Hymn: TiS 453 1. We limit not the truth of God to our poor reach of mind, by notions of our day and sect, crude, partial and confined: no, let a new and better hope within our hearts be stirred: the Lord has yet more light and truth to break forth from his word. 2. Our faithful forebears searching went the first steps of the way; this was the dawning, yet to grow into the perfect day. And grow it shall, our glorious sun will brighter rays afford: the Lord has yet more light and truth to break forth from his word.

3. O Father, Son, and Spirit, send us increase from above; enlarge, expand all living souls to comprehend your love; and make us all go on to know, with nobler powers conferred, that you have yet more light and truth to break forth from your word.

George Rawson 1807–89 alt.

Invocation: Blessed be God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

Blessed be God's kingdom, now and for ever. Greeting: The Lord be with you. AND ALSO WITH YOU. (see Ruth 2:4) Sentence: Do not worry, saying, ‘What will we eat?’ or ‘What will we wear?’ Strive first for the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Matthew 6.31, 33

Prayer of Preparation: As we gather as God's people let us pray together: God of love and peace, you know what we think and feel. Touch our hearts that our thoughts and actions may be good so that we may love you and honour you, through Jesus Christ our Lord, AMEN. The Summary of the Commandments:

‘Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one; you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ Jesus said: ‘This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: you shall love your neighbour as yourself.’ Kyrie eleison (Dudman Setting)

The Confession

Let us confess our sins in penitence and faith, confident in God's forgiveness. God of mercy and grace, we have sometimes thought wrong things, and done wrong things and we have not always loved each other as we should. We are sorry. Forgive us and help us to love and obey you ,

through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. The Absolution {Celebrant}

Almighty God, who has promised forgiveness to all who turn to him in faith: pardon you and set you free from all your sins, strengthen you in all goodness and keep you in eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Prayer of the Day O God, before whose face we are not made righteous even by being right: free us from the need to justify ourselves by our own anxious striving, that we may be abandoned to faith in you alone; through Jesus Christ. Amen.

THE MINISTRY OF THE WORD Readings from CEV

First Reading: 1 Corinthians 3.18-4.5 18 Don’t fool yourselves! If any of you think you are wise in the things of this world, you will have to become foolish before you can be truly wise.19 This is because God considers the wisdom of this world to be foolish. It is just as the Scriptures say, “God catches the wise when they try to outsmart him.” 20 The Scriptures also say, “The Lord knows that the plans made by wise people are useless.” 21-22 So stop bragging about what anyone has done. Paul and Apollos and Peter[a] all belong to you. In fact, everything is yours, including the world, life, death, the present, and the future. Everything belongs to you, 23 and you belong to Christ, and Christ belongs to God. 4 Think of us as servants of Christ who have been given the work of explaining God’s mysterious ways. 2 And since our first duty is to be faithful to the one we work for, 3 it doesn’t matter to me if I am judged by you or even by a court of law. In fact, I don’t judge myself. 4 I don’t know of anything against me, but that doesn’t prove that I am right. The Lord is my judge. 5 So don’t judge anyone until the Lord returns. He will show what is hidden in the dark and what is in everyone’s heart. Then God will be the one who praises each of us. Response: Hear the word of the Lord,

THANKS BE TO GOD

Page 7: 2014 03 02 10am sheet family

7

Psalm: 131

The response is sung first by the choir and then by the congregation. Thereafter it is sung by the congregation after each verse.

The verses are sung by the choir.

Response: (all)

Verses (sung by choir)

1. O Lord, my heart is not proud nor haughty my eyes. I have not gone after things too great nor marvels beyond me. Response

2. For truly I have set my soul in silence and peace. Like a child at its mother's breast, even so is my soul. Response

3. O Israel, hope in the Lord, both now and for ever. Place your trust in the living God all the days of your life. Response

WE STAND FOR THE READING OF THE HOLY GOSPEL AS A SIGN OF RESPECT AS WE GREET

OUR LORD WHO IS PRESENT IN HIS HOLY WORD. The Lord be with you

AND ALSO WITH YOU The gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to Saint Matthew chapter 6 beginning at the 22nd verse. GLORY TO YOU, LORD JESUS CHRIST. 22 Your eyes are like a window for your body. When they are good, you have all the light you need. 23 But when your eyes are bad, everything is dark. If the light inside you is dark, you surely are in the dark. 24 You cannot be the slave of two masters! You will like one more than the other or be more loyal to one than the other. You cannot serve both God and money. 25 I tell you not to worry about your life. Don’t worry about having something to eat, drink, or wear. Isn’t life more than food or clothing?26 Look at the birds in the sky! They don’t plant or harvest. They don’t even store grain in barns. Yet your Father in heaven takes care of them. Aren’t you worth more than birds? 27 Can worry make you live longer?[a] 28 Why worry about clothes? Look how the wild flowers grow. They don’t work hard to make their clothes.29 But I tell you that Solomon with all his wealth[b] wasn’t as well clothed as one of them. 30 God gives such beauty to everything that grows in the fields, even though it is here today and thrown into a fire tomorrow. He will surely do even more for you! Why do you have such little faith? 31 Don’t worry and ask yourselves, “Will we have anything to eat? Will we have anything to drink? Will we have any clothes to wear?” 32 Only people who don’t know God are always worrying about such things. Your Father in heaven knows that you need all of these. 33 But more than anything else, put God’s work first and do what he wants. Then the other things will be yours as well. 34 Don’t worry about tomorrow. It will take care of itself. You have enough to worry about today. Gospel Response: This is the gospel of the Lord,

PRAISE TO YOU, LORD JESUS CHRIST.

Final Hymn: TiS 130

1. We plough the fields, and scatter the good seed on the land, but it is fed and watered by God’s almighty hand; he sends the cold in winter, the warmth to swell the grain, the breezes and the sunshine, and soft refreshing rain.

All good gifts around us are sent from heaven above; then thank the Lord, O thank the Lord for such abounding love.

2. We glorify the maker of everything that is, who gives to us to care for the earth, the air, the seas, who wills that all the peoples might have their daily bread, that we might share our plenty as channels of God’s love.

3. We thank you, gracious giver of all things bright and good, the seed-time and the harvest, our life, our health, our food. Help us in our thanksgiving to use your gifts with care, to serve as friends and neighbours your children everywhere.
