It starts underground. No one can see it happening, but beneath a layerof dirt a dramatic transformation takes place. As snowflakes turn into
raindrops, a single stem silently emerges from the soil and is exposed intothe sun. What began as a humble tulip bulb becomes a visual masterpieceas its petals open and expose themselves to the warmth of spring.
Sixty-five years ago, this simple tulip made an impression upon the citizensof Albany who have since celebrated the flower’s arrival each spring. TulipFest has emerged into one of the area’s most popular spring attractions asmore than 100,000 tulips bloom in Albany’s historic Washington Park to a

crowd of cameras, the strumming of strings, and the fragranceof fresh lemonade and fried dough. It’s a sensory experience thatmay sound overwhelming, but like the many tulips that standside by side for acres, when all together, blend into a beautifuland harmonious celebration of springtime.
It was Mayor Erastus Corning’s request to Queen Wilhelminaof the Netherlands in 1948 that began this citywide tradition. Inresponse to his appeal for an official variety of tulip to be namedfor Albany, she wrote: “Her Majesty gladly accepts the invitation
to designate a tulip as the official flower of Albany.” The OrangeWonder was chosen, fitting with the colors of our city flag:orange, white, and blue. Following this royal transatlantic cable, the tulip (now Tulip) became the official flower of Albany asdeclared by a city ordinance.
As with anything Albany, the festival is deeply rooted in our
heritage. Each year begins with the Scrubbing of State Street,in which students clad in Hollanders attire (don’t forget thewooden clogs) follow the Dutch tradition of washing the streetsin preparation of a celebration. Saturday marks the coronationof the Tulip Queen and her Court, as they begin their year-long
positions as community ambassadors to the City. The followingday, Mother’s Day, is when one deserving mom will be namedMother of the Year.
With the help of many volunteers, city workers, and a dedicatedcommunity, Tulip Fest has grown into the showpiece of Albany’sannual events scene, much like the unassuming tulip bulbbecomes a powerful and peaceful reminder of Albany’s history, beauty, and bright future. •

When you step intoJack’s Oyster House
from State Street you
will feel time shift as youstand on the bridge between
Albany’s storied history andbustling present. The dining
room is adorned with handsomewoodwork, black and white tiles,
large photos of old Albany, anddeep private booths that are perfect
for important conversation. Jack’s
is the kind of place where thingshappen: deals are made, legislation
is negotiated, elbows are rubbed, andprobably more than a few romances
are ignited. There’s a good chance you’ll
see one (or many) of New York State’spoliticians seated across Jack’s dining
room, down from the Capitol for dinnerwith colleagues.
Jack Rosenstein opened the original Jack’sOyster House in 1913. According to an article
by William Kennedy in a 1985 issue of Esquire ,Jack didn’t like oysters, but nonetheless as a
young boy he became one of the best oystershuckers in Albany. That skill started him down
the path that carried him through Albany’s greatrestaurants, and into ownership of his own Oyster
House. Stories about Jack always mention the thing
that defined him and still defines the restaurant hefounded: he did things right.
Since 1913, the Rosenstein family has operated Jack’s:the original restaurant was opened by Jack himself, and
is now run by his grandson, Brad. It is clear from the preparationof the food, the attention to detail, and the recent seamlessadditions to the space that the restaurant is treated as a belovedmember of the family - and so are Jack’s patrons.
From the moment you enter Jack’s Oyster House and are
greeted warmly (often by Brad himself), you will feel like royalty.
The feeling is mutual: generations of Albany residents haveconsidered Jack’s a member of their family: a place to returnagain and again, where milestones were celebrated and mealssavored.
The food at Jack’s, of course, is as outstanding as the service. Each component of each meal is prepared with care: fresh, unique, and delicious. Whether you choose one of Jack’ssignature oyster dishes, filet mignon, or crab cakes, your meal at Jack’s will be memorable and likely to inspire you to plan yournext visit even before you leave.
As Jack’s celebrates its 100th anniversary this year, the tradition
of above-and-beyond service continues, along with its custom of serving seven-days a week, all year long. It has closed for just oneday: in 1987, the day of Jack Rosenstein’s funeral.
Settle into a booth at Jack’s. Order a martini. Leave your phonein your pocket, and imagine you’re in another, slower, time. Takepleasure in each heavenly bite of your meal. Have a civil politicaldebate with your dining partner. Sip your beverage. Celebrate.Notice the lighting and the silverware. For just a few hours, let
Jack’s take you back in time. •

There are just a few basic ingredients necessary for the quintessentialsummer evening in Albany:• A worn blanket (best if it smells like sunblock or campfire)• A picnic basket of sandwiches from Debbie’s Kitchen, burritos from
Bomber’s, or cookies and cakes from Crisan.• A spot on the lawn looking down on the Park Playhouse stage in
Washington Park while the area’s top actors and actresses belt outshow tunes from beloved musicals, their voices echoing across thepond, over Lark Street, and across the Empire State Plaza.
• If possible, a glowing sunset followed by a clear starry sky.
Evenings like this make up 25 years of summer memories for Albany residentsand visitors. Many grew up watching musicals in the park, where a love of showtunes or singing or lighting design was sparked. Some seized a rare opportunityto see live theater, returning night after night to watch the stage from differentangles, noticing something new every time.
In the summer of 2013, Park Playhouse celebrates 25 years of providing freeentertainment for residents and visitors in Albany. This world class theater and
the opportunities it affords its cast, crew, and audience are a treasure to the city.
Owen Smith is Park Playhouse’s Producing Artistic Director and is the mainforce behind its continued success. Park Playhouse’s tradition of high qualityfree theater is a testament to Owen’s dedication, the City of Albany, andsupporters of Park Playhouse. For many in the audience each summer, there
are few opportunities to experience live theater, let alone live theater featuringActors Equity performers, a live orchestra, beautiful sets, and the area’s bestperformers.
Live theater has its own kind of magic. The sets, the lights, the costumes, andthe story bring alive a different time and place. Coupled with sunsets and starrysummer nights, the magic is amplified as the audience is transported out of Washington Park into the streets of New York City, 1960s Baltimore, a Germancabaret, or the Land of Oz.
Park Playhouse also bring’s the city’s youth into the magic of theater throughPark Playhouse II. Shows put on by this arm of the company are done by a castand crew who are all under the age of 18. This talented group presents theater
that is no less spectacular, with an energy and excitement that radiates throughthe park.
Every summer for the past 25 years, audiences have come to Washington Parkwith their blankets and picnic dinners, ready to take in live theater that is among
the region’s best. Many audience members walk over from their homes in thecity, others come from many miles around for an evening of showstoppersnestled among the beautiful trees and hills of Albany’s oldest park.
This summer, join the tradition. Find the perfect spot on the lawn (arrive early!)and relax as the sun sets and the orchestra swells to signal the opening of another grand Park Playhouse show. •

ARTS
Given Albany’s convenient location to major surrounding cities such as New
York City, Boston, and Montreal, as well as numerous settings and streets that
mimic Manhattan, Washington, D.C., and even parts of Europe, it’s no wonder that
many filmmakers are drawn to our Capital City.
The Albany Film Commission remains very active scouting locations throughout
the Capital Region for film production companies who frequently express an
interest in filming in this area. Albany has proven itself as an ideal location due
to its eclectic architecture and neighborhoods, outstanding service, and the
excitement of the locals each and every time a movie is filmed here.

The Albany Institute of History and Art is one of nation’s oldest museums andas much a part of our city’s fabric as the New York State Capitol Building itself.
“The Institute”, as it’s so fondly called by locals, has entertained generations of tourists for over 200 years. It contains a treasure trove of artifacts highlightinghistorical and artistic contributions of the Upper Hudson Valley, including oneof the largest collections of Hudson River School paintings in the country.
School children, artists, and the naturally curious have flocked to The Institute tosurround themselves in the museum’s significant New York State collection, only tofind themselves in a small, solemn, dimly lit room that commands respect. Withinthis room are The Institute’s Egyptian Mummies. How does a museum, dedicatedto the preservation of Hudson Valley cultural contributions, end up with Mummies
from Egypt as part of their extensive collection?
The mummies were welcomed to Albany, NY over 100 years ago – a drop in theproverbial bucket for 2,000 year old mummies. Institute board member, Samuel
W. Brown, traveled to Cairo, Egypt in 1909 and returned with two mummies. One
mummy was fully wrapped in linen, as is traditionally pictured. The other mummywas partially exposed, with a preserved face visible to onlookers. In the 19th andearly 20th century, ancient Egypt captured our imaginations. Thousands of books, artifacts and even fashion were heavily influenced at this time by Ancient Egypt. It
seemed only natural that Brown would want to include these historical wonders inThe Institute as a means to draw the curious into the museum. However, technologywas limited and there was little that could be gleaned as to the identities of theseancient marvels. Who were these mysterious figures from across the sea? Weretheir daily lives anything like ours? Their story was left to mystery and imagination.
However, limited though we were, our curiosity had yet to diminish. Eventually, technology caught up with our inquisitive nature and the world came closer tounderstanding the mummies. In 1988, the mummies were sent to Albany Medical
Center, where the preliminary scans shed some light on their identities.
The first mummy – the mummy with his face exposed – is believed to have died in966 BCE and was between 55-66 years of age when he passed away. His companionis supposed to have been between 35-45 years old at the time of his passing. This
mummy is significant to archeologists and historians because the X-Rays revealeda ceramic toe on the foot. Egyptians believed humans needed to be fully “intact”before proceeding to the afterlife and it is assumed the toe was added during themummification process. The discovery was featured on The Learning Channel’s
The Ancient ER in 2003.
We continue to want to know more about our ancient brethren. The mummies haveonce again been sent to the Albany Medical Center in preparation for this year’snew exhibit, GE Presents the Mystery of the Albany Mummies (pg. 7) . With updated
imaging equipment and a host of radiologists and Egyptian scholars, we willcontinue to learn more about The Institute’s Mummies and, undoubtedly, continueto find more of ourselves in their stories. •

This year marks the Bicentennial Celebration of The Albany Academies’ two schools.
The Albany Academy was chartered in 1813, and Albany Academy for Girls—originally named Albany Female Academy—was chartered in 1814, the first girls dayschool in the nation.
The Old Albany Academy building, a masterpiece by architect Phillip Hooker, still stands
in Academy Park at the eastern end of Washington Avenue, across from the Capitol of New York State. Albany Academy for Girls has had five different sites over the centuries, only the last of which still stands. An early and stately Greek Revival building, on PearlStreet until 1892, is still revered in the school’s song for its “classic columns.” Bothschools are now located on Academy Road, across the street from each other. The
Albany Academy’s building was built in 1931 and Albany Academy for Girls in 1959.The two schools merged in 2007.
Over their two centuries, many illustrious graduates have provided leadership to the
United States: Herman Melville, author of “the great American novel,” Moby Dick ; JaneLathrop Stanford, founder and savior of Stanford University; Joseph Henry, renownedscientist and first Director of the Smithsonian Institution; Dr. Martin E. P. Seligman, oneof America’s foremost psychologists; and many others. A recent Academy graduate,Alydaar Rangwala, one of forty Intel® Science Talent Search® winners in the nation, isnow attending Harvard and follows in this long line of excellence.
The Bicentennial Celebration begins on March 4, 2013 with the renovation of the clocktower atop The Albany Academy, known for its ancient Fish and Pumpkin. The clock, one of the finest ever crafted in the United States, will ring again and tell the hours forthe first time in many years. The Bicentennial will conclude in June, 2014 when AlbanyAcademy for Girls holds its commencement.
Today, in their third century, The Albany Academies stand at the forefront of educationin the Capital Region with students attending from Cobleskill to Chatham, from Saratogato Saugerties. The strength of our foundation is the inspiration for the future. •

of volunteers descend upon Albany’s historic Washington Park to begininstalling more than 125 light displays in preparation for Capital Holiday Lights inthe Park. From Thanksgiving through the first week of each New Year, these lightscreate a festive winter wonderland in the heart of the city, while the Washington
Park Lake House is transformed into Santa’s Workshop, complete with handcraftedgifts, refreshments, and sometimes even a visit from Santa and his reindeer! Thisevent benefits the juvenile crime prevention programs of the Albany Police AthleticLeague (PAL) so be sure not to miss an opportunity to spread some holiday cheerwhile helping a worthy local cause. •
