2012 was the beginning of an exciting new season for Ignite with regards to staff.

During the summer we said goodbye to faithful Interns, Hannah

Preece-Davies, Dom Phair and Mak Adorkorbidji who all worked

hard in delivering our biggest project to date -IgniteHope 2012.

Cerys Gemma who was also an intern last year continued her

work with Ignite into the Autumn term.

At the end of the summer Helen Cocks, our Operations Manager

here at Ignite for four years, retired. Helen faithfully served

Ignite and transformed the office. We are so thankful for all Helen bought to Ignite and

pray she has a very happy retirement.

Lucy Patterson, who already worked at Ignite became Operations Manager after

Helen’s retirement, and we welcomed Jess Morgan as our new Administrator in

September (For a day in the life of Jess, go to page 22).

September also saw the arrival of our new interns,—we welcomed Hannah

Woodbridge and Luc Dexter to our internship working with

Ruth Probert on our

Re:Gen project based in Tremorfa and other office

activity.

Two of our team, Meg & Mark Beacher, were

blessed with the birth of Jonah Ted in July—

we love seeing the Ignite family grow!

Statistics cannot tell the full story but

over 150 young people made a first time

decision for Jesus. Many more committed

themselves to Him. Dozens came forward

for specific prayer and that was only in

the evening meetings at the big top. Add

to this six hundred young people

committed for the weekend to deliver

8490 hours of community action and acts

of kindness throughout South Wales and

you begin to get the idea that this is an

initiative that God really likes!

Building on previous projects in 2008 and 2010,

IgniteHope 2012 was simply the biggest

initiative that Ignite had ever being involved

with. At times scary, challenging but always

exhilarating it was incredible to be on

the journey. Much of the day to day

planning was undertaken by Ruth

Probert and the team of volunteer

interns. That they could pull off

something so significant was incredibly

impressive.

In addition to teams from churches

throughout South Wales we were also

joined by a large group from New Life

Church, Colorado and an International

Team from YWAM. It is fair to say their

engagement was exemplary and

showed a real mission heart.

Each day began with worship and

teaching in the tented village at

Sophia Gardens before teams

travelled throughout the region to

do at least 5 hours work. Schemes

included fun days, sports coaching,

litter picking, graffiti removal,

decorating, gardening and much

more. They partnered with park

ra n g e rs , C a rd i f f Fo o d b a n k

volunteers, local churches, South

Wales Police officers, community

groups and schools.

Early evening teams travelled back to Sophia

Gardens to enjoy great food, entertainment on

the festival stage, sports, activities, cafes and

general socialising. At 7.30pm everyone headed

to the big top for incredible worship from the

Ignite band and anointed preaching from the

likes of Roy Crowne (Hope), Dai Hankey (Ignite

& Hill City Church), Rob Parsons (Care for the

Family) & Rachel Gardener (Romance

Academy).

IgniteHope has been able to kick-start many

churches & youth groups into long-term,

sustainable programmes of word & action

missions. We believe this to be the “high-

water” mark and therefore a great time to

finish!

Gary writes…

I visited Rajahmundry in July 2012 with long-term supporter Linda Murray and City

Temple member Adrian Allabarton. In addition to encouraging Prasad and the Gateway

team we wanted to visit all aspects of the ministry that we support as well as

undertake some specific tasks.

We spent a good amount of time at the“Come Together Compound” where the school and

children’s home are situated. We were able to commission a new borehole and water

filtration plant to ensure a plentiful supply of fresh drinking water for the children.

Linda had given money previously in memory of her late husband, Kelvin to build a computer suite. This time

we were able to take with us 6 top of the range Mac Book Pros. John Brown, who works for Apple in the USA,

donated them. We also bought a printer/scanner/photocopier and fitted a wifi system. They now have a suite

that truly is top of the range.

India 2012

Page 7: 2012 version 2

New uniforms, bags and sheets were bought for the children who live in the

Gateway Children’s home and we were able to buy invertors to secure the

electricity supply, a rice grinder and many more essential supplies. Much of

the finance for these items was supplied by Mike Harris and Neil Moody.

In addition we preached the gospel in churches throughout the region

including at the congregation based at the leprosy colony we support. We

also led a regional pastors conference.

Nigel lead a team from Cardiff City Temple in November. Although they also did many similar

activities, they specifically went to lead major conferences for the Gateway pastors and preach

at 2 large evangelistic rallies called “Blessing Festivals”. They were also able to buy four

buffalo to provide milk for the children in the home and school. They saw many people respond

to Jesus for the first time and pastors equipped for the coming year.

#Reach took place in April & November 2012 and

what an encouragement. A little different

to the average Ignite event, we kicked

off with some great worship led by the Fuse Band

after which Dai Hankey spoke inspirationally about just

how important the message of the Gospel is, how life changing it is and how we

need to be confident in sharing the Gospel with those around us. Two seminars

gave us food for thought, one group learning about how we can best use social

media to evangelise; putting up Bible verses on Twitter and Facebook, choosing

what we say wisely so we are always bearing good witness for Jesus. All really

helpful stuff. The other seminar looked at how we can better share out story.

Sometimes we think that one person’ s testimony is more important or exciting

than ours but we all have been saved equally

and it is such a strong message to others when

we speak about our personal experiences with

our Saviour.

So the moral of the story is this: Wales lost to

Samoa on the same night as we were learning

about Jesus’ ongoing Victory . We are ALWAYS on

the winning team and God is always on the hunt

for new players!

Spree Wales is an activity

weekend in Llanelli that is

organised by a partnership

of youth organisations. Ignite

has hosted the teenage

spiritual programme for a

number of years.

The weekend began with torrential rain which made the venue very wet when the

hundreds of young people crammed into it. Throughout the weekend we had the Fuse

Band (average age 17) leading worship. The speaker on the Friday evening was Lois

Seco. Some will remember that we have known Lois since she was 12. She worked on

many of our summer teams before interning with us. Now married, she is an artist who is

one of the youth and young adult leaders at Cardiff

City Temple. Others included Gary Smith, Ruth Probert

and former Leadership Academy Graduate, Luke

Moreno. We were privileged not only to lead many into a

deeper experience of the Lord but a large number to

Jesus for the very first

time. It was also a great

event for Gary as his

daughter Beci lead

worship and his son Ben

was one of the

presenters.

What a way to spend a birthday!

2012 saw Gary reach the big 50. In fitting with many major events in his recent

history, he managed not to be in the UK when it took place!

Norway

Throughout the touring life of Rebecca St James she has

had many members of her family as band and crew. Her

brothers Joel and Luke have formed a band 4 King &

Country whose debut album has made a big impact in

the USA. When an opportunity to be a part of a festival in

Norway came through it was slightly unfortunate that it

coincided with Gary’s 50th

birthday. With a very

understanding wife and children who were just annoyed they were not on

the road with him, Gary headed off to road manage for the 2 shows.

Although the festival was in June, there were almost freezing conditions

when the band took to the stage to a capacity audience. They were

incredibly well received after giving not only an amazing performance that

night but having built up a small fan base through playing in the local high

school the day before. The headliner that night was Classic Petra. The fact

that Gary remembered them from the first time around was somehow fitting

as this was the last day he was 49. A headlining concert in Bergen was

followed by the most amazing seafood 50th

birthday celebration hosted by

good friends Jan & Carina ……

Gary was able to reflect on the goodness of God that He provided such

incredible memories and gospel opportunities.

Gary flew home for a total of 14 hours before flying out to Japan

Japan

For almost the whole time that Big Ideas/Ignite has been operating, Gary

has been working with Rebecca St James ensuring that her international

live tours visit as many places as possible and impact many lives. Well

after 15 years and hundreds of shows in front of many thousands of people Rebecca decided

that 2012 would be her last year of touring. With this in mind Gary was determined to take her

ministry to a nation that had not experienced it before. An invitation came through for Rebecca to

perform & speak on a US airbase in Japan. This seemed like a great way to bow out. So at the

end of May, Gary left from Cardiff, Rebecca left from LA and various other musicians including

long-time musical director, Fred Williams and support artist, Charmaine left from Nashville for

the long flight to Tokyo. During the time there as well as sampling some of the best sushi, the

team performed 4 concerts that were greatly received.

Ruth & Geraint Probert

We have believed for a number of years that God was

calling us to set up an incarnational community in a needy

area of the city. So much of what happens in ministry is

through relationship and when we found that one of our

Street Pastors, Bart Geere and his wife Sharon, had moved

to Tremorfa we sensed that this was a definite Kingdom

connection. We began to explore with them and the church

what a partnership might look like and Re:Gen Tremorfa was

born!

The project accelerated to a different level when Ruth Probert and her husband

Geraint sensed God was calling them to move to the estate.

Page 13: 2012 version 2

Bart & Sharon Geere

Following IgniteHope we were exploring what we as an organization should do to ensure the

focus was kept on sustainable words and deeds missions. One obvious contribution we could

make was to base our intern team in Tremorfa. This began in September by Luc Dexter and

Hannah Woodridge along with Cerys Gemma ensuring that as well as presence on the estate we

are also able to provide a number of key services including;

A Youth Club

Tots & Toast — a drop in facility for young single mums

A Discipleship Group

A Weekly Prayer Meeting

Sunday Club

The team also took a group of young people away for a residential weekend

2012 was another great year for Cardiff Street Pastors. The sponsorship

that was offered in 2011 by Admiral Insurance was extended, ensuring

not only the ongoing survival but also development of the scheme. With

additional generous support from SA Brains, churches, individuals and

businesses we have been able to concentrate on doing the job!

We now have over 50 fully trained Street Pastors. A number were

commissioned at a special service in Cardiff City Temple where the

guest speaker was Peter Vaughan, Chief Constable of South Wales

Police.

In recent years all types of crime, violence, robbery, sexual assault

etc. have been reducing in Cardiff. We have been confident that this

has been in no small way due to the introduction of Street Pastors.

Sometimes it is difficult to prove this: however the police analyst looked at the

reports and discovered that in a 6 month period

Street Pastors had:

- assisted in 569 incidents of which 57% were

stated to be drunk!

- disposed of1665 bottles or glasses

(all of which were potential

weapons)

- given away 670 bottles of water

- distributed 73 space blankets

Dinner

Page 15: 2012 version 2

There are many great stories that come out of the scheme but there was one worthy of

special note:

A call was received from the camera room for the Street Pastors to attend Cardiff Central

Railway Station. On arrival the team found the British Transport Police dealing with around 150

French-speaking Africans. They were all ages and in some confusion. The story was pieced

together:- They had been brought to Barry Island by coach for an open-air baptism service

on the beach. When they had finished the coaches had left without them. They were now

stranded in the city centre having got the train to Cardiff to discover there were no ongoing

connections until the next day. The joint operation progressed to another level as more

Street Pastors were called in, an elder of City Temple was called and the whole party was

taken to the church for refuge. No time was wasted by the hosts in providing hot drinks and

the African congregation used the opportunity to continue in a night of prayer and praise. At

around 6am cars began to ferry the people back to the station so they could get back to

London. This was a good news story that could so easily have gone wrong were it not for

the Cardiff Street Pastors.

Relationships with the licensees and club owners continue to develop. Many

attended the Annual Street Pastor Gala Dinner where we were delighted to

honour Giovanni Malacrino. Not only did he provide some wonderful prizes for

the auction, he and his son Gian-Luca also supplied

the scheme with a years supply of water. To celebrate

the 30th

anniversary of the opening of his restaurant, he

has agreed to feed the Street Pastors every night

before they go on shift!

In early March of 2012,

Nigel James visited

Ignite Liberia and spoke at youth leader training events in 3

different regions of the country. Working alongside National

Director Emmanuel Jonah and Programme Director Stephen

Wonbenyakeh, Nigel was able to encourage a good number

of the volunteers working as Ignite volunteers across the

country. Ignite has a strong network throughout the country of Liberia and leaders were

reminded of the usefulness of the Ignite Declaration and also given some practical youth

ministry ‘tools’ to place in their toolkit. Nigel was also able to preach at Emmanuel and

Stephen ’s home church on the outskirts of the capital city, Monrovia, and spend time

sharing vision with Emmanuel and his wife Wintee, and Stephen and his wife Florence.

For 12 days in October, Gary with the assistance of Luke Moreno travelled the

length and breadth of the UK and Ireland with Dr Tony Campolo and Graham

Kendrick for an evening of worship, challenge and commitment with the major

intention of getting the generous Christians to sponsor children and free them

from poverty.

Gary originated this event with Compassion a number of

years ago and subsequently there has been around 25

dates. On the 2012 tour over 800 children were released

from poverty.

In addition to the Ignite boys the team consisted of Tony &

Peggy Campolo, Graham Kendrick, Legendary drummer &

percussionist Terl Bryant and bass player extraordinaire

Simon Dennis. Every date we added one of the amazing

staff members from Compassion UK to the merry band.

It is an honour and a privilege

for Ignite to be involved in

such a significant Kingdom

initiative.

Having looked back at all 2012 held

for Ignite, we eagerly look forward to

2013.

Here at Ignite, we believe God is al-

ways doing a new thing (Isaiah 43 v

19) and we want to reflect that in our

ministry.

On this page we want to give you an

insight into where we believe we are

heading this year. We believe these

plans and projects are God inspired

and we commit them into his hands.

We would appreciate your prayers

and support at the beginning of this

exciting year.

As you have already read, 2012 was an

amazing year for Street Pastors and

we have no doubt that 2013 will be the

same.

We will be recruiting a new intake of

Street Pastors this year, and we ’ re

already looking forward to the Charity

Dinner in December.

As the scheme continues to grow and

go from strength to strength, we’

would appreciate your prayers for the

safety of our Street Pastors as they

serve on the streets of Cardiff every

weekend.

#NotOnMyWatch is the new initiative launched this month

by Ignite. This new project aims to raise the issue of

people trafficking and slavery to young people,

particularly those based in Wales.

It is a shocking statistic that there are more people being

kept as slaves today than there was at the time of the

abolition of slavery by the USA in 1865. It is estimated that

over 27,000,000 people are in slavery, bonded labour or

are being used as pawns (i.e. someone given held as

security for a debt). That is almost the equivalent of 50%

of the population of the United Kingdom.

Human trafficking is the 2nd fastest growing criminal

industry in the world. This involves people moving

others, often against their will to other countries for

profit. We would be naive to assume this does not

happen in Wales. Indeed reports have suggested that

there could be 600+ women who have been smuggled

into Wales who are now acting as sex workers.

Evidence is very difficult to obtain as understandably

not only is the industry very secretive but victims

themselves are reluctant to report their conditions as

they fear not only their "masters" but also the

authorities as they are most likely in the UK illegally .

#NotOnMyWatch seeks to

engage young people with

the issue so not only will

they be informed but also so

that they can become

modern day abolistionists

ensuring the Wales becomes

a "traffic free" zone. This is

not just a human rights issue

it is a key discipleship issue.

Page 20: 2012 version 2

Another key initiative new for 2013 is Mission Academy. This, we feel,

is part of the legacy of IgniteHope. Mission Academy is a learning

community that facilitates young people to run their own mission

projects over a two-year period. The idea is to encourage, equip

and release them to have a go at words and deeds mission in the

communities they are in. There are 2 weekends away per year to

focus on generating ideas, planning what they could do, having

t i m e s o f t e a c h i n g , w o r s h i p a n d f u n !

We believe it will give young people an opportunity to grow, learn

and make the difference alongside other young people in Cardiff.

The Mission Academy is not just happening in South Wales. It is

happening all over the UK and is in partnership with many Christian

organisations such as The Message, Soul Survivor, YFC, Ignite etc.

For more information on what Mission Academy is go to www.hope-

revolution.com COMING SOON in 2013

Page 21: 2012 version 2

This is a key project for Ignite moving forward. It is our

aim to move around 12 people onto the estate to be

salt and light in the community. The call is not for full

-time, paid workers but for students, employees and

families to commit to be based there. The minimum

requirement is that these passionate Christians will

agree to do at least 4 hours work per week serving

the community, be part of a church fellowship and

attend the monthly team meeting. The next batch of

Re:Gen interns will commit 80% of their time to Tremorfa in 2013.

For more information about these opportunities email Ruth Probert at

As the Ignite Administrator I am

usually one of the first people into

the office where I am welcomed by a

feeling of calm peppered with

anticipation for what the day will

bring. One of the greatest things

about working at Ignite is that no day

is ever the same. Yes, you have the

staples of the day that have to get

done but God is always moving and

working and we go with Him.

At the start of each and every day we

commit it to God through prayer, I am

incredibly blessed to work in a place

that values the importance of the

centrality of the Saviour and

acknowledges that all our work is

meaningless unless His mighty hand

guides it. This is such a significant

part of the day for us, having the

chance to hear testimony to

answered prayer, break through and

opportunity and to acknowledge that

we are part of an Ignite family that

spreads across the globe united by

our Father and His commission for

Kingdom expansion.

It ’s my job to balance the books, which in

and of itself doesn ’ t sound very thrilling

but I prefer to look at it as a tangible way

of seeing God ’ s goodness and

graciousness. I have the privileged of

getting the inside track, witnessing day

by day the blessing He is pouring out on

different ministries serving a wide group

of people with varying needs, all for His

glory and purposes. What could be more

exciting!

Today is a Tuesday, which is the best day

of the week because it’s the day that

most of the team are in the office. Every

week we meet together and worship God

through music and the study of His

word. Gary shares with us about what

God is laying on His heart and we pray for

vision and wisdom to take what are small

seeds and to grow them into mighty oak

trees by the power of His Holy Spirit.

There is a space for us to praise through

music, to lift up the name of Jesus,

declaring that He is Saviour and Lord of

all. This is one of my favourite parts of

the day. We finish the session with prayer

points for items in the news or requests

t h a t w e ’ v e h a d f r o m o u r

international Ignite brothers and

sisters, for each other but most of all

in giving thanks to God that He

chooses to take us as we are and

partners with us in His Kingdom work.

For me at least Tuesday is wrapped

up with a team lunch, we eat, chat,

laugh and just have a good time being

together building relationship and

community. It is a wonderful way to

end the day. I

am blessed

to spend

most of my

days among

some of the

m o s t

c o m m i t t e d

and Godly

people I know

and have the

honour of

calling it: my

job.
