The 2013 Auburn Bike Festi-val takes place on May 5 and ishosted by the Sierra FoothillsCycling Club (SFCC). The festi-val is free and features: three

club-led rides of 52, 35, and 20miles, a two mile Family FunRide, a 0.7 mile kids bike ride (for children age 7 and up), free

barbecue lunch for all ride par-ticipants, a raffle, the AuburnPolice Van, representatives fromlocal bike shops and represen-

tatives from the SFCC.President of SFCC, Larry

Matz, thinks the festival will bea good way to educate peopleabout cycling.

Its a chance to introducepeople to cycling who have nottried it before, said Matz. Itsalso an opportunity for those

already involved in cycling toenjoy a nice, spring day educat-ing the public on the benefits ofcycling.

    According to Auburn Bike

Works ownerLisa Kodl, cycling has sev-eral benefits.

    I feel thatit helpsclearyourhead,

    whetheryou are moun-

tain or road riding,Kodl said. Its agood way to save gasand get outdoors. We live in a

great mountain bikingarea. People can ride any-

where from their backdoor. Cycling has a goodsocial aspect as well.

Kodl stressed that allage groups can getinvolved in cycling. Chil-dren can start as early anddevelop a healthy life-long hobby. Auburn BikeWorks partners with thePlacer Foothills MountainBike Club, which hasmembers who are high

school age and younger. Its a good way for kids

to get to meet people whoenjoy the same thing,Kodl said.

Bill Marengo, owner ofBicycle Emporium inAuburn, said he believesand has found thatcycling is more than justexercise.

Cycling is now becom-ing in the Placer Countyarea a true lifestyle,Marengo said.

Marengo, who has beenriding a bike since he was8, said hes forged lifelongrelationships with fellowcyclists he meets up withtwo mornings a week forcoffee and a ride beforework.

Thats one of the coolthings about cycling is its

one of those sports youdont just do it alone or

dont just do it once andyoure done, Marengo

said. You dont have oneseason in a league whereyou have a friend for thatfour months then the sea-son is over. You cycle withbuddies and you cycle forlife.

Marengo said thoseinterested in learningabout cycling should stopinto a bike shop and askabout good rides and howto do it.

Any good bike shopshould point them in theright direction, Marengosaid.

And for those who areinto the lifestyle and wantto get better, Marengosaid the advice is a nobrainer.

Ride with better peo-ple, he said. If yourelooking to get better, dontbe scared to venture outon a ride with bettercyclists.

Shop or swapAtown Bikes will be

having their swap meeton April 28. The event isfree to buyers. Sellers canstill rent a space for $10.Marias taco truck will alsobe there.

    Its our first annual, but

we hope to do two a year, said Duke Jay, owner of

Atown Bikes. There willbe mountain bikes, roadbikes, BMX, anything bikerelated.

There will also be somepre-war Schwinn cruisersand at least one vendorselling new bike gear.

These things are a lotof fun, Jay said. Therewill be a ton of used stuffhere.

And remember, it is aswap meet, so barter for

your best buy and dickerfor that dynamite deal. I

just dont know if you cantrade for a taco though. That would be up toMaria.

Aron Yvuta of VictoryVelo bike shop believesthat the event will be agood chance to discussthe various biking optionshere in Auburn.

One of the most popu-lar trails is the CulvertTrail, also known as theClementine Trail, saidYvuta. It probably gets themost traffic and we, alongwith Auburn Bike Works, recently put in a lot ofwork cleaning it up. We arealso working on promot-ing Auburn Bike Park.

Victory Velo and otherAuburn bike shops also

    encourage proper bicyclesafety and techniques.

We endorse wearinghelmets and reflectiveclothing, said Yvuta. You should always have alight on at night. As far asAuburn goes, it seems likecyclists and motorists fol-low the rules of the roadpretty well.
