Dear Hawk Fans,

As I reflect on the past 12 months, I can truly say that 2013-14was a year unlike any other in the 105-year history of SaintJoseph’s athletics. The accomplishments of our student-athleteswere remarkable. Following the lead of our seniors, this groupmaximized its experience, embraced our Jesuit mission and accepted the challenge to become Everyday Champions.

In terms of success, this year’s teams won nearly 60 percent oftheir contests, posting the highest cumulative winning percentagesince 1982. Highlights included baseball and men’s and women’s tennis each setting newschool records for wins, while men’s basketball captured the Atlantic 10 Championshipand earned a trip to the NCAA Tournament, women’s basketball returned to the BigDance and men’s lacrosse won the Northeast Conference regular season title.

Individually, our student-athletes and coaches won numerous awards, not only for theirperformance on the field, but their effort in the classroom and the community. This recognition speaks not only to their physical talent, but their hard work and dedication.They are truly representative of what it means to be Hawk!

Finally, we are grateful for the annual support of our alumni, parents, fans and friends.Your generosity provides our student-athletes with the resources necessary to reachtheir goals and attain the level of success which is highlighted in this Annual Report.Thank you for your passion and continued partnership.

Saint Joseph's University will serve as the host institution for the 2015 and 2016 NCAA Women's LacrosseChampionships at PPL Park in Chester,Pa. The Philadelphia area has hosted14 NCAA Championships since 2000.

The SJU Athletic Department saw its presence on social media grow in 2013-14, surpassing 6,800 likes on Facebook and 4,000 followers on Twitter, as well as launching an Instagram page. SJU relaunched SJUHawks.com, the officialwebsite for Saint Joseph’s athletics, in August.In conjunction with its new technology partner,NeuLion, Inc., the redesigned website featuresa clean appearance and user-friendly navigation,which brings videos, photos, and audiovisualcontent to the forefront, as well as offeringeasier access to social media outlets. HawksAll-Access provides expanded streaming oflive games, as well as exclusive access topress conferences for subscribers. Overall thesite has received over 3.9 million page viewssince its launch.

The Saint Joseph's men’s basketball teamcapped a record-setting season by winningthe 2014 Atlantic 10 Championship at theBarclays Center in Brooklyn and earningan automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.Capturing the third Atlantic 10 title and 20thNCAA appearance in program history, SJUfinished the season with an overall recordof 24-10, falling in overtime to eventual national champion Connecticut in the NCAASecond Round. Seniors Langston Galloway,Halil Kanacevic and Ronald Roberts, Jr.were named to the A-10 All-Conference andAll-Championship teams, while freshmanDeAndré Bembry was the A-10 Co-Rookieof the Year.

Men’s Basketball Captures Atlantic 10 Championship, NCAA Bid

In its first season in the Northeast Conference, the men's lacrosse team went11-4 overall, including 6-0 in league play, captured the NEC regular season title,and hosted the NEC Championship on Sweeney Field. Taylor Wray was namedthe NEC Coach of the Year and junior Ryan McGee was tabbed as both theNEC Offensive Player and Scholar-Athlete of the Year. A total of 11 Hawksearned All-Conference honors.

Men’s Lacrosse Claims NEC Title Baseball Sets Record forWins, Claims Liberty BellClassic Crown

The SJU baseball team enjoyed thefinest season in program history,amassing a school record 35 winsand finishing second in the Atlantic 10.For the second time in three seasons,the Hawks qualified for the Atlantic 10Championship, won the Liberty BellClassic at Citizens Bank Park, andwere named the Big 5 Baseball Teamof the Year.

Fritz Hamburg earned A-10 and Big 5Coach of the Year honors, while CollinForgey and Jordan Carter headlineda list of 10 Hawks receiving postseasonaccolades by being named A-10 andBig 5 Player and Pitcher of the Year,respectively.

The Saint Joseph's women’s basketballteam continued its run of success in2013-14, capturing the Big 5 title, postingits fourth-straight 20-win season and returning to the NCAA Tournament forthe second consecutive year, where itknocked off Georgia to advance to theSecond Round. Senior Erin Shields andjunior Natasha Cloud led the way for theHawks, garnering First Team All-Big 5and Second Team All-Atlantic 10 honors.

Ryan McGee was named the Northeast Conference Men’sLacrosse Offensive Player of the Year and Scholar-Athleteaward winner. A USILA Scholar All-American, he wasalso a Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area selectionand NEC Spring Academic Honor Roll honoree. McGeeled the NEC in scoring with 3.79 points per game and2.83 goals per game.

Forgey Earns All-America, Academic All-America HonorsCollin Forgey was named to the American Baseball Coaches Association All-America ThirdTeam, as well as the Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-America Second Team. The firstHawk to be named Atlantic 10 and Big 5 BaseballPlayer of the Year, he also garnered ECAC andAll-East Region First Team honors, was namedto the A-10 and Big 5 All-Academic teams andwas voted the Big 5 Baseball Student-Athlete ofthe Year and the Philadelphia Inquirer BaseballAcademic All-Area Performer of the Year.

Carter Named A-10, Big 5Pitcher of the YearJordan Carter was named the Atlantic 10 and Big 5 Pitcher ofthe Year. The first Hawk to reachthe 10-win plateau in a season,he finished the year 10-4 with a2.45 ERA and 81 strikeouts in95.2 innings pitched.

McGee Tabbed as NEC Men’s Lacrosse Offensive Player,Scholar-Athlete of the Year

Galloway, Hawkins Receive Class of 1950 AwardMo Hawkins (women’s soccer) andLangston Galloway (men’s basketball)were honored with the Class of 1950Award as SJU's top graduating student-athletes at the University'sCommencement in May.

A three-time All-Region selection,Hawkins tied the school record for career goals with 33, while rankingsecond in career points (78) and thirdin assists (12). The only player in SJUhistory to earn All-Conference honorsfour times, she was named the Atlantic 10 Midfielder of the Year in2011 and 2012.

A three-time All-Atlantic 10 and All-Big5 selection, Galloway helped themen’s basketball team win the 2014A-10 Championship. He holds theschool's record for career three-pointfield goals with 334 and ranks secondwith 1,991 career points.

Hawk Coaches Garner Top HonorsIan Crookenden, who guided both the men’s and women’s tennis teams toschool records for victories in a season, was selected as the USTA PhiladelphiaArea Tennis District's College Coach of the Year for 2013.

Fritz Hamburg was recognized as the Atlantic 10 and Big 5 Baseball Coachof the Year after managing the Hawks to a school-record 35 wins, including aprogram best 18-8 mark in the A-10 and a second-place finish in the conference.

Taylor Wray received Northeast Conference Men’s Lacrosse Coach of theYear honors after leading the Hawks to the NEC regular season title and an11-4 overall record.

The future is bright for the Hawks as threestudent-athletes, DeAndré Bembry (men’sbasketball), Emily Gingrich (women’s soccer) and John Mascioli (men’s crosscountry), were recognized as the toprookie performers in their respectivesports by the Atlantic 10 Conference.

Bembry, who was also named the Big 5’stop rookie, averaged 12.1 points and 4.5rebounds per game. Gingrich finishedsecond on the team and led all rookies inscoring with seven goals and 16 points.Mascioli turned in the top freshman performance at the A-10 Championship.

Simanski, Hanrahan Competein Lacrosse All-Star GamesSenior captains JohnnySimanski and BrittanyHanrahan were tabbedto play for the Southteams at the USILA and IWLCA North-SouthAll-Star Games. TheUSILA game was playedat Baltimore's M&T BankStadium, while thewomen played at CabriniCollege.

Senior Aaron Leskow represented SaintJoseph’s at the NCAA East RegionalPreliminary Rounds in the 1500m. Thesenior won the Atlantic 10 indoor mile andoutdoor 1500m titles to become the firstHawk since 2006 to earn a gold medal at both A-10 meets in the same year. Additionally, Leskow broke SJU's schoolrecord in the 3k in 8:07.07 at IC4As.

Seniors Erin Shields (women's basketball)and Emma Slattery (women's track andcross country) were the recipients of Atlantic10 Postgraduate Scholarship awards. Thetandem were among 10 recipients from A-10 member institutions who received $7,000to contribute towards full-time enrollment ingraduate or professional programs.

A business major, Shields was a two-timemember of the A-10 Women’s BasketballAll-Academic Team. Slattery, who majoredin biology, was a member of the 2012 At-lantic 10 Cross Country All-Academic Team.Both student-athletes were named to theCapital One/CoSIDA Academic All-DistrictFirst Team in 2013-14.

Shields and Slattery Awarded Atlantic 10 Postgraduate Scholarships

Four Saint Joseph's University athleticteams - golf, women's lacrosse, women'srowing and softball - have earned PublicRecognition Awards from the NationalCollegiate Athletic Association fortheir latest Academic ProgressRate (APR) scores.

It marks the fifth consecutive yearthat both women's lacrosse andwomen's rowing have earned thisrecognition, while it is the third year in a rowfor the golf program. The APR measures eligibility, graduation and retention each semester or quarter. Recognition Awards

are given annually to teams scoring in thetop 10 percent in each sport with their respective APRs.

In addition to the APR score, SaintJoseph's University student-athletescontinue to make positive progresstowards graduation and posted aGraduation Success Rate (GSR)of 93 percent, according to the

NCAA's 2013 GSR Report. Thismarks the third consecutive year that SJU'srate has shown an increase. Saint Joseph'srate is higher than the average of all NCAADivision I student-athletes.

Boo Williams ’81 Honored atBasketball Hall of FameMarcellus “Boo” Williams’81 was honored at the2013 Naismith MemorialBasketball Hall of FameEnshrinement Ceremonyin September with the Mannie Jackson Basketball's HumanSpirit Award. The award recognizes anindividual who has found basketball asa contributing aspect to their growth, aplace to develop an understanding ofothers, and an avenue to become a recognized visionary and leader.

The baseball, track and men’s and women’s basketball teams recognized the achievements of several former Hawks with inductioninto their respective Halls of Fame. Inductees included Dan Lauer ’96 and Joe Levins ’72 (baseball), Ben Koch ’02 and Thuy Nguyen’06 (men’s and women’s track & cross country), Amy Facer ’97 (women’s basketball) and Delonte West (men’s basketball).

The men’s and women’s tennis teamsposted banner seasons in 2014, withboth squads breaking school records fordual match victories. The men won 17matches, recording double-digit wins inthree consecutive seasons for the firsttime in program history, while thewomen notched 16 wins and racked updouble-digit victories for the secondstraight year, a program first.

Individually, junior Aurora Davis wasnamed to the Atlantic 10 Women’s All-Conference First Team, becoming justthe second Hawk in program history to earn All-Conference honors twice.She was also tabbed to the PhiladelphiaInquirer Academic All-Area squad.

On the men’s side, senior Jose Sierra garnered All-Conference Second Teamhonors for the second consecutive year,while sophomore Andres Urrea wasnamed to the A-10 All-Academic Team.

SJU head coach Ian Crookenden washonored as the USTA Philadelphia AreaDistrict 2013 College Coach of the Year.

Men’s & Women’s Tennis Post Record Seasons

Men’s Soccer Returns to the Atlantic 10 ChampionshipFor the first time since 1994, the Saint Joseph’s men’s soccer team qualifiedfor the Atlantic 10 Championship. The Hawks won three of their final four A-10matches to earn the seventh seed and advance to the postseason. A pair ofsignificant wins came in SJU’s 1-0 upset of #25/24 VCU, as well as a 1-0 victoryover Temple. Sophomore Tim Lazorko earned a spot on the Philadelphia SoccerSix All-Star Team for the second consecutive year.

Women’s Cross Country Places3rd at ECACs; Barrett LeadsHawks on TrackA third-place team finish at the ECACCross Country Championship, as wellas notable individual performances by senior Lizzy Barrett, highlighted the yearfor the women’s track and cross countryteams.

Barrett led the Hawk harriers at all eightmeets during the fall season, includingwinning the Friend Big 5 Invitationaland garnering All-Conference honorsafter helping SJU to a sixth-place finishat the A-10 Championship. She wasamong four Hawks, including seniorsErin Giampietro and Emma Slatteryand sophomore Lauren Hehir, who received ECAC All-East recognition.

On the track, Barrett anchored thebronze medal DMR at the A-10 IndoorChampionships and claimed the bronzein the 1500m at the A-10 Outdoor meet.Two school records were broken asjunior Georgia Mason bested her ownrecord in the 60m hurdles (8.82) andthe Sprint Medley Relay broke SJU’s16-year record in the event (4:04.54).At the Ursinus Pentathlon, junior KaylaCharles became the first Hawk to winan indoor pentathlon.

McNulty Leads SJU on the LinksPaced by sophomore T.J. McNulty, the golfteam finished in seventh place at the A-10Championship at the TPC Tampa Bay.Named to the Atlantic 10 All-ConferenceTeam, McNulty posted four top-10 finishesand twice earned A-10 Performer of theWeek honors during the season.

For the second straight year, the men’scross country team captured the silvermedal at the Atlantic 10 Championship.Senior Aaron Leskow and junior LoganMohn earned All-Conference honors withthird- and fifth-place finishes, respectively,while freshman John Mascioli was namedthe meet's Most Outstanding Rookie. TheHawks also took home the silver medal atIC4As. Mohn and Leskow earned silverand bronze individual medals to lead theHawks and the duo joined sophomoreQuinn Davis and senior Tom O’Kane in receiving IC4A All-East Team honors. Inaddition, the team earned USTFCCCA Division I All-Academic recognition for thesecond consecutive year.

On the track, 15 Hawks earned A-10 All-Conference honors and 14 received IC4AAll-East recognition between the indoorand outdoor seasons. For the second year in a row, the Hawks placed third at theA-10 Indoor Championships, led by goldmedal performances in the 800m, mile,4x8, and DMR. The DMR made history asit broke both the A-10 Indoor and RhodeIsland Mackal Field House records with atime of 9:57.64. SJU was the only team toscore all three of its relays at the IC4A Indoor Championships and the only teamto medal all three of its relays at the A-10outdoor meet. Sophomore Alec Peabodyearned two IC4A All-East honors on theyear and owns the second-fastest outdoor200m time in program history.

Women’s Rowing Places Third at Atlantic 10 ChampionshipsThe women's rowing team placed third at the Atlantic 10 Championships, whichwere held at the Occoquan Reservoir inFairfax Station, Va. Both the Varsity 8 andThird Varsity 8 took home bronze medalsfor the Hawks. Individually, senior MyraMcCann and junior Amanda McEvoywere named Atlantic 10 All-ConferenceFirst Team, while sophomore Maura Mahoney earned All-A-10 Second Teamhonors. The team also received a PublicRecognition Award from the NCAA for itsAcademic Progress Rating.

Softball Makes Seventh StraightPostseason AppearanceBreakout performances by juniors AshleyAlden and Melissa Ruf, sophomore HannahDionne and freshman Niki Carillo helped theHawk softball team earn its seventh straighttrip to the A-10 Championship, placing thirdduring the regular season and at the postseason tournament. Alden was named tothe NFCA All-Northeast Region Second Teamand joined Ruf on the A-10 All-ConferenceSecond Team. Dionne garnered NFCA All-Northeast Region Third Team honors, whileCarillo became the first SJU pitcher to benamed to the A-10 All-Rookie Team.

Student-Athletes Participate inMLK Day of ServiceMore than 200 Saint Joseph's student-athletesparticipated in the Martin Luther King Jr. Day ofService on January 20, continuing an annual tradition for members of Saint Joseph's athleticsquads. Members from 12 varsity teams pitchedin to help clean up various areas in the community.

In October, former NBA basketball player Chris Herren, the subject of the ESPN“30 for 30” documentary “Unguarded,” spoke to SJU student-athletes about his battle with drug and alcohol addiction. It marked the second consecutive year that Herren spoke on campus as part of SJU's Life Skills program.

Beginning in the fall of 2013, a collectivegroup of student-athletes began meetingon a monthly basis with the purpose of“Developing as Everyday Champions.”The group’s goal was to integrate theirshared interests in sports, life and faith.The group offered an opportunity to learnlife skills, build community and reflect onshared experience through programmingand events which addressed academics,athletics, spirituality, personal growth andprofessional development.

2013-14 SERVICE PROJECTSSJU student-athletes exemplified the Jesuit ideal of being “men and women for others” by participating in a broad array of service programs in 2013-14. Overall, theHawks participated in over 5,000 hours of service, impacting the lives of thousandsof individuals throughout the Delaware Valley.

Hawks vs. Cancer, a new signature programinitiated by the Saint Joseph's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, promotesprevention, creates awareness, and raisessupport for cancer research. Launched in2012 by members of the women’s soccerteam and formally established as a studentgroup in 2013-14, Hawks vs. Cancer hasworked with each varsity team to host cancerawareness days at home contests. Sinceits establishment, the group has raisednearly $20,000 for the American CancerSociety and Team BAMit, a nonprofit organization that helps women and theirfamilies affected by cervical cancer.

Thanks to generous support of the NorrisLocker Room Challenge (track) and theleadership of the Blaney Family (soccer),the men’s and women’s track and men’ssoccer locker rooms were expanded andrenovated to provide more functional andcomfortable spaces for the student-athletes.Highlights included the installation of spacious wooden lockers, new carpet andlarge screen televisions.

Track and Men’s Soccer Locker Rooms Expanded, Renovated SJU Dedicates New Boat inHonor of Gillin ’49, Byron ’51The SJU rowing programs recognizedthe accomplishments of two of the University’s most distinguished alumni,Robert Gillin ’49 and Rev. WilliamByron, S.J. ’51, with the dedication ofthe newest women’s shell (Byron-GillinAMDG) in their honor.

Longtime University landmark Finnesey Field was rededicated as Sweeney Field this year inconjuction with the completion of an extensive expansion project. The expansion included theaddition of 1,200 permanent seats to the hillside nearest to Barbelin Hall, as well as the additionof 1,100 portable seats, increasing total seating capacity to 3,000. Named in honor of Sean S.Sweeney ’94 (MBA), the lead benefactor to the project, renovations also featured a new stonefacade highlighted by two dramatic bronze Hawk statues, protective netting behind each goal,a full service press box and an enhanced sound system.
