Branding and Licensing changes

This release is the first Bentley branded and licensed version of the former FormSys product Multiframe. This section outlines some of the key issues related to that release.

New Product Names

Our product names have changed slightly to provide a clear hierarchy between the products.

New Product Suites

From April 1st we will be introducing 5 new suites of modules which combine together

to create a simpler portfolio of software. These will be available under the SELECT licensing system only. If you are a Maxsurf Advanced or Enterprise user, one of the new Multiframe suites will be included as a part of your Maxsurf suite.

SELECT Product Suites

Multiframe Suite Includes Multiframe, Shape Editor, Non-Linear Analysis, Plate Analysis and one Steel code region pack

Multiframe Advanced Suite Includes Multiframe Advanced, Shape Editor, Non-Linear Analysis, Plate Analysis and all Steel codes

Maxsurf Suite Includes Modeler, Stability, Structure, Fitting, Resistance, VPP and Link

Licensing

SELECT is Bentley’s subscription system which will supercede the FormSys subscription system. When new users purchase Maxsurf or Multiframe, they will also purchase a SELECT subscription. SELECT subscriptions have a number of advantages; including no hardware dongle, simpler setup and floating network licensing.

Legacy Dongle Support

Version 18 of Maxsurf and Version 15 of Multiframe will continue to support our legacy dongles. This will allow users to continue to receive the updates they are entitled to under their existing subscriptions. These will be the last major versions to support hardware dongles.

Subscription Conversion

From April 1st onwards, as FormSys user’s subscriptions expire, a Bentley colleague will

contact you to explain the migration options to convert to a SELECT subscription.

Trial Versions

If no licences or dongles are detected, the application will run in trial mode for a period of 15 days. During this period the application will run with full functionality however a “Trial Use Only” watermark will be displayed on screen and on all printouts. Once the trial period has expired, the application will no longer run. We will no longer be supplying Demo versions and instead will supply full functionality Trial versions.

Splash Screens

All Applications will now display a new Bentley splash screen as follows:

With the new splash screen, the first line indicates the SELECT Suite License that is in use, while the second line indicates the Application that has been started. Legacy Dongle users will only get the name of the Application and will not get a SELECT license displayed.

End User License Agreement

Our End User License Agreement (EULA) has changed in this release, and is now the standard Bentley EULA. A separate beta EULA is shown for the beta test versions.

Installation Location Defaults

We’re now following the Bentley standards and our application is no longer stored in C:\Program Files\Maxsurf 18\ like it was previously. Instead we now install our applications alongside our other Bentley applications in:

C:\Program Files\Bentley\Engineering\Multiframe 15 V8i\ for 32-bit application on 32-bit machines or 64-bit applications on 64-bit machines, or

C:\Program Files (x86)\Bentley\Engineering\Multiframe 15 V8i\ for 32-bit version on 64-bit machines.

This change is also reflected in the Start Menu Group defaults, our applications are now available by selecting:

Start -> All Programs -> Bentley Engineering -> Multiframe 15 V8i

Multiframe

The following features have been modified or added to Multiframe in this release.

Global Patch Distributed Load

Multiframe allows loading on patches to be applied relative to the direction of the global coordinate system or relative to the direction of the local patch coordinate system. Loads can be applied either constantly or linearly. A global distributed load is a load which is distributed along all or part of a patch, and acts in a direction parallel to one of the reference x, y or z axes. To apply a global distributed load to a patch

Select the patch or patches to be loaded

Choose Global Patch Dist'd Load from the Load menu or short cut menu

A dialog box will appear with icons to indicate the shape and direction of loading.

Click on the icon which shows the shape of the load

In a two dimensional view, there will be four icons indicating the four possible loading directions. In the 3D view, all six possible icons will be displayed with the patterns in the icons showing the direction of the action of the loads. Each icon has a pattern with lines running parallel to the direction of action.

Click on the icon which shows the direction in which the load is to act

Type in values for the magnitude of the load at each end

Select global or projected area in which to apply the load

Multiframe 15.04 V8i ReadMe

Page 10

The axis of the load determines how the load is distributed along the patches. With Global or Projected areas, the magnitude of a global distributed load refers to its load per square unit where the area is measured perpendicular to the direction of the load. This means a vertical distributed load applied to an inclined patch will apply a total load equivalent to the magnitude of the load times the horizontal projected area of the patch. For loads applied in patch local area, the magnitude of the distributed load refers to its load per square unit where the unit is the actual area of the load measured along the patch.

Click on the OK button

Note that when working in dialog boxes, you can use the Tab key to move from one editing box to the next. There is no need to enter '+' or '-' signs for your load magnitudes. The directions are determined from the icon that you select. When you enter positions of loads in the patch loading dialogs or the Data window, you can enter calculation expressions for the position. For example, if you want a load to start at one third patch sides you can enter L/3 for the left distances (Lx and/or Ly) of start position. If you enter this in a load dialog, this expression will be calculated for all the selected patches. This means you can apply this load to a number of patches of different dimensions simultaneously. You can also enter more complicated expressions such as 2*L/3 or 1.35+(L-4)/2. The variable L is always available and contains the length of the patch side, the syntax of the expressions is the same as that used in the CalcSheet.

Local Patch Distributed Load

A local distributed load is a load which is distributed along all or part of the patch and acts in a direction either normal (shear) or tangential (axial) to the patch. To apply a local distributed load to a patch

Select the patch or patches to be loaded

Choose Local Dist'd Load from the Load menu or short cut menu

A dialog box will appear with icons to indicate the shape of the load and its direction relative to the patch.

Patch Orthotropic Material

Multiframe extends its support to orthotropic materials for plates. This will be done through “Advanced material button” in patch property dialog window. To apply orthotropic material to a patch

Select the patch to be edited

Choose Patch Properties menu or short cut menu

In material group, click “Advanced” button and a dialog box will appear

with advanced material property

File Import/Export to Struclink

Import from Struclink

Multiframe can import files from STAAD and Prosteel using the Struclink (*.struclink) data format To import a Struclink file

Choose Struclink… from the Import sub menu

Upon choosing a file, Multiframe will automatically detect if it originated from STAAD or Prosteel. If sections saved in that file are from a country section library different from the Multiframe section library, a prompt will appear asking to continue or not. Even with the correct section library open it is possible that not all sections will be successfully mapped. If this is the case a warning message will be shown.

Export to Stuclink

It is possible to export Multiframe models to the Struclink format that is compatible with STAAD and Prosteel. To export to Struclink,

Choose Struclink from the Export sub menu

After selecting a file name a dialog will appear to choose if the export is to Prosteel or to STAAD. After clicking OK the export will start.

AISC 2010

The updated (from 2005) AISC2010 code (both LRFD and ASD) has been added to Steel Designer. Those eligible for AISC2005 will also have access to AISC2010. The methods of operation for AISC2010 are identical to the 2005 version. See the Steel Designer manual for more details.

Wind Load Case

AS1170:2011

The pressure coefficients for the AS1170 option in the Wind Load Case have been updated to latest 2011 version of the code

Distributed Member Loads

The Wind Load case now uses distributed member loads if there is a variation in wind speed along the length of a member (previously the velocity at mid-point was used).

Internal Pressure Loads

It is now possible to apply internal pressure loads (normal to the patch/panels outwards from the centre of the model) to the whole model with the user defined pressure coefficient, Cp,i.

External Pressure Loads

Radio buttons have been added to allow the user to choose between the External Pressure coefficients defined in Column 1 or 2 in Tables 5.3(A), 5.3(B) and Table D8 of AS1170:2011.

Sinusoidal Waveform Waterline

The option to apply a sinusoidal waveform waterline has been added to the Buoyancy and Hydrostatic Load Cases. To do this, select Sinusoidal Waveform Waterline when adding a Buoyancy or Hydrostatic load case and define the following variables:

Wave Length

Enter a value for the wave length.

Wave Height

Enter a value for the wave height.

Trough Co-ordinates

Enter values for the wave trough co-ordinates.

Wave Direction

Enter the wave direction. The wave is applied horizontally in the x-z plane. A value of zero applied the water current along the x-axis. Positive angles of water current direction represent a rotation anti-clockwise.
