The Quest community wanted product-focused content, so we listened and delivered.

We hope that 2013 is treating you all well, bringing prosperity and success to all! We also hope Quest can help you meet your business goals this year. 2012 was a great year for the Quest community. Not only was COLLABORATE one of our best and highest attended conferences to date, we also launched two new conferences, PeopleSoft RECONNECT and JD Edwards INFOCUS. These micro-level, deep-dive events were in direct response to feedback we received from you, our members. The Quest community wanted product-focused content, so we listened and delivered. Read more about these annual events on page 6, and be sure to make plans to attend or send someone from your staff to the 2013 events as well. Other notable moments for Quest in 2012 were the release of the first-ever Quest written and produced whitepaper, which focuses on the trends and takeaways from the CIO Forum 2012, The Shape of Things to Come. Read the paper on page 8.

Your Quest headquarters also continued to learn about Fusion and what it means for you and your business. Following up on one of our most-read stories of 2011 was this opinion piece that also proved to be one of our most-read pieces of content for the year. You might have also noticed some changes to QuestDirect.org, namely the launch of brand-new Info Centers, one each focusing on HCM, Financials, Tools & Tech, Upgrades, and one for C-level content. Check back often as these hubs of information are monitored and updated regularly to keep fresh, timely content at your fingertips around the topics that interest you most.

This is of course just a sampling of all the great things Quest headquarters did for you, our members, throughout the last year. Look for us to build on these successes in 2013, all with the end goal of helping you strengthen and grow your business through IT. 6 Q&A – Buyer’s Guide issue

Have you heard the news? Brand-new for 2012, Quest is offering two deep-dive, product-focused events: Peoplesoft reCONNeCT and Jd edwards iNFOCus. Our members asked for this nuts-and-bolts, product-specific content, and we’re delivering.

These new product-focused events replace Quest’s regional events and offer in-depth education into PeopleSoft and JD Edwards EnterpriseOne product modules in a way that isn’t possible at COLLABORATE. PeopleSoft RECONNECT

will include granular content within PeopleSoft HCM (benefits, payroll, etc.), financials (accounts payable, accounts receivable, cost accounting, fixed assets, general ledger, etc.), distribution and manufacturing, supply chain (demand management, inventory, order management, transportation management, etc.) and PeopleTools modules. JD Edwards INFOCUS will offer tracks on JD Edwards EnterpriseOne HCM (payroll, time and labor, manager self service, etc.), financials (accounts payable, accounts receivable, cost accounting, fixed assets, general ledger, etc.), real estate and home construction, and supply chain (demand management, inventory, order management, transportation management, etc.) modules. These two events will also incorporate enhancement discussions

with Oracle development and support and SIG meetings around the featured product modules. Prices start at $495 for customer members. Who should attend? PeopleSoft and JD Edwards customers who make decisions for their companies, whether as a line-manager or C-level, should attend COLLABORATE for the high-level education, announcements and networking opportunities. The end users of PeopleSoft and JD Edwards modules (those who use the products on a daily or near-daily basis) who are looking for focused education should attend PeopleSoft RECONNECT or JD Edwards INFOCUS. Education will dig into enhancements, techniques and tips for your specific tower modules. New Quest Board of Directors member Rich Harvey said RECONNECT is one thing he wants to focus on during his tenure as a board member. “I want to build the value of the RECONNECT conference and to build that deep-dive functionality,” he said. He sees the “nuts and bolts” approach at RECONNECT as the perfect complement to COLLABORATE’s “50,000-foot view. You can’t get that [deep-dive] at COLLABORATE; it’s an entirely different value proposition.” Plus, Harvey added, “it’s the first event in years that’s only PeopleSoft.”

COLLABORATE, of course, remains the place for big Oracle announcements and industry news – the only global conference focusing on the Oracle ecosystem at the macro level. This is your exclusive event for sessions on Fusion, JD Edwards World, new product releases and strategies from Oracle and the partner community

with an emphasis on professional development and executive content. COLLABORATE offers something for everyone through the unique blend of networking and education sessions offered by Quest, IOUG and OAUG. Quest will continue to host the annual CIO Forum at this conference as well. COLLABORATE and the new product-focused events are complementary, so if you fall into both categories (decision-maker and end-user), Quest recommends attending both to ensure that you receive the full spectrum of available education.

PeopleSoft RECONNECT is right around the corner. Need help convincing your boss that you absolutely have to be there? Here are a few suggestions that may help you make the case to attend PeopleSoft RECONNECT.

You are an asset to your company. All assets require maintenance and enhancements. If instead of being a person, you were a piece of machinery, part of the corporate budget would go towards maintaining and upgrading you. You are an asset to the company. They should be investing the same percentage of budget towards maintaining and upgrading your skills as they do for the rest of the corporate assets.

Offer to train others in what you learned when you return. You can pitch your trip to a conference as a way to bring back skills and knowledge to the rest of the organization. If you have any experience in training or

teaching, you can use that as your justification to attend instead of other co-workers. Get extra copies of the tutorial notes from other sessions. Trip report. Arguably one form of teaching others, the trip report is a write up of the sessions you attended, written for other folks in your group. The best trip reports make it easy for folks to dig up the right reference, or trigger people to come ask you questions. There’s rarely much value in 10 page trip report documents: no one reads them. Instead, a 2 or 3 page summary, with URLs and pointers to stuff for specific questions gets much more mileage.

Connect the value of the conference to business goals. If ease of use or customer satisfaction are company or division goals, sending folks to conferences on those subjects will help pull in more expertise and knowledge towards helping the business. This argument puts less of the focus on your professional goals, and more on the company.

Recruiting. One of the reasons to send people to conferences is to recruit for open positions. If your team has had trouble filling certain jobs, or know that new openings are coming for your group, you can offer to do recruiting work while you’re there. PeopleSoft RECONNECT’s networking opportunities are unbeatable; you are attending sessions broken down into the specific modules you use and therefore are surrounded by qualified individuals.

8 Q&A – Buyer’s Guide issue

Finding qualified staff, integrating iT into the overall business and creating a transition plan to next-generation erP were among the most-discussed themes at Quest international users Group’s 2012 CiO Forum, a QLC event. More than 100 attendees spent the day discussing challenges with their current erP solutions and looking forward to what’s coming and how to get there.

“The business” versus IT

Attendees talked about the prevailing assumption that IT is a separate – and often competing – entity from the overall business, and their frustrations with this assumption. IT is part of the business, they agreed, but IT professionals are as guilty as others in perpetuating this fallacy. “We have to stop thinking of ourselves as outside the business,” one attendee said. “What can

we do differently? Communicate better who we are as IT pros?” Discussion also centered around a perceived competition between IT and “the business.”

Even CIO Forum keynote speaker R “Ray” Wang addressed the perception that the business and IT are at odds. “What’s happening now, “Wang said, “is that if IT wins, business dies. The business side has control of the budget and they’re spending like mad, and you can see it.”

Wang further broke down business needs versus IT requirements into six components:

•Businessneeds:Simple,ScalableandSexy(asin,“We need an app that shines, so people will say ‘that looks awesome!’”).

•ITrequirements:Safe,Secure(“Noonewantstobeon the front page of the WSJ for a data breach”), Sustainable.

More than 100 attendees gathered at the 2012 CIO Forum to discuss the future of ERP.

CIO FOrum 2012: tRends and takeawaysBy Rebekah Sellers

Q&A – Buyer’s Guide issue 9

“But,” he said, “you have to do all six to be successful in the business,” seeming to indicate the need for integration as well.

This discussion led to further talk of what IT professionals are and do within the business. The conclusion: IT pros are facilitators of the business investment to return the benefit back to the company. All agreed that “the business” and “IT” must reach a mutual understanding.

Staffing: Evolving to the next level through incremental transitions

Although funding and finding a way to show a clear business incentive to move to a next-generation ERP were top-of-mind for most attendees, others wondered if staffing issues might be what finally forces the jump to a new system. With universities not teaching JD Edwards and PeopleSoft these days, many CIOs are seeing an aging workforce and younger hires not showing interest in JD Edwards or PeopleSoft. “I’m not hiring people at 25, 26 years old and teaching them JDE. Is that the way we’re going to get forced into next-generation ERP?” wondered one attendee. Another queried, “When people start retiring, howdo you replace not just the technical knowledge, but the business processes? ERP needs to be more attractive to younger workers, and how do we fund getting there?”

CIO Forum attendees broke into discussion groups during the day to talk about issues they face with their ERPs, and what the future of ERP looks likes.

Attendees then addressed the question of, “What do we want to see our vendors do for us?” Many seemed to agree that an all-or-nothing approach does not suit them. “Give us a menu to pick what we need instead of having to swallow the whole thing,” suggested one. “Give me some choice instead of shoving it down my throat and locking me in.”

One CIO noted that “vendor sales reps don’t get paid unless we change (i.e., upgrade). They’re pushing change for the sake of change. You have to be really strategic as a CIO to differentiate between what’s necessary and what we’re just doing. And we have to tell the CEO what we’re doing.”

Several attendees voiced frustrations around vendor sales reps. “We need to have more dialog with

vendors, and have vendors deal with us in larger groups,” one suggested. Another said his account manager changes so often he loses track of who it is. One attendee said his changed so often he wrote up a few paragraphs about the business to hand to each new account rep to avoid having the same conversation over and over.

Attendees agreed that they would like to see more two-way communication with vendors and account reps. Instead of a rep who just wants to “sell, sell, sell,” how about one who can answer questions and has more of a vested interest in the client?

The afternoon saw the lively discussion continue, with talk starting where some of the morning’s dialog left off.

Q&A – Buyer’s Guide issue 11

Where does ERP need to go? Start with the issues:

•Simplercontracting•Integration•Testing•Staffing

JD Edwards is clunky, one attendee said. “We need a more configurable workflow.” Another CIO noted that the fundamental architecture of JDE is 35 years old, and that “trying to program for every possible contingency creates clunky.”

Although the current state of ERP does have its issues, attendees still showed loyalty to their respective products. “We bought from individual companies (PeopleSoft or JD Edwards before Oracle) for a reason,” one said. “There’s no incentive to build a next generation ERP. Plus, how do you fund the leap to go to a new ERP when you’re so invested in what you currently have?”

Prior to the lively conversations of the structured ERP discussion, the event kicked off with the keynote address from Ray Wang, principal analyst and CEO of Constellation Research.

Five consumer trends will dominate the shift from engagement to experience, Wang said: mobile, social, cloud, information graphics/big data, and video and unified communications. “This change is happening and it’s happening pretty quickly,” he said. Wang also talked about the four personas of the next-generation CIO:

•ChiefIntegrationOfficer•ChiefInnovationOfficer•ChiefInfrastructureOfficer•ChiefIntelligenceOfficer When we all have the same data, how do we get different results? It’s about data integrity, Wang said.

“One CIO can deliver all four roles by upgrading their skill sets,” Wang said, but CIOs must also grapple with complying versus innovating, and growing versus saving, the top priorities that tear CIOs in disparate directions, Wang said.

Three forces that drive changing dynamics in ERP:

•Costofownership•Agingandbrittleinfrastructure•Increasingcomplexity

“The product is an excuse to sell service,” Wang said. “Be smart about upgrades.”

Attendees were challenged with three goals to focus on:

•Navigatingdisruptivetechnology•Designingnext-generationbusinessmodels•Payingforinnovation

Wang left everyone with five simple steps to success:

•Beginwiththeendinmind•Costoptimizationtopayforinnovation•Applydesignthinkingtore-evaluate business models•Determinewhichdisruptivetechnologytoadoptand

which not to•Failfastandkeepexperimenting

20 Q&A – Buyer’s Guide issue

When Oracle bought Peoplesoft and in the process acquired Jd edwards, those customers were worried. Would Oracle kill their products, the applications they the customers had assessed and purchased as the right solution for their organizations?

At first it looked like their fears may have had foundation when Oracle announced Fusion Applications and said all Oracle Application families would move by 2013. Then came the user driven turnaround and Oracle announced Applications Unlimited. No need to move to Fusion Applications and continuous enhancements in the existing products.

Great news for Quest members: You can stay on your products and they will continue to get better – so why am I talking to you about Fusion Applications?

Oracle developed Fusion Applications for many reasons; these are some of the ones that resonate with me:

ChangeOur organisations are changing and existing apps are not as agile for change. We need to be able to change processes quickly to manage mergers and acquisitions, changes in how we do business because of legislative, economic or innovative change. Changes are business driven and in Fusion Applications are business implemented.

Enterprise ITEvery organisation has more than one application and we are moving away from maintaining them as silos. Fusion middleware helps bring them all together, a single platform for orchestrating processes, reporting on data, delivering to the user and securing your organisation and additionally with one development framework. Fusion Applications are completely written in Fusion Middleware.

How We WorkPeople work differently. We use technology intuitively to support our lives through the internet, and expect to do the same in our organisations. The user experience in Fusion Applications is fantastic, and the reason why it is so good is because Oracle watched and listened

to users, and then had them validate their findings at every step of the development of Fusion Applications.

To me, Fusion Applications can be summed up as everything you need to do, and everything you need to know, available all the time, in one place. We do today what we need for our organisations but we do a lot of it outside our ERP applications – range of tools help us carry out what is needed. In Fusion

Applications it is, simply, just simpler and intuitive. The applications are written, tested by users and available, but again I ask, why should you be interested?

UpgradesIf you are thinking of an upgrade, Fusion may now be an alternative. Depending on your applications footprint and how difficult your upgrade may be, it may now have the functionality and ROI you need. Especially if you have already started your Fusion Middleware journey this is a real option. I know organisations that are just finishing a major upgrade who wish Fusion applications had been available when they started planning.

Co-existenceIn an ideal world (and if you were commissioning systems for the first time) I am confident you would want Fusion Applications. However, there are few new organisations looking at a new full ERP system, and most of us are unable to simply start again. But Fusion Applications do not need you to throw away your investment, go back to my point about the middleware. You can use this platform today with your current applications, bring your organisation into a single managed IT estate, and the same principle enables you to take parts of Fusion Applications that make sense to you and in the same way integrate them. This co-existence option is the most popular way of taking up Fusion Applications.

If you have already adopted or plan to adopt the technology across your estate then look at what Fusion Applications could add to your organization – it will fit in easily.

If you have no plans for Fusion Middleware, I would ask “why?” but that is a conversation for another time. You should still be looking at Fusion Applications and perhaps the option of having it delivered as a cloud offering would work for you, letting Oracle or a partner host that technology for you.

Still not Sure?Fusion Applications are not right for everyone. Even if you love them, they may not be ready for you yet, but don’t let that put you off looking at them. Fusion Applications are what Oracle believes are the next generation of applications and their strategy. Your existing applications will continue to be developed, a strategy that includes using more of the Fusion technology. Many users are seeing things in Fusion Applications which they would like today, but the applications themselves are not right for them. I am seeing lots of examples where they are now developing that user experience themselves with Fusion Middleware.

But a Word of Caution...This column limits how much I can write and so I hope I have made you think – and more importantly, made you want to look at Fusion Applications. I am an evangelist for these applications, but please do your homework, use your usergroup and talk to more than one source. I have heard stories of misinformation and perhaps wrong steers, sometimes deliberate but normally well intentioned. Fusion Applications are new. Oracle has the information, but you need the independence of other users and partners to balance the story. Get your existing or potential partner to work with Oracle and talk to you together.

And remember: Talk to other adopters of Fusion Applications and developers of Fusion Middleware; your user group is the ideal place to meet these.
