Architecture Committee Report for September 2013
NABB’s Architecture Committee heard several important applications this month.
We reviewed preliminary plans for the renovations to the Boston Public Library’s John-
son wing. Plans for the second floor renovation are proceeding apace, and we hope to be able to
schedule a larger NABB meeting to review the plans for the first floor sometime this winter.
The headmaster of the Commonwealth School came for a preliminary discussion of a
possible rear yard addition to replace the existing gym building. As the school already exceed the
allowed FAR (floor area ratio), we urged him to seek other options.
A renovation is being undertaken at 447 Beacon St., including a penthouse that will re-
place the existing outsized dormer. As the proposal is within zoning, and would be only slightly
higher than its neighbors, we did not oppose it, but asked that additional greenspace be added in
the rear and that a rear balcony which extended to the rear chimney line be replaced with a
smaller balcony. The Back Bay Architectural Commission (BBAC) approved the project with
these caveats, and also required that the front façade of the addition be faced in copper rather
than painted wood.
At its hearing on September 11, the BBAC approved renovations to the Nike building at
200 Newbury Street as well as a large temporary banner announcing the opening of the Boston
Architectural Center’s Green Alley project on October 18. It also revisited and approved the
renovations at 9 Commonwealth Avenue.
District 2 City Councilor Election — Forum on October 3
The Neighborhood Association of the Back Bay (NABB) is sponsoring a Forum Discussion on
Thursday October 3, 2013 from 6:30-8:00 p.m. in the Commonwealth Salon at the Boston Public
Library. The Forum will feature the two candidates in the District 2 City Councilor Election on
November 5th. David Jacobs, the charismatic and knowledgeable Editor/Publisher of the Boston
Courant will moderate the discussion. This event is an early chance to see and hear the candi-
dates debate in an intimate setting.
Walking Tour of the Back Bay given by William Young: October 15, 2013 The NABB Special Events Committee is please to offer a walking tour, “Back Bay 1860”, on
Tuesday, October 15th from 5:30-7:00. The tour will be led by William Young who is the Assistant
Director for Historic Districts for the City of Boston and has served as the staff to the Back Bay
Architectural Commission since 1991. In Mr. Young’s words, “as the title implies, I’ll concentrate
only on buildings from the 1860 decade, identifying common stylistic trends, popular materials, prominent
architects, and notable buildings.” This is the first in a series of tours, each focused on consecutive
phases of the neighborhood’s development and architecture. The tour will meet at the
Alexander Hamilton statue at the head of the Commonwealth Avenue Mall, just west of the
Public Garden. The tour is free and limited to the first 30 people. Reservations are required
and the deadline to reserve is Wednesday, October 9, 2013. To register, please visit the NABB
