Meet Laura HellingSCC’s 2014 Distinguished

Alumni Award Recipient

As the director of development for Wings of Hope,

an international non-profit organization, Laura

travels the globe, supporting humanitarian

efforts that lift people out of poverty. In fact,

over the past year she’s been to more than 100

villages in a half dozen countries.

When Laura attended St. Charles Community College almost 20 years ago, she had no idea

this is where her career would take her. What she did know was that she just needed a start.

And, being a mother of five, SCC was the perfect choice for her as it was close by and offered a

flexible schedule.

Laura described her teachers as phenomenal. She said she enjoyed the academic environment

and gained a set of skills at SCC that prepared her for success. So much so, that after earning an

Associate of Arts degree, she earned a bachelor’s degree from Lindenwood University and then

a master’s degree from Washington University.

Along the way, she served as the executive director of the Foundry Art Centre and was cultural

arts supervisor for the City of St. Peters Cultural Arts Center, helping the organization to grow

and coordinating grassroots efforts to establish local interest in the arts.

Beyond her work, she contributes to the community. She served on the Arts and Culture

Commission with the City of St. Charles. She is a founding board member of Riverside

Shakespeare Theatre Co., a board member for the Festival of the Little Hills, a member of

the Association for Fundraising Professionals and is a member of Lambert Airport’s Art

Advisory Committee.

Major Gifts and Grants Enhance STEM Programs

SunEdison officials presented $100,000 to be used for student scholarships and academic enhancements to

SCC’s Pre-Engineering Program on July 19, 2013. It is the largest gift the program has received, is the largest

gift to be donated through the SCC Foundation and is the first gift resulting in the naming of a space on

campus. A plaque in SunEdison’s honor was added outside the physics and engineering lab located in SCC’s

Administration Building.

“SunEdison is keen to encourage education in science, engineering and technology and we are proud to support

St. Charles Community College’s efforts in this area,” said Graham R. Fisher, Ph.D., chief scientist at SunEdison.

More than 100 SCC alumni currently are enrolled at various accredited universities, regionally and nationally,

including Ivy League universities. SCC alumni also are working as professionals in the engineering field for a

number of companies, NASA and Boeing to name a couple.

“We are thankful for SunEdison’s generous gift, especially now, as SCC’s Pre-Engineering Program has

expanded in recent years,” said Kasey McKee, SCC vice president for college advancement and planning. “The

support of local companies helps SCC to keep tuition affordable so area students can pursue an education for

careers that are in-demand.”

Special thanks goes to Dave Niermann, associate professor of pre-engineering/computer-aided drafting

and coordinator of SCC’s Pre-Engineering Program since 2004. His efforts and dedication strengthened the

program to be worthy of this investment, allowing many more students to have access to a high quality,

yet affordable option to earn two years of transfer credit toward a bachelor’s degree in various engineering

disciplines at four-year institutions.

Businesses, Organizations and Individuals Contribute an Additional $47,500

hands-on experience through the use of iPads with apps currently used by Occupational Therapy Assistant (OTA) professionals for patient rehabilitation, funded by Richard and Linda Jensen. Equipment and supplies also were provided by a gift from The Foundation for Geriatric Education, which funds the education of health care professionals specializing in geriatrics and is supported by NHC.

Science students are utilizing six new LabQuest interfaces, funded by Dr. Kevin Patton, Lion Den Inc., SCC professor emeritus. The new technology allows

SCC is a viable step for all people looking to pursue careers in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) which are essential for economic growth. Gifts from businesses, organizations and individuals in our community are key to maintaining the high-quality education students need for these jobs.

Pre-engineering students are benefitting from current technology through laptops funded by Ameren Missouri. Ameren originally purchased the equipment to start the mobile computer lab and continues to make additions to the lab.

1 Meet Tess – Rotary Club of St. Charles/

Noonday Scholarship Recipient – When Tess

was younger, her home schooling lacked

structure, and she had not learned basic

math skills such as long division. At 16, Tess

was working full time and began saving for

her own apartment. She envied her friends

when they went off to college but knew that

was out of reach for her since she just had

enough money to “get by.”

Tess eventually went to work for a

company that offered tuition reimbursement,

and she jumped at the opportunity to begin

classes at SCC. Tess took advantage of the ACE

Tutoring Center and was able to advance her

math skills. Through her hard work and with

the help of scholarships, Tess is pursuing her

dream of becoming a nurse.

2 Meet Steve – First State Bank Scholarship Recipient – Steve is in the National Guard and said he signed up for classes at SCC because he knew there was something more for him in the future. He took advantage of SCC’s Career Services office to find his chosen profession. Graduating with an Associate of Arts degree in 2014 was the first step for him in his plans to pursue a bachelor’s degree in exercise science and a doctorate degree in physical therapy. While attending SCC, he was a founding member of the Student Veteran Organization. He eventually became the club’s president, proudly volunteering his time to ensure that other veterans attending SCC had the support they needed to be successful in school.

SCC Foundation Mini-Grants Fund Academic Enhancements

SCC students took home top awards from the Phi Beta Lambda State

Leadership Conference in Columbia, Mo., in April 2014 and the National

Thanks to support from the campus and community, business students

in SCC’s Phi Beta Lambda chapter were able to compete in statewide and

national competitions.

Events and educational opportunities like these provide first-rate academic

and real-world experiences to community college students, comparable to

what’s available to those who attend four-year institutions.

Also funded by generous members of our campus and community in the

past year were an archaeology field school, Skype tutoring for online students,

podcasting equipment and more.

Since 1995, the Employee Sponsored Program (ESP) has been fulfilling the mission of spreading compassion and goodwill to students, co-workers and our community.
