TRANSCRIPT

Reflecting on Pacific Crest’s 20th anniversary, I am amazed by the work of our designers and instructors and humbled by the generosity of our volunteers and donors. Our members enjoy a World-Class performing arts experience, and none of it would be possible without you.

It is also important to recognize the parents of our performers, both past and present, for the years you have committed to driving your kids to private lessons, band rehearsals, guard shows, and Pacific Crest events.

Your involvement is key to the success of our youth.

To all the Southern California music educators, we owe you our gratitude for preparing and encouraging hundreds of students each year to participate in our program. Thanks to you, we get to work with some of the finest young musicians and color guard performers in Southern California.

I am so proud to be a part of this organization, and on behalf of our Board of Directors, I thank all of you for contributing during Pacific Crest’s 20th year.

I look forward to many, many more!

Phil MortensenPresident, Board of Directors

Dinner and Casino Night Celebrates 20th AnniversaryThe event re-engaged alumni and influenced the organization to archive 3,000 historical photos.

More than 90 alumni, Board, staff, and fans attended a catered dinner and casino night to celebrate Pacific Crest’s 20th Anniversary.

Past Board members Susan Barnard and Sue Perry chaired the event, which took place at the Diamond Bar Center on Friday, May 23rd. They even hired alumna, Angelica Skullr (Arias), whose family installed and staffed the games.

Jamie Fox (Barnard), coordinated the entertainment for the evening, which included a slide show of 3,000 photos, scanned from albums compiled by former corps photographer, Bill Johnson.

Tour Fund Gifts Increased in 2013New donors and members of our Sustaining Leaders Circle helped drive a 16% increase in donations.

When Pacific Crest launched its Sustaining Leaders Circle in 2011, Stephan and Teresa Hamilton were the first to join.

The Hamiltons were perennial donors at the Director’s Circle level of $500 per year. As Sustaining Leaders, a $50 donation is automatically transferred from their checking account each month. This enabled them to boost their annual gift to $600, an increase of 20%!

“The Sustaining Leaders Circle provides an easy way for us to support PC on an ongoing basis and at the same time increase our level of giving without having to write one large check each year,” explained Stephan.

A donation of $10 per month to the Pacific Crest Tour Fund will move our trucks and support vehicles over 200 miles. Just 33 cents per day makes that much of a difference. To learn more about the Sustaining Leaders Circle, visit www.pacific-crest.org/slc.

New LogoInspired by our past, our new logo symbolizes our commitment to a strong future by using the colors and the “wave” that you’ve come to associate with Pacific Crest.

The teal and gold are richer in hue and play a prominent role. We’ve replaced the circle with a crest, a symbol of group commitment, loyalty, and excellence.

Finally, we’ve made the “wave” stand out, changing the color from gold to black - a wholehearted recognition that our alumni and their contribution are the reasons we’re still strong today.

Drum Corps Appears in the Big, Loud & Live!By earning its highest championships seeding ever, the corps opened the annual cinema broadcast.

For the first time, Pacific Crest’s entire Drum Corps International (DCI) Prelims performance was shown in DCI’s 2013 annual cinema event. The event, presented by NCM Fathom Events and DCI, was screened in more than 600 theaters and was viewed by 49,000 spectators across the United States.

DCI Executive Director Dan Acheson congratulated Pacific Crest on its first-ever appearance. “It was a pleasure to welcome Pacific Crest to Drum Corps International’s 10th Annual Big, Loud, Live! broadcast. Many of the attendees were seeing Pacific Crest for the first time and were treated to a great performance. This was just one example of how Pacific Crest continues to provide a world-class experience for their members. The corps continues to grow as a performing group but even more impressively as a model non-profit performing arts organization.”

Diamond Bar Women’s Club Supports Pacific Crest Pacific Crest members benefit from its scholarship program.

For more than 20 years, Diamond Bar Women’s Club has awarded academic scholarships. The organization recently added arts and music scholarships and began awarding one each year to a Pacific Crest member. In 2013, this $1,000 scholarship went to Hannah Brown (2012-2014).

Orien Pagan is Past President of the Women’s Club. “We want to help arts and music students with their expenses, and we award a Pacific Crest member the music scholarship in recognition of their dedication and talent.”

Pacific Crest has forged relationships with community organizations, including the Diamond Bar Community Foundation, Diamond Bar Host Lions, Walnut Valley Rotary, and Diamond Bar City Council. The Women’s Club was particularly active this past year. In addition to funding the scholarship, members attended the 20th anniversary celebration and golf tournament.

U.S. Congressman Ed Royce (Left) presenting a California Senate Resolution to George Perry and his wife, Sue.

Board President George Perry RetiresU.S. Congressmen Ed Royce and State Senator Bob Huff honor Perry’s two decades of service.

George first got involved when his son, Ryan, performed with Pacific Crest in 1994. He was elected to the Board of Directors in 1996 and has served as President since 2009. During his tenure, George led Pacific Crest through its most significant growth in membership and performance quality.

“Over the past twenty years, I’ve watched Pacific Crest develop from a Division III start-up corps into the highly respected World Class Drum Corps it is today,” explained George. “To watch the members,

Debbie Clepper-Milligan Inducted into the George Perry Volunteer Hall of FameOur dedicated volunteers provide $100K worth of service each year.

Debbie Clepper-Milligan is a resident of Aliso Viejo, California, and works as an early childhood educator. She started volunteering in 2006, the first year her son, Ryan, performed with Pacific Crest.

Ryan aged out in 2010, but Debbie remained a member of our support staff. She has worked on our food service team, has driven a tour vehicle, and has served as a tour manager.

“I love being around the members. They are amazing to work for! Now I’m hooked. Thank you so much for trusting me with your organization and allowing me to be a part of this experience. I’d love to say that it’s altruistic of me to volunteer, but I get too much from it!”

who often come from competing high schools, mature and become a cohesive performing unit is a rewarding experience, and it has given me great pleasure.”

Meehan and Murphy Assume Leadership RolesProgram Coordinator Mark Gunderson continues to develop the Drum Corps staff.

Pacific Crest’s brass arranger, John Meehan, was recently promoted to Music Director. This is John’s third season with the corps, and he has established a team of composers and arrangers, including himself (brass), Michael Huestis (percussion), and Jim Wunderlich (electronics and soundscapes). John took over for former Music Director, Jeff Lee.

“My first two years working with the staff and members of Pacific Crest have been extremely rewarding,” said Meehan. “I can’t wait to take on these new responsibilities and see what we can accomplish in 2014!”

On the instructional team, Gunderson expanded Seth Murphy’s scope of responsibility. Seth continues to work alongside Brad Davis as Brass Co-Caption Head, but he will also act as Ensemble and Staff Coordinator. This will provide for more coordinated rehearsals and more effective staff leadership during those times when Gunderson is not with the corps.

Alumni Increase Interaction with Current MembersAlumni Partners Program served 31 members in 2013.

Created in 2010, the Pacific Crest Alumni Partners served 31 members in 2013, including age-outs and mem-bers in their third, fourth, or fifth year. The ultimate goal is to partner every member with an alumnus.

To participate in the program, alumni may visit their member at a rehearsal, send a package to their member on tour, or purchase a challenge coin for them. Members and alumni participate at whatever level they feel comfortable.

Howard Hsu coordinates the Alumni Partners Program. “I want to welcome home every Pacific Crest alum and give them the opportunity to share in the program they helped develop.” If you’re a past member of Pacific Crest and want to learn more about Alumni Partners, send Howard an email at [email protected].
