On behalf of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, I wish to welcome you to the 2011 WIAC Women’s Tennis Championship. This weekend, you will have the oppor-

Welcome to the 2011 WIAC Women’s Tennis Championship
2011 WIAC Women’s Tennis Championship PreviewBy Matt Stanek, WIAC Assistant Commissioner for Media Relations
University of Wisconsin-Whitewater will aim for a fifth straight title at the 2011 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Con-ference (WIAC) Women’s Tennis Championship that will be held Oct. 22-23 at Nielsen Tennis Stadium in Madison, Wis. The 40th gathering of league adversaries will also decide six singles champions and three sets of doubles winners.
The team title will be determined by using a combination of the regular-season dual meet standings and the WIAC championship results. The finish in the regular-season standings accounts for one-third of the criteria, while the confer-ence championship accounts for the remaining two-thirds.
Point distribution following the dual meet rotation included: UW-Whitewater (6-0) (7 points), UW-Eau Claire (4-2) (5 points), UW-La Crosse (4-2) (5 points), UW-Oshkosh (4-2) (5 points), UW-River Falls (2-4) (3 points), UW-Stevens Point (1-5) (2 points) and UW-Stout (0-6) (1 point).
The initial day of competition at the conference event will consist of the first two rounds of doubles matches followed by the first round of singles matches. The second day of the championship will feature the final two rounds of singles matches followed by the last round of doubles matches.
The top four teams (following the conclusion of the WIAC championship) will advance to a team tournament that will determine the conference’s automatic qualifier to the NCAA Division III Championship. The team tournament will be held at the site of the overall conference champion the weekend prior to the NCAA championship next spring.
UW-Whitewater has captured 11 conference titles, while UW-La Crosse owns 15 and UW-Eau Claire 12.
Individually, UW-Whitewater senior Kalla Schaefer has won two doubles crowns and one singles title in her career. She could become the third individual in WIAC history to win three No. 1 doubles championships. Schaefer has claimed doubles titles in 2008 and 2009 and secured the No. 1 singles crown in 2008.
Warhawk senior Annie Smith is also a three-time first-place finisher at the league championship, securing No. 3 singles in 2008, No. 2 singles in 2010 and No. 2 doubles in 2009.
Additional returning champions include: UW-Eau Claire junior Taylor Heltne (No. 6 singles - 2009); UW-La Crosse senior Jenny Maruyama (No. 2 doubles - 2010); UW-La Crosse sophomore Abby Tresedder (No. 2 doubles - 2010); UW-Whitewater junior Megan Kasten (No. 3 singles - 2010, No. 3 doubles - 2010); UW-Whitewater senior Sydney Divelbiss (No. 4 singles - 2010); UW-Whitewater sophomore Alexandra Bayliss (No. 5 singles - 2010); and UW-Whitewater junior Lauren Aguilar (No. 6 singles - 2010, No. 3 doubles - 2010).

History of the WIACOn July 1, 1997, the face of intercollegiate athletics in Wisconsin changed dramati-cally. At that time, the nine members of the former Wisconsin State University Conference (WSUC) and the Wisconsin Women’s Intercollegiate Athletic Confer-ence (WWIAC) joined together to form a single conference -- The Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
The WIAC member institutions are: UW-Eau Claire UW-Stevens Point UW-La Crosse UW-StoutUW-Oshkosh UW-SuperiorUW-Platteville UW-WhitewaterUW-River Falls
Each of the nine institutions is a part of the University of Wisconsin System, and each competes at the NCAA Division III level. For 26 years, the WSUC and WWIAC operated as separate men’s and women’s conferences. In 1996, the University of Wisconsin System determined that the two conferences should be merged into a single conference under the direction of one conference office and commissioner.
Gustavus Adolphus College (Minn.), Hamline University (Minn.) and Winona State University (Minn.) became members of the conference in the sport of women’s gymnastics during the 2004-05 academic year. Effective with the 2009-10 academic year, Finlandia University (Mich.) joined the conference in men’s soccer.
The conference office is located in Madison.
Quick Facts about the WIAC
The WIAC competes at the NCAA Division III level.
WIAC student-athletes compete with- out the benefit of athletic aid or schol- arships. They compete for the love of their game.
Over 5,000 student-athletes participate in the WIAC each year.
The nine institutions of the WIAC have a total student enrollment of approximately 70,000.
Over 300,000 WIAC alumni currently reside within the state of Wisconsin.
In the last 10 years, 49 national championship team titles have been crowned by the WIAC.
The WIAC has captured more NCAA national championships than any other Division III conference in history. Championships have been won in 15 different sports, including: baseball, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, men’s cross country, women’s cross country, football, men’s golf, men’s ice hockey, men’s indoor track, women’s indoor track, men’s outdoor track, women’s outdoor track, women’s softball, women’s volleyball and women’s gymnastics (NCGA). It is no wonder the WIAC is commonly referred to as the “Conference of Champions.”
Over 80 percent of all student-athletes competing in the WIAC are products of Wisconsin high schools. The WIAC is truly the “Conference of Wisconsin.”
WIAC student-athletes are students first and athletes second. Each year, dozens of our student-athletes are named to regional and national Academic All-America Teams. Nearly 50 percent of the student- athletes competing in the WIAC achieve a 3.0 grade point average or better.
WIAC Corporate Partner ProgramThe WIAC Corporate Partner Program was the first of its kind for a Division III con-ference. The program is intended to align the WIAC with reputable, high-profile corpora-tions in a partnership based on a principle of “mutual benefit”. The WIAC benefits from receiving revenue dollars that will permit the conference to continue, and in some instances, enhance its many programs and services. In turn, each participating corporation receives the benefit of being associated with the premier Division III conference in the country and the multitude of exposure opportunities such a relationship can provide.
For more information regarding the WIAC Corporate Partner Program, please contact Commissioner Gary Karner at the confer-ence office in Madison.
Each year, the WIAC is selected to host a number of NCAA National Championships. These championships bring nationwide recognition to our institutions, as well as thousands of competitors and spectators to our State each year.
Year in and year out, WIAC institutions rank near the top of the Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup final standings, symbolizing the finest all- around Division III collegiate programs in the country. The 2010-11 final standings found five of the nine WIAC institutions in the Top 32-- UW-Whitewater (6th), UW-Stevens Point (9th), UW-Oshkosh (12th), UW-Eau Claire (14th) and UW-Oshkosh (32nd). These rankings are even more remarkable when considering there are nearly 450 institutions in Division III.
In 2006, the WIAC became the first and only conference in the history of Division III to enter into its own television broadcast agreement resulting in dozens of WIAC regular- season and championship events appearing on Fox Sports North, Fox Sports Wisconsin and Charter OnDemand.

* Teams were awarded points based on their rankings in the regular sea-son conference standings, with nine points going to the first place team, eight to the second place team, etc. Each team also earned points based on its finish at the conference meet. The team with the most points over-all earned the conference title.
** The conference championship is determined by using a combina-tion of the regular season dual meet results and the conference tourna-ment. The finish in the regular season conference standings counts for one-third of the criteria, while the conference tournament counts for the remaining two-thirds.

pionship Scoring
** The 2011 WIAC cham
pion will be determ
ined by using a combination of the regular season dual m
eet results and the conference championship standings. The finish in the regular season dual
meet standings accounts for one-third of the criteria, w
hile the WIAC Cham
pionship results account for the remaining tw
o-thirds. Enter the number of points earned in each flight next w
ith the corresponding total (1st place - 7 pts., 2nd place - 6 pts., etc). Add all nine flights together to get the total cham
pionship points. Then determine the cham
pionship team place and points
multiplied by 2 (1st place - 14 pts., 2nd place - 12 pts., etc.). The top four team
s (in the overall standings) will participate in a team
tournament in the spring to determ
