On behalf of the contributors to this guide, I would like to welcome you to Jamestown and the surrounding community. This area has been blessed with several geographic features that have made it a place of note from the time of the nomadic prehistoric inhabitants to the present day. Located at the confluence of two scenic rivers, the James and Pipestem, it was a natural site for congregation and development. With the coming of the settlement of the West, the area was in the path of the transcontinental Northern Pacific Railroad. In order to provide protection for the railroad workers Fort Seward was established and a small town grew within the luxuriant valley under its protection. During that era, the offer of protection, transportation and homesteadable land was enough to rapidly populate Jamestown and the surrounding area. This guide is designed to provide you with some details of the myriad things to see and do within our city and county. It is also intended to serve as a resource to get more information

on those elements that are of interest to you. There is a friendliness and acceptance that are grounded in a historic dependence on each other. I encourage you to come and see for yourself that there are still people who speak to strangers on the street, that there really are amber waves of grain and buffalo grazing in native prairie pastures. Come and join us, share in our community that reveres the past, applauds the present and looks confidently toward the future.

Alden Kollman, PresidentBuffalo City Tourism

The James River, at least according to lore, was named by a lost French-Canadian fur trader in the early 1800s. A trader named Jacques became lost and despondent while traveling the Dakota Plains. He finally sat along the shores of an unnamed river certain he would die there. Later that day other traders of his party found him and teased him about losing his way. He countered he wasn’t lost; he was sitting beside his own river that he had just claimed. For the rest of the excursion, Jacques’ companions called the stream the River Jacques which caught on. The name is reflected on maps from the 1830s and 1840s and was later anglicized into the James River. This story is impossible to confirm. We do know that the James River name, and the name Jamestown, were established in 1872 when Thomas Rosser, chief engineer of the Northern Pacific Railroad, traveled through the area surveying the planned line. He said the river valley reminded him of his home area of Jamestown, Va. The railroad played a critical part in the early growth of Jamestown. Tracks were constructed from the east to the James River in 1872 and continued west to the Missouri River in 1873 where financial problems halted construction for a decade. The construction crews and early settlers were protected by the soldiers stationed at Fort Seward. The soldiers enforced the laws of the territory and guarded surveyors and other parties traveling the region but never faced conflict with the Native American population. From 1872 to 1883, Jamestown remained a small town along a railroad that dead-ended 100 miles to the west. That changed when the Northern Pacific Railroad became a transcontinental line with a golden spike ceremony in Montana in the fall of 1883. Now Jamestown was a major railroad town along a line that connected the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. The village of Jamestown became the city of Jamestown and started unprecedented growth that resulted in a community that offered churches,

History of Jamestownschools, stores and residences to a growing population in the area. Agriculture became a cornerstone of the area. The Homestead Act made 160 acres of farmland available to anyone willing to work it. Others chose to buy land from the railroad which had been given large tracts by the U.S. government as an incentive to build. The number of these farms grew as immigrants and American citizens saw the opportunities on the Dakota Plains. These farms produced the commodities that the railroad hauled to the population centers in the east. The farm population also served as the customer base for the growing number of stores, churches and schools in Jamestown. From these roots, Jamestown grew. It continues to serve as a railroad and agricultural center and has added tourism and manufacturing sectors to its economy.

Birds of a feather flock together and so do the people who like to watch them. On average, 22 million bird watchers travel each year to observe, photograph or study birds in the U.S., according to a report by North Dakota Tourism.

BIRD JAMESTOWN

BirdJamestown.com

Jamestown and Carrington are in the heart of the Prairie Potholes Region. This landscape is made up of prairie grasslands and prairie wetlands, thickets, deciduous forests, hay fields, shelter belts and farmland. All of these elements make for excellent nesting places for more than 320 species of birds that fly through the area during migration seasons.

The Prairie Potholes Region is also recommended for birding in two best-selling books on the topic: * Chris Santella’s “Fifty Place to Go Birding Before You Die: Birding Experts Share the World’s Greatest Travel Destinations” * Patricia Schultz’ New York Times bestseller “1,000 Place to See Before You Die: A Traveler’s Life List”

North Dakota has 63 national wildlife refuges, more than any other state, according to Birding Drives Dakota (BDD), a nonprofit organization formed to promote birding and protect the natural resources of the area. Two nearby are Arrowwood National Wildlife Refuge and Chase Lake Wildlife Refuge. BBD has developed birding routes from Jamestown and Carrington that guide people to the best sites for catching a glimpse of birding enthusiasts’ “life birds,” birds that birders will likely only see once in a lifetime.

Page 15: 2014 Jamestown Area Source Guide

1313

It is no coincidence that hundreds of species fly over the Jamestown and Carrington area of North Dakota twice a year; it lies in the birds’ migration route. The best time for viewing a wide variety of birds is May through July, when diversity and numbers are at their peek, according to BDD. Want to see different species of waterfowl? April and October are the best times to visit. Fancy a peek at different species of raptors? April, September and October are when these birds tend to be here. For more information about birding in the Jamestown and Carrington areas, go to BirdJameestown.com or call 1-800-222-4766.

Arrowwood National Wildlife RefugeArrowwood National Wildlife Refuge has 16,000 acres made up of lakes, marshes, prairie grasslands, wooded coulees and cultivated fields. Arrowwood is a perfect venue for wildlife viewing and birding. The lands and lakes are also open for hunting and fishing, 20 miles north of Jamestown on U.S. Highway 281. www.fws.gov/arrowwood

Chase Lake National Wildlife RefugeEstablished in 1908 for the protection of the American White Pelican, today, it is home to the pelicans’ largest nesting colony in North America. Thousands of pelicans nest on the lake every spring and summer. Located 40 miles northwest of Jamestown. www.fws.gov/arrowwood/chaselake_nwr

The World’s Largest Buffalo Monument and the Frontier VillageVisitors to Jamestown can visit the days of pioneers with a stop at Frontier Village. The ode to the prairie has 24 buildings, many filled with historical artifacts, relocated to Jamestown from across the state.

Visitors can also find the Kirkpatrick Gallery, where local artists display their wares, the Louis L’Amour Writer’s Shack celebrating the life of Jamestown’s most famous author, and the original railroad depot built in 1880.

No trip to Jamestown is complete without a photo op in front of the World’s Largest Buffalo monument, Dakota Thunder. This statue was constructed in 1959 and weighs 60 tons and stands 25 feet tall.

There is no admission cost to the Frontier Village or the World’s Largest Buffalo monument.

The village is most active and alive during the summer season from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Memorial Day through Labor Day. Guests can visit during the offseason from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

Boyhood Home of Louis L’AmourLouis Dearborn LaMoore was born in Jamestown on March 22, 1908, as the seventh child of Dr. Louis Charles LaMoore and Emily Dearborn LaMoore. His father was a large-animal veterinarian, local politician and farm-equipment broker who had arrived in Dakota Territory in 1882.

One might suggest L’Amour first encountered cowboys as they traveled through Jamestown with their livestock on their way to or from ranches in Montana. He spent much of his free time at the local library reading and on the schoolgrounds of the Franklin School. At the age of 16 the family left the area after a series of bank failures that devastated the economy and began the wandering years that defined L’Amour.

Franklin School

Visit the school where writer Louis L’Amour received all of his formal education. The building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and was repurposed into space for a local cable company in 2001. It maintains its tie to the functioning school and provides educational and meeting facilities for the community.

Fort Seward Visitors to Jamestown can visit the Fort Seward Historic Site year round.

The site was an active fort from 1872 to 1877, and the soldiers stationed there were charged with protecting the survey and construction crews associated with the building of the Northern Pacific Railroad.

The largest flagpole in North Dakota is also at Fort Seward. The 130-foot pole flies a 30- by 60-foot flag on summer days as long as weather permits. The flag is visible from most locations in Jamestown.

The Veteran’s Memorial Wall was erected in 2007. The wall memorializes individuals who lost their lives in military conflicts since the Spanish-American War. It also lists Medal of Honor recipients and prisoners of war.

An interpretive center is open from Memorial Day through Labor Day from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. There is no admission charge.

The people of Jamestown and surrounding communities reflect the beauty of the area in their giving and friendly spirit. Rarely does a week go by without a fundraiser being held for a local organization, charity, group or activity, supported by a generous community.

According to 2010 census data, the average Jamestown citizen most likely has German or Norwegian ancestry. Food is very important to these cultures with knoephla soup and kuchen featured in some restaurants, and lefse and lutefisk served at some church suppers each year.

The population of Jamestown was 15,427 in 2010, making it the eighth most populated city in North Dakota at that time.

The population of Jamestown is somewhat younger than other parts of the state. The average age of a Jamestown citizen is 39.9 years old. The largest age demographic in the city is 20- to 24-year-olds, 8.8 percent of the

city’s population, which may be due in part to the bustling University of Jamestown. The university saw a 16 percent increase in its fall 2013 freshman class and a 4 percent increase in overall tuition. As of February 2014, 905 students were studying at the university.

The next largest age group is 50- to 54-year-olds at 7.6 percent; 45- to 49-year-olds and 55- to 59-year-olds both tied at 6.9 percent each.

Local EconomyAgriculture plays a major role in the economy of Jamestown and Stutsman County. Corn and soybeans are major crops grown, along with some wheat, oats, barley and other small grains. Livestock is also produced especially in western Stutsman County.

Jamestown’s economy also includes a number of manufacturing businesses. These industries produce components for the aerospace industry, farm and industrial equipment and french fries, to name just a few products.

I invite you to consider the benefits of attending University of Jamestown, one of the Midwest’s finest Liberal Arts universities. U.S. News and World Report, in its “Best Colleges 2014” rankings, placed the University at No. 35 in the Midwest, making it North Dakota’s highest-ranked Top Tier School in any category. Established in 1883 as Jamestown College, University of Jamestown features interactive classes in which you will get to know your professors, an active campus lifestyle, and a wide range of majors and minors from which to choose.

Founded by Presbyterian settlers, the university has been shaping minds and building character since 1883. We offer more than 40 areas of study to our approximately 1,000 students, and our 110-acre campus is one of the most beautiful places to study in the region. We have recently added a master’s degree in education offered on campus and online, an online RN to BSN program, and a doctor of physical therapy program in Fargo.

In the classroom, you will nearly always find a full-time faculty member teaching your class; we do not have graduate assistants and use only a small number of part-time faculty. Our students build lasting relationships and go on to successful and productive careers.

A Jamestown graduate has both a broad foundation in the liberal arts and in-depth knowledge in a discipline. Your experience is enhanced by involvement in more than 30 campus activities and organizations including an array of athletic teams, student leadership organizations, a full range of arts programs, and honorary societies.

At University of Jamestown, we like to say “Your Success. Our Tradition,” because of our excellent track record of successful alumni.

University of Jamestown a Top Tier schoolRecent graduates have gone on to work in key professional positions with Deloitte, the Department of Defense, the U.S. Senate, Wells Fargo, BP Oil, Sanford Health, United Technologies, Microsoft and 3M, to name just a few.

Ninety-eight percent of our graduates of the past two years were employed or attending graduate school within six months of graduation.

Take a few moments to peruse our website at uj.edu, and then fill out our online application for admission. An admission counselor will be happy to talk with you or to arrange a campus visit—all you have to do is ask!

Sincerely,President Robert Badal

Wimbledon Midland Continental Depot Transportation Museum Featuring Peggy Lee The museum celebrates the history of Midland Continental, a short line railroad that operated between 1912 and 1970. The railroad was planned as a north-south transcontinental line to bring grain from Winnipeg, Manitoba to Galveston, Texas. Only 77 miles of the railroad were built, between Wimbledon and Edgeley.

The museum also honors Peggy Lee, a renowned singer, songwriter and actress who lived and worked at the depot with her family from 1934 to 1937. Marvin Egstrom, father of Norma Egstrom, who later became Peggy Lee, was the depot agent. Lee graduated from Wimbledon High School in 1937.

The main floor of the depot building is dedicated to the Midland Continental railroad, while the upstairs living room showcase’s Lee’s life and career.

The museum is open from 1 to 4 p.m. Memorial Day through Labor Day and by appointment. Admission is a freewill donation.

Medicine Wheel ParkThe Medicine Wheel Park at Valley City State University allows visitors to see how people understood and tracked time and the seasons before clocks and calendars. The park has two solar calendars, including a horizontal calendar that is 213 feet around, with 28 spokes representing the number of days in the lunar cycle. Other spokes represent the positions of sunsets and sunrises, and a solar system scale model reaches from the center of the medicine wheel—representing the sun—to Pluto, a third of a mile away.

Twelve Native American burial mounds can also be found within the park.
