/dynamics/ax2012launch.

AXUG: What’s the biggest change Users will see between this retail offering and past releases?MG: Each release of our solution offers more value and capabilities to our Customers. This release, however, offers a tremendous amount of timely and relevant capabilities to meet the expectations of today’s empowered consumer and a fast-moving retail landscape. Unique capabilities not found anywhere else include fully-integrated multi-channel management and social commerce, complete Customer order workflow initiated at the POS, and advanced merchandising. They all take our solution to a new level. We are seeing such strong growth and adoption in the market based on this innovation, on the solution’s industry-leading global availability, and because Customers are looking for a solution that will take them into the future to win.

AXUG: What do you have in store for the rest of 2012?MG: We are “all in” when it comes to retail, and the next release plans are already underway. There is more innovation coming to build on our leadership in omni-channel, store management, and the overall Customer experience.

We also continue to drive our “One Microsoft” solution with significant leverage and value coming from solutions like Windows 7, Windows Embedded POSReady (Point of Sale), SQL Server, System Center, and Windows Server.

The future couldn’t be brighter when it comes to Microsoft and retail, and we look forward to the next waves of innovation that will help define the scenarios of tomorrow. AXUG

Sunrise Technologies was founded as a supply chain consulting firm for manufacturers and distributors in the textiles and apparel industry. In 2003 the business consulting practice decided

to become a Microsoft Dynamics AX Partner. The decision was a fruitful one, and the organization has grown tremendously since that time, and now focuses solely on implementations of Microsoft Dynamics AX.

AXUG: You’ve found success in the textiles and apparel industry. How did you choose your vertical focus?Heather Essic (HE): Our founder and president, Mr. John Pence, was the CIO of a major apparel manufacturing company prior to starting Sunrise Technologies. He recruited several other industry experts to work with him at Sunrise, which made it a logical decision to focus on apparel and textiles. When we became a Microsoft Dynamics AX Partner, it was a natural extension based on the expertise of our team. From there, we have expanded our practice to also include related industries such as consumer packaged goods, furniture, and more general manufacturing and distribution. AXUG: What are the benefits of working with a Partner who truly knows an industry? HE: We’ve seen a variety of things in the industry, both what works and what doesn’t, which can save a Customer time and money when they’re looking at new ideas. We understand the industry’s challenges and how to accommodate those within a software package.

Another advantage is that we’ve extended Microsoft Dynamics AX for the textile, apparel, and footwear industries by creating a template that makes life even easier for people in those industries. We also offer a template for the consumer packaged goods industry through our Sunrise Advanced Warehouse Management Solution for Microsoft Dynamics AX.

AXUG: Is that a boxed product or customized to each Customer’s needs?HE: Our templates are written in the same source code as Microsoft Dynamics AX. The templates are code that extends native Microsoft Dynamics AX functionality to the industry, and can be further customized for a Customer’s unique needs.

AXUG: Tell me a little bit about your Customers. HE: Our goal is to have Customers for life. We don’t implement the product for them and then

disappear. We want to be supportive after the Customer goes live with the product so they want to keep working with us.

That “Customer for life” principle can be seen through our involvement in Customer-focused organizations like AXUG as we’re able to help our Customers get involved in the Microsoft Dynamics AX community. About 70 percent of our Customers are part of AXUG, and they see a lot of value in the programming and networking opportunities. In addition to AXUG events, we take the opportunity twice a year to have special events for our Customers so we can network with them and they can network with each other.

AXUG: Seventy percent participation is a really good number – and we’re grateful for that! How do you get such good AXUG participation?HE: We share the experiences our Customers have had with AXUG with new Users. They’re honest about what has been valuable to them, and that helps new Users grow comfortable with AXUG and be able to experience the value themselves.

AXUG: We’re glad to have you as a Partner Member of AXUG. What do you enjoy most about your participation? HE: We see tremendous value in being able to network with our Customers on a regular basis through AXUG events. It’s an excellent way to meet face-to-face at Regional Chapter meetings, Summit, and Convergence and check in to see how things are going for our Customers.

AXUG: Speaking of Convergence, will Sunrise and your Customers be there this year? HE: Yes. It’s an exciting event for us to see Customers and prospects, as well as network with Microsoft. We’ll have a booth in the expo hall (number 333), which is not only a great place to talk with new people, but also is a “home base” for our Customers to relax and work.

In addition to the booth, we will have a Customer appreciation event for all our clients and Microsoft contacts. It’s always a great experience and we really enjoy the opportunity to have everybody together in one room. AXUG

AXUG: Tell me about your company’s background.Bill Harrison (BH): We’re a supply chain management software company with a rich heritage of innovation in the small and midsized (SMB) market. We’ve been in business for more than 25 years and were the first company to offer a standalone application for sales and operations planning 18 years ago. Although we’ve traditionally been focused on the SMB market, our DSX product extends our reach to global enterprises. We’re CfMD for Microsoft Dynamics AX and Microsoft Dynamics NAV, and as an Azure platform Partner we can offer a SaaS version of our product as well. We have grown quite well over the years, adding more and more resellers across the world. We now have 47 offices globally, and our product is sold and installed in 76 countries.

AXUG: Share a little about what Demand Management does for its Customers.BH: Our Demand Planning suite has applications that work on just about every business level. On the operational level, the Forecast Management product looks at your current demand and actual sales history, and applies the best fit of our 26 algo-rithms to achieve the most probable forecast. Our Requirements Planning application time phases the forecast at the tactical level, determining when you need to place orders based on consumption; Sales and Operation Planning enables our Customers to have a view of their business at a strategic level, looking at months and years in the future. Finally, our Advanced Planning and Scheduling application helps manufacturers schedule their manufacturing lines at the plant level.

We have also developed Collaboration, which allows designated employees access to specified portions of the forecast so they can add market intelligence and improve accuracy. For example, you can send the forecast to a sales or marketing person to get the intelligence they have as well as share it with Customers and suppliers, who can share changes in their business.

AXUG: What do you have coming up for Customers?BH: That’s where work gets fun. Several years ago we undertook the challenge to rewrite our legacy products, and they’re now on the latest and greatest Microsoft platforms. We’re now able to go to market with our legacy version and DSX, which allows us a whole new world of innovation.

Our DS Workflow allows companies to set up processes for the way they move information in their business and receive real-time notifications so people can prioritize tasks and set up work queues.

Another advancement is predictive lead time which tracks orders to receipts by month of the year so Customers are able to make product orders in advance of the time they’ll need the item for fulfillment.

AXUG: What makes Demand Management different from its competitors?BH: Our solutions are scalable so they can be used by growing companies and large enterprises alike, and growing companies can stay on the platform as they grow without a need for costly and time-consuming migration. When it comes to the SMB market, we have a greater depth for the vertical market than what you’d see in a much larger company. A large company can’t come down and compete here as the cost structure is different.

We also support nine languages, and we’ve trademarked “global solutions delivered locally” because of the extent of our office locations. There’s really nobody else in this space, and while we don’t boast that we’re the only choice, from a pure supply chain perspective, it’s us.

AXUG: We’re glad to have you as part of AXUG. What’s been the most beneficial aspect of your membership? BH: We joined AXUG this last year and have had a relationship with Microsoft for four years. Up until Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 came out, AX wasn’t a big portion of business in the United States. We sponsored the launch in August and also made the decision to join AXUG as it’s time for this product; it fills a niche similar to how we fill one.

Attending AXUG events and meeting Users has been beneficial to us. The Users are great, and we’re working with several across the spectrum.

AXUG: What do you like most about the Microsoft Dynamics AX community?BH: Customers know Microsoft is always going to be there for them. Microsoft cares about their business dramatically, and every release is going to get better and better and better, and companies that work with Microsoft recognize that. AXUG

I recently walked into the men’s bathroom by mistake while visiting friends at a hotel lobby restaurant. Fortunately for me and everyone involved, my presence in the men’s bathroom caused little alarm, except for my embarrassment. Afterward, I wondered about how it happened. I have walked into the

wrong bathroom only one other time in my life. In both instances, the placement of the men’s bathrooms in relation to the women’s bathrooms weren’t what I was expecting. Now that I’ve spent a while thinking about it, I realize that I expect women’s bathrooms to be on the right and men’s

bathrooms to be on the left. Both the men’s bathrooms I mistakenly walked into were on the wrong side, at least from my perspective. I’m quite sure I haven’t been the only person to find themselves in the wrong place in these two inconsistently designed buildings.

I tell you this to illustrate that consistency is important in every aspect of our lives. It keeps traffic patterns flowing as smoothly as possible. It keeps thousands of people moving steadily through even the longest of airport security lines. It even helps us endure sometimes uncomfortable family situations because — even though

we get irritated by Aunt Edna’s constant criticisms — we are prepared for them.

Consistency is as essential for leaders as it is for busy waitresses or pet owners training puppies.

Many of us have experienced the fallout caused by erratic, unpredictable leaders. Remember the times you turned in what you thought was a good report only to discover your manager had changed the rules on the fly, and you had to suffer through a dressing-down and a complete redo? Or, how about the times you led projects to near comple-tion only to have an unpredictable leader surprise you with a last-minute review that brought you and your team back to square one with only a few days to respond?

Whether it’s in mood, expectations, involvement, promptness, policies, or lines of questioning, being a consistent leader is critical to the success of your organization…and to the mental health of your team members.

Since I have yet to achieve consistency in any aspect of my life (except, I guess, for my consistent avoidance of morning work-outs), I’ll describe an inspirational leader to you — a leader I look forward to being around and learning from. I’ll call him “D.”

When D enters a room, he doesn’t fill the space with his ego. In fact, he’s typically a few minutes early, peacefully waiting for others to join. D listens attentively and doesn’t distract himself or others with e-mail or side conversations. D asks relevant, thoughtful questions that help others form strong conclusions and strategies. D offers his opinions instead of imposing them on the group. D displays grace under pressure, even in the most stressful of situations. D searches for solutions instead of someone to blame. When D is involved, meetings and projects stay out of the ditches and remain focused on customers. In short, D is a consistent, quiet hero who I surreptitiously try to sit near in hopes his state of being will rub off on me by osmosis.

In case you’re thinking D is an amalgam I made up to illustrate a point, let me assure you he is real. I’ve had the honor of working with him for 25 years and have never once seen him being anything other than calm, open, helpful, optimistic, and most of all, consistent. And, if you’re like me and doubt it’s even remotely possible to be like D for more than an hour at a time, here’s the advice he gave me and other new managers long ago.

» Think hard about how you want to be

treated, and conversely, how you don’t want to be treated. Do more of the former than the latter until treating others the way you want to be treated becomes a habit.

» Nobody likes to be caught off guard. It leads to embarrassment, defensiveness, and avoid-ance. Even if you’re introducing just a small change, allow time and space for people to understand, prepare, and respond.

» Leadership isn’t a thing; it’s a state of being. Twenty years from now, no one will remember the projects you led or the decisions you drove. They’ll remember who and how you are, and how you treat others.

Well, D, it’s been more than 20 years, and you are absolutely right. I don’t remember the projects we worked on together or even what my role was when you were my manager. But I’ll always remember and be inspired by who and how you are. AXUG
