Our fall itinerary showcases the best

    of Newfoundland: stunning autumnal

    scenery, natural wonders, kitchen

parties in out-ports and Viking,Basque and settler history. The

    warmth, hospitality and beauty of

    Newfoundlands shores draw us year

    after year.

Setting out from historic St. Johns we

sail to Fogo Island, considered one of

the four corners of Earth. At historic

Battle Harbour we visit the beautifullyrestored shing capital of Labrador.

From here we call in at LAnse aux

    Meadows, the only authenticated

Viking site in North America. At Red

Bay, on Labradors south coast, well

    explore an ancient Basque whaling

    station, where 16th century whaling

    galleons and chalupas haunt the

    waters.

Next is the natural history of Gros

Morne National Park. The park is

    dened by Precambrian clis, deep

    inland fjords and volcanic pillow

rocks that formed as lava cooled

    underwater. Here the ancient ocean

bed lies on top of high hills, helping to

    establish the Tectonic plate theory.

A highlight for many is calling in at

the small outports and wild bays of

    Newfoundlands south coast. Before

    disembarking at St. Johns well

visit Miquelon, the sole remnant of

    Frances once vast North American

    possessions.

    Day 1: St. Johns, Newfoundland

We meet in St. Johns, Newfoundlands

    historic, vibrant capital. Picturesque and

    welcoming, it has been continuously

shed since 1498, allowing it to boast the

    designation of North Americas oldest

European settlement. We will join the

    Sea Adventurer here.

    Day 2: Fogo Island

    Located 15km o Newfoundlands

    northeast coast, Fogo Island was

originally named fuego or re by

the Portuguese, after res set by

    early shermen were seen burning

on the island. A lucrative crab shery

has since replaced the salmon andcod sheries that once supported the

outport communities of the island. Fogo

Island supports 11 communities, and a

landmark proclaimed by the Flat Earth

Society as one of the four corners of

the Earth. We spend time experiencing

island life in Fogo Town before heading

    further north.

    Day 3: Battle Harbour

Battle Harbour was the scal and social

centre of SE Labrador for two centuries.

    The decline and eventual collapse

of the shery thrust the island into a

state of disarray. Today the glory of

the island has been revived. Well stroll

    among the beautifully restored buildings

learning about the key role of the island

in the economic and social sphere of

    Newfoundland & Labrador.

    Day 4: LAnse aux Meadows

    and Red Bay

We call in this morning at one of the

    worlds most important archaeological

    sites, North Americas only authenticated

    Viking settlement, LAnse aux Meadows.

In the afternoon we stop at Red Bay, the

shing village and former site of several

    Basque whaling stations, occupied

between 1550 and the early 1600s whenthey hunted right and bowhead whales.

Day 5: Gros Morne National Park

It has been said, Gros Morne is to

geology what the Galapagos are to

    biology. Spectacular scenery including

    Precambrian clis, deep inland fjords

and volcanic pillow rocks formed as

lava cooled underwater- is just one ofthe reasons we stop here year after

year. Highlights on this day include time

spent exploring the Tablelands, a 600m

(1900 ft) high plateau that forms one of

the worlds best examples of ancient

rock exposed from the earths interior,

and exploring the fjord by ship.

Day 6-7: South Coast - Garria Bay,

    Francois

The last of the true outport communities

are found here, and we will visit two

of them. First, we visit the tiny village

    of Francois. Dramatic rock strewn

clis surround the village, a delicate

waterfall runs through the centre of

town and there is a short hike to a

    picturesque pond overlooking the

community. Tonight we are treated to

music by the local band at an authentic

    Newfoundland Kitchen Party.

Day 8: Arran Cove and Conne

    River / Miawpukek

A visit to Miawpukek (Conne River)

will reveal a First Nations community

that has the mandate of turning the

    community into an economically

    self-sucient community guided by

    traditional values. Miawpukek became

a permanent community sometimearound 1822. Before 1822 it was one of

    many semi-permanent camping sites

used by the Mikmaw people who were

at the time still nomadic and travelling

    throughout the east coast.

    Day 9: Miquelon, France

On the northern side of the larger island,

the village of Miquelon is inhabited by 600

people, mostly of Basque and Acadianancestry. Wildlife is most abundant on this

island and its couterpart to the south, the

island of Langlade. The 8 mile sand dune

between the two islands is peppered with

    over 500 shipwrecks.

    Day 10: St. Johns, Newfoundland

Discover one of the oldest cities in North

America, a city unlike any other. Cradled

in a harbour carved from 500 million year

old rock and surrounded by hills running

down to the ocean, St. Johns is the mosteasterly point in North America. St. Johns

has been vitally important for centuries

    to explorers, adventurers, merchants,

soldiers, pirates, and all manner of

seafarers, who provided the foundation for

    this thriving modern day city.

    THE SMALL SHIP CRUISINGDIFFERENCE

Adventure Canada is celebrating 25years of adventure, taking our treasured

adventurers to the best of the natural

world using the comfort of small ships

    specically designed for expedition

travel to faraway places. Here are

some reasons why we love small ship

    expedition cruising so much:

    1) Up-Close Encounters: Because of theirsmall turning radius and maneuverability,

small ships can access narrow rivers,

secluded coves and navigate through ice

and remote places inaccessible to bigger

ships. Its in these areas where nature

and culture are at their best.

    2) Small Groups: With small shipscome small groups, fast transfers to

and from shore, and only the best seats

in the house! This means more time to

experience the destination. It also means

exible itineraries and being able to

launch a Zodiac in minutes if something

interesting is spotted, or to stay longer

admiring a pod of whales, for example.

    3) Like-Minded Travelling Companions:

    Of course everyone has dierent

reasons for travelling. However over the

years weve found one common element

among our guests: a thirst for knowledge

and authentic experience. Many of our

    guests form life-long friendships (and

even some marriages), and our tripsare often the site of reunions for people

    from all over the world.

    4) On-Board Experience: In addition

to a full on-board presentation and

    entertainment schedule, we oer a

    combination of lively shipboard activities.

Our guests choose what elements of

the program they want to participate in(or not) and we always provide several

    options.

    SEA ADVENTURER 7

    Dining Room Library

    5) Authenticity: Forget casinos, multiple

bars and formal dinners. Small ship

    cruising is about experiencing the

destination up-close with the help ofexperienced naturalists, historians,

    photographers and expedition leaders.

    And with Adventure Canada, theres

always a strong emphasis on fun!

    SEA ADVENTURER:

    HOME AWAY FROM HOME

    Adventure Canada has been sailing

    aboard the Sea Adventurerfor four

seasons now, and each summer when

we rst step on the gangway, its like

    coming home. Were welcomed by

the ship crews friendly and familiar

    facesthe seamen helping board

the Zodiacs, the friendly hotel sta

who greet us each morning and ofcourse our wonderful Captain. With

every expedition we take, a tight-knit

    shipboard community is formed among

the maximum 200 guests and crew.

    The relaxed, casual feeling on-board,

coupled with open meal seating plans,

ample deck space and the open bridge

    policy breeds a strong camaraderie

not only between the passengers andsta, but with the ships crew as well.

This type of travel will change your

    perspective and form many long-lasting

    friendships.

    LIFE ON-BOARD

    Travelling with Adventure Canada is

unlike any other travel experience. Ouronboard programming makes us unique,

and keeps our guests coming back!

    Our expeditions are educational with

    knowledgeable sta and engaging

    presentations. But were equally proud

of our fun events such as our trivia

    nights, evening concerts, sing-a-longs,

theme dinners and dances! We stronglybelieve having fun is contagious.

Our resource sta members are expert

in their respective elds, but we value

their people skills just as highly; theyre

  • 7/30/2019 Adventure Canada 2013 Newfoundland Circumnavigation

    14/19

    8

    all engaging, approachable and fun

    loving.

On average we hold three to four

presentations a day in addition to ourplanned excursions. Professional sta

members host a variety of workshops,

    from photography seminars to print

    making to Inuktitut lessons.

Our close relationships with local people

in the regions we visit have a powerful

eect on our passengers. We travel

with local Inuit guides when in the Arctic,Ecuadorians when in Galapagos and

    Newfoundlanders when on the Rock.

We are grateful to work alongside so

many talented individuals and have them

invite us into their home territory. The

interaction doesnt end with our onboard

    guides; we also invite community

members onboard the ship to give us

an introduction to their home and enjoytime with us.

In 2013 we will be aboard the Sea

    Adventurer, a wonderful ship designed

    for passenger comfort. The hardworking

    crew greatly enriches our onboard

experience. From the Captain and his

ocers, to the engine team, to the

stewards who service your cabin, ourcrew understand expedition travel, and

give their all to make your adventure

    perfect.

    ACTIVITY LEVEL

Adventure Canada expeditions are intended for people in

reasonably good health. Zodiac cruises and transfer timescan be lengthy. There are no elevators on board ship, andyou must be able to climb stairs between decks. You mustalso be able to climb the external gangway stairs to transferbetween the ship and the zodiacs. Our guides and ship creware available to assist you in and out of the Zodiacs, both onshore and at the gangway. Adventure Canada expeditionsmay involve extensive walking in variable weather oversometimes hilly, uneven terrain. Wherever possible onshore excursions, we break into smaller, guided groupsaccording to interest and physical ability. This may meanone small group going off on a strenuous, two hour hike onsteep terrain, while another explores the area in and around

the landing beach, keeping to relatively level terrain andshort distances. Generally speaking, once a few people areready to return to the ship, the Zodiacs are usually availableto take you back at the time of your choosing.

    ZODIAC CRAFT

Zodiacs are the favoured means of transportation inthe Arctic for all our expeditions and, indeed, wherever

shallow waters and beaches ring the shoreline. Theyare stable, versatile craft which cruise at an approximatespeed of four knots, and in windy weather can make forrather splashy rides. We therefore recommend wearingwet weather gear for Zodiac transfers. Life preserversare absolutely compulsory. Zodiac landings will generallyentail disembarking onto rocky or gravelly beaches. Thebeach landings may be wet, meaning that there may besome spray en route to shore, and that you may have tostep into water up to 25 cm/10 inches deep. Rubber bootsare highly recommended.

    MEDICAL FACILITIES

This expedition is intended for persons in good health.Passengers who are not t for long trips for any reason, including disability, heart or other health conditions, are

advised not to join the tour. Should any such conditionbecome apparent, we reserve the right to declineembarkation. Our vessel is not equipped to handle seriousmedical conditions. Medical and Emergency Evacuationinsurance is mandatory and may be purchased through

Adventure Canada at the time of booking. All passengersmust carry a minimum of $75,000 USD per personemergency medical and evacuation coverage. This maynot cover the full cost of a medical emergency. Additionalexpenses are the full responsibility of the passenger

A ships doctor will be in attendance in the ships smallmedical clinic on most cruises to administer to passengers

basic health needs. If you require specic medications, please ensure that you bring a supply adequate to lastyou for the duration of the journey. Any applicable fee formedical services rendered or medicines supplied will bedebited from your account.

    GRATUITIES

Our staff try hard to please and tips are heartily appreciated. In fairness to all of those who work together to make yourcruise enjoyable, tips are collected at the end of the voyageand distributed equitably among the crew. Although we leavetip amounts to your discretion, in the past many passengershave asked for a recommended amount. We suggest a rate

of $15USD per day, per passenger, as a kind and generousoffering. Tips will be automatically added to your shipboardaccount, you may advise the purser onboard of you wouldlike to increase or decrease the tip amount.
