YOUR COMMUNITY CENTER

The ERJCC is your community center. Membership is open to people of all races, reli-gions and ethnic backgrounds. It is a place where dedicated volunteers and professional staff work together to help shape the foundation and guide the direction for the ERJCC. Get involved! Join us for a class, exercise your mind and body, enjoy a cultural event or holiday program, or become a volunteer. It is all here for you at the ERJCC – the possibilities are endless. The Evelyn Rubenstein Jewish Community Center is a beneficiary of the United Way of Greater Houston and The United Jewish Campaign.

ERJCC MISSION STATEMENTThe mission of the Evelyn Rubenstein Jewish Community Center of Houston is to develop and strengthen Jewish identity, foster Jewish values, and enrich the Jewish community and the greater community.

MEMBERSHIP

Lauren Carstensen – Director of Member Services 713.729.3200, ext. 3221

The ERJCC is a membership-based organization, and annual membership is required to participate in most ERJCC activities and programs. A variety of membership types are available to suit your needs. ERJCC Fitness Center and Boniuk Tennis Center memberships are also available at the Joe Weingarten Building. Annual dues are payable by check, credit card or monthly through EFT bank draft. A temporary membership card will be issued for two weeks upon joining. New members are asked to return to the Membership Office to take a picture for their permanent photo ID membership card. These cards are required for activity registration and as identification for entrance to the recreational facilities, Fitness Center, Tennis Center, and Aquatics Park. After the first year, membership is automatically renewed each year, for those paying by EFT, unless a written request is received by the Membership Office. Your ERJCC membership card is recognized at the various Houston locations and at many of the 275 Jewish Community Centers in the United States, Israel and Canada.

For many homebound seniors,

a daily hot meal and a friendly

face are not commonplace.

What most of us take for granted

is truly a luxury for many frail

elderly. One program in Houston

has the capability of providing

these two necessities in a sen-

ior’s life—the Meals-on-Wheels

program.

Won’t you please get involved?

BAC Meet the Teachers | Sunday, August 19 | 10:00 – 11:00 AM

This fall, the ERJCC will be offering 4-week Mini Sessions of

our most popular children’s classes! Available to both our

members and prospective members, the Mini Session gives

your child the opportunity to “try out” a class before making a

semester-long commitment. If your child loves the class (and

we are certain they will), you can then elect to register your

child for the remainder of the semester.

WE HOPE THAT YOU TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THIS AMAZING OPPORTUNITY!

This Fall Program Guide has an at a glance listing of all

children’s classes that offer a Mini Session. See page 4 & 5.

EXPLORE JUDAISM ON YOUR OWN TERMS

In Pirkei Avot 2:5, Hillel says “Do not say, when I have leisure time

I will study, perhaps that time will not come.” At the ERJCC’s Center for Jewish Living and Learning we say “now is the time to

start your Jewish journey, on your own terms.”

For sixteen years, the Melton program has brought hundreds of adults together to study Jewish practice, ideas, ethics, and history in our Core Curriculum. Upon completing this two-year program, participants received a certificate from Hebrew University and only then were they eligible to take our Scholars Courses on specific topics. Four years ago, the CJLL introduced the Kulanu program, an opportunity to take four to six week mini-courses if the Melton courses, which ran year-long, did not fit your schedule.

Beginning this fall, the CJLL’s adult Jewish learning program is getting a face lift. For the first time Melton Scholars Courses will be open to everyone without the pre-requisite of completing the Core Courses. In addition, participants have the opportunity to register for a single Scholars Course.

THE MELTON CORE CURRICULUM, which gives you the great-est immersion in Jewish Study will continue to be facilitated by outstanding faculty. In this program, you have the opportunity to explore over 120 topics of Jewish interest including the meaning behind Shabbat observance, the ethical issues surrounding in vitro fertilization, the history of the Zionist Movement and our tradi-tion’s understanding of what it means to be the “Chosen People.” This core curriculum is what has made the Florence Melton Adult Mini-School the largest and most successful adult education pro-gram of its kind, with tens of thousands of graduates and schools across North America, South Africa, Australia, and the United Kingdom.

THE MELTON SCHOLARS CURRICULUM has shorter courses and focuses on a specific topic. These courses can be taken independently, but also compliment the strong background one receives in the Core Curriculum.

Finally, the CJLL’s KULANU MINI-COURSES are an introduction to Jewish learning for the uninitiated. In these courses you can get your feet wet in Jewish study, until you decide which Jewish Journey is right for you.

For more information, contact Nomi Barancik at 713.729.3200 ext. 3288 or [email protected]

At the age of seventeen, his teenage years affect everyone in his family. A plan is devised to “get rid” of Joseph. But what really happens to him and who ends up selling him? WEBINAR LECTURES AT THE ERJCC

Shabbat: Creating A Meaningful Atmosphere with Ancient Ritual LawsMonday, October 15 at 7:00 PM—8:30 PM This session will look at the overarching themes that undergird Biblical and Rabbinic thinking about Shabbat and explore how the details of practice aim to advance a larger vision.

Kashrut: Toward Sensible, Meaningful, Contemporary Jewish Food ChoicesMonday, November 19 at 7:00 PM—8:30 PM This session will seek to understand the broad picture of motivations and frameworks for eating differently than we might otherwise without the Jewish tradition.

Inclusion: The Halakhic Case for EgalitarianismMonday, December 10 at 7:00 PM—8:30 PM If much of the Jewish past assumed that many supporting roles were delegated to women in order to allow men to be fully present, how can an egalitarian world ensure full presence for some without dividing roles along gender lines alone? We will attempt to address this difficult and contentious topic with sensitivity and honesty.

What is a Jew?Monday, January 14 at 7:00 PM—8:30 PM In this session, we will look at sources that grapple with the precise definition of Jewishness. What are the ramifications for contemporary policy in the Jewish community?

Our program provides multi-disciplinary intervention in a highly structured, language based, creative and nurturing environment within a Jewish setting. Families are collaborative partners in the ongoing observation, treatment and education of our students. Children have the unique opportunity to develop communication, play and social skills with typical peer groups at a traditional preschool campus.

NITE OWLS ADULTThe Nite Owls is an amazing group started over 40 years ago as a social group for Jewish teens with special needs. The group stayed together over the years and has grown into a special needs group for all adults in the community. There are currently 20 members, some of whom were part of the original teen group. The Owls participate in many activities throughout the year including arts and crafts, athletics, cooking, yoga, Jewish and secular holiday celebrations and, of course, field trips. Field trips include going to an Astros game, hay rides, mini golf, bowl-ing, IMAX movies and much more. The program also allows for families of the group members to interact with each other and form a support network. Through community involvement, the group hopes to decrease the stigma surrounding people with special needs.Instructor: Eric Bishop
