MONKS LOOK TO DEFEND GREAT NORTHEASTATHLETIC CONFERENCE TITLE AND RETURNTO NCAA NEW ENGLAND REGIONAL

The last four seasons have been among the mostsuccessful in Saint Josephs College Baseball history andthe Monks are looking to continue that trend in 2009. In2005, the St. Joes Baseball Team finished with a 32-10record and captured their first NAC Championship andECAC berth. The 2006 version of Monks Baseball tookthe program to new heights by posting a second con-secutive 30-win season (34-10-1), second consecutiveNorth Atlantic Conference Championship, and first-everappearance in the NCAA New England Regional. In 2007,Saint Josephs College established the program as one ofthe top in New England with a third straight 30-winseason (30-10), third consecutive North Atlantic Confer-ence Championship, and second straight trip to theNCAA New England Regional. 2008 presented a newchallenge, as St. Joes moved into the Great NortheastAthletic Conference. After a slow start in conference play(0-4 in the first weekend), the Monks rebounded tocapture the teams first GNAC Championship and ad-vanced to the NCAA New England Regional for the thirdconsecutive year. Even with heavy losses to graduation,Coach Sanborn looks for his team to contend for the2009 GNAC Championship and be in a position to chal-lenge at the regional level.

Great Northeast Athletic Conference baseball looksto be very competitive in 2009. With quality teams fromSuffolk University, Johnson and Wales University, Nor-wich University, Rivier College, Albertus Magnus College,Emerson College, and Lasell College, the Monks will haveall they can handle with a demanding conference sched-ule. If hard work, a positive attitude, and a competitivespirit are any indication, St. Joes Baseball is poised tocompete at the top of the GNAC with the goal being afourth straight appearance in the NCAA Tournament.

St. Joes will open the schedule with a trip to WinterHaven, Florida. The schedule looks challenging with

2009 SEASON OUTLOOK

strong opponents such as Worcester Polytechnic Insti-tute, Thomas More College, Skidmore College and St.Joes of New York. Coach Sanborn comments on the2009 southern swing, This should be a great trip thespring trip to Florida is always something to look forwardto, but this year will be more challenging as the teamswill be stronger. I am confident that our team will befocused on winning baseball games and getting ourseason off to a good start. We have been gearing all ofour efforts in the early season toward making sure weare ready to compete on day one. This team has theveteran leadership needed to put together another runat the NCAA New England Regional. Following the nine-game Florida schedule, the Monks will head for NewJersey for a three-game set with New Jersey CityUniversity.

The New England portion of the schedule should bevery challenging in 09. Coach Sanborn on the 2009 NewEngland schedule, I feel our schedule will prepare uswell for the GNAC tourney and the NCAA Regional. Lastyear, we began to develop some rivalries within theGNAC; we really look forward to competing with theseteams. We will be hosting the GNAC tournament for thefirst time this year, and we really want to do a first-classjob so that we can continue to host our conferencetournament. We also have a very competitive non-conference schedule including teams like the Universityof Southern Maine, Keene State , Bowdoin and AmherstColleges. If we can compete with this schedule, weshould have a shot at not only getting back to theRegional, but winning it. We have always believed thata strong regular season schedule will help us compete inthe postseason and 2009 is no different. We believe thisteam will exhibit a strong balance of solid pitching, timely hitting, and outstanding defense. Since the GreatNortheast Athletic Conference has an automatic qualifi-cation to the NCAA Regional, our conference schedulewill certainly be the focus of our efforts in the month ofApril.

Catching

The Monks will feature atalented group of catchers. Sopho-more Ian Lee is coming off anoutstanding first year donning theRoyal Blue after hitting .341 andbeing named GNAC Rookie of theYear. Junior Travis Adams of Saco,Maine, returns and will share thecatching duties. Traviss outstand-ing defensive ability and his strongleft-handed bat make this duoamong the top in the conference.

Page 6: 2009 Saint Joseph's (Me.) Baseball Media Guide

2008 SEASON OUTLOOK

Senior Michael Hebenstreit will continue to provideleadership and freshman Jon Dahms will add to thedepth at this critical position.

Coach Sanborn on the importance of this group ofcatchers, Everything starts with the catchers for thisball club. We have a young pitching staff who will feedoff the leadership of the catching corps. Depth behindthe plate will also help us in backup roles at otherpositions, and at times, the catchers will fill the desig-nated hitters spot.

Infield

The Monks infield will have anew look in 2009 much willdepend on how quickly theymature. One familiar face will bejunior first baseman Ben Grant-Roy (.367. 7 HR, 41 RBI). Ben willanchor a young infield and hit inthe middle of the order for CoachSanborn. Pat Moran and froshPeter Allain will also vie for time atfirst base.

Youthful exhuberance willdominate the rest of the Monks infield spots! The hotcorner will feature two solid prospects in freshmen, twoMaine products, Justin Frechette of Oxford Hills High andDan Brown of Deering High. The shortstop position willfeature sophomore Chris Campbell and freshman DanAchorn of Bow, New Hampshire. At second base, juniorMike Burdin will vie for time with Justin Young ofSanford, Maine. How this young group of infieldersshakes out will be perhaps the biggest question for theMonks as the 09 campaign gets under way.

Coach Sanborn on the prospects for the infield, Wehave some new faces in the infield this year, and I amexcited about their potential. It is great to have youngguys who want to work and improve each day. If theseyoung players can mature and demonstrate poise, weshould have a nice year. Good defense is a key to win-ning games so we will put a lot of focus on this aspect ofthe game each day in practice.

Outfield

The Monks have agood mix of veteransand newcomers in theoutfield for 2008. SeniorWade Oliver returns afterthree stellar years forSJC. As a freshman in2006, he was named

North Atlantic Conference Rookie of the Year and NACTournament MVP. As a sophomore, Wade hit .364 with17 walks and 34 runs scored out of the leadoff spot. Asa junior, Wade hit .341 with 30 RBI while continuing toplay a remarkable right field. Sophomores Eric LaBatte(.283, 13 RBI) and Todd Keneborus (.341, 15 RBI) willplay even bigger roles in 2009. Craig Woodbrey willmove from the mound to the outfield and could be thebiggest surprise of 2009. Senior Stephan Gorsun willcontinue to be a key player off the bench for the Monksas a defensive replacement or pinch runner.

Coach Sanborn on the outfielders, We have severalveteran outfielders who know how to play together, yetthey may be playing new positions this year. We shouldhave one of the top defensive teams around, and I amconfident we will have outstanding outfield play in 2009.I also look for these guys to be the offensive backboneof the team.

Pitching

Once again the Monks possess a great deal ofpotential in this, the most important aspect of the game.If the young pitchers on the staff can develop quickly, the Monks could have one of the strongest pitching staffsin New England again this year.

Saint Josephs College willhave a good mix of returners andveterans available to toe the slabin 2009. Senior Captain AndyPooler will lead the staff, whetherfrom a starting or relieving role.Junior left-handers AndrewKeirstead and Kyle Dorr shouldplay key roles for Coach Sanborn.Dorr was 2-1 with a 3.06 era andKeirstead was 6-3 and claimed theGNAC Tournament Most ValuablePlayer Award in 08. Anotherjunior, lanky righ-hander Pat Moran, should pitch near

the top of the rotation in 2009.Moran pitched much better thanhis 4-5 record in 08 and hassomething to prove in 09. Yetanother junior who should playa key role is right-handed relieverChris Nanof. Coach Sanborn willlook to Chris to be a reliable set-up man. Junior transfer ShawnHall (SMCC) has a strong workethic and could vie for a spot inthe starting rotation.

Page 7: 2009 Saint Joseph's (Me.) Baseball Media Guide

5

2008 SEASON OUTLOOK

The sophomore class featuresseveral pitchers who played a keyrole in 08 and will be relied oneven more in 09. Right-handedstarter Mason Roberge (6-2, 4.07era) and left-handed relieverChris Dion should be the go-toguys for Coach Sanborn this year.Lefty Matt Mullen and righty KevinChamberlain have worked hard toexpand their roles this year.

The freshman class will be ledon the mound by lefty Steven Murray. This Walpole High(Mass.) product was one of the top pitchers in Massa-chusetts last year and should compete to be in thestarting rotation as a freshman. Another lefty withpromise is control specialist Gerry Howley of Millis, Mass.Yet another impressive first-year pitcher is right-handerCurtis Orlik from Brimfield, Mass. Freshman Josh Astburyhad a strong fall baseball season and will also be in thehunt for innings.

Coach Sanborn on his pitching staff, Pitching is thekey and this group has a lot of unanswered questions, yet I am confident they will come along quickly and giveus what we need. If we are going to contend for anNCAA bid we have to go 8-10 deep with our staff. Withour competitive schedule, we need quality starts andpeople we can count on in relief.

Overall

Coach Sanborn with histhoughts on the upcoming season his seventeenth year as theMonks skipper: Expectations areextremely high for this group, buteven more so within the group. After four consecutive conferencechampionships and three straighttrips to the NCAA New EnglandRegional, these veterans expect towin, and they know what it takesto win. Despite the successfultradition this program has had

over the years, we have a lot of newcomers in keypositions. How quickly the new players come along willbe a key. One of the things that may set this group apartis the team chemistry. We have strong leadership andthe guys really pull together. The work ethic is outstand-ing and they are very competitive. I look for this to bean extremely exciting year.

An honor studentat Rockland, Wade was a two timeKVAC All-Conference selection.Wade was also selected for theFrozen Ropes Underclassman All-Star Game and the Maine SeniorBaseball All-Star Classic. Asa senior captain, Coach Sanborn looksfor Wade to provide stability andleadership for the Monks lineup.

Wade is the son of Richie Oliverand Tanja Patterson.

My tenure at St. Joes is coming to anend, and it seems as though I just arrivedon campus as a wet behind the earsfreshman to steal a Coach Sanborn quote.Coach steered me away from that otherschool down the road and coming hereturned out to be the best decision I haveever made. Now I could write page afterpage about my experience here at SJC,however, I probably have some kind of limitso I will keep it short. It may sound cliché,but my years here have been the best of mylife. The relationships that I have

established along the way are priceless. I couldnt have asked for abetter situation to come into after high school.

First, I would like to thank my entire family for all of theirsupport throughout the years. There is no way I would be where I amtoday without their guidance. I would also like to thank Coach Sanbornfor giving me the opportunity to play baseball for him. I have learned atremendous amount from him, not only just about the game, but aboutlife. I do now understand the Greater Purpose of Saint JosephsBaseball. Coach Sanborn is truly a hard working man of integrityand instills that in his players. His dedication to the program and hisplayers is second to none. I just hope someday he will tell stories aboutme to his players as he does about my favorite Monk baseball player ofall time, Francois Boutin. And Coach, once again, its the 27 Yankees.

I would also like to thank all the assistant coaches over the years, especially Coach McCarthy. He is a key reason to my growth as abaseball player and always there to share a good movie quote with. AndI could never forget Father John. I had the privilege of spending myfreshman year at school while he was there. FJ was, and still is, therefor you whenever you need anything, whether it be homework, studyingfor a test, or some advice. He will go out of his way to help you. Ishould also take the time to thank all my teammates over the pastyears. The moments weve had together I will cherish my whole life.

Our team chemistry and perseverance hastruly made us a better squad, not tomention an awesome group to be around. The baseball team has been a family awayfrom home for me, and I am forevergrateful for that. I will be sharing storiesabout you men for the rest of my life.Lastly, I want to thank all of my room-mates from Suite O: Pooler, Snuffy,Benny, OB, Burdman, and even those twoguys that live at the end of the hall, Legerand Kyle. There is never a dull momentwith you clowns and I have loved everysecond of it.

The 2009 Monks Baseball team willbe a fun team to watch. We have a solidmix of veterans and first-year players, notto mention a great coaching staff that willbe out to defend the GNAC Championshipcrown. I have been fortunate to win threeconference championships in three yearswith the Monks, and Im going to doeverything I can to make it four for four.As Coach Mirabello would say, I amJACKED UP for this season fellas! Thanks again everybody for all thesupport, especially the school and all thestudents. GO MONKS!!!

A fine example for histeammates with outstandingleadership qualities, StephanGorsun will serve as a captainfor St. Joes, along with WadeOliver and Andy Pooler, duringhis senior season.

Stephan played his highschool baseball at MarshwoodHigh School in South Berwick,Maine.

Steves speed, versatility and positive attitude makehim a key asset for the Monks. In his tenure at St. Joes,Stephan has played a backup role in the outfield and isoften the first pinch runner off the bench for CoachSanborn. The Monks skipper on Steve; Steve is animportant member of our ball club. He has manyleadership qualities, both on and off the field. It is veryvaluable to be able to bring someone off the bench whomyou can trust to run the bases wisely. Steve also plays asolid outfield and is a contact hitterwho can handle the bat. Stephan isa great student and is wellrespected on campus he is a fineexample for our younger players.

Stephan is the son of Charlieand Patty Gorsun of South Berwick,Maine.

We are faced with big decisions inlife everyday, but nearly four years ago,in a dorm room at Bentley College, Imade the best decision of my young life. Icame to St. Joes as a second semestertransfer who was a bit lost in life andlooking for direction and a place tobelong; St. Joes and the baseball teamwas just that. I didnt know what toexpect coming in, but the team pulled mein like I had been there all along. Ilearned quickly that baseball at St. Joeswas something special. The culture wehave that brings us so tightly together

and makes this team so unique is truly a credit to Coach Sanborn.

There is no doubt that Coach Sanborn has been extremelysuccessful coaching baseball at St. Joes. Hes brought the programto new heights, but I commend him more, not for teaching andcoaching the game of baseball, but for teaching and coaching life.Hes been able to use baseball as a way to teach us integrity andaccountability and the skills it takes to be successful not only on thefield, but in the real world. In short, hes helped teach us what itmeans to be men. For that, Im forever grateful.

Coach has also put together a group of guys that is more thanjust a baseball team. From the outside, most people dont under-stand it. This team is more than wins and losses, or individuals. At the risk of sounding corny, its a family.Theyre not only thereto celebrate success, but to pick you up when life gets rough; thetype of guys youd want in the trenches with you. The time Ivespent with these guys has been some of the best times of my life. There are so many stories and experiences weve been able to share, and I consider myself lucky to have been a part of it all.

To Wade, Pooler, Hebe and the rest of the Suite-O fellahs,I dont think I could ask for betterfriends. Weve had some great times andmore laughs than I could ever count. Iwouldnt have it any other way. Id alsolike to thank my family for all their loveand support. I appreciate all the thingsyou guys do for me and everythingyouve sacrificed to help me get to whereI am today. I didnt forget about you,Coach McCarthy; just think of it assaving the best for last. For close to eightyears youve been a steady supportsystem in my life, a great coach, buta better friend.

Although Im dreading it, at somepoint this ride will come to an end, butwhen all is said and done, I can sit backand know that Im ready for thechallenges the real world will hold, duein great part to the fact that I was luckyenough to play baseball and go to schoolat St. Joes.

Anoutstanding right-handed pitcher,Andy led his high school team tothe Eastern Maine Class B Champi-onship and an appearance in thestate title game at Larry MahaneyDiamond on the campus of SaintJosephs College. Andy possesses agood fastball, which is compli-mented by a nice breaking ball thathe can throw for strikes.

As a freshman at St. Joes, Andy pitched well, but had limitedappearances. As a sophomore, Andy came to the forefront as oneof the Monks top relievers. He led the team with 17 appearancesand boasted a 2-0 record and a 3.09 era. As a junior, Andy neverreally got on track as his ERA shot up to 5.94. Look for Andy torebound and anchor the Monks relief corps in 2009.

Andy is the son of Bob & Jane Pooler of Southwest Harbor,Maine.

There are so many important decisions you have to make in your life.Making your college choice is arguably one of the most important. Thankfully,my family and I made the right choice. Its not because of the three conferencechampionships, three NCAA tournamentappearances and 92 wins, but because of lifelongfriends and teammates. After my four years hereat St. Josephs College, I couldnt ask foranything better. The small school atmosphereprovided me with the opportunity to grow as aperson, and provided me with some of the bestfriends anyone could ask for.

These four years have gone by in the blinkof an eye, and I wish I could go back andexperience it again because it was so good. Beinga member of the baseball team made me a partof something that was truly unbelievable. I wasblessed to play with some of the hardest workingmen on a baseball diamond, and it was great. The St. Joes baseball team wasnt just a groupof roughneck baseball players taking the field toGarth Brooks, but a family who would runthrough a wall for anyone. We have spent all ofour time together, whether it is on the road, cramming four guys in a hotel room after a toughloss, or living together on campus for four years. These are the guys who will be in my life forever.

I remember the first baseball meeting Iwent to. There were about 30-35 players lookingfor an opportunity to play for one of the bestprograms in New England. Now at the lastmeeting, there are only four of us who haveplayed all four years, and I will alwaysremember coach Sanborn telling us during the

fall, with a wink, that we are the only ones stubborn enough to stick around, but I couldnt imagine not being a Monk, and most of that feeling is thanks toCoach Sanborn.

Coach Sanborn doesnt get enough credit for what he has done over thesepast four years, and not because of all the teams accolades. What he has doneis taken my teammates and me and turned us into men. Over the past fouryears, Coach has taught me that baseball isnt about stats and wins, but aboutpride, because in todays sport society, baseball is becoming a business. Coachmade sure this didnt happen by seeing that we cherished the game and the timewith our teammates every day.

He didnt push us through four-hour practices and morning runs justbecause he could, but to build character. The reason for these was to help usrealize that for us to win, we must be mentally and physically tough on and offthe field. He has taught me to first excel off the field, and that will allow for meto succeed on the diamond. Coach also paved the way for all of us to mold intofine young men on campus and in the community, and made us a family whocannot be separated. Coach has been a great friend off the field to all of us, butmore importantly, the ultimate leader on the field who I would play for any day.

There have been so many memorable moments here being a part of theSJC baseball team. Of course the ones that stick out are all the conferencechampionships and my first career win when I was a sophomore, but thesearent the best. The best moments I remember are traveling together as a teamon the little busses and vans singing What was she thinking, or the roadtrips from one city to another, not having a care in the world but just baseball,or Coach Sanborn yelling at us to fire up the Monk mobile to get a comeback

going, or the pitching staff playing MonksFantasy Baseball to see which hitter would havethe best day at the plate.

I would first like to thank my family for theopportunity to come to SJC and for coming to allthose games to support me. Love you guys verymuch. Thank you to the coaching staff foreverything they have done for me and myteammates. Thank you to Coach for molding meinto a man and teaching me that the game ofbaseball isnt all about stats and winning, butabout having fun. Thank you Coach McCarthyfor being like a brother to me over the four years.Thank you Coach Choroszy for believing in meto lead the pitching staff. I wish I had three moreyears to work with you. And thank you to CoachMirabello for always keeping me positive andupbeat. Lastly, to my friends/teammates/roommates who I have lived with for so long,Wadeo, Snuffy, Burdy, OB, Benny and Heeby, you guys are my best friends and brothers.

I have spent my life playing baseball, haveplayed on other teams and played for othercoaches, but nothing compares to what I haveexperienced as a Monk. We are a family, on andoff the field, and we always will be brothers. Ithas been an honor and a privilege to button upthe #23 Saint Josephs College jersey every dayand to play for Coach Sanborn.

This is a game to be savored, not gulped. Therestime to discuss everything between pitches orbetween innings.

When I was graduating high school, the decision aboutwhere I wanted to attend college wasbased on three things. First, the schoolneeded to have my intended major.Second, it had to be a small college, because I thought my high school wastoo big. And finally, the college had tohave a winning baseball team that Icould have a chance at making.Looking back on my decision, I do nothave any regrets about choosing SaintJosephs College over any other schoolI could have attended.

Everybody has heard the phrase,Time flies when you are having fun,and I will be the first to say that wehave had our fun, and the timecertainly has not stopped. It seems likeyesterday I was moving my stuff intoStandish Hall and had to have mymom and grandfather finish movingmy stuff in because of the meeting atLarry Mahaney Diamond that allfreshman had to attend. Some of the

memories I will walk away with include three trips in threeyears to the NCAA Regional Tournament on the Cape, thecountless trips to the bullpen, and abundance of other storiesthat have been told and that have been created in the vansand in the dorms. These memories could not have been madeanywhere else because I have not seen or heard of any otherschool talk about their teammates and coaches like we do here. The relationships that were made on this team will live onforever, and I cannot thank every former and current playerenough for letting me carry these stories and memories on forthe rest of my life. Special thanks to Wade, Andy, and Stevefor being there all four years, through all the good, and the fewtough times that we made it through.

The other thing that the baseball program has done for mehere has made me a better student in the classroom, and abetter person off the field. In high school, I did the bareminimum and thought it was okay, but Coach Sanborn reallytaught me that you have to get better and better every day, notonly on the field, but in the classroom too, because, You dont

stay the same; you either get better oryou get worse. Another person whohas made me a better person today isFr. John. Even though he was onlythere for my freshman year, theimpact he had on me, and his willing-ness to reach out and do anything foranybody has inspired me to do thesame whenever the opportunity ariseswith service projects.

I want to thank my parents andsiblings for putting up with me notbeing around much. Being the oldestof five kids, I know it was not easy formy parents to watch their first-borngo away to school, and for all of mysiblings who no longer had their bigbrother around. I love you all andthank you for supporting me ineverything that I have done, and Iknow you all will continue to do so inthe future.

HEAD COACH -WILL SANBORN (#26)

Will Sanborn has built the SaintJosephs baseball program into aconsistent winner. In recent years,Sanborn has led the Monks into theupper echelon of one of thecountrys toughest regions, theNortheast.

Sanborns accomplishments atSaint Josephs have been numerous.During his 16 years as head coach, the Monks have won 20+ games 12times. Recent history has beenparticularly impressive, as theMonks posted three straight 30-winseasons from 2005-07, and a 28-18mark in 2008.

In 2005, Saint Josephs CollegeBaseball began a new era as anassociate member of the NorthAtlantic Conference. In the teamsfirst season in the NAC, the Monksfinished with an impressive 14-1Conference record. Saint JosephsBaseball also won its first NorthAtlantic Conference Championship and made its first-ever ECAC tournament appearance, finishing with a 32-10 record. In 2006, the Monks again charted new terri-tory by posting a 34-10-1 record and making their first-ever trip to the NCAA New England Regional Tourna-ment. In 2007, the Monks won their third consecutiveNorth Atlantic Conference Championship and advancedto the NCAA Division III New England Regional for thesecond consecutive year. Saint Josephs finished the2007 campaign with an outstanding 30-12 record. 2008was the first year in the Great Northeast Conference, and the Monks set the tone by winning the GNAC Cham-pionship and, once again, advancing to the NCAA DIIINew England Regional.

Prior to these most recent NCAA accomplishments, SJCbaseball set the standard for NAIA New England baseballunder Sanborns direction. In 2002, Saint Josephscompleted its NAIA New England dominance by onceagain winning the NAIA New England Championship. TheMonks then moved on to capture the NAIA Region XChampionship in Orangeburg, New York. Sanborn has ledSaint Josephs to New England championships on fivedifferent occasions (1994, 1996, 1997, 2000, 2002) andhas three Maine Athletic Conference titles under his belt(1999, 2000, 2001).

Although his teams have enjoyed a high level ofsuccess recently, success is certainly not new to

Sanborn; he has more wins thanany baseball coach in schoolhistory. He enters the 2009season with a 16-year record of405-247-6 (.621).

Its a tribute to the continuedcommitment that Saint Josephshas made to our baseball pro-gram. The College has given usthe tools to build a winningprogram. The foundation of ourprogram has been the fine youngmen we have been able to attractto our campus, says Sanborn ofhis success with the Monks. Wehave had outstanding groups ofstudent-athletes, assistantcoaches and support staff whohave all contributed to our suc-cess, so I dont think of this as apersonal accomplishment as muchas it is a Saint Josephs accom-plishment.

Since arriving at Saint Josephsas head coach for the fall of 1992,Sanborn has made tremendousimprovements to the baseball

facilities. Larry Mahaney Diamond is one of the finestbaseball facilities in the Northeast and includes a newwooden fence, lights, pressbox, hitting area, bleachers, locker room and an inning-by-inning electronic score-board, making every baseball game at Saint Josephs afirst-class affair.

Sanborns drive to win first became evident during hisplaying career at Saint Josephs from 1984-86 when hewas a member of some of the programs finest teams.During that time, the Monks averaged just over 20 winsper season, including 25-plus wins in 1985 and 1986.

In 1986, his senior season, Sanborn played an integralrole in leading Saint Josephs to their second mostwinning season in program history (34) and their first-ever New England championship. Sanborn is still part ofthe SJC single-season record book for games played(48), runs scored (59) and walks (51).

Prior to taking over as head coach at Saint Josephs,Sanborn coached at many levels. He has held coachingpositions with Bonny Eagle High School, Bar Mills Ameri-can Legion and the Twilight League. 2008 SEASON REVIEW: MONKS FIRST YEAR IN GNAC RESULTS IN CHAMPIONSHIPSaint Josephs College Baseball Captures 2008 Great Northeast Athletic Conference Title

2008 SEASON IN REVIEW

Saint Josephs College Baseball completed its firstseason in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference inexciting fashion, coming out of the number four seed in theconference tournament to capture the title in its first yearof competition in the new conference.

The 2008 campaign began on March 2nd in Florida, atthe Port Charlotte Invitational. After losing two out of thefirst three games, the Monks rebounded, winning five outof their last six in Florida. The Monks completed the springtrip to the sunshine state with wins over Worcester Poly-technic Institute, Thomas More College, Northland College,Olivet College and Misericordia University. With a 6-win-3-loss record coming out of Florida, expectations were highfor the Royal Blue as the team headed north.

The next stop for St. Joes baseball was a weekend tripto the Washington, D.C. area for games with CatholicUniversity and Salisbury University. Little did the teamknow that this trip would begin a skid that would put asuccessful season in jeopardy. On March 20, SJC split adoubleheader with Catholic University thanks to theoffensive punch of Ryan Murphy (2-3 with 2 RBI) and LukeEnman (2-3 with 2 runs scored) in game two. On March21, the Monks dropped a doubleheader to nationally-ranked Salisbury University. The skid continued the follow-ing weekend as the Monks began conference play. Adisappointing weekend was the result, as St. Joes lost allfour games of their first conference weekend with SuffolkUniversity and Johnson and Wales. After losing 7 out of 8games, the team dropped to 7-10 and there was a greatdeal of soul-searching in Standish. With a talented squadand a positive attitude, SJC was looking to rebound as theteam entered the month of April.

April 2008 proved to be a defining month for SJCbaseball as the team began the process of turning theseason around. The pitching staff began to lead the waywith a four-game conference weekend vs. Emerson andDaniel Webster Colleges. In game one of the weekend, PatMoran gave up 3 hits while notching 8 strikeouts as theMonks won 9-1 over Emerson. In the second game, MikeBurdin would provide a solid outing on the hill as hescattered 8 hits giving up no earned runs in a 7-1 SJCvictory. Things were starting to look up as the Monkscompleted the four-game conference weekend with adoubleheader sweep of Daniel Webster College.

Next came one of the biggest non-conference double-headers of the season, as St. Joes played host to BowdoinCollege. Coach Sanborn sent a pair of lefties to the moundagainst the Polar Bears, and he couldnt help but bepleased with the results, as SJC swept a doubleheader

from Bowdoin 12-3 and 10-0 to improve to 13-10. Thusbegan the month of April that would see Saint JosephsCollege go 18-4 and return to regional prominence.

The highlight of the 2008 season came in the GreatNortheast Athletic Conference tournament. Finishing theconference regular season as the #4 seed, St. Joesopened the conference tournament by hosting AlbertusMagnus College. The two teams had split during theregular season and the crowd was large as St. Joes hostedits first-ever GNAC playoff game. Eight Monks notched hits, and Luke Enman led the way by going 2-4 with 3 RBI asSt. Joes advanced to the next round by defeating AlbertusMagnus 10-6. Pat Moran (7 IP, 2 ER, 7 Ks) pitched well, and Chris Dion and Andrew Keirstead finished out thevictory.

Next, the tournament would move to Suffolk Univer-sity, as SJC would take on the #1 seed. Prior to this game,St. Joes had lost to Suffolk four straight times (2 in 2007and 2 in 2008). Coach Sanborn sent lefty Andrew Keirsteadto the mound for the most important game of the year.Keirstead was masterful, as he bested Suffolk starter SteveDurant for the 7-1 victory. Keirstead pitched 9 inningswhile scattering 9 hits and helping Coach Sanborn to notchhis 400th career victory. Wade Oliver (2-5, 2 RBI), BrianSchools (2-5), and Luke Enman (3-5) led the offense to themost satisfying victory of the season.

The road to the GNAC title would not be easy, as thenext GNAC Tournament opponent would be Johnson andWales University. Mason Roberge scattered 8 hits over5 2/3 innings and Chris Dion notched the save with 3 1/3innings of 1 hit, 1 run relief as the Monks defeated Johnsonand Wales 6-4. Luke Enman and Dustin Spiller led the waywith 2 hits each, as SJC moved to the championship game.

Suffolk University was once again the opponent as St.Joes attempted to win the GNAC in the teams first year inthe conference. Pat Moran came through with a CurtSchilling-type of performance. Pitching with a severelybruised groin, Moran went 7 2/3 innings while giving uponly 3 earned runs on 4 strikeouts and 1 walk. AndrewKeirstead pitched the last 1 1/3 innings for the save, asSJC won a thriller by the score of 6-5. The Monks offensewas paced by Luke Enman (2-4, 2 runs), Ben Grant-Roy(2-4, 2 RBI) and Todd Keneborus (2-4, 1 run). LukeEnmans dramatic home run in the eighth inning providedthe margin of victory for the Royal Blue. With the victory,St. Joes captured its first-ever GNAC title and secured aplace in the NCAA DIII New England Regional BaseballTournament.

Larry Mahaney Diamond on thecampus of Saint Josephs College is oneof the finest small-college baseballfacilities in the country. Although thebaseball program at St. Joes began inthe early 1970s, it was not until 1986that the Monks actually played a homegame on the Sebago Lake campus. In1988, lights were added making thefacility the only fully-lighted collegiatebaseball/softball complex in New En-gland. While these were huge steps inthe history of the baseball program, theywere only the first in the development ofwhat has become of the finest baseballfacilities anywhere. On September 29,2001, Saint Josephs College officially dedicated itsbaseball field, Larry Mahaney Diamond, in honor ofMaine businessman and philanthropist Larry Mahaney.

Due to the generous support of the institution, thephilanthropy of Larry Mahaney and the dedication of theplayers and coaches, Larry Mahaney Diamond featuresmany outstanding amenities, including:

Head Baseball Coach Will Sanborn has imple-mented a progressive maintenance plan for allcampus athletic fields.

Coach Sanborn on the future for Larry MahaneyDiamond, Continual improvement to the baseball

facility is a key part of my coachingphilosophy. I want players in our pro-gram to realize that things are alwaysmoving forward with regard to both theprogram and the facility. It is exciting tobe part of a team that is always reachingfor new heights.

Future plans for Larry MahaneyDiamond include the addition of anotherAlumni Box over the first-base dugout, new seating behind home plate and theaddition of another light pole. When Iplayed at St. Joes, we had no baseballfield. We had to drive off campus topractice and play. To go from havingnothing, to having one of the top facili-

ties around is something we are very proud of. Theprogress we have made has been remarkable. We arevery fortunate to have the support of both the institutionand donors like Larry Mahaney.

Larry Mahaney Diamond has been the host site formany prestigious baseball tournaments, including theMaine State High School Baseball Tournament, NewEngland Babe Ruth Baseball Tournament, Maine Ameri-can Legion Baseball Tournament, NAIA New EnglandTournament and the NAIA Super Regional Tournament.

In February 2006, the Maine sports communitysuffered a terrible loss with the death of Larry Mahaney.Mr. Mahaneys vision and generosity not only benefitedSaint Josephs College, but countless others, includingthe University of Maine, where the baseball field,Mahaney Diamond, is also named in his honor. LarryMahaney was also the driving force behind the MaineHigh School Senior All-Star Game.

Larry Mahaneys legacy will live forever at LarryMahaney Diamond at Saint Josephs College.
