back towinning ways

It had been a long time since CSU-Pueblo was a winner. For a team that hadn’t sniffed the playoffs since 2006 and hadn’t won a playoff game since 1999, a culture change was undertaken in 2011 by new coach and former ThunderWolf, Jen Gomez.

The result was the ThunderWolves’ first winning season in five years as well as the biggest intangible of all – they learned how to win.

In 2012, the time has come to not only win, but to dominate. Boasting one of the strongest incoming classes in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference as well as a solid group of experienced returners,

The time is now!

Colorado State University-Pueblo’s Massari Arena is con-sidered one of the finest indoor facilities in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference and one of the top Division II arenas in the nation.

Massari Arena was re-opened in 2008 following a a two-year, $12 million renova-tion that expanded not only the arena, but the Sam Jones Sports Center, which includes a wrestling room, aerobics room, strength-training facility, racquetball and squash courts, swimming facility, athletic department offices, and classrooms for the Univer-sity’s Exercise Science department.

Massari Arena seats 3,900 fans and is the home of CSU-Pueblo’s men’s and women’s basketball, wrestling and volleyball programs. The arena includes one section of premium chairback seating and a luxury box overlooking the arena, dubbed “The Wolf Pack Room”

Massari is also connected to CSU-Pueblo Student Recreation Center, which includes two gymnasiums, a climbing wall, indoor run-ning track, and access to racquetball courts, cardio/weight room, and more. Membership to the Recreation Center is free for all CSU-Pueblo full-time students.

The arena has been the site of four national championship events (NAIA gymnastics in 1982, NCAA Division II wrestling in 1994, 1998 and 2012), the latest of which is pictured above.

2Nd SEASON • SOUTHERN COLORAdO (‘01)

Colorado State University-Pueblo named former CSU-Pueblo assistant coach and volleyball player, Jen Gomez, head volleyball coach on December 22, 2010.

In her first season coaching the Pack, she promptly led CSU-Pueblo to its first winning season and RMAC playoff berth since 2006 as the ThunderWolves turned in a 15-13 record.

Gomez, formerly Jen Salmans, was an assistant coach with the ThunderWolves from 2000 to 2004 after playing for the Pack from 1998 to 1999. She been the head coach at Oklahoma City Univer-sity since 2006 where she took over an OCU volleyball program that had been dormant from 1981 to 2005. Gomez immediately turned the Stars into a winner, going 26-8 and making an NAIA regional tournament appearance.

Over her five seasons at the helm of OCU, Gomez was 134-60, leading the Stars to the 2010 Sooner Athletic Conference title and the school’s first ever NAIA Championships appearance. She has led the Stars to at least the NAIA regionals three of her five seasons at Oklahoma City, including four 20-win seasons and two 30-win seasons. She also coached the program’s first ever All-American, Xiaoting Ma, who was named All-American three times and earned first-team honors in 2010.

Prior to being named head coach at Oklahoma City, she was the assistant volleyball coach at Angelo State (Tex.) University for two seasons, and was the assistant coach at CSU-Pueblo prior to that. In all, she has a total of 11 seasons of collegiate coaching experience.

As a player at CSU-Pueblo, she was an All-RMAC selection, as well as the CSU-Pueblo (then-University of Southern Colorado) Female Athlete of the Year in 2000. Prior to CSU-Pueblo, she was an NJCAA All-American at Garden City Community College in Garden City, Kan.

Page 8: 2012 CSU-Pueblo Volleyball Media Guide

Gomez, a 2001 graduate of CSU-Pueblo with a degree in exercise science, achieved her Master’s in health and human perfor-mance from Fort Hays State University in 2005. Prior to receiving her degree from CSU-Pueblo, she received an associate’s in science from Garden City Community Col-lege.

Jen and her husband, Chanc, have one daughter, Micah. The family resides in Pueblo.

To a casual observer, CSU-Pueblo’s 2011 volleyball season was ho-hum at best.

It finished the season two games above .500 with a 15-13 record and was bounced from Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference playoffs after just one game.

But to those who have followed the program for years, observed its ups and (mostly) downs, 2011 might as well have been an RMAC championship season.

Under first-year head coach Jen Gomez, job one was re-versing a culture of losing that had permeated for a decade. She had a group of seniors that had won just 24 games in three seasons and hadn’t really learned to win.

With that group at the core, CSU-Pueblo was in first place in the RMAC West Division for most of the season, and may have been able to snag a few more wins if starting outside hit-ter and leading attacker Janae Heiser wasn’t lost for the season on a knee injury midway through the season.

Gomez has the pedigree and a track record – already. En-tering just her seventh season as a collegiate head coach, her

career winning per-centage of .671 already has her ranked second in the RMAC among active coaches. But that figure certainly comes with a caveat, as most of it was accomplished at NAIA Oklahoma City Uni-versity.

Additionally, her CSU-Pueblo coaching record of 15-13 (.536) also puts her second all-time in terms of career win percentage, only behind the iconic Jessie Banks at .710.

ST. MARY’S (CA) (‘02)Jordan Willis is entering his sec-

ond season as assistant volleyball coach at CSU-Pueblo.

In his first year with the ThunderWolves, he helped coach the Pack to its first winning record and RMAC playoff appear-ance in five years as the team went 15-13 and finished 7th in the RMAC.

Prior to CSU-Pueblo, Willis was an assistant at Texas A&M-Kingsville from 2007-10, where he helped lead the Javelinas to two Lone Star Conference Tournament appearances.

He came to A&M-Kingsville after serving as the Coordina-tor of Club Volleyball at his alma mater, St. Mary’s of Califor-nia. He coached both the men’s and women’s club teams and led the men’s team to a No. 19 national ranking in Division II Club Volleyball.

He also served as head coach at Ygnacio Valley High School in Concord, Calif. for four years and worked at Pinnacle Vol-leyball Club in Walnut Creek, Calif. for a year.

He received his undergraduate degree from St. Mary’s in 2002 and his master’s degree in 2006. He volunteered for Ame-riCorps in New York City for a year, working with youth at an inner-city high school.

Willis was a four year starting setter on the St. Mary’s Club Volleyball team. He was also a three-time all-Northern Cali-fornia Collegiate Volleyball League selection. While an under-grad, he coached two years at St. Mary College High School.

CSU-PUEBLO (‘12)Former CSU-Pueblo volleyball

player Janae Heiser is entering her first season as a member of the CSU-Pueblo coaching staff.

Heiser played volleyball at CSU-Pueblo from 2008-11, start-ing in 2009 and 2011. In 2009, she led the team with 232 kills and 23 aces as the squad’s outside hitter. In 2011, she returned to the starting lineup under new head coach, Jen Gomez, and was one of the ThunderWolves’ top players before a knee injury ended her sea-son. Her kills per game figure of 3.18 was the team’s best and she boasted an attack percentage of .229 as the ThunderWolves made their first trip back to the RMAC playoffs in five seasons.

A 2008 graduate of Standley Lake High School in Westminster, Colo., where she was a three-time all-conference selection, she was a mass communications major at CSU-Pueblo.
