lar they spend at Wapiti -for every $100, rewardsmembers receive a $5 gift certificate. There are other promotions associated withthis program, includingbirthday and anniversary promotions. “Digital mar-keting has been huge,”Morgan said.

The flood and the result-ing damage caused morethan 200 days of closure for the restaurant in late 2013

and early 2014. The river  just behind the restaurant (where the water wheel is)

was contained by its retain-ing wall; but, the water that

was covering Elkhorn Ave-nue could not be preventedfrom entering the restau-rant, which is located onthe lowest level of 247 W.

Elkhorn Avenue. As Nelson and his wife,

Berenice, were being air-lifted out of their home in

Glen Haven during theflood, “water came in (tothe Wapiti) down the walk-

way from Elkhorn,” hesaid. “We had 3 feet of

water and mud in the res-taurant, including a smallbrook trout swimming in

our ladies restroom!” The water entered slowly, pre- venting structural damage, but the Nelsons could not access Estes Park for morethan a week after they

 were evacuated.

It fell to executive chef Scott Rashid, who has

 worked for the Nelsons

since they purchased thebusiness in 2005, and therest of the local kitchenand front-of-house staff tostart bailing out the water and shoveling out the mud.

The Wapiti’s landlord -Dr. James Durward -replaced all of the drywall

in the renovation of thepub and the Nelsons tookadvantage of the completerenovation to make therestrooms ADA compliant, and expand the kitchenfacilities. Other changes

were necessitated by theflood, including streamlin-ing the menu.

“I have basically a new restaurant,” Nelson said,“We did take the chance toreally go through our menu and streamlinethings to the guest favor-ites, to focus on high quali-

ty and doing everythingthat we do to the highest level possible.” Along withthe high-quality Coloradobeef, all ingredients arelocally or regionally sourc-es whenever possible, including Red Bird chick-

en. There are vegetarianand gluten-free options onthe menu as well.

These ef forts have paidoff: “We were up consider-ably over last year, the sup-port we had from the townand our guests was phe-nomenal,” Nelson said. Thebusiness took advantage of

a low rate disaster recov-ery business loan offeredby the SBA to make therepairs and renovation tothe facility. Nelson is sograteful to this crew - 90%of his employees cameback after the long closureof the restaurant.

“I think from a business

standpoint, we are within a percent of last year, which

was a record year. Thetown and various market-ing districts and boards dida great job of getting peo-ple back.” Nelson predictsit will be an additionalthree or four years for fullfinancial recovery. The Nel-

sons purchased the Wapitiin 2005; originally fromNebraska, both Tory andBerenice have been work-ing in Estes Park since1995. They met at Nicky’s,

 where they both worked.

he said. “The flood really brought attention to the

working class here in EstesPark, that half of them areon the other side of 34 and36 and the other half are

working two jobs because if they don’t, they can’t affordto live in this community.”

The residence buildingthat is included with the new

wellness center complex willbe designed to house profes-sionals, he said, includingpolice, fire department, teachers, and nurses in long-

term leases so they can livelocally. “I don’t have to dothat, I want to do that for thecommunity,” he said. “I real-ly want to work toward creat-ing a year-round economy.”

groups are starting to bookat The Stanley again.

Another issue that washighlighted by the flood wasthe lack of local housing for the work force. Just after the

flood when Cullen request-ed a facility report from hisengineering department, he

was informed that the entireengineering department didnot live locally - they werestuck east of Lyons, separat-ed from Estes Park by the

 washed-out roads.“Collectively, I lost 30

years of knowledge of thisbuilding, because they couldn’t get here,” he said,“there’s no question” recov-ery would have been a lot quicker if the engineeringteam had been able to helpafter the flood. In fact, Cul-len reported, he lost about

50% of his work force after the flood.“Labor (in Estes Park) has

been one of the greater chal-lenges I have faced globally, even with over a dozenhotels in foreign countries,”

downtown Denver to here inan hour and 15 minutes, andmaybe have a 15-minutedelay. Instead they are goingon a three-hour parking lot adventure to Breckenridge.”

People who have travel10-12 hours to get to EstesPark don’t worry about theextra 15 minutes, Cullen

said. “We’ve seen a 14-15%increase in states outside of Colorado and it’s all individ-ual transients. They spendgood money, and they aregood shoppers,” he said, explaining he knows that because the housekeepersat The Stanley complainabout cleaning up so many

shopping bags from therooms, many more than inprevious years.

This trend made up for the loss in Colorado visitors,Cullen said, and in Septem-ber and October, corporate

ous year, but the hotel host-ed “an entirely different cus-tomer and customer mix”this year. We’ve had hugeincreases (in visitors) fromIowa, Kansas, Texas, Louisi-

ana and a small increasefrom California. Colorado isactually down,” he said, including Front Range cor-porate bookings. Cullenattributes this trend to theextensive reporting on thehighway 34 and 36 delaysand closures by local andregional media.

“It seems to me the closer  you are to Estes Park, thestories and bulletins about routes 34 and 36 have kept people from Fort Collins,Loveland, Boulder, and Den-

ver away from us,” he said. This was unfortunatebecause it gave an incorrect
