Nationally, more than 400,000 children are currently living in foster care because their families are in crisis or unable to provide for their essential well-being.

Nationally The average age of children in foster care is 9. The average length of stay for children in care was 774 days. Research shows that less than half of former foster youth are employed at 23, and less than

three percent have finished college.

In Michigan (as of fiscal year 2012) 34,219 children were victims of abuse and neglect. Approximately, 13,000 children are in foster care at any given time – most are in temporary

foster care settings because of parental abuse or neglect. Seventy percent of teens who emancipate from foster care report that they want to attend

college, but fewer than ten percent who graduate from high school enroll in college, and of those less than three percent graduate from college.

In 2007, Western Michigan University established the Seita Scholarship. Named to honor Dr. John Seita, the program provides a tuition scholarship to students who have lived in foster care. It also provides a campus coach and resources for additional college expenses like room and board, books and fees.

In 2009, Michigan Education Trust established the Charitable Tuition Program and offered Charitable Contracts and contribution options. Public Acts 134 & 135 of 2009 provides a Michigan tax deduction for contributions to MET Charitable Tuition Program from individuals and entities.

In 2012, MET held fund raising events to provide $21,800 to four Michigan universities with established programs to aid foster care youth: Western Michigan University, Michigan State University, Ferris State University and University of Michigan-Ann Arbor. The funds were distributed to students through the universities’ financial aid offices.

Currently, nine Michigan colleges and universities have implemented programs to support former foster care youth who want to earn a college degree: Baker College – Flint, Eastern Michigan University, Ferris State University, Michigan State University, Saginaw Valley State University, University of Michigan - Ann Arbor, University of Michigan – Flint, Wayne State University and Western Michigan University. These universities are eligible to receive MET funds.

Donations to MET’s Charitable Contributions program will directly assist students with tuition, fees, room, board, books and supplies.
