Prayer of Preparation: As we gather as God's people let us pray together: God of love and peace, you know what we think and feel. Touch our hearts that our thoughts and actions may be good so that we may love you and honour you, through Jesus Christ our Lord, AMEN. The Summary of the Commandments:

‘Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one; you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ Jesus said: ‘This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: you shall love your neighbour as yourself.’ Kyrie eleison (Dudman Setting)

The Confession

Let us confess our sins in penitence and faith, confident in God's forgiveness. God of mercy and grace, we have sometimes thought wrong things, and done wrong things and we have not always loved each other as we should. We are sorry. Forgive us and help us to love and obey you ,

through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. The Absolution {Celebrant}

Almighty God, who has promised forgiveness to all who turn to him in faith: pardon you and set you free from all your sins, strengthen you in all goodness and keep you in eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Prayer of the Day Almighty and everliving God, we humbly pray that, as your only Son was presented in the temple in accordance with the law, so we may be dedicated to you with pure and clean hearts; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

THE MINISTRY OF THE WORD Readings from CEV

First Reading: Hebrews 2:14-18

14 We are people of flesh and blood. That is why Jesus became one of us. He died to destroy the devil, who had power over death. 15 But he also died to rescue all of us who live each day in fear of dying. 16 Jesus clearly did not come to help angels, but he did come to help Abraham’s descendants. 17 He had to be one of us, so that he could serve God as our merciful and faithful high priest and sacrifice himself for the forgiveness of our sins. 18 And now that Jesus has suffered and was tempted, he can help anyone else who is tempted. Response: Hear the word of the Lord,

THANKS BE TO GOD

Psalm: 24 1 The earth is the Lord’s and all that is in it:

the compass of the world and those who dwell therein. 2 For he has founded it upon the seas:

and established it upon the waters. 3 Who shall ascend the hill of the Lord:

or who shall stand in his holy place? 4 Those who have clean hands and a pure heart: who have not set their soul upon idols, nor sworn their oath to a lie. 5 They shall receive blessing from the Lord:

and recompense from the God of their salvation. 6 Of such a kind as this are those who seek him:

those who seek your face, O God of Jacob. 7 Lift up your heads, O you gates, and be lifted up, you everlasting doors:

and the King of glory shall come in. 8 Who is the King of glory?:

the Lord, strong and mighty, the Lord mighty in battle. 9 Lift up your heads, O you gates, and be lifted up, you everlasting doors:

and the King of glory shall come in. 10 Who is the King of glory?:

the Lord of hosts, he is the King of glory.

WE STAND FOR THE READING OF THE HOLY GOSPEL AS A SIGN OF RESPECT AS WE GREET

OUR LORD WHO IS PRESENT IN HIS HOLY WORD. The Lord be with you

AND ALSO WITH YOU The gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to Saint Luke chapter 2 beginning at the 22nd verse. GLORY TO YOU, LORD JESUS CHRIST. 22 The time came for Mary and Joseph to do what the Law of Moses says a mother is supposed to do after her baby is born.[a] They took Jesus to the temple in Jerusalem and presented him to the Lord, 23 just as the Law of the Lord says, “Each first-born[b] baby boy belongs to the Lord.” 24 The Law of the Lord also says that parents have to offer a sacrifice, giving at least a pair of doves or two young pigeons. So that is what Mary and Joseph did. 25 At this time a man named Simeon was living in Jerusalem. Simeon was a good man. He loved God and was waiting for God to save the people of Israel. God’s Spirit came to him 26 and told him that he would not die until he had seen Christ the Lord. 27 When Mary and Joseph brought Jesus to the temple to do what the Law of Moses says should be done for a new baby, the Spirit told Simeon to go into the temple.28 Simeon took the baby Jesus in his arms and praised God, 29 “Lord, I am your servant, and now I can die in peace, because you have kept your promise to me. 30 With my own eyes I have seen what you have done to save your people, 31 and foreign nations will also see this. 32 Your mighty power is a light for all nations, and it will bring honor to your people Israel.” 33 Jesus' parents were surprised at what Simeon had said. 34 Then he blessed them and told Mary, “This child of yours will cause many people in Israel to fall and others to stand. The child will be like a warning sign. Many people will reject him, 35 and you, Mary, will suffer as though you had been stabbed by a dagger. But all this will show what people are really thinking.” 36 The prophet Anna was also there in the temple. She was the daughter of Phanuel from the tribe of Asher, and she was very old. In her youth she had been married for seven years, but her husband died. 37 And now she was eighty-four years old.[c] Night and day she served God in the temple by praying and often going without eating.[d]

Page 9: 2014 02 02 10am sheet family

9

38 At that time Anna came in and praised God. She spoke about the child Jesus to everyone who hoped for Jerusalem to be set free. 39 After Joseph and Mary had done everything that the Law of the Lord commands, they returned home to Nazareth in Galilee. 40 The child Jesus grew. He became strong and wise, and God blessed him. Gospel Response: This is the gospel of the Lord,

PRAISE TO YOU, LORD JESUS CHRIST.

Offertory Hymn: TiS 217 (i)

1. Love divine, all loves excelling, joy of heaven, to earth come down, fix in us thy humble dwelling, all thy faithful mercies crown: Jesus, thou art all compassion, pure unbounded love thou art; visit us with thy salvation, enter every trembling heart.

2. Come, almighty to deliver, let us all thy life receive; suddenly return, and never, never more thy temples leave: thee we would be always blessing, serve thee as thy hosts above, pray, and praise thee, without ceasing, glory in thy perfect love.

3. Finish then thy new creation, pure and spotless let us be, let us see thy great salvation, perfectly restored in thee: changed from glory into glory, till in heaven we take our place, till we cast our crowns before thee, lost in wonder, love and praise.

From the Locum; I am sorry not to be with you today, but I have a long standing commitment

in Ballarat. From now on I look forward to being with you on both Sundays

and Wednesdays, and in addition, as required. I plan to be in the Parish from

about 9.30a.m. each Wed. through until late afternoon. I will be available

for counselling, visits etc., as needed. Please feel free to contact me and

arrange a time. I am talking with the Wardens about our Lenten activities. I

will be offering a Lent Study group and we will have a similar service pattern

to those of the past few years.

A parish vacancy can be used as a positive time looking to the future, what is

your vision for the future of your Parish? Holy Trinity is blessed with great

physical resources and a vibrant congregation. The Church is placed in the

heart of Kew, and has great opportunities for Mission and service – how

might you seize those opportunities?

My prayer is that I can offer you a faithful ministry in which we seek to grow

in our faith, deepen our commitment and grow in our love for God and one

another.

In Christ’s Name
