Clams, wildClams in the U.S. are fished using a variety of techniques from handrakes for Hard Clams to dredges for Atlantic Surf Clams. Althoughhabitat effects vary, bycatch is generally low. Clam fisheries are gen-erally well-managed, but only Atlantic Surf and Geoduck Clams areabundant. Hard Clams are often referred to by their size, withnames like Littleneck, Cherrystone, and Chowder.

Mussels and Oysters, farmedShellfish are filter feeders and don't require supplemental food. When farms use suspended bags, nets, or cages-as opposed todredging shellfish grown on the substrate-the operations are moreocean-friendly.

Mackerels Atlantic, Cero, King*, and Spanish* Mackerels are all at healthy levelsof abundance. Mackerels grow fast and produce many young, qual-ities that have enabled many populations to rebound from recentdepletion. Most mackerel fishers use hook-and-line and net gearswith little bycatch. Marine mammal catches remain a problem inthe mid-water trawl fishery that catches Atlantic Mackerel.

Mahimahi, pole- and troll-caughtMahimahi grow fast, live short lives, and withstand high fishingpressure. Pole- and troll-fisheries catch Mahimahi with little by-catch compared to longline fisheries.

Salmon, Alaska wildThe wild Alaska Salmon fishery is well-managed and the species’habitat is fairly healthy. There are concerns, however, that moreneeds to be done to protect natural spawning habitat and to prop-erly manage hatcheries.

Striped BassStriped Bass are wild-caught* and hybrids are farmed. Effectivefisheries management helped wild Striped Bass recover from se-vere depletion in the 1980s to high abundance today. FarmingStriped Bass results in few escapes and minimal pollution. How-ever their feed is derived from wild fish populations.

Tilapia, U.S.-farmedNot native to the U.S., Tilapia are freshwater fish that require verylittle fishmeal. When raised in closed systems in the U.S., they havevery low environmental impact.

Albacore, Bigeye, and Yellowfin Tuna, (U.S. Pacific Albacore ) pole- and troll-caughtTunas are fast-growing, prolific breeders, and wide-ranging, butmany populations remain depleted. The low bycatch associatedwith pole- and troll-caught tuna makes them a better alternativeto longline, drift gillnet, or purse-seine caught tuna.

American (“Maine”) Lobster, U.S. and CanadaU.S. and Canadian Lobster populations remain abundant. How-ever, North Atlantic Right Whales, an endangered species, still be-come entangled in lobster fishing gear.

Catfish, U.S.-farmedSouthern U.S. fish farmers raise Catfish in large earthen ponds. Some water pollution results, but Catfish escapes are rare. Catfishrequire much less fishmeal and fish oil in their feed than otherfarmed fish.

Dungeness, King, and Stone CrabsThese crab species are fairly abundant thanks to wise manage-ment. Crab fishers use relatively low-bycatch traps (or pots).

Pacific CodFaring much better than their Atlantic counterparts, Pacific Codpopulations are healthy and abundant. Managers limit catchesand account for bycatch.

Pacific HalibutAlthough they grow slowly and can live over 50 years, Pacific Hal-ibut remain abundant due to responsible management. Fishersmay own shares of the total annual catch, eliminating the danger-ous incentive to fish competitively.

Sablefish (Black Cod)Sablefish are a sustainable alternative to severely depleted AtlanticCod. Widespread adoption of better fishing practices successfullyreduced bycatch, benefitting albatrosses.

Shrimp, U.S.-farmedFarmed shrimp require high amounts of fishmeal and fish oil intheir food compared to other farmed fish and shellfish. U.S. farmersusually treat discharged water to reduce pollution.

SquidMany squid species exist worldwide. Squid grow fast and often re-produce before they are a year old, characteristics which help themwithstand high fishing pressure. Most are vulnerable to changesin environmental conditions.

Albacore*, Bigeye*, Yellowfin*, and Skipjack Tuna, canned or longline-caught

Despite having high fertility and wide ranges, many Albacore Tuna(“chunk white”) and Bigeye, Yellowfin, and Skipjack Tuna (“chunklight”) populations are declining from heavy fishing pressure.Globally, few regulations exist for tuna longline, drift gillnet, andpurse-seine fisheries. These fisheries also catch large numbers ofmarine mammals, sea turtles, sharks, and young tunas. Despite U.S.“Dolphin Safe” standards for the canned tuna market, affected dol-phins are not recovering.

Blue*, Snow, and Tanner CrabsExploited heavily, depletion affects some populations of these crabspecies. Blue Crabs suffer from habitat loss and pollution problems.Certain biological traits in Snow Crabs—like egg brooding for al-most a year—make them particularly vulnerable to fishing pres-sure. Fishers catch crabs mainly with low-bycatch traps.

MonkfishMonkfish are caught along with other groundfish like Atlantic Codand Haddock in the Northeast U.S. Overfishing, poor manage-ment, and depletion mar this fishery.

Pangasius Catfish, imported farmedFarmed in native Asia, Pangasius go by many names including Cat-fish, Swai, Tra and Basa. Most Pangasius are farmed in ponds wheredischarge is untreated, polluting local waterways. Because of theircommercial importance to many Asian countries, local govern-ments are developing aquaculture practices to help reduce envi-ronmental impacts of farming.

Rainbow Trout, farmedFeed for Rainbow Trout contains large amounts of fishmeal andfish oil. Most U.S. Rainbow Trout farmers use freshwater flow-through systems (called raceways), which spread pollution. Rain-bow Trout are native to the Pacific Northwest where the majorityof U.S. farms are located.

Sea ScallopsWhile no longer overfished, controversial management measuresfor wild Sea Scallops inadequately address high fishing pressure.Bottom dredges and trawls used to catch Sea Scallops damagehabitat, and there is unintended catch of endangered sea turtles, depleted Atlantic Cod, and other groundfish. One scallop fisheryin Argentina has received Marine Stewardship Council certificationfor sustainable management.

SwordfishSwordfish in the North Atlantic show signs of recovery due tostronger catch regulations. Their abundance appears healthy inthe North Pacific, but their status is unclear in other parts of the Pa-cific. Most Swordfish are longline-caught, with high bycatch of al-batrosses, sea turtles, and sharks.

Atlantic Flounders and SolesLong-term overfishing and high bycatch plague Atlantic ground-fish fisheries. Naturally vulnerable to fishing pressure, most Atlanticflounders and soles remain depleted. Strong management meas-ures are helping Summer Flounder* (fluke) rebound.

Rockfish, U.S. West CoastMost rockfish are long-lived, late to mature, slow growing, andare affected by environmental factors such as warm ocean tem-peratures. This makes them especially vulnerable to fishing pres-sure and lengthens recovery time for overfished species.Recovery plans introduced since the late 1990s are slowly help-ing vulnerable rockfish populations increase, but full recovery forthe most depleted and slow growing species is not expected formany decades.

Atlantic Bluefin TunaHighly valued by sushi connoisseurs, Atlantic Bluefin Tuna havebeen exploited heavily since the 1970s and are extremely de-pleted. Since 1996, the International Union for Conservation ofNature (IUCN) has listed the western population of AtlanticBluefin Tuna as critically endangered and the eastern populationas endangered. Bluefin Tuna can also be caught as juveniles andfattened in net pens. This “farming” method prevents the fishfrom spawning, further reducing wild populations.

Atlantic CodDecades of overfishing drove Atlantic Cod populations to historiclow levels. Despite management measures that include permits, time and area closures, gear restrictions, minimum size limits andtrip limits, populations show no sign of rebuilding. Bottom trawlingfor Atlantic Cod destroys habitat.

Atlantic HalibutFishers use bottom trawls and longlines to catch Atlantic Halibut.Long-lived and slow to mature, this fish is naturally vulnerable tofishing pressure. Like Atlantic Cod, Atlantic Halibut populations inU.S. and Canadian waters crashed in the 1980s from overfishingand remain extremely depleted today.

Caviar from wild-caught sturgeonsWild sturgeons mature late and suffer from overfishing and habi-tat degradation worldwide. Outside the U.S., management effortsare generally poor. Caviar from farm-raised sturgeon is a good al-ternative.

Chilean Sea BassReally named Patagonian Toothfish, high market demand for thislong-lived fish drives depletion and creates an incentive for con-tinued illegal fishing. One small Patagonian Toothfish fishery in theSouth Atlantic is sustainably managed and certified to the MarineStewardship Council standard.

GroupersGenerally long-lived, many groupers change sex with age andspawn together in the same places every year, making them vul-nerable to overfishing. Most groupers sold in the U.S. come fromthe Gulf of Mexico, where management of grouper fisheries hashistorically been lacking. In U.S. waters, Snowy, Warsaw, Black, Go-liath, and Nassau Groupers are depleted.

Orange RoughySeverely depleted, Orange Roughy don’t mature until they’re atleast 20 years old and can live over 100 years. They live in deep wa-ters where habitat-damaging trawls catch them when they gatherin groups to feed or spawn. Fishing for Orange Roughy also catchesand kills a number of threatened deep-sea shark species.

Salmon, farmedHigh environmental costs of farming salmon include water pollu-tion, spread of diseases to wild fish populations, high content ofwild fish in feed, and overuse of antibiotics. In addition to AtlanticSalmon, farmers are now raising Chinook and Coho Salmon. All At-lantic Salmon sold in the U.S. are farmed. Wild Alaska Salmon area more ocean-friendly choice. See ranking on other side of thisguide for more information.

Sharks, importedSharks grow slowly, have few young, and are victims of wide-spread overfishing and bycatch. Despite laws in some countries(including the U.S.) against killing sharks just for their fins, demandfor shark-fin soup in Asia drives heavy and sometimes illegal fish-ing worldwide.

Shrimp, importedBottom trawls used to catch most wild shrimp damage habitatand kill many invertebrates, fish, and sea turtles. Coastalshrimp farming ruins life-supporting ecosystems such as man-groves and causes water pollution. Shrimp fisheries and farmsin the U.S. are generally better monitored and regulated. SeeShrimp, U.S.-farmed ranking on the other side of this guide formore information.
